A new land (ArcE/Closed)

Postby Durmatagno » Sat Dec 03, 2011 11:57 pm

The captain of the three ships stroked his beard as he stared at this jungle laden coast, not much in the way of rock, but it would be a good area to set up a port city were the miners, once they got around to it, would trade what they made with the metal. The two gatling guns on the front of the steam-boat rotated as technicians below deck checked them to make sure they were still working, the dwarves rushed around deck as the daily grind went on, jobs were done, fish were caught, the likes. Cracking his knuckles, the captain called the ships to a halt and had the heads of the other two ships come over to his boat to tell them the plan.

"All right men, you see that small lagoon over there, thats where we'll be setting up shop. The area has plenty of trees to start us off, and there are hills not to far away we can start mining to make better buildings, wooden walls will have to do. First thing we do after getting the walls up the spare gatling guns need to be set up, who knows what primitives there may be lurking in those trees" as the last words left his mouth the other captains nodded and set back out for their ships, setting there boats on a course straight into the bay.

The ships landed and soon began unpacking everything, Dwarves wearing heavy plate armor and wielding heavy battle axes stood at the edge of camp while dwarves started cutting down trees and setting up a wall, lights from campfires danced in the camp as dwarves roasted food, chopped wood, and other jobs, including a few hauling in fish.

West Coast
Taazokaan do Dovah

Xoampas was your average Dragon Man warrior; big, scaly, and always hungry. Red in color, Xoampas like most other Dragon Men was adorned in obsidian and bronze jewelry with blood covering his body as war paint. He didn't usually care for why he was doing what he was told, rather he just wanted to get it over with so he could go home an eat. Xoampas was currently leading a scouting party to go see some sort of 'short white jungle men', at least that's how the hunter had described them. Many of the villagers had called the hunter crazy, but the elders had sent Xoampas and about 20 men out to investigate it just in case.

He didn't see what the big deal was, there were plenty of jungle men in the Eastern Dragonlands ripe for becoming sacrifices, so there was no need to seek out another source. Perhaps these were a different kind of jungle men? The hunter had said they came on ships made of solid metal, although he only had a glimpse so he could be wrong. As much as these things seemed to have worried the village elders, they didn't phase Xoampas one bit. In fact, he could really care less. It wasn't until the colony caim into sight did Xoampas rais an eyebrow.

The 21 men sat squatting otu of sight in the undergrowth at the edge of the clearing where the dwarves had cut down trees. As far as Xoampa could see, it was just a giant wooden wall. When he finally saw one of the dwarves, he gasped. The hunter was right! Xoampa thought he saw wrong when a white, beareded, armor-clad dwarf walked by a group of workers pulling another log onto the wall. It didn't scare him, but rather took him by surprise to see such an ugly beast walking among the Chosen Race such as himself. Xoampa immidiately sent one of the men back to the village to report the findings and motioned the other 19 men to stand up.

They began to approach the wall slowly and cautiously, bows in hand. They had no visible arrows, but they did have iron swords and daggers holstered at their sides. Xoampa was the first to say something at the group of dwarves working on the wall.

"Who are you beasts and why are you trespassing on the Taazokaan!" he yelled.

All of the men pulled back their bows and aimed at the group. As they pulled back, bolts made out of seemingly solid fire appeared ready to be shot.

As the beasts revealed themselves, alarms rang throughout the camp. Dwarves around the camp grabbed there axes and hammers, most only wearing a plate breast-plate, the two placed gatling guns were trained on the beasts, and the dwarven mage-mercenary started muttering chants under her breath. The colonies leader stepped forth, a shield in one hand and his steel axe in the other. His gruff voice slightly muffled inside of the helmet called out "We are dwarves from the Kingdom of Autumns-Dawn, this land is being claimed in the name of President Balrog, leave this land now or we will be forced to open fire". As he finished his sentence the mage finished his spell and four iron defenders crawled out of the earth. A few of the smaller dwarves held throwing axes in both hands and one dwarf held a two-handed massive hammer.

"You have no right to be here!" Xaompas yelled at the leader, "This is the land of the Gods, if you stay here uninvited you'll invoke their wrath."

The other warriors turned their attention to the many dwarves who had taken up arms, each aiming at different dwarves among the crowd. Xaompas lowered his bow and put it on his back. Fire shot from his hands at the ground next to him and two fire golems began to spring out of the ground. At 9 feet tall and made out of lava, the golems would be very menacing. Each one had a fire sword in one hand and a fire whip in the other. They stood next to Xaompas still and silent, waiting for his command to unleash Hell on the dwarves.

"We are here to spread to new lands, we are here to spread our knowledge and we are here to set up a trading city, we came from far to the north, we know nothing of this land or that it even had people living here, as a token of respect, please accept these gifts. Five barrels of our finest ale, three of the finest swords we have, and a musket, along with ammo and gunpowder." As he spoke the men aiming the gatling guns, known to dwarves as Frisky Hoppers, relaxed and brought out the gifts their leader had mentioned, though many of the dwarves on the ground refused to relax. "As another gift we will also send with you some eggs from a owlbear, a beast of burden common under the mountains we live in, they will provide lots of help when it comes to work and are formidable opponents when made angry, on account of their great strength". Five eggs were gingerly placed next to the other gifts by the gatling dwarves.

Two of the men holstered their bows and retieved the gifts. They brough it back behind the other men, who were still pointing their bows at the dwarves. They were to skeptical of the newcomers to lower their guard.

"These gifts don't excuse your intrusion into our land. Offering them to the Gods will only increase their thirst" Xaompas said, "If you have nothing more to say we will be gone."

"We do have one last thing to say, you bear resemblance of the dragons of old, great majestic giants that disappeared from our lands thousands of years ago while the trolls were ransacking our homes, do you know of why this is?" the captain asked as several workers returned to building the wall and a select few were setting stones in place for a forge. The boats out in the water touched down on the shore, bringing in a small hill of fish before shoving back off, only stopping to grab some new ale for the hours ahead.

"It's not our place to question the reasoning of such powerful beings and it should not be yours either," Xaompas said has he and his men backed away with the gifts into the trees, eventually going back to their village. Once at the village, they explained the things they had seen to the village elders who took each word with great fear. They knew these people were advanced beyond their comprehension technologically and so they relayed the information to Quel'kateel, the closest city.

Quel'kateel looked like an iconic Aztec city if they had ever existed in this world. Flat-topped pyramids dotted the city center along a river. Stone huts and bazaars surrounded these massive structures, filled with dragon men selling exotic things like Octiron jewelry, jungle men slaves, Dragon Glass trinkets, and many other things of the nature. Ritual sacrifices usually occured a top the pyramids. Although nothing of the sort was happening, the blood of those sacrificed stained the stone pyramids and the area in front of their very steep stairs.

The city also housed the local king's palace, a masterpiece of stonework filled with a massive throne room, several living rooms, and immense aquariums and bird habitats. As the messenger from the village entered the grand palace, King Meolqueltla was examining his saltwater aquarium. The dragon man came rushing into the room.

"Sir, sir, a local village near the West coast has discovered some sort of short white jungle men. They say they have metal ships and wear metal clothes," the panting man spat out.

"How dare they invade our sacred land. Did they try to make contact with these...beasts?" the king asked questioningly.

"Yes. They refused to leave and gave the men some gifts. Very strong corn-beer called 'ale', giant eggs, swords, and some sort of hollow magic stick that shoots metal balls with powder. Our priests haven't been able to figure out how it works, they say they find no enchantment on it and that it must have something to do with the powder."

"Odd. Ready the sacrifices, I fear these strange men are an oman of bad times and we must plead to the Gods for help."

"Perhaps, my king, the Gods will be more inclined to help if they knew or the great riches these men have."

"Perhaps."

As soon as the dragon-men left the entire camp was rushing around cutting down trees, cutting them, and popping them into place while a few dwarves working in the forge made spikes to attach to the outside of the wall. The third Frisky-Hopper was popped into place on the wall and a gate was lowered into place. The Dwarves were working overtime to get everything set before the Dragon-Men came back, the few Giant Beetles that had survived the trip were put to working knocking down trees to get them out of the way even faster, clearing up more farmland inside of the metal reinforced-wooden walls and cannons were being made to reinforce the Friskies lining the outer wall and a select few dwarves were all ready setting up farm-land.

A huge crowd had gathered around the largest of the pyramids, infact it was almost the entire city. A top the main pyramid, the king and queen sat with their two sons to the side of a stone table. The High Priest of the city was standing behind the table with guards and other nobles along the side of the flat top. The crowd below was cheering madly, but it was nothing compared to how loud they would get when the sacrifices began. The first jungle man was lead onto the platform from a series of wooden scaffolding going around the back of the pyramid. He was layed belly up on the table and the priest began to say a series of prays. Within a few seconds he raised the cerimonial Octiron knife above the jungle man's chest and the crowd went quiet.

The man was whimpering as he looked at the raised dagger, knowing full well what was going to happen. Just as the crowd had fully become quiet the priest brought the knife down into the man's chest and the crowd went completely crazy. He stuck his hand into the wound and pulled out his still beating heart. He raised it for everyone to see and took a bite out of it before placing it into a wooden plate off to the side. He then cut the man's head off and raised it aswell. The priest threw it down the steep stairs before pushing the body down after it. They both landed in a small opening in the crowd at the bottom of the pyramid where many of the dragon men began to rip the body apart and eating it, screaming in a frenzy all the while. This process was repeated several times before the wooden plate was full of 15 hearts. A plate of gold offerings was also assembled next to the hearts while the sacrifices occured.

At last, the crowd went silen again and the priest raised his jewel-encrusted staff. He muttered a few words before shooting a giant beam of fire into the sky, which probably would be just barely visible to anyone looking in the general direction from the dwarf colony. Within minutes the roar of a fire drake was heard throughout the still quiet crowd. The giant beast circled the pyramid a few times before landing on the roof of the temple building on the top of the pyramid. The drake was a sight to behold, at 25 feet long and black in color with various golden jewels pierced all over its body. It shot and arc of fire in the air before looking down at the priest.

"Why have you summoned me, priest?" He said as he swallowed the plate of hearts whole.

"Almighty Althose, God of War and Protection, we request your help in expelling foreign beasts from the land you have so benevolently gifted us with," the high priest said, throwing the last head down the stairs.

"Foreign beasts? Of what sort are they?" Althose asked with a tinge of curiousity in his voice.

"Small pale men with hair coming from their chins. They wear metal clothes and ride in metal boats. A village on the West coast sighted them and requested they leave these lands, but they refused."

"Small pale men? I have seen these creatures before, many years ago. They call themsevles 'dwarves' and are masters of metal. They have no place being on these shores. Do they have valuables with them?"

"The likes of which you have never seen."

"I have seen a lot, priest. Nonetheless, Meolqueltla gather your forces, I must investigate why these Lesser Beings are so far astray from their homelands."

The king sat up after silently watching the sacrifices the whole time.

"You heard him, all warriors gather your weapons, we ready for war!" Meolqueltla yelled and the crowd began to cheer in a frenzy as the men went to arm themselves and the rest went to go back to their everyday business. Nearly 10,000 warriors happily marched under the cover of Althose who circled above.

When they arrived at the fort's clearing, surrounding it invisibly in the underbursh, Althose, still circling high above, yelled out loud enough for the whole fort to hear, "Where is your leader? Speak now and make no sudden movement or you shall all be slain! Why are you on MY shores, catching MY fish and cutting MY trees?"

The captain stepped forth, wearing his plate mail and holding an axe on his back and called out in a deep bellowing voice "MY NAME IS YORIK DIAMONDARM, WE HAVE COME SOUTH, BY REQUEST OF OUR PRESIDENT, TO CLAIM NEW LAND IN THE NAME OF AUTUMNS DAWN, WE SAW A VAST SEEMINGLY UNTAMED WILDERNESS AND THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD AREA FOR US TO START PORT CITY. AS THIS LAND IS OBVIOUSLY INHABITED WE HAVE STARTED STOCKPILING SUPPLIES IN ORDER TO TRADE. DWARVES OF OLD TOLD TALES OF MIGHTY FLYING BEASTS THAT BREATHED FIRE, BUT YOUR KIND HAS LONG SINCE LEFT OUR LAND. OUR KINGDOM IS RICH, AND IS WILLING TO TRADE WITH ANYONE, WE HAVE A GIFT FOR YOU, A FEW OWLBEARS AND BULETTE'S ." A few younger dwarves brought out the owlbears and bulette's, both monsters in their own right that had been tamed for common farm work, pets, and occasionally mounts during times of war . Taking in one last deep breath before calling out once more, "WE ARE ALSO WILLING TO MAKE ARMS AND ARMOR FOR YOUR PEOPLE, THAT AND WE'LL TEACH YOU SOME OF OUR NEWER TECH, BUT FOREWARNING, THE MORE YOU USE IT, THE LESS MAGIC YOU WILL HAVE, AND AS A TOKEN TO YOUR PEOPLE, WE WILL GIVE YOU TWENTY SLAVES, A GROUP OF DWARVES WHO WANTED TO ATTACK YOUR PEOPLE ON SIGHT AND TRIED TO CHASE THEM ONCE THEY LEFT, WHAT SAY YOU"? He said as twenty bound and gag male dwarves with no beards, cut to show their insolence, were pushed out by the creatures at gun point.

Althose dove down, bringing his wings in for speed and shooting them out at the last second to catch himself. He landed right in front of Yorik, taking no care to avoid crushing buildings, supplies, or even dwarves. The drake snorted with furiosity, shooting stale warm air at the dwarf.

"Well now you know these forests very well are inhabited. You may see yourselves as superior to the Dragon Men you met earlier, but just remember you are all mere bugs to me," Althose said with anger clear in his voice.

"I don't know how you go about things in your lands, but here the Lesser Beings pay tribute to the Superior Beings, and dragons would be superior. You said you were stockpiling supplies so you obviously have enough to pay. I will accept you...'gifts' as sacrifices but I do expect gold or some sort of rare dwarven metal aswell."

As Althose spoke with Yorik several dragon men came out of the surrounding trees to being the slave dwarves back into the forest. One was killed right on the spot and was ripped apart for food, in clear site of the colony no-less. While the drake awaited the dwarf's response he shot and arc of fire towards the Owlbears and Bulettes, again taking no care to avoid scorching the escorting dwarves. The result was a platter of seared treats for him to feast on.

Several Dwarves gasped as the man was ripped apart, though none were killed by the dragons landing or breath, though one had been scorched pretty badly. Yorik stared the dragon in the face, "Of course we have gold, though we brought no Dwarven metal with us, we have gold." Waving his hand, a rather large dwarf same out with a wheel-barrow piled to the top with gold and gems, be brought out two more before standing still by the pile. "Thats all we have, and should you be interested, you could make much more, care to here how" at this point he had casted his eyes down, while he wasn't afraid of death, the other dwarves here didn't need to die because he angered a great beast. "One more thing, we gave your people some eggs from a owl-bear, should you like the way they taste we will gladly bring more eggs for your people to raise, though it'll have a price".

Althose pondered for a fre seconds before yeplying, "Since you no doubt have mroe gold in your home tribe, I will expect more from your tributes than a simple wheelbarrow full. And should I develop a taste for those...owlbear eggs, I expect them to be in your tribute along with my gold. I don't know who you think you're talking to, but I will most certainly not pay a price for what I want."

As the dwarf brought out the wheelbarrow of gold several dragon men warriors emerged from the forest again and picked it up. A small squabble broke out among the men and Althose let out a menacing rawr in their direction, sending them scurrying silently back into the undergrowth with the gold.

"Well, we have two conditions should you want a new source of gold, our first is that this colony were building and an area around it be given to use, this has an upside for you in the fact that it makes collection of our tribute easier and allows us to give you more at once, and the other condition is more of a trade, we bring even more gold, and even some dwarven metal, to take the dragon glass that is no doubt piling up in your cities and homes, should the first not be met you'll see us maybe twice a year with very little gold, if it is met we can give you more gold and even make something from your locals, should the first be met and not the second you lose nothing and gain nothing more, should both be met you'll gain much, should neither, well you'll see us maybe twice every ten years. The Owl-Bears breed quickly for something so long lived, so if you let those eggs grow, those eight, should it be half-n-half, will produce around 500 eggs a year, and soon you'll get a lot in". The dwarf had at this point removed his helmet and was now studying the way the dragons scales fit together.

"I don't see how expanding you colony a few miles will make it any easier for me to land in your city and carry a mound of gold to my Aviapolis, but if will facilitate your aquisition of it, I will allow you to expand your colony. As for your trade proposition, I'd gladly make more of this worthless by-product you call 'dragon glass'. I don't see how it would profit you, but I also don't care," Althose said.

He then turned and shot a quick arc of fire at the ground next to him, creating a scorchmark of dragon glass on the ground.

"It'll make it easier because we'll be bringing in to much for one trip, so we'll settle a larger amount of dwarves in the area and ship the gold to a Dragon-Man city where you can grab it with their offerings. That is indeed dragon-glass, we know some people that will pay quite a bit for just a small amount, of course you'll be receiving most of the profits, both as the supplier and for being one of the greatest creatures this planet has ever known, you will receive more than a fair share. If you have nothing else to add, I think we're done here, more gold will be here by the end of the week and soon this colony will be pumping out gold as well, you'll get plenty of money, and our leader back home will be happy." The dwarf said with a bow, the other dwarves in the colony following suit.

"Just remember, if any of your people stray out of this area, I shall not be responsible for their fate. I also hold the right to kick you out of my lands anytime I feel, with force if necessary. If any of your dwarves manipulate the land outside of the area I grant you, they will be dealt with accordingly and your tribute will increase." Althose finished.

"If you agree to that, we have a deal."

Actually, I believe there are actually proven health benefits to drinking ones own pish. So your statement is, strangely, accurate.

Twirling his fingers through his beard for a minute before replying to the mighty beast before him "If they meddle outside of their territory they will be doing so against my orders, they will have broken the law and should you not kill them, they'll become work-slaves till their death. Should a dwarf be got doing anything outside the land you have granted us, they have broken the law and no longer have freedom, you may do what you will with them. One final thing, there are other dwarves that won't like us being here, they might try and ruin our deal, should they land here, we will try and get them out unless they wish to talk, usually there more violent then we. If you have no problems, than yes it is a deal".

"All righty then that should cover anything, more gold will be here by the end of the month, and we'll stay true to our deal". The Yorik said with a final bow, not straightening till after the dragon left.

At that, Althose picked up the gold from the dragon men in the forest and flew back to the city to pick up the gold tribute there, eventually flying back to his aviapolis in Southern Taazokaan. As for the army in the surrounding trees, many of them started the trek back to Quel'kateel, although some emerged from the forest and began to yell at the fort.

"Why have you come to my lands," King Meolqueltla yelled, "and attempted to barter the Gods' Rock from us for simple gold? As much as I believe in the Gods, I question why they would allow beasts such as yourself to inhabit these lands that were given to use centuries ago by the same very Gods!"

Those who had stayed behind with their king cheered him on, clearly mad that Althose had began trading dragon glass, seen as holy relics, for gold which was so abundant in the Dragon Lands the dragon men saw no reason to give it any real value.

"We told Althose why we came here, and we didn't attempt to barter, we suceded in doing so, according to him this is our land now, so were going to start doing what we will on our land, we'll be using the river to come to your cities to trade weapons for gold. We have informed Althose that we will be leaving our tribute with you, should he receive none from us, we will pay up front but we will not be happy" as he called to the dragon-men as his people got back to work on the fort.

"We'll see who's land it is..." the king retorted as he retreaded back into the forest with what men that had stayed.

They returned to the city to go about their daily lives, soured by Althose's decision to allow the dwarves on their land. There were even whispers among the dragon men of revolt against the dragons. Although nobody actually did anything, the very thought of such an act was something that would have never occured before the dwarves arrived. The city's nobility were worried a little that they would lose control of the situation if a miracle didn't happen, and a miracle was in the works.

With the politics out of the way for the moment work resumed on the colony, every able bodied dwarf was cutting trees, or forging the metal reinforcements, or setting up the farmland, or out fishing, everyone was doing what they could for the colony, the dragon glass the dragon had made was gathered up and locked in a heavy iron chest. The six remaining owl-bear eggs were carefully set to be hatched while the bulettes where set up to carts to head to the hills within there allotted area where dwarves would look for anything valuable and start mining it. A few flamethrowers were set up on the wall along with recently finished Ballista and there bolts, tied to ropes with barbed hooks were loaded in should a hostile dragon fly buy.
