The M23 Rhyhorn is the Esalonian army's chief armored combat vehicle, or the infantry combat vehicle.

Following the rise of NS counterparts of the Stryker, the most well-known in Esalonia the M9 Partisan of Halcyon Arms, it became clear that Esalonian armored capability fell very short. These vehicles made the balance on armor and versatility, and the chief fighting vehicle before that, the M21, only fulfilled the combat role with only a 25-mm autocannon and a machine gun, and space for only 4 troops. Furthermore, the increased use of rocket-propelled explosives in modern warfare, like the Soviet-era RPG series or more notably the Lyran Ru'ahk, the M21 became obsolete, due to the lack of hard-kill active protection measures like the Trophy APS, or reactive armor tiles, and furthermore its thin armor only provided it protection against .50 BMG.

This prompted the Future Infantry Combat Mobility Project, and the goal of the project was to make a successor to the M21, but not entirely putting it out of service, however; there were proposals to relegate the M21 into a patrol vehicle, or a SWAT vehicle. This spawned the M23 Rhyhorn, and is now in regular service-7,000 are in service with the Esalonian army.

The Rhyhorn is a modular platform, with the exception of the Ambulance variant, and components for the IFV can be swapped for the ICV components in a few minutes provided the components are on-hand. This is not advisable in the middle of a battle, of course, but is always executed in a base or within a few to 20 km of one.

Its armor is the Junior Onix Z system, which utilizes Exote and SiC encased in two metals, again in the Prodas armor scheme.

Exote-Armour is manufactured by Exote Ltd., a Finnish corporation specialized in R&D and production of customized advanced materials for military and industrial clients. Exote-Armour is a new metal-ceramic composite capable of stopping multiple high-velocity AP rounds, including those equipped with hard metal cores. Exote is effective against any type of AP round, but most competitive against highly penetrative types, such as the M993 / FFV 7.62x51R or 12.7mm / 14.5mm caliber AP rounds.

Exote-Armour is capable of stopping several such AP rounds fired at a small target area. After stopping a shot only the area of impact - marginally larger than the caliber - is damaged, and the remainder of the plate remains protective. Hence, the multi-hit capabilities of Exote-Armour are exceptional in comparison to any other light-weight armour material.
Exote-Armour is harder than any modern AP round's penetrating tungsten carbide core and the armour breaks the round into dust.

Exote-armour spreads the energy of the hit and distributes it over a larger area thus fully neutralizing impact. The damage area is much smaller than that of conventional ceramic armors due to Exote-Armour's unique toughness.

Exote-Armour's damage area is only 20-30% larger than the caliber of the hit and the rest of the plate will still remain protective. Exote-Armour is by this nature a superior multi-hit armour.(http://www.exote-armour.com/).

Interface defeat is a phenomenon in which a penetrator meets a hard-enough ceramic, and instead of going through, the ceramic does not get penetrated, but instead the penetrator gets its tip flattened, particles of the penetrator material flowing laterally along the ceramic. As this happens, the ceramic cracks to the point that it cannot hold out anymore and penetration continues. This happens twice so as to "thoroughly abrade" the penetrator before it hits the composite Resilin sandwich tile.

The Composite Sandwich panels are 20 mm thick, being composed of a hexagonally-honeycombed plate of Ti-6Al-4V sandwiched between 2800 Maraging Steel panels. The honeycombs of the honeycomb plate are filled with ceramic and resins to stop fragments.

The Resilin warps or generally distorts the plates sandwiching it, subjecting the penetrator to transverse and shear forces, further abrading it.

Apologies for posting in an 'EATA-only' thread, but I have been informed that some input wouldn't go astray.

Link for Lyran Arms, in all its many flavours, is in my signature block.

As a heads-up, the design philosophy of Lyran Arms is that it will only be posted if it can be done with the knowledge of technology that we have, today. In that respect, it's not a PMT store, although it does pre-suppose that the NationStates world is vast, with NS-page statistics as generally canon, and that resources and ambient threat levels are proportionally extremely high.
Note that, due to that, some articles will be considered overkill in some circumstances, and that some things there will not be appreciated in some RP circles, due to their scale.
Having said that, a great deal of research and effort is put into the hardware to ensure that, as far as can be analysed without building one of the damn things, they will do their job, and do it well.
Furthermore, if there are any questions, or desired modifications, I'm happy to answer them.
