I apologise, I have just occasionally seen a "Mature" label added to certain threads and thought it had some official grounding. No, it seems what I was inquiring about will be within limits.

The "Mature" tag does not protect you from punitive action if the content of the post contains rule violating material; it has, however, become a tradition to utilize the tag in threads which tackle themes or motifs which, while within the boundaries of the PG-13 Rule, still might be upsetting or unsettling to an uninformed reader. This is more of a community convention involving literary themes and aesthetics, and not a Staff-derived edict; at the end of the day, if it is violating the PG-13 Rule, you are likely to still get slapped for it - with or without the "Mature" tag (which, again, has no basis in rules, as far as I am aware, outside of a simple community convention).

Ultimately, whether you use it or not is up to you; the PG-13 Rule is effectively sacrosanct, but themes - such as genocide, implied intimacy, etc. - can still be utilized in writing without violating the PG-13 Rule, which is where the "Mature" tag often finds its use: to inform the reader such themes might be included, even though they conform to the PG-13 Rule. For further information, I would suggest going here:

    Offensive Material: As mentioned previously, we use the US movie rating "PG-13" standard. Mild swearing may be tolerated, mild sexuality may be hinted, but explicit or excessive versions of either or both will result in moderation intervention.
For the record, I am not a Staff member and thus I do not seek to construe this as making a declarative statement in regards to policy; this is merely my attempt to elucidate the origin and utilization of the "Mature" tag. As Bears Armed stated, if you feel it might be in violation of the PG-13 Rule, I would suggest not posting it; you cannot be warned for something which you did not post.

Thank you, however now that that has been clarified I am pretty sure it is well within PG-13.

It depends on the RP. If your RP is military minded or involves some sort of (pardon my pun) international incident, then this is the forum. Of course, NS Sports is for any sports related RPs, and Nationstates will relate to anything else. (such as meetings, weddings, etc.)

Unless it's of a serial nature, you won't really risk a ban with accidentally putting up mature content - it happens to everyone now and then. Generally the site requires a broad PG-13 system of which the definition changes a bit, but is a relatively minor 'offence'. No porn, no smut, no crazy gore (and no visual gore at all). The standard stuff you can find in the One Stop Rules Shop.

The Mature tag is generally a warning from the writer, sort of like a soft social contract. It means that integral to the RP will be themes that are mature in nature (Kyrusia aptly mentioned genocide), or may depict some level of grisliness. It doesn't protect you from any disciplinary action, but on the flip side it does condition your readers to expect a different thematic level.

For instance, most of the things you come across from say, The Kraven Corporation may be considered mature. A warning will give a reader a good idea that they should expect such a thing. If you abuse it, though, or try to hide behind it if your writing becomes noticeably problematic, it doesn't protect you. It's just a courtesy, but it's one that many RPers practice.

If you're worried or curious, feel free to contact a Mentor or myself about the content of a post. They can point you in a hassle-free direction.

This weeking I'm going to be starting a short little RP with Neu Engollon regarding the usage of several aircraft I purchased from his storefront and the subsequent marketing partnership between his company and the unit of my military that purchased the aircraft. I was wondering, should post the RP in II or NS?

If anyone's curious, heres the storefront interaction thats getting this thing going

Maybe this distinction between II and NS is too old school, but I've always seen NS as the place to go for story- and character-driven RP. It's the type of writing you'd see if you read a fiction novel. The writing on II tends to be a tad bit drier in that it also focuses on other aspects and has a different narrative angle, in a tone more proper of a history book or something like that. I post on II because of that aforementioned region and because most of the players in my region post on II, so where your RP circle is definitely matters too.

To concur with Mac, the distinction has largely eroded over time. Anymore - as there are quite evidently plenty of character-driven roleplays on II - it's more based around the relative sub-cultures in II and NS, as they are most certainly distinct things, and where one's most common fellow roleplayers prefer to interact. Ultimately it is a matter of where you feel the thread would get the most amount of activity and "press", so to speak; that and, to a degree, II often has simply more of a slant toward the potentiality of conflict, where in NS (from my admittedly limited activity there) there is a lack of such a slanted potentiality - regardless of whether it might be considered an "international incident" or cause for "foreign intervention or interest".

If you want a gauge to go by, that is it: "Is it reasonable to assume this thread - regardless of if it's closed, open, application-based, or invite-only - liable to result in international interest?" If the answer is "yes", then II is more suitable than NS.

I'm a big fan of Dropbox, but it doesn't play well with embedded pictures. Depends if you want to be able to link to pictures or embed them really.

Somewhat on-topic reply;

You can get a unix hosting account for very, very cheap from a variety of different hosts. What's the advantage over imgur/etc?

You can do what you want with it. Make a folder for images, spreadsheets, link anything for as long as you want, put up a little web page for some project or another. Host DoGa files for whatever reason you can imagine. Yes, it's about five bucks or so a month. Possibly cheaper (I go through my old work, so if I ever have a problem...) but for the flexibility you get? Plus you can just access the files as if they were on your local system assuming you've got anything like a modern operating system. No web interface, no passwords.

If you're RPing in II, you can just post the OOC as a separate thread in II.

To answer the question in a bit more detail;

Generally I would only post an OOC thread if there is a likelihood that there will be OOC issues to resolve and planning to do. Any kind of military conflict has the distinct possibility of this and it is the most frequent culprit. For something like a fashion show, diplomatic tete-a-tete, romantic evening, or similar mostly character based interaction an OOC thread would be less likely to be needed and might even be a hindrance to good RP.

The "Think Tank" thread is a means of putting your ideas out there in order to get constructive feedback to them. It is not meant for advertising your roleplays.

'fraid not. There aren't any threads in II exclusively for RP advertisement; the think-tank is more of a place to kick around ideas, get feedback, find prospective writing partners, that jazz. If you want to get your hands on some RPers, send out TGs to people you would like to join, or slap a link in your sig. Those are two tried and true methods of garnering traffic, with the former obviously being more directed and effective.
