''The Long War''

Planet of Genyx, Nytos System, Nytos Cluster, Delta Quadrant
City of Landuin, Dominion Head Quarters

Nytos was slowly breaking the horizon, her light beginning to illuminate the landscape to unveil the rocky regional hills around the city. Large shadows grew across the peaks, devouring the grass, plants, and buildings - forming grotesque and twisted shapes as they did. The sky itself was a rich montage of reds, purples and blues in the morning light - though the light within the capital of the Dominion remained a deepened, almost sepulchral blue.

As Nytos continued to rise in claim of her kingdom, the moon Gemuin glimmered brightly in the sky. Its fractured body and chunks trailed behind it, a reminder to the Gemuin Cataclysm millions of years ago. Arduin, the larger moon was setting in the west - her purple body gently rolling away beneath the tuck of the hills, only to vanish into a thin line of bluish sky that crept ever further along the horizon.

Before long, Nytos was almost directly above now, the city had started to churn - the rumbling of vehicles, the vanishing of street-lights, and the whirring of engines as craft flew about. Within the opalescent city, rested a tall structure that stretched for several blocks. Banners bearing the Dominions military insignia fluttered in a gentle cold breeze as guards stood before the large, towering doors of crystal and rock.

''Commander - a transmission just arrived from Admiral Ra'Thun'' the Gennite said, she stood at attention for a moment, waiting for her superior to acknowledge her. The Commander was leaning back in the chair, idly staring at a selection of notes as they flicked the screen, scanning.

''Ra'Thun? Let me... see'' the commander said, turning in the chair to face the subordinate. ''At ease'' they followed, the chair squeaking as they stood up to take the small bluish device from them.

''Well, this is definitely interesting, what's your name?'' the commander asked, taking a moment to look her over.

''Rathena, Sir'' she answered, "Commander Tinaan - if I may ask, what's the message?'' she followed, a general curious look to her eyes as her hair gently brushed across them, freely moving in a wave over her skin.

''I don't see the harm - Come with me, we need to head to the Board'' Tinaan said, reaching over and quickly grabbing their jacket as they rounded the desk - flipping things off with their antennae as they did. "Come along now, this information is important, and I'd prefer to not keep things waiting'' she added.

Rathena was a bit disappointed that she didn't get told right away, though - a subtle excitement was present in her eyes and posture as she twisted around to follow the commander. Not many, if any at all were ever allowed to meet the Board, so either the information wasn't anything in need of being confidential - or she was coming for some other purpose entirely. She speculated on it for a few moments as they passed through the forum, the guards on each side of the room standing to attention in almost perfect unison.

"I can say the Board will be quite pleased with this information, Revin!'' Tinaan yelled, looking around for a moment at the doors on either side of the room as she stopped in the middle of the large carpet waiting. "Revin!'' she yelled again, there was some quick shuffling behind the door on the right before Revin emerged behind it.

''Revin, get an escort ready - we need to meet the Board immediately'' - ''Yes Commander!'', and just like that the rather quirky looking, well what quirky looking would be to a Gennite anyway - being vanished just as fast as they had emerged.

"Now listen, Rathena was it? When we meet the board, I expect your best discipline unless you want to be scrap metal'' Tinaan said, looking to Rathena with a slight glare - their voice was a bit more thick with the glassy harmonic that Gennites held when speaking audibly. Rathena shook her head in understanding, albeit rather nervously.

''Good'' Tinaan said, lifting their gaze to search the door for the re-emergence of Revin who would hopefully be back in a timely fashion. Revin was in someways an annoyance to Tinaan, Tinaan took a moment to look at her watch and sighed. "Either she's gotten stuck in the rubbish bin again, or that escort is taking painfully slow and I'm going to rust to death'' she said cynically.

Finally however, Revin did emerge, saluting Tinaan and in a higher than necessary voice announcing, ''Escort is ready Commander!''. Which drew nothing more than a glare from Tinaan, their eyes peering at Revin like daggers whom had yet to taste their share of blood.

''That's all for now Revin, C'mon Rathena'' she said, "Revin - try to not burn the place down while I'm gone''

As Tinaan and Rathena started moving again, they covered the remaining distance of the carpet, the doors opening for them and flashing them with the brightness of Nytos in the sky. As their eyes adjusted, a craft was sitting out front with some armed guards near the door - one leaned over and opened it as Tinaan waved a hand to signal Rathena to get in. As she did, Tinaan took one last moment to gaze at the street before sliding in themselves.

The door shut, and the engines hummed to life, flames licked at the paved thoroughway before the craft jerked upwards at first - before doing so more gently. Rathena rested her chin on the palm of her hand and gazed out through the thickened window at the buildings as they rose. There was a moment of silence, a jerk, and then the craft was on its way to the Board. "Who is the Board?'' Rathena asked, realising the question had never come to mind before.

"The Board is composed of the lower council of administrators who deal with military operations'' Tinaan replied, leaning back in their seat as they rested their head on the synthetic seat-cover. Tinaan had been a director of the military Headquarters of the Dominion for almost 200 years, she'd seen it all - detailed in the reports were the lives of many Gennites in the Long War. Many lives, that had - or were, no longer with them, killed in battles across the Galaxy.

In many ways, even though she had never seen combat herself - there was a definite feeling of loss reading the statistics. Of course, to the Oracle or the Oligarchs - they were numbers well spent, but there was a strange attachment felt with Tinaan and the reports of these numbers. They may have been machines, sentient machines - but they had memories and experiences. She saw the war for what it was, detailed in the lines of those reports, of the lives cut short, of the uncertainty of the war - and the news she carried now, would forever impact the Dominion.

Rathena watched Tinaan for a few moments, before returning to her window-gazing, the craft twisted and turned as it navigated the streets of the stone-jungle. Traffic up in the air was less hectic than on the ground, the streets below were reserved for walking thanks to these vehicles. Considering the population of the Gennites on Gynex, the streets were usually packed.

As the vehicle arrived at a landing pad on-top of a building, a sign straddled the stone with, 'Ya Ve'thim Hisander Ula Namin', 'Central Department of Military Bureaucratic Affairs' in large lettering. They exited the vehicle, feeling the wave of heat and wind as it left the pad behind them. "I am Marshal Tinaan, I have important information for the Board'' Tinaan said to the guards at the door, displaying her chipped hand as they nodded.

One moved to open the door, saluting as the two entered and were greeted with a long hallway. They followed it until coming across a lift, where they would enter and press the button to the relevant floor. As it moved Tinaan took a moment to look Rathena over, she was wearing the usual military fatigues - a pale grey jacket and cargos, a small firearm could be seen inauspiciously poking its way out of the rim of the jacket.

As the lift came to a stop, and the doors opened - the room before them was large and laid with ornate decorations, symbolism of a very wealthy section of the government. It made since of course in reality, the Board was the higher echelon of the Stratocracy, and lavished themselves in their luxury and prestige that came with the positions. The tick-tack of their boots echoed through out the vaulted halls of the room, amplifying the sound to that of a gunshot or firecracker. A large door blazened the centre of the end of the room, knocking on it, Tinaan stepped back as it opened.

"Marshal Tinaan!'' a voice greeted, hiding somewhere among the stacks of papers, maps, and odd devices that littered the tables and shelves of the room. A darkened figure soon emerged from behind one of the towers of papers, darker than the usual Gennites - with radiant tealish hair. Glasses for some, odd - though undoubtedly for an aesthetic, reason.

''Director Yura'' Tinaan returned, giving a salute before continuing, "I have some information from Admiral Ra'Thun that the Board may have some interest in" she said, holding up the small device in her hand.

Yura waved their hand, "Come, come! Right this way, we were enjoying some of this delightful...uh... uhm... tea? Something - bah! it doesn't matter! the Board's in here'' Yura said, rushing to another small doorway in the rear of the room. Though, more of a shuffle really. Tinaan and Rathena followed in pursuit of the Kullene born Gennite. Inside this other room sat a series of chairs, nonchalantly cresting around that of a table.

Among the chairs' occupants were several members of the Board assuming, wearing ridiculous amounts of jewellery, thick silk clothing, and opulent colours of ornate modifications to their bodies. Tinaan thought them to look like fat, lavish peacocks who hadn't seen a sun in a millenia, much less a treadmill - if it'd do them any good at all to begin with.

''Ah, Tinaan! So nice to see you! Yura says you have something?'' a voice of one of these peacocks stated, setting down their crystal china to give a wave and offer a seat. One that Tinaan denied and stood instead, "How did you... oh yeah... uplink'' she sighed, "Information from Admiral Ra'Thun'' she said, handing the device over to Yura, arguably the fattest of the peacocks.

Yura took it, letting one of their antennae extend to plug into the device and read its content. ''Oh my!'' she exclaimed in this irritating, almost piggish sound as if someone had presented her with an butter-iced truffle. "It would seem that Admiral Ra'Thun has captured the Betrican System! The Betrican Federation is no more!'' she exclaimed, taking nearly everyone but Tinaan by surprise as a simultaneous gasp could've swallowed the stones around their necks.

Rathena's eyes lit up, glowing a very deep yellow as her hair became excited, moving about more wildly now - "Does this mean the war is over?'' she asked. Tinaan shut her eyes, almost wishing Rathena hadn't opened her... well... hadn't spoken.

The lardy peacocks looked to her, Yura wrinkling her face for a moment as if in thought. "Tinaan, a moment in privacy please'' she said. Tinaan was now regretting this, but nodded, "Of course - Rathena, leave us - wait outside''

Rathena nodded, "Understood Commander'' she said, saluting and then vacating the room as the door shut.

"Tinaan - with this news, the war is now over, a thousand years of conflict and 11 systems later, and we now have straddled a small civilization with a finger in the Alpha Quadrant as well'' she said, stopping to drink her cup. Tinaan slightly shook their head, idiots - damned, fat bastards she thought.

"This war has been extremely profitable as you see - especially for the Kinallos Shipyard, and the support in this conflict has been at an all time high. As such, word of Ra'Thun's victory over the Betrican Armada will be a major accomplishment for our civilization, and a major celebration for our people.''

Tinaan raised a brow, "I agree... I guess this means we can recall some of our outposts now''

''No.''

''No?''

Tinaan was confused now, staring at Yura for a moment, "No - this war is far from over, we may have captured the Betrican systems, and their capital but there is bound to be Betrican vessels still out there''

Tinaan didn't understand, "But Yura, with the fall of the Betrican capital - the war's over, there are no more Betrican vessels''

"Yes, there are'' she said, staring at Tinaan intently, "There are still Betrican vessels - vessels that have refused to surrender, and have resorted to piracy. Do you understand?''

"I...'' Tinaan said, realizing now what Yura meant - her circuits were now lit with static as she felt angry. Outside, her composure remained reserved now - "I understand, I'll notify the outpost immediately''

"Good - we'll notify the Oligarchs of Ra'thun's victory, I imagine there'll be a big celebration across the Dominion, but the war must continue - Dismissed'' Yura said, waving Tinaan off. Tinaan saluted, about-faced and then headed out. As she came through the door, she was greeted by a curious Rathena, "What happened, is the war really over?'' she asked.

Tinaan took a moment to look at her, "No...''

"No? I don't understand, what happened?'' Rathena piped up again, repeating the question as they began to walk.

"Politics, damned politics happened'' Tinaan said with a grimaced expression.

''Bridges''

Above the moon of Saluin, Ol'Fenwa System, Nytos Cluster, Delta Quadrant

''Hand me the wrench please'' the mechanic said, holding out her hand as she waited for the tool. Once she had it, she'd begin tightening the bolt, welding a piece of the pipe with her torch. The sparks flying all over the small, cramped compartment.

"Six more days out here, and we can return to Hy'' a face in the dark said, shuffling was heard as the other mechanic came into the light that was haphazardly hanging above them on a small hook.

The one had stopped welding for a moment to look at her companion, "In a hurry to get somewhere Yemir?'' she asked. Yemir shrugged, letting herself fall against the wall as the sound of the metal popping echoed throughout the structure's narrow walkways.

"Not in particular no - I'd be lying if I didn't think having this job way out here, especially so close to the Fenwar worlds, wasn't hazardous.'' Yemir said, resting her head agains the cold metal as she idly watched the other. "Aren't you concerned Thyla?'' she asked.

Thyla shrugged, setting the torch down as she too slid against the wall of the narrow corridor. "Not really, the Fenwar system hasn't had a Betrican sighting in what? A hundred years?'' she said, taking a moment to roll the sleeves of her thermal coat up some as she sat the wrench down as well, staring at the mess of wires inside the small open panel in front of her. "Besides, Rennard's fleet is out here, and I doubt anything close to a Betrican ship would come this far out again - Ra'Thun has chased them all the way back into the Alpha Quadrant'' she reasoned.

"You worry too much Yemir, no logical basis for that either'' Thyla jabbed, grabbing the panel and putting it over the space, she quickly bolted it back in before finally standing to her feet. She took ahold of the light sliding it off the hook to shine it at Yemir, "Come on - this section is done'' she said, urging her companion to move with the light.

Yemir nodded, sliding her way up as well and quickly grabbing her tool box. "How many workers did they say they had so far? Y'know... umm.. Ursal? Yeah - Ursal'' she asked, trying to remember the name of her boss as she moved before Thyla. The two of them navigated the cramped space, taking their time to make the tight turns, some having to turn sidewise to fit through.

"Two - three hundred thousand I believe'' Thyla said, getting her coat caught on a pipe, "Damn...'' she mumbled, giving it a few good yanks before it tore a small hole into the clothing. "Keep going, just got stuck'' she said. "But yeah, three hundred thousand I think it was''

Yemir nodded, "So if they're building this one, they have one in Arkalos, Nytos, and Fex... they going to put one in Betrica too?'' she asked as they approached a small manhole, she ducked to move in through it before pressing on.

Thyla was right behind her, "They already have Betrica's built already - the Oligarchs were worried about trying to build one in the system, so they've prefabricated it into pieces.'' she said.

Yemir nodded again as they came to a door, "Here, hold this'' she said, handing the toolbox to Thyla as she grabbed the large lever on the door and gave it a pull. It creaked, and at first didn't want to move - another try and it started to move, screaming as the metal scraped against the door. A loud 'clunk' was heard, the door's mechanism unlocking as Yemir pushed it open.

Thyla handed over the toolbox as they stepped through the door, a bright light was shining on the structure and causeway they had found themselves on - illuminating the darkened metal until it was nearly white. The two mechanics took a moment for their sensors to re-adjust before moving, to the right of them was nothing - space. All around them were workers, people buzzing around on jetpacks, and ships slowly moving beside the structure. Thyla stopped a moment to look up at what they had been working on for the past few years.

Their causeway stretched across the full length of it, hundreds of metres across, it looked like a massive hexagon - towering above them in immensity, illuminated by spotlights. Intricate pipes, scaffolding, and giant cables covered the structures - some workers were seen having some fun as one stepped off of their platform, escaping the field of the gravity being produced for the structure. They did a few cart-wheels, rolling about before using their jetpack to come back to the platform.

"It's amazing'' Thyla commented, causing Yemir to stop - though out here, they were communicating with the nodes inside of their heads, there was no atmosphere so audible communication was useless. Yemir looked up, her eyes smiling for a moment to remark at what they had been working on - "A Jump-gate'' she said, "Apparently, the Oligarchs plan on building these across the Nytos cluster, and into the Alpha Quadrant to bridge the two quadrants - it'll bring trade ships closer to us they hope, and with our ports, maybe expand trade.'' she remarked.

"You'd be able to come through here, on a freighter and use the gate to jump from Delta to Alpha'' Yemir said, "Six more days, and this one will be open - come on Thyla'' she said, the two of them heading along the causeway again to their next assignment.
