2019: The Shattered World
Following the Union's Defeat in 1864, the Confederacy remained a sovereign nation. They cut off all trade with the north, greatly damaging both economies. However, due to the South's close relation with the European powers, the Confederacy managed to bounce back relatively easily. The Union, on the other hand, managed to barely scrape by. Infighting in congress led to a political gridlock, with nothing getting done to repair the broken economy. Riots spread across the North's cities. By 1890, the United States was no more. Starting with the New California Republic forming in 1875, more states soon began to secede. The Great Lakes Union was formed in 1881, The Rockies Republic in 1882, with the remnants of former United States government forming the United States of Columbia. The New California Republic, albeit newly formed, was able to Annex Hawaii in 1899.
In the Confederacy, things were much better. The Economy was becoming more modernized, with factories springing up in most major cities, while the Agricultural industry was booming due to heavy exporting to Europe. In 1870, the Confederacy was able to Purchase Alaska. In the 1880s, a more Liberal government came to power, and Slavery was soon being phased out, before being completely banned in 1910.
In Europe, the First World War again broke out, Instead of the United States entering on the side of the Allies, the Confederacy joined with the Allied powers, while the newly formed Republics in the north continued to gather strength. WW1 again ended in 1919, with the Allied powers on top and the Russian Revolution in full swing.
WW2 again broke out, with the NCR's Hawaiian Territory being bombed by the Japanese in 1941. All the now powerful North American Republics entered a fairly strong alliance. The Great Lakes Union was the main production center of the north for weapons, tanks, and aircraft, while the NCR was the main Naval power. From the USC came most of the greatest Commanders and Scientists. The Confederacy, on the other hand, supplied the men. The Rockies Republic was the center of Top Secret development. New Mexico had become a Neutral Area following the Dissolving of the Union, and as such was where a good portion of testing and international training exercises were held. World War Two again ended in an Axis Defeat in 1945. Only Two nuclear bombs had been developed, and both had been used. Following the War, the five powers sent their respective Special Forces teams to Los Alamos to secure the plans for the nuclear weapons. Only the NCR and Confederacy managed to secure the needed Scientists and Plans, with the other republics failing. All in all 37 Americans had been killed in what was known as the 'Los Alamos Skirmish'
The Cold War broke out right after, with the American Republics either neutral or on the side of the West. The only Neutral power was the NCR which was busy working on primarily scientific endeavors, with weapon development also fairly popular. By 1960 the Confederacy had already produced a sizable amount of nuclear weapons as well. That same year, the Confederacy launched the first Satellite into space. The Soviets, as usual, put the first Monkey in space. Finally, in 1967, the NCR put the first men on the moon.
NOTES: The USC and the NCR are the two most powerful American Republics. The USC is still widely referred to as the former US, and as such, is still highly influential. The CSA on the other hand fell from power in the 50 year span from the beginning of the cold war to 2019 and is now fairly weak economically while moderately strong militarily. It still influences some politics, but mostly locally. The Great Lakes Union is fairly strong economically and militarily, and about on par with the CSA.
