1503 Anno Domini - The New World
IC Thread
Image

It is a brave time, a hard time. Across the Atlantic ships have returned from the west, bearing news of a Terra Incognita beyond the horizon, across the turbulent waters. The nations and monarchies of Europe have all raised expeditions to go explore the new world and claim it for glory and fortune, and the waves are full of ships bearing men and women hopeful for a new life. Some flee religious persecution, others hope for an opportunity to prosper away from stifling social confines, still others simply want to become filthy rich and swim in oceans of gold. But they all sail, and the storm-winds drive the westward to new lands.

You are one of those people, a captain of a ship of colonists brought together by a venture to take land for yourself in this new world. Sailing under charter to the Grand Duchy of Maravia from the Caribbean port of Wrenshaven, the beautiful blue seas of the placid ocean greet your vessel, and you have heard word of fertile islands and lush green lands farther west. You are not alone though- other ships also sail under charter from Wrenshaven, under the watchful eye of Lord Northborough of Maravia, and other European powers too are not likely to leave such bountiful lands alone for long. You must rush to stake your claim to this new world, and make your own destiny.

The tide is out, and your sails fill, the crew running to and fro to catch the wind in the canvas yards. Your hold is full of tools and materials to erect a settlement on some foreign shore, and in the bowels of the vessel colonists wait anxiously, hoping that you will take them to better lives. Your first order of business is to set your rudder and plunge over the horizon, in search of an island to settle. What is your heading, Captain?

Hey all, welcome to 1503 AD. This is just a little colonization RP I dreamt up one morning, but I hope you'll all enjoy it. The premise is simple- you head a charter company bound for the Caribbean, to establish a colony there. If the colony prospers or perishes will be up to your decisions, so choose wisely. This will be a pretty laid-back casaul RP with a bit of city-building in it, but if you really want to brigand about with your ship that's cool too.

Without more to say, here's an app for you.

Details

There are some details you should be aware of- your resources are limited, so you'll have to consider carefully how to use them in order to help your colony prosper. Each of your ships is a Small Merchantman, which carries twenty Tools, twenty Wood, and twenty Food.

Every RL day a month passes in the IC. Every month at sea your crew eats one Food, which you'll need to support Colonists once you land, so carefully consider how long you should spend looking around for the perfect island to settle on. Every captain starts with 2000 Ducats.

Building: Cost: Effect: Upkeep
Frontier Shacks: Costs 3 Wood: House 2 Pioneers, which pay 3 Ducats a month in tax : Upkeep 1 Food per 20 Pioneers
Chapel: Costs 5 Wood, 100 Ducats, 2 Tools: Satisfies light Religion desire of population for up to 30 Houses : Upkeep 5 Ducats per month
Marketplace: Costs 10 Wood, 200 Ducats, 4 Tools: Expands Max Stocks by 10, and Land Area by 20 SM : Upkeep 10 Ducats per month
Woodsman: Costs 2 Tools, 50 Ducats: Cuts 3 Wood every Month if in Forested region, 2 Wood in Light Forest : Upkeep 5 Ducats
Hunting Lodge: Costs 2 Tools, 50 Ducats: Hunts 2 Food of local game every Month if in Forested region : Upkeep 5 Ducats
Shepherd: Costs 8 Wood, 4 Tools, 100 Ducats: Produces 2 Wool every month : Upkeep 8 Ducats
Weaver: Costs 6 Wood, 3 Tools, 200 Ducats: Can turn 4 Wool into 2 Cloth every month : Upkeep 10 Ducats
Fishery: Costs 5 Wood, 3 Tools, 100 Ducats: Produces 1 Food every month, 0.5 if in areas of only normal Fish stocks : Upkeep 3 Ducats
Tiny Warehouse: Costs 6 Wood, 3 Tools, 100 Ducats: Adds 20 SM to Land Area, Stores 30 Stock : Upkeep 30 Ducats

Addition to Trade Charts: Ensures Free Traders will be aware of the establishment of the colony, boosting the likelihood of passive trading: 20 Renown (one-time)
Settlement Charter: Registers the colony as a town, allowing the recruitment of 50 free Colonists: 30 Renown (one-time)
Gift of Gold: Captain gains 500 Ducats: 50 Renown
Finely-Made Sails: Ship gains 20% speed: 30 Renown
Small Garrison: Allows the construction of a free Harbor Defense Tower when delivered to a Colony: 20 Renown
Brace of Dueling Pistols: Useful in Captain to Captain combat: 30 Renown (per captain)
Native Translator: Allows non-hostile communication with indigenous tribes: 50 Renown
Maravian Settlement: Gain 10 Colonists: 10 Renown

10 Tools available for 110 Ducats each
30 Wood available for 30 Ducats each
5 Wool available for 19 Ducats each
30 Food available for 25 Ducats each
5 Cloth available for 40 Ducats each
520 Colonists can be recruited for 20 Ducats each

As folks progress in the IC this will be fleshed out, with more actions revealed, more buildings to make, whatnot.

So, you have the rules pre-written? That actually makes a lot of sense. I'll probably try that some time.

Can we only go for the Caribbean?
I'm more interested in the north!

Well, after a fashion. There will be more temperate northern islands (akin to the Carolines in climate) that can be settled, depending on latitude, and more southern true Caribbean islands.

Polar Svalbard wrote:Maybe Puerto Rico? Hmmm

This is actually set in the "Caribbean" in the meaning that similar setting, but not the actual islands, or whatnot. That would be fun, but I prefer an unknown map with unknown islands.

Sail off into the wild blue yonder- that's why the OP asks your heading :P

Protip though: there aren't islands east of Wrenhaven.

Say, G-tech, was this RP inspired by... Anno (1602, 1503, 1701, 1404, 2070)?
If so, you are ought to make the numbers of the years its taking place in add up to 9.

I didn't actually expect you to go into the trouble of changing the title.

Ubisoft may now sue you, you know. 1512 or 1610 would have been a better solution in my humble opinion.

Captain's Name: John Alfson
Ship's Name: Conquer of the Seas
Biography of Captain: Born in London, John was born into a family of sailors. In fact, there was evidence among his family that they first came to England as Viking raiders and settled with the locals. Using almost all of his family's funds, he opened a company himself and set out, leading his small ship to the new world. He carried mostly farmers and builders with him, knowing that the new world would be harsh and he would need to grow crops and build houses for him and his men as soon as possible and he allowed the crew to take their familes with them, making the ship so crowded that you couldnt see a yard before you see people. But he knew it was worth it since it keep the men happy and how could they sustain a colony without females?
Description of Captain: Born in a sailing family, john is very used to the ship and is a great sailor but could be at times arrogant and mean to the crew. Has blonde hair and blue eyes, he is a tall man. the blonde hair and blue eyes are even more evidence of his norse background

Captain's Name: Aleš Černý

Biography of Captain: Aleš Černý was born in Prague and at 10 moved with his uncle to Maravia. His uncle paid his schooling to become a sailor. At 20 he finished his schooling got a job at a merchant exporting valuable merchandise. Eventually he earned enough money and bought the Český Lev to settle the New World in the name of Maravia.

His long blonde hair and bright, blue eyes extremely stand out among other sailors. He has a thick, blonde mustache and bushy eyebrows.

Well, one thing- you only start with one ship, and it isn't exactly a warship, possessing a weak hull and only five cannon.

Interesting. Note that you don't have to actually come from Maravia, you can simply be chartered by their government. Regardless, accepted.

I have a question. Do I have to be taking colonists or can I be taking explorers and woodsmen? Like more French style, less English Style.

Sure, that's fine. You can build your colony any way you like, within reason. Just talk to me about any differences you'd like, since the only thing I've really planned for is the Portuguese/Spanish/English/Dutch system of settling on new islands.
