Tropico: Hola Presidente! (OOC/Open Sign-Up)

Postby Harbertia » Sun Aug 21, 2016 4:52 pm

IC

Note: I've only played Tropico 3, and the following RP, while inspired by that game, is not 100% dedicated to the content of the Tropico series. Creative liberties have been taken. What you should expect from this RP is a plot driven by the actions of our soon to be elected Presidente- where that players actions will reverberate in ways perhaps unintended. You can expect various sub-plots around political factions, and the characters who make up those factions. If you are someone who'd leave the RP after loosing the election, then know that you'll be missing out on quite a bit.

TROPICO: HOLA PRESIDENTE!
=A Politically Charged Character Based RP=

Image

Tropico is an island nation located in the Caribbean off the coast of Mexico. The Mayan ruins found in the nation's lush forests are a testimony of it's native people long ago enslaved by Conquistadors. Tropico's progression to independence from the Spanish crown was the first of many revolutions to have taken place on the island state. For a time, it was the Kingdom of Tropico, until a Booze Baron and fellow conspirators rebelled against the monarch, and established the Republic of Tropico. Tropico is thus known as the 'lost territory' by some US Historians as another revolution saw the new republic toppled. The turbulent times that followed set in motion the nation's current system of Imperial Presidency- combining the principle of representative democracy with monarchist efficiency. Those turbulent times also instilled a proud tradition of violent uprising in order to dispose a dictator who deserves it.

Following the sudden death of the former presidente, an emergency election was held in the year 1950. Winning by 50% of the vote, Giovanni Berneschi, a capitalist with plans to transform this island into a paradise full of resorts, and good living, has been elected Presidente. Can Giovanni Berneschi guide this nation out of it's current impoverished state or will his support wane from 50% to Zilch quicker then one can shout 'Viva La Revolution!' Despite what the polls say most of the government of the former Presidente was Communist, or at least pretended to be so- the USSR will not be pleased with this Capitalist victory. But, perhaps the island can find an ally in the US of A?

Politics
Tropico recognizes three political parties in the year 1950. Candidates may run with backing from one of these three, or as an independent. Each party has it's own Party election to determine who will represent them in the Presidential Election. As with any election anyone may vote on the party's presidential candidate- even none party members.

Capitalists
The Capitalist party of Tropico is pro-US, pro-Democaracy, and all for the expansion of upper class attractions. It's current platform is improving US relations, and the island's industry. It's main push this year is privatization- as all agriculture and industry on the island is currently owned by the government.

Communists
The Communist Party of Tropico is a USSR supported political movement whose current platform pushes for better housing, healthcare, and the establishment of Social Security-which Tropico currently lacks. They have a slight upper hand as this was the party from which our former president was elected into office.

Fascists
The Fascist Party of Tropico has surprisingly survived the 1940s and is thus able to run in this year's election. The party is highly nationalistic, and will see to it that 'Tropico First' is the nation's motto. They wish to avoid alliance with either superpower, and to guarantee Tropico's continued independence by way of militarization, and the invigoration of nationalism via indoctrination, and victory in the coming Pan-Caribbean Games.

Education: Educated at a Catholic Highschool before obtaining a General Education at Tropioc U.
Political Affiliation: N/A

Will you be running in this year's elections? Dropped out of race to endorse Giovanni Berneschi as 'a family man who can lead Tropico to prosperity'.
If so, what are your campaign promises? The following is a segment of his speech before dropping out of the Presidential Race; "... If elected I promise to get this nation's economy back on track. We can only blame our former president, a demigogue who has lied to the faces of Tropico- our nation's healthcare, and housing are sure signs of his dishonesty- the communist brought him to power, and for what? Has this nation's healthcare improved? Our people still live in shacks and with god as a witness, shall I be elected in their place shall be apartments. Our children will again attend schools with a good home to return to. God bless this nation, God bless you all!" - Better housing, Reviving the economy through Cash Crops rather then Industry
Additional Information (Optional)
James Hevara is employed as a Professor at Tropico University, and has been seen with nationalist, intellectual, and religious leaders. He's failed to make official association with either of the three political parties this year. He has however been vocal in his admiration for agriculture.

Additional Information (Optional)

Cordaro is welcomed to the Presidential Race. I have made note of him on the OP post. I'm interested in knowing a bit more of his history, for example, was he an American who immigrated into Tropico? If so then it'll establish that at present Tropican law permits any citizen, regardless of national origin, to run in the Presidential election. A contrast to the United States which has established that only American born citizens may be president of the United States. I'll have to note this if such is the case so other players are aware that Tropican citizens who where not Born Tropican can still run for President.

Character's Name: Giovanni Berneschi
Appearance: Standing at 5'9, Berneschi is a well-rounded man with a relaxed gait. His dark silver hair and beard are becoming speckled with pure white, and his ruddy complexion hides his age only little. With a beak-like nose and a quick smile that contrast with his tired blue eyes. He is always seen wearing a beige or white cowboy hat, usually complemented with some sort of suite.
Sex: Male
Age: 54
Occupation: Entrepreneur, CEO and President of Berneschi Inc.
Education: General education in Tropico. Tertiary education in both Tropico (Tropico U.) and the US
Political Affiliation: Capitalist, Mild-Liberal
Obvious Positive Traits: Business Minded, International Connections
Obvious Flaws: Big Spender, Easily Stressed,
Will you be running in this year's elections? Yes (for now*)
If so, what are your campaign promises? Privatization of business and agriculture, Restore US relations and block Soviet Influence, mild social reform, restoration of the military.
Additional Information (Optional) Born to Italian immigrants to Tropico, where he lived till 27 before moving to the United State to persue business opportunities. There Berneschi ran various small time businesses before attending university in America. Afterwords, he started his company and began working on a new and risky venture into hospitality. Specifically, he opened a chain of hotels that became wildly successful, especially with the pre and post-war surge in travel. After losing his two eldest sons in the second world war, he moved back to Tropico with his daughter to pursue opportunities there, while his youngest child and only living son stayed in the states.

Now he hopes to expand his travel industry to Tropico and Italy, as well as influence change in his native island any way he can. For now, the best way to do that seems to be taking a turn to politics.

---

Too good for me not to app. I'm going to go ahead and throw my hat in the presidential race, but dependent on how my real life goes I may have to drop out or resign. I plan on sticking around regardless if I can, though.

Additional Information (Optional): Isabella Rubio was born to a poor family in Tropico, on November 6th 1908. Her parents; the mother a Farmer, and the father a Lumberjack. From an early age, Rubio greatly admired the Tropico Communist Party, believing that they were the only political Party who actually worked to help the less fortunate, and not the rich. She gratuated from College with a Degree in Communications. In 1927, Rubio met the man who would soon become the late El Presidente, and they became friends shortly after. This close tie to the leader of Tropico allowed her to become a Bureaucrat in 1944. During her tenure, she had successfully carried out pro-USSR foreign policies, bringing Tropico's relations with them from negative to neutral (wow, so amazing). Now, with the death of El Presidente, Isabella Rubio is seeking to become the leader of the ruling Communist Party, and succeed Presidente as ruler of Tropico!

If so, what are your campaign promises? The people are sick of tired of poverty. Inadequate housing is a result of the state of our economy. If the people were able to pay for homes and a future prosperity of their children they would not be so unhappy! On top of this, the National Treasury is in the negative. Political Affiliation: Secretly Capitalist
Obvious Positive Traits: Street-wise, Flexible morals and ideals, Good business acumen, Good ties with Organized Crime, has a racketeering empire, has certain influential people in his pocket through blackmail
Obvious Flaws: His corruption is pretty much public knowledge, constantly seeks to rise above his station, man with few principles, aggressive and violent, seen as a thug, doesn't fit in with aristocratic and intellectual elites

If so, what are your campaign promises?
Additional Information (Optional)

Diego Gaviria Delgado came from nothing... and he keeps reminding everyone around him of the fact. Born to a poor family, he started from the bottom rungs of the then-fledgling Tropican Police Force. He rose to his position by being the most cunning, the most violent and the most useful to his superiors. He did this not out of fanaticism, not because he believed in the communist ideals of that regime, but because he wanted to get ahead. He's a man with no morals, no allegiances, no loyalty but to himself. He blackmails, intimidates and bribes whoever he needs to in order to gain power, and almost as importantly, money. He built himself a little illicit empire, which more than compensates for the laughable police chief's salary. Everyone knows about it, but no one dares investigate him, afterall, who's going to arrest him? HA! But he is aware of some of his shortcoming however. He knows that as things stand no one would vote for him and that running for office would draw unwanted attention of powerful rivals to his more obscure activities. Besides, he is not popular enough amongst the people or the elites. His only allies are allies of convenience for now. What he wants is to ingratiate himself to a new regime that will foster the economic development of Tropico to suit his needs, if he could rise up a bit higher, ministerial position, or be given the task of founding an Internal Intelligence Service, he would keep himself busy. He wants hotels, casinos, strip clubs, beach parties, all the businesses that would readily pay him his tribute, or make him a silent partner. With the right government Tropico could become the next Vegas, and he wants to be there every step of the way, and who knows, maybe next campaign he could run as a successful prominent and legitimate business owner.

I was thinking that he follows the cliche of "mother migrated to America, had a bastard with an American, returned home, father took on the raising of the child (due to economic difficulty, and/or gangs), putting him through American education. He disliked America due to an idealized depiction of his homeland, which saw him unable to fit in. He then returns home and tries to make a living. Now disgusted with the way in which his country has "fallen" below his expectations, he desires to set things right."

So probably considered a Tropican national? I don't think USA had the dual nationality clauses affirmed yet (whereby all it takes is a single USA citizen to be a parent).

That works. I was wondering since his boxing carrier is in the US. The Communist Party Primary has begun.

   I applaud you for creating one of the most developed characters this RP has. The list of candidates are up, so you'll be able to get an idea of which to vote for. Right now the communist Primary is taking place, next will be the Capitalist Primary, so you have plenty of time to consider which candidate works best with Diego's objectives.

Hold on a second, I just came up with an idea for Rubio!

Edit: There, Rubio is heavily improved now.
