The 7th Year of His Majesty's Reign
The dockyards of Enqueche, these days, were a sight that one might despair to see. It was once, one could glance from their home and look down upon the sailors at the docks unloading cargo from all across the known world, from the grapes of the fertile Gods' Mouth to iron from the far southeast corner of Melanta. It was once, all trade, whether it was routed north of the Gods' Mouth and through the archipelago that Enqueche proudly called home, or directly through the Mouth itself, was controlled by the island nation through trading outposts along the length and delta of the River Eerie, or the trading fleets that once roamed the waters of the known world, a grand navy both feared and respected. It was once that people called Enqueche the Center of the World. Culturally, financially, and in terms of the never ending global power play. Now, the docks were pitifully empty. A single galleon sat in dock, with its sails in tatters and a noticeable list to the port. It had likely arrived here and given permission to dock only because of an awful storm, if it was a foreign ship.
All of these things a young woman with great ambitions and but one obstacle observed. She was recognized by all as the Queen of Enqueche, once a mighty island nation now reduced to an isolationist, xenophobic, backwards place. The laughing stock of the world. Her title as queen was nothing but to designate she was the king's wife - she held no officially recognized power. Not even when the beggars in the streets and the members of the king's court all agreed that something had broken what was once an intelligent, if young and inexperienced, king.
Some have said that the death of his third daughter was what sapped him of life. Three times the king had been blessed with children, but three times they were all victims of mysterious circumstances. One murdered in the crib, one dead of a sudden fever, and the final one simply...disappeared in the night. That had been five years ago, two years into the king's reign. Since then he has shut himself and his nation out from the world. A majority of the trade fleet and navy dismantled. Trading posts torn down or abandoned. Worst of all, this age was one of great discoveries.
Across the world, tales of an unknown land were beginning to surface. A land rich in gold, spice, exotic life, and even men who claimed to be the sons of gods. All of this sounded like nothing more than an opportunity to this young queen - to further her own position, and the wealth of her home. Perhaps, even, to be rid of this mad king once and for all, and attempt to save this nation from the crisis he created.
Hello all! I've always had this little aching desire for an RP in an Age of Exploration/Fantasy type of setting, a successful one anyway, and recently came across sufficient motivation to attempt to OP one! If you bothered to read, you understand that the basic backstory is centered around an island nation of Enqueche. Once a nation powerful and respected, under the rule of a king clearly gone mad the nation's influence has evaporated quickly and drastically. The queen is irritated with her lack of ability to act, and this would be where our story begins. The Queen's Fleet will be her discrete attempt to bring Enqueche back into global relevance, through going behind the king's back with her small number of allies in both parliament and abroad, and to use her band of privateers to reestablish trade routes and diplomacy.
Most prominently however, and the focus of the RP, the Queen's Fleet is a band of explorers that she will use to explore the rumors of a far away land of wealth, and to exploit its riches and chart its lands for her future plans - colonization and domination of this opportunity.
This is simply a thread to gauge interest in such an idea before I commit to anything properly, though I do have many of the elements already worked out. It's also a place for suggestions and questions, so I'll be happy to hear them all! :3

Name: Steven Creech
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Appearance:
Position in Crew: Captain of the carrack Trinity
Personality: Obviously, a man entrusted with captaining such an important, secretive force will be an almost natural born leader of men and women. The young man knows no fear, though it is likely because he's never truly been in the tightest of situations on the waves or in battle on land. While inexperienced, his courage is a great asset. His skill in speech and diplomacy, manipulation, alongside this makes him the representative that their fair queen was looking for to guide her secret fleet around the known world and beyond. The captain suffers from insomnia, and can often be found on the decks at night, restless. He seems unaffected, at least for the most part, by his lack of sleep however.
Skillset: The leadership qualities mentioned above made him an excellent sailor in the navy before much of the fleet was disbanded and sold off. The command of the Queen's Fleet will be his first true captaining of a vessel. His skill in swordplay (which he came upon when sailing up and down the Gods' Mouth) is quite unique in that, unlike most 'gentleman sailors' he fights with two swords, like some kind of exotic barbarian in the eyes of his peers. He is also capable of helming the ship himself, though he will typically leave it to his crew, of course.
Bio: The young Steven Creech was a sailor from the age of 19 - once a young boy who sought to escape the toil and bore of life on a farm, he enlisted with the then grand navy, and was lucky enough to be aboard a man o' war sailing in the Gods' Mouth during his early years in the fleet. They kept safe from pirates and other such characters the vital trade posts in the region, and his service aboard the massive ship as helmsman gave him experience in maneuvering the largest of vessels.
When docked, he spent a lot of time with the blademasters of the exotic nomad tribes that moved about the rocky deserts outside of the fertile riverbanks of the Gods' Mouth, and here he learned how to fight in a not so gentlemanly manner. Wielding two blades in battle gives an advantage to both his ability to attack and defend himself, and for most of his short career he's been perfecting his craft more than using it. His skill fighting in this style is, still, quite lethal.
When a majority of the navy was disbanded when the king's isolationist policies came into effect, he was left without a respectable job for some time. He would've enlisted in the merchant navy, but even that was shrinking rapidly. He decided to carry on in the armed forces, serving in the army for a brief span of years that allowed him to see just how difficult life was beginning to become under this self-imposed blockade that was strangling Enqueche. His fury with the court for doing nothing to dethrone their king despite his clear insanity was the major reason he decided to take up the queen's cause and risk being called a traitor, as well as the enticing opportunity of captaining his own crew. She was looking for someone young, relatively unknown, yet capable, and he fit the bill.
