Star Trek: The Shadowdancer [OOC]

Postby Mincaldenteans » Thu Mar 17, 2016 9:11 pm

THE SHADOWDANCER
Image
IC

Welcome to the Shadowdancer!

Now, she's not much to look at first glance, granted, but I beg to differ. She's a modified civilian transport that can support up to 12 people and cargo to get her pretty far in any direction. The catch? We don't always work for the Feds. See, we're a motley crew from various corners of the Alpha & Beta Quadrants. Whatever our motives and stories are, we've all banded together in search of pay, adventure or a place to call home. That's what the Shadowdancer is, a home, and that'll be what she'll be for as long as I command her.

Now, when you work for me its best you follow the only rule I take to heart: Ship is home, crew is family. Cross that line and we're gonna have some unsavory words between you and I. When you join, you accept the differences that makes us a crew, frankly because no one else will, or at least they pretend so. We're from all walks of life; we are the people the Federation can't abide by; we are the misfits, rebels, and the downtrodden that don't fit into their 'utopia'. And they've all but forgotten that its us that pave the way to their piece of the pie; their shiny future. But, we keep trucking on because we can't do any less. We go where the money takes us.

So come aboard and weave your piece of the story here with us.

S M A R T S
So, you've got some kills, huh? Well, see the applicable lists below and the Capt'll see if he can find you a spot. Note: You can choose a Secondary as your Primary if it's easier for you, but no Primary can be a Secondary. If you have a suggestion for more skills (primary and/or secondary) please let me know, I'll be happy to consider it!
Primary Skills
Command - People listen to you
Tactical - You can use the ship's weapons and some
Bargaining - You make a Ferengi think twice
Smuggling - You're good at hiding things
Doctor - This is rare; there's always a need for you
Con-Artistry - You can sell ice to eskimos
Piloting - You can fly a ship with the best of them
Mechanics - You're the Scotty of our generation
Demolitions - You're good with explosive... too good
Cryptography - You're good at breaking codes and snooping in
Charisma - You can charm your way through anything

Secondary
Underworld Contacts - You know some folks, questions best left unasked
Science Contacts - You know a few famous (or infamous) scientists
Political Contacts - You've got friends in high places
Streetwise - You can handle yourself on the street
Thievery - Need it be defined?
Spying - Your'e a shadow
Entertainment - You make pretty good money without leaving bed
Intimidation - You can scare Klingons
Psychic - Yeah, we get it, you're a mind freak
Appraisal - That block of ice? Yeah, you probably sold it for a lot more than it was truly worth
Repair - So we can trust you won't blow up the warp core
Medic - Dammit Jim, I'm a nurse not a neurosurgeon!
Sniping - Yeah, what it says
Close Combat - You hold your own
Ranged Combat - You like guns
Hacking - Remember that message you snooped in on? Yeah do that on all the others.
R A N K S
So here's the thing, we're the kind of crew who can't give two shits what your rank is. Well, except for the Capt and his XO. You do the job, you get your cut. You stick around long enough, do a good job, you might see a bump in your pay scale. Now, unless the Capt says otherwise, everyone starts at level 1. Don't take it unkindly if you do that's just the way things work around here.

Being the capt, he tried to scale it according to skills, but it didn't quite work the way he thought it be, so this is just a reference:

Level 1 [Rookie.]
One Primary Skill, Two Secondary

Level 2 [Still a rookie.]
One Primary Skill, Four Secondary

Level 3 [Growing up some!]
Two Primary Skills, Four Secondary

Level 4 [Not too shabby...]
Three Primary Skills, Four Secondary

Level 5 [You're trusted.]
Three Primary Skills, Five Secondary

Level 6 [Captain's BFF/Co-OP]
Four Primary Skills, Five Secondary

Level 7 [Your boss/OP]
Four Primary Skills, Six Secondary
S H I P
Now this here is the Shadowdancer ('Dancer for short), an Aerie-class civilian transport. It's undergone a few modifications: houses up to 6 people comfortably, and an extra 6 passengers if the need calls for it. It hauls enough cargo to keep the lights on and enough fuel to make it about a quarter-way through Fed space (without re-fuel).

She's also been modified to go as fast as warp 7, but that's consuming on her resources. She's been equipped with 4 Type-VI phaser banks, two forward and two aft, but she's no warship. There's no astrometrics lab, its been converted for more cargo space. There's only one transporter and it is hardly used (power consumption is a bitch); there's no turbolifts, only stairs and some access is restricted from those not part of the crew (well obvi). Here's the deck schematics, check the legend under it for changes.

Lastly, you should know... 'Dancer isn't like most civilian ships. She's got an AI that snarks back at you, insouciant by default, irreverent by choice and one would swear the computer had feelings. You can thank the previous crewmember for this bit of work, but word of advice... don't take it up with the Captain, he takes it rather personally (and God help you if you try meddling with its programming).

Ain't she a beaut?

Legend:
Deck 1: [Aft section] Crew quarters and kitchen/lounge/messhall, escape pods.
Deck 2: [Fore] Bridge, meeting room & armory, Captain & XO quarters [closest to the bridge], escape pods. [Aft section] Sickbay, passenger quarters, small storage area [2 former labs, gutted].
Deck 3: Shuttlebay, storage tanks, secondary cargo areas, engineering, computer core [goes through decks 3 & 4], & warp core [goes through decks 4 & 5].
Deck 4: Main cargo hold, navigational deflector, deflector control.
Deck 5: Landing struts, matter/antimatter storage, waste extraction.

And this 'ere is a half-functioning Klingon shuttlecraft. Capt hasn't been able to get 'er working, but hey if you can fix it, by all means take a crack at it. She's a minimally armed vessel (2 Type-V forward phaser banks) capable of warp 2 (barely), has pretty sturdy shields though, but no cloak - we ain't that rich. Careful with her, yeah? The damn thing barely fits the shuttlebay:

S T O R Y
So I bet you're wondering what is it we're gonna do and what time period we're in. The year's 2373, and space never felt more dangerous as it has now. Its almost as if you can feel the tension in the air, err, space rather. The Federation has become more militaristic and paranoid; the Klingons are on a war path for lost glory; the Cardassians are desperate defending what little they have from the Maquis; and the Romulans have been awfully quiet (not that they weren't already). And that's just the big folks, who knows what else is going on in the minds of the "lesser" neighbors. There are murmurs of a full scale intergalactic war, subspace transmissions are rife with one "incident" or another and with the Federation taking a hard stance in 'projecting' their might, you have to be a little careful which puddle you step on. All that aside though, such conflict and tension means work is everywhere.

And that's where we fit in. We'll take any job that offers coin and keeps the 'Dancer flying.

That'll be our overarching plot. Players are welcome (and highly encouraged) to propose plots and/or character specific plots because it affects us all. You've got history on you? Doesn't come as a surprise, ragtag band like us are bound to have some kind of past. We don't judge (or, well, we could), but as the saying goes: what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger. Why else did you join? So here's what's gonna happen, copy/paste and post it for review. General principles apply (no godmod, etc.,etc.). You can submit a plot as many times as you like:

Code: Select all
Player/Character:
What is the plot?:
Is there a Villain?: Yes (and TG Min about the villain; delete the rest) | No (delete the rest) | Hard to explain (explain in this form, delete the rest)
Duration of plot?: quick story, medium length, long story/WIP as we go (delete all that don't apply)
Post frequency?: fast, medium, slow (delete all that do not apply)

Its your decision what kind of plot you make. What is for certain that whatever plot idea you have; it affects us all, remember the one rule of the ship. Not all plots can be done at one time and some may be delayed depending on how the IC develops.

OP MESSAGE
No one-liners.
All roleplay etiquette and forum rules apply.

My Co-OP is Tiltjuice: all apps are approved by me, but it is encouraged to heed advice from Tilt and others helping during the application process. His word is law in my absence up to, and including, killing characters if the situation warrants it. Such decisions/actions are final. In the event I'm absent for an extended period of time (by CTE or other circumstance), Tilt has the option to take the reins of this RP and run it as the player sees fit. No other player has this permission.

Given that this RP is character and story driven, do take care and effort to make your character as rounded as possible in absence of other player/character involvement with your char. While I understand this is not the 'norm' on a forum-style RP, players are encouraged to give as much insight with 'one-shot' posts made in IC to portray and better understand their characters. This is entirely optional, but highly encouraged. Personal story lines ultimately affect the crew, or not, this is at your discretion.

The Story So Far

Yes yes, I'll get to this.

Eventually...

You know I've been recording since you left? Probably said as much since that day, but I suppose bearing a repeat won't hurt. I got a new crew, they seem alright. I nearly hired a gorn, but in the end his... her? Fuck if I can tell... just wasn't the right fit. Of course, what is, right? We barely made it to Ignus Terminal and I asked 'Dancer to keep our resources under wraps, I didn't want Arelle finding out or Banrel bitching at me about being stranded in space. I've never done that, I wasn't about to do that to them either. You're likely frowning at me and I can already hear the chastising about my carelessness, but in truth its not all my fault. The galaxy's off its rocker and while jobs are available, not all jobs are going to keep this ship under the radar - Starfleet not withstanding.

Probably doesn't matter to you, anyway. You're off somewhere fighting the good fight. I can't say I blame you, but I sure as hell miss you.

And Bella, though don't ever tell her I said that.

Computer, end log.

Arelle returns. (party)

I may decide to change her app from the original, though her secondaries will stay the same (Hacking and Underworld Contacts). I'll probably end up making her a total computers specialist and go for Cryptography. Will have to think about it a bit.

One is preferable since we're a small ship. However, if they have a unique dynamic you're looking to play out, submit the apps and I'll consider it ^_^

I wanted to have sort of a boss and guard sort of thing going with a female Furengi who employees a Klingon to keep her safe. I have a few funny senarios to play out, I have a bit of a thing for the laws of acquisition

Name: Suval
Species: 3/4 Vulcan, 1/4 Romulan
Gender: Male
Age: 79
Appearance:
Image

Weapons you've got on you: Type II Phaser, Romulan dagger

Primary Skill: Science contacts
Secondary Skill: Close combat, ranged combat

Personality: Usually stoic and logical, like you'd expect from a Vulcan, but he has recently started allowing himself to experience his emotions, leaving him prone to emotional outburst

Weaknesses/fears: He has only recently begun to allow himself to experience his emotions in their full force, which could potentially be problematic

A little about you: Suval was once a very promising Starfleet officer and talented scientist serving aboard the USS Bismarck. He loved the work he did with Starfleet and proved to be very good at it, making it to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and the post of Chief Science Officer aboard the Bismarck until one fateful day in 2367 would change everything. Not long after the over-zealous Admiral Satie uncovered the secret Romulan heritage of a crewman on the USS Enterprise, a number of Starfleet officers became suspicious of their pointy-eared comrades; unfortunately for Suval one of these officers was the Captain of the Bismarck. The Captain ordered all Vulcan crewmembers to undergo genetic testing to ensure that there were no Romulan agents aboard his ship. Suval knew that this meant a secret he had long held was about to come to light: his mother's father was not Vulcan, but Romulan. Rather than have his secret exposed by the genetic test, Suval told the truth to the Captain. The Captain was furious that Suval had lied for so many years and ordered that he be confined to his quarters until he could be dropped off at the nearest Starbase to await a court-martial.

The trial was fairly short, and while Suval was found innocent of treason, he was guilty of lying about his heritage on his admission form. For this, the judge ruled that he be dishonorably discharged from Starfleet, but did not sentence him to serve any prison time. And so, his once promising career came to a disappointing end. Though he didn't serve any jail time, his dishonorable discharge felt like a life-sentence. It became all but impossible for him to find legitimate work with that on his record, and he certainly had no intention of ever lying on an application again. After returning home to Vulcan for a short while, he spent the next few years drifting around, taking whatever odd jobs he could to survive, until he eventually found his way aboard the Shadowdancer and took a job as a member of the crew.

Hey Mincaldenteans, before I finish my app I wanted to ask for a couple of recommendations. What do you think would be a good primary skill for my character given his background, and what do you think would make for some good weaknesses?

"And if they have jobs, they'll want to spend..." Though technically, doesn't happen for another 2 years but slowly progressing there. A female ferengi with a klingon bodyguard would be interesting, when you app, make their dynamic apparent.

Brusia wrote:Hey Mincaldenteans, before I finish my app I wanted to ask for a couple of recommendations. What do you think would be a good primary skill for my character given his background, and what do you think would make for some good weaknesses?

Depends on the field of science he was in. That said, "Science contacts" could be his primary, it could help contract the crew in simply odd jobs (or not so simple). Also, given his age and being ex-Starfleet, it's likely he might be more knowledgeable in other fields, close combat and another appropriate skill in the secondary skills list.

As for weaknesses. Straight up, if you're familiar with Trek lore, then you know a Vulcan hired hand is sort of rare, there's a basis of logic to follow that compels s/he to be part of the 'underbelly' of society. It should be logical why s/he feels that they cannot pursue other avenues for a career despite background (being slightly Romulan can only be an excuse for so long and omitting that fact isn't that difficult especially if he got away with it in Starfleet). If Suval never completed the ritual to purge all emotions, then exploring that emotional side may be a goal and a weakness as their emotions run deeper that most don't understand.

My two cents.

Science contacts sounds good to me :)

I figured having a dishonorable discharge on his record would be the big problem with his getting a legitimate job, not so much his being part Romulan. I definitely like the idea of him never completing the ritual and beginning to flirt with his emotions. Perhaps if he only started letting them surface recently, his anger at Starfleet over his discharge could be a contributing factor to his ceasing to take crappy but legal odd jobs and deciding to take on extra-legal jobs on the Shadowdancer.

Thanks for the advice!

Name: Alishka Jrom
Species: Frengi
Gender: Female
Age: 27
Appearance: Image
Weapons you've got on you: Ferngi Phaser Image

Primary Skill: Con-Artist
Secondary Skill:Appraisal

Personality: Clever, Sassy, and Greedy define her best, she's willing to sell her own mother for a profit, get her back at half price, and then sell her again.
Weaknesses/fears: Compulsive Gambler, She fears that the old acquisition 94 saying is true "Females and Finance don't mix" and will do anything to prove it wrong, Fears Unions.
A little about you: Alishka is a new up and coming Frengi trader of sorts...Being a female she isn't exactly supposed to be allowed to be in finances. Even still she knows her way around the market place so to speak and had spent a large amount of her time at the Tower of Commerce listening to the Grand Nagus and his financial advise. It has always been her dream to show everyone that a female can change the economic landscape and that a female can do even better then a male as far as making the Latinum flow.

Once she got old enough she managed to stow away on a ship outbound for another planet, little did she know that she was headed directly into a warzone. Interestingly enough after they landed a meeting started between Ferengi smugglers and Klingon Warriors, to which the transaction ended with most of the Klingon dead and the Ferengi escaping with the skin of their lobes, things had not gone as planned. What had started with an insult to a Klingon lead to the insult of a Ferengi mother and it all went down hill from their. However what was the Ferengi smugglers loss was her gain.

Out of the conflict one of the Klingon survived just barely and with a little help he made a full recovery, the Klingon's name is Alac Mvactorgh, a Klingon Warrior and Tactics specialist, disgraced and now owing his life to a Ferengi he could not show his face back within his fleet. Therefore he deserted at least until he debt is repaid to Alishka, and owing your life to a Ferengi is a full time job. One that may never end however, it is one that brings much battle under the right circumstances. Gather what weapons she could from the Klingon ship and having Alac fly it back to the Federation to sell it for profit and possibly sign on with a ship leaving for voyage with her new Klingon Bodyguard she had been placed in a rather interesting position. That was when she found the ShadowDancer, rather then limiting herself to simply working for the federation this ship allowed for much more work, and by extension much more profit. So needless to say she was rather eager to sign up, as well she made it very clear, if she was going Alac was going they where a package deal.

Name: Alac Mvactorgh

Weapons you've got on you: Klingon Bat'leth http://geek-prime.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/new-batleth-Star-trek-Into-darkness.jpg

Klingon Disruptor Rifle http://www.propstore.com/product-images/389/113701.jpg
Primary Skill: Tactical
Secondary Skill: Intimidation

Personality: a Joker to his friends and a stone cold killer to his enemies he is able to snap between friend and foe at the drop of a hat.
Weaknesses/fears: Death, Not being able to repay his debts, his employer .
A little about you: Alac is a warrior, he has always been an Honorable warrior of the Klingon Empire...or at the very least he was up until one faithful day. Up until this point Alac was a warrior who excelled in his duty and was overflowing with pride for his species great empire. That was until his commander tried to make a deal with a Ferengi and it turned horribly wrong. What was supposed to be run for weapons, quickly turned into a military disaster.

Alac hated the idea of it from the very start and he was lucky to make it out with his life. Before collapsing he fired on the Ferengi ship ensuring that they didn't get the latinum they where after. Slowly he awoke to a Ferengi female actually saving his life, needless to say the Klingon was shocked and humiliated. However with this he was given a new chance at life, he was unable to return to the Klingon fleet so instead he stayed with the Ferengi.

Now serving as her personal guard he does anything he can to keep his boss safe, working as a body guard and Intimidation for Alishka he makes a fair living. He doesn't have much to complain about and on the plus side he gets to use some very interesting weapons. All in all their are worse places he could see himself.

Brusia and New Strausberg your apps are approved. I wonder how curmudgeony Alac will be :P

I'll be waiting on a few more apps before I start working on the IC, I also haven't quite figured out if I want to havewavium everyone onto the ship or do introductions/hiring process... maybe a combo of both. I'll decide in due time.

Name: Banrel Keibal
Species: Betazoid (that's his story and he's sticking to it)
Gender: Male
Age: 60 (middle-age zone for his species)
Appearance:
Image

Weapons you've got on you: Type-2 Phaser, Federation Standard x 1 (doesn't wear it - kept stored in quarters); Type-3 Phaser Rifle, circa 2367 x 1 (in decent condition but needs work - stuffed in a case in his closet); a nice travel case containing coercion goodies; a bat'leth and mek'leth gifted to him by an old friend (he does NOT know how to use them - they hang on his wall); an ordinary folding knife that fits in a pocket - nothing fancy about it. OOC: the phasers can be loaned to other characters in a pinch.

Primary Skill: Doctor
Secondary Skill:
  1. Psychic: Betazoid natural ability
  2. Intimidation: applied skill manifested during interrogation procedures
  3. (Wishlist skill) Close combat: He's learned a thing or two about defending himself while taking down aggressive patients. This skill is only applied to these situations.
Personality: Outgoing and sociable enough, and polite to a fault. Yet he also is prone to sullen moods and rare outbursts.
Weaknesses/fears: Banrel is content to portray himself as sensible yet fearless. In reality, he fears his nightmares and all the memories they visit upon him. He takes sedatives at night to stave off some of the pain.
A little about you:
"It is said that an unhappy Betazoid is often quickly discovered and counseled by friends, neighbors, and family, all of whom want to re-establish the pleasant environs. What of the Betazoid that's happy because he's miserable? What if he finds misery comforting? Leave him be. Let him have his fun alone. Ah, but misery loves company. Why else would I be on the Dancer? Don't get me wrong. I like it here. I like the fact that there's a bit of oversight and accountability. I didn't have that in my old organization and, although I appreciated the freedom such an arrangement offered, I also felt it lacked support from those higher in the ranks.

"And now, Captain, if you please? You're a busy man. I have medical profiles to complete. The sooner I assess you, the faster you can get back to what you do best. So kindly turn your head and cough..."

Banrel Keibal's history is difficult to come by, and only Nathan Farris has a vague understanding of his background. He's proven himself as a damn good physician both in sick bay and in the field. He is former Starfleet, medically trained through their Academy, but his service record (what little there is of it) is remarkably bland.

He's passionate about his work but his brilliance and passion have a dark side, and that side is tied to the dismal shadows of Section 31: Banrel is also a skilled interrogator. His medical knowledge, coupled with his mother's species ability, make him an intimidating force in any investigation. Yet, like any operative (current or former), his contact with his organization is limited. They contact him, in other words, and he's left to drift at all other times. He doesn't seem to mind. This little morsel in his history is the direct cause of his nightmares, however, and the direct cause of his prematurely-grey hair. As a Betazoid, his dreams touch all senses to include the memory of his subject's pain.
