CONSTANTINE NERO DECLARES CANDIDACY, NOMINATED; OTHER CANDIDATES FALL IN LINE
Urceopolis - The stage is set for Urcea's 2055 presidential election. Constantine Nero, 32, the former Imperial Heir, declared his intention to run for President through the Nation Party, which is called "a strong party supporting national unity and patriotism" by its supporters, and "ardent fascists" by its detractors. Nero soon won the nomination of the Nation Party. Many former Imperial nobles and figures of importance have pledged their support to Nero, and it is expected that he will easily win the support of the former Imperial provinces. Nero, if elected, intends to pressure Congress to strengthen the role of Urceopolis in Urcean government, and initiate a more permanent isolationist economic policy.
Opposing Nero from the Conservative Party is current Chancellor Gregory Spano, who took over as Chancellor upon the death of long-time Conservative leader Michael Colombo. Spano is the youngest candidate at 30, just passing the Constitutional restriction on age - he, like Constantine Nero, is one of the members of the "new generation", a generation of Urcean politicians who did not fight in the Great War. Spano supports continuing the Urcean economic policies of President Nero.
The Union Party, an inoffensive centrist party, has nominated former Urcean diplomat Alphonse Laurent, who is in his mid 60s. The party advocates entirely abandoning "national" policy, maintaining that Congress should have even less to do with national affairs. It advocates disbanding the National Army, and forcing provinces to raise militias to defend the nation. Although it has no social policy (they think it should be a Provincial Decision), most Unionists are slightly in favor of liberal policies - that is, they believe provinces should enact baseline government medical insurance and social welfare programs.
Last but not least, the Liberal Party, which nominated Kevin Valentin. The membership of the Liberal Party is quite diverse, as it is a merger of several left-center and leftist groups. They generally agree that Urcea must be moved more to the left in order for the nation's long term success - as such, they support a strong Congress, nationalized healthcare, and a "societal safety net" through a large social welfare program.
