PAX PER BELLUM: An Alt-History RP

IC | UPDATES/APPS

It was Rome that paved the way for the great Empires of this age. The world's first superpower, a technological marvel, a military machine. All stood in awe of this great Empire. But glory cannot last forever. Rome fell in 476AD, and the nations that were left in its wake had to seek their own destiny. Powers rose, powers fell, blood was spilled across Europe, and indeed the world as nations carved out territory. None were able to fulfil the legacy that the great Roman Empire had left for the world.

It is 1705. The world is changing. Sword and shield is replaced by bayonet and musketball. Longboats are replaced by great sailing ships. And the New World provides opportunities like never before. And yet, the legacy of Rome still hangs in the air, coveted by all the nations. The balance of power is about to be altered forever. Will you claim the title?

A note from OP
So, everybody, welcome to yet another alt-history RP set in the colonial era. I felt like going back to basics, and so I've decided to OP this little thing. Point of deviation is 476AD, the fall of the Roman Empire. You can have some pretty wild ideas, just as long as nothing is too OP.

Byzantine Empire
Image
"Heirs to Rome, Heirs to Alexander"

Full Nation Name: The Byzantine Empire

Short Nation Name: Byzantium

National Flag: Here

Territory: Already on the map

Official Language(s): Greek & Latin

Form of Government: Absolute Imperial Monarchy

Head of State: Alexios III Palaiologos

Head of Government: Alexios III Palaiologos

Capital City: Constantinople

Population:
- Anatolia: 5 million
- Greece: 1 million
- Balkans: 1.6 million
- Bulgaria-Romania-Moldova: 3 million
- Hungary: 1.4 million
- Other: 0.7 million
TOTAL: 12.7 million

Religion: As the seat of Orthodox Christianity, Orthodoxy is by far the most predominant religion. An Imperial Inquisition exists to ensure that every citizen is following the correct faith. Other forms of Christianity are more acceptable than Islam or other heathen faiths, with the Inquisition treating Christians far better than Muslims. A series of theological disputes led to a Great Schism between the Catholic and Orthodox churches in 1404. Catholic-Orthodox relations have slowly healed, but the Orthodox church will not reunite with the Catholic one. The Byzantine Imperial family will only accept royal marriages if the other party will convert to Orthodoxy.

Army: 381,000 Troops – 170 Infantry Regiments, 80 Cavalry Regiments, 131 Artillery Regiments
The Imperial Byzantine Army holds up the proud Greco-Roman military tradition. The men are extensively trained before they become a member of the army itself. Often troops will be taught to fight in extremely hot climates to prepare them for the reconquest of Jerusalem. Entrenchment and barricade training is also prevalent throughout the Army, which ties in with the widespread fear of invasion. Army members are the particularly fervent nationalists from the country, more so than the rest of the populace. This is especially true with the Army’s officers. The Empire keeps a large standing army - even during peacetime - due to fear of invasion, which is used to quell unrest and rebellion throughout the Empire.

Navy: 15 Frigates, 35 Galleys, 20 Flutes
While there is less of a focus on the Imperial Navy, it is still well-funded and maintained. The Navy employs a small number of frigates to patrol and keep trade routes in Constantinople, the Black Sea, and Ragusa secure. Galleys are employed as military ships, which are more effective in the inland seas of the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The Navy maintains a small amount of flutes in case armies need to be ferried around the Empire quickly. Many who go on to be sailors in the Imperial Navy have had a mercantile history, and they know the waters of the Mediterranean well. They receive a programme of additional military training to supplement their knowledge.

Economic Strength: Byzantium was, and still is, a flourishing trade nation. Constantinople is the world’s largest city and a huge trade hub, connecting Europe to Asia. Crimea and Ragusa, while relatively less important in comparison, are still thriving centres of trade in their own right. Byzantium has been made rich from its past trading history. However, as the new age ushers in and the Renaissance comes to a close, Byzantium’s trade is threatened. The Italian city-states, the New World: new centres of trade are becoming more important. Cities like London and Paris are beginning to rival Constantinople. Byzantium is beginning to turn to military means to secure its trade dominance in the Mediterranean, and to kickstart the nation out of decline.

Infrastructure: Infrastructure has been developed since the Roman era, with many roads reaching many corners of the empire. However, while there is a lot of infrastructure, most of it is outdated - only city roads and important connections have been fully maintained.

Primary Goals: In the short-term, build up alliances and keep the Byzantine trade tradition alive and flowing. In the... medium-term? Mid-term? Anyway, restore the Pentarchy, taking Rome, Alexandria, Aleppo, and Jerusalem. Finally, in the long term, fulfil our destiny as Greeks and become the heirs to Alexander, conquering from Mesopotamia through Persia to India.

History:
The fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476AD was a wake-up call for much of the Byzantine population. Stories came into the country of lootings, burnings, all manner of atrocities in the Italian peninsula. The event was used by Emperor Zeno to unite the Byzantine Empire, which previously had been rife with rebellion. During his reign, he was able to reform the nation into a more Greek Roman Empire, and stabilise the Empire with multiple reforms. In 485, the Eastern Roman Empire was officially reformed into the Byzantine Empire. However, despite this, it was claimed by Zeno and most of the Byzantine people that they were the true and only successors to the great Roman Empire, a legacy they hold onto dearly. The Emperor still holds the title ‘Lawful Roman Emperor’, and Latin is recognised as a state language along with the far more predominant Greek.

Byzantium had been beset upon by the conquests of Muslim nations in the 12th and early 13th centuries. The turning point of these conquests was the Fourth Crusade from 1202-1208. Here, Byzantine forces joined with the armies of France and the Holy Roman Empire to suppress Islam in the Levant. The large armies of the three powerful nations were able to overwhelm the Muslim forces. Byzantium had the goal of reconquering the Holy Land, but their ambitions were checked by the Holy Roman Empire and France, who, while not the firmest of allies, banded together to block further Byzantine expansion. Not wanting to risk further Byzantine casualties after a long 6-year war, the Byzantine troops withdrew back to Anatolia. This worsened relations between the three countries, especially Byzantine-HRE relations. Before the crusade, the Byzantines had denounced the HRE as a ‘pretender state’ with only Byzantium as the true heir to Rome, and had only reluctantly agreed to work with the HRE after French negotiations. As such, the Byzantines began to see the French as traitors after the fourth crusade.

Byzantium mostly turned its head toward internal reform of the administration and military during the centuries that followed the fourth crusade. The Orthodox religion was firmly embedded in the peoples of Greece, Anatolia, the Balkans, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania. Missionaries were sent around the known world in attempts to spread the Orthodox faith. Upon learning of the discovery of the New World, Byzantium constructed ships for expeditions to this new land and, after a few unsuccessful first attempts; Byzantine ships began to reach the New World. They carried missionaries with them also in an attempt to spread Orthodoxy to the Americas. These centuries saw Byzantium conquer and integrate a few small provinces in Europe, as well as successfully defending its territory from emerging and old powers in both the Middle East and Europe.

Now, Byzantium longs for the glory days of the past, as well as a place in this new world that is being forged. The time has come for the Greeks to flex their muscles, and show the world once more what they are capable of!

Interesting. I was in another 1700s RP that died fairly quickly, so perhaps now is my chance to try again. I think I may even reuse parts of my app from my first 1700s RP. May I reserve the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth?

Primary Goals: Establish the Baltic Sea as a "Mare Nostrum" long-term, establish peace and internal security short-term
History:
In the Beginning (1000-1235)

Swedish Vikings tended to travel into Russia more often than the rest of Europe, and by 1000 AD Swedish settlements stretched across the Baltic from the Gulf of Bothnia to the Gulf of Riga. As they tended to stay from English influence and, under Erik Dalgaard, their first king, and his descendants, were generally unfriendly towards German missionaries, the Swedes were converted from Norse paganism to Christianity relatively late.

pending on whether or not this bit is needed: [Sweden later on did attempt American colonization, although considering that the first exploration ended up in Mexico, they weren't very good at it.]

The first crusades, being targeted towards the Middle East, of which Sweden is not often considered a part of, were relatively harmless to the burgeoning Swedish Kingdom. Of course, Sweden at this point controlled parts of Latvia, Lapland, Estonia, Finland, and Norway, and it was no surprise in 1126 when a Northern Crusade was launched at Sweden's territorial holdings.

The Swedes fought well against the Danes and Poles, but by the turn of the thirteenth century they had lost much of their southern coast and possessions in Estonia and Latvia. It was no surprise when the nation began to hastily convert to Christianity, but by 1227, when Catholicism became the official religion of a newly created southern Swedish kingdom, referred to by some as a Danish puppet, everything north of modern-day Småland was Danish, and the formerly mighty Baltic colonies had been lost to Poland.

Sweden: Divided and Conquered (1235 - 1445)

In 1235, a revolt in Swedish Finland and parts of northern Sweden lead to the creation of the Fenno-Swedish Kingdom in 1301. The Kingdom attempted to enforce Norse worship within its borders, staying relatively isolationist and building up a considerable naval force to thwart Southern Sweden's attempts to

A vastly weakened Swedish Kingdom reluctantly joined the Kalmar Union in 1388, their trade economy crippled by the Hanseatic League. When Denmark's series of wars against the Hanseatic League ended in dismal failure, however, South Sweden in 1436 seceded from the Kalmars under Karl Gustavson.

While South Sweden's economy had been crippled, the Fenno-Swedish Kingdom had managed to survive and even occasionally thrive. While they were too far north to play a major role in the Hanseatic League, trade between the Fenno-Swedes and the Hanseatic League was a key component of the nation's economy. As the majority of its population was of Finnish descent, the monarchy slowly began to become more and more Finnish as time went on, and in 1418 changed its name to the Unified Kingdom of Finland and Lapland. By 1438, however, the Finns had effectively taken over the monarchy, the Swedes living in Finland and Lapland becoming increasingly disillusioned with their rulers. In 1445, by request from the local nobility, Sweden unified for the first time in over two hundred years as an officially secular kingdom, the Union of Sweden and Lapland.

[b]Sweden Mk. II: European Middleweight (1445-1487)

By the time Sweden had conquered Estonia in 1482, it had established itself as a powerful trade nation in the Baltic Sea. At this point, Sweden attempted to annex a more southern path to the North Sea, and as such in 1483 declared war on Denmark. The Thousand Days' War, as it has since been called, stretched from late 1483 to early 1486 as Sweden and Denmark struggled over possession of Norway - in the end Denmark had the vision to cede parts of Norway in order to cross the strait back into Malmö, and the war is generally considered a Danish-favoring stalemate.

Towards the end of the sixteenth century, the Swedes had ceded parts of their southern coast but had captured part of Norway. Aside from this change, the borders at the end of 1582 looked just like the borders at the end of 1482. Now, they began to turn their attention elsewhere - the New World.

The Early Swedish Colonization Era (1583-1613)

In 1583, the first Swedish fleets were launched from Swedish Norway towards the New World with the aim of securing a colony. In this they succeeded, landing around the coast of what is now Delaware-New Jersey and naming it Nya Sverige. The colony grew quickly and began to expand and thrive as more and more Swedes were sent to the New World. In the following ten years, the colony's population grew to nearly 1,500.

Of course, there were some minor diplomatic conflicts with the Dutch, but after a lot of grandstanding it fortunately didn't amount to much, and the colony rapidly expanded to include a few territories stretching to the northernmost coast of New Jersey at the end of 1608. Of course, soon it all wouldn't matter...

Back to the Baltic: The Thirty Years War and the Swedish-Polish War (1613-1664)

At the outbreak of the Thirty Years War, Sweden controlled all of northern Norway, Nya Sverige, a few Baltic bits and pieces, and almost all of Sweden, the Danish stubbornly maintaining a stronghold in the south. Sweden, interested in the German and Polish Baltic Coast, entered the war on the Anti-Habsburg side. The still religiously diverse Swedes, who had a small percentage of pagans as well as both Lutherans and a Catholic majority, joined not for the religious aspect of the war, but to further extend their boundaries. After their intervention in 1629, the Swedes began to attack on the German and Polish coast, making steady progress. When Denmark switched sides, it was the perfect opportunity for Sweden to reclaim Danish bases in Malmö and Gothenburg. All in all, despite heavy casualties, the Thirty Years War was a victory for Sweden.

The defeated Poles seemed as good a target as any, and the Swedish Kingdom began to push down through Estonia into the formerly Polish Latvia, and took many German and Polish territories along the Baltic Sea, including Swedish Pomerania and Bremen-Verden. Tensions between Sweden and Poland-Lithuania began to mount, and in 1657 Sweden decided to launch a full-out invasion of Poland-Lithuania with Russia as willing allies. Under Karl X, the Swedes were successful in taking Krakow after a long siege, but when Russia turned at the king's death, their march towards Warsaw was stalled and eventually reversed.

Defeated in 1664, the Swedish reluctantly retreated out of all of their southern holdings but Bremen-Verden. Still, the fire of war had been sparked, and the soon-to-be Swedish Empire had no intention of quenching the flames...

Militarization and the Mare Nostrum (1664-1681)

Much of Sweden's troubles in the Thirty Years and Baltic Wars had been their outdated military, and as such Karl XI resolved to militarize the nation. In 1671, Sweden invaded Finland over two hundred years after the Finnish-North Swedish kingdom had dissolved. Finland was caught unawares and Helsinki fell in 1676. Sweden proceeded to annex Ingria in 1677 to Russia's dismay, and with their takings of Mälmo, Ingria, and Estonia, many thought Sweden had made far too many enemies. The young king Karl XI, at the start of the Great Northern War in 1679, was just twenty-four, and the Count Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld was placed in command of the military.

A coalition of Denmark-Norway and Russia managed to quickly outflank Sweden, but the shrewd Rehnskiöld managed to advance the army southwards in Norway while holding ground elsewhere. In an attempt to appease Poland-Lithuania and keep them out of the coalition, Sweden ceded to the Poles the entirety of Bremen-Verden. But while the Polish chose to stay out of the war, the Netherlands were a surprise addition to the coalition, invading the flourishing, burgeoning colony of Nya Sverige. Still, Sweden was losing ground quickly, and Rehnskiöld's surrender in 1679 brought in a new peace, albeit one without Ingria, Karelia, or Bremen-Verden; or perhaps far more importantly, the re-conquest of Malmö.

Rehnskiöld, while keeping Swedish losses minimal and even managing a southwards gain in Norway, had no intention of relinquishing power, and he continued the process of militarization after deposing Karl XI in the short but bloody Swedish Civil War (1679-1681). The Civil War, which Rehnskiöld eventually won, exposed the schisms in Sweden in opinions of religion, militarization, and ethnicities, and the Empire began showing a few chinks in the armor. Still, in 1681 the Swedish Empire still retained great power and territory, stretching from Trondheim to Tallinn, although nobody was sure if it could last...

Sweden Under Rehnskiöld (1681 - 1704)

Under Rehnskiöld, by now Gustav I, the Swedish Empire practiced the oxymoronic dual principles of extreme naval militarization and appeasement. Domestically, however, brief and unsuccessful revolts in Finland and Lapland troubled the new king, and Nya Sverige was still barely holding back the angry Dutch.

Rehnskiöld was a competent leader, managing to suppress the protests, but they continued to spring up over Sweden's extreme militarization. Eventually, with rebellion seeded throughout the kingdom, trouble seemed inevitable. Until Rehnskiöld died without an heir.

After intense confusion, dissatisfaction at Gustav's reign lead to the coronation of the audacious, precocious Charles XII in late 1704, bringing Sweden back to its original line. Now, Sweden remains mighty, but a border teeming with uneasy peace and revolt within the kingdom may change that...

Full Nation Name: Federation of the West Indies
Short Nation Name: West Indies
National Flag: Image
Territory: West Indies (see map)
Official Language(s): English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Dutch
Form of Government: Unitary parliamentary republic
Head of State and Government: Lord William Eddlestone Cooke
Capital City: Kingston, Jamaica
Population: 2.2 million (110,000 white, 2,090,000 black and other ethnicities
Religion: Protestant, Catholic and Rastafari (I know it didn't exist in 1705 but come on). All of the country is incredibly religious, thus religion has quite a strong hold on the politics each of the islands.
Army: 8,000 troops. 65 companies of 100 infantry each. 10 companies of 100 cavalry each. 5 companies of artillery (including escorts and crews)
The rank and file troops are free blacks and the officers are white. The army favours skirmishes and guerrilla warfare as opposed to line battles as the terrain of their country generally does not suit conventional warfare. Theoretical training does not exist and all is learned from veterans and experience. As a result the quality of the army depends incredibly on the experience of the unit fighting and its preferences.
The soldiers normally join their master’s battalions when they are set free and stay loyal to them above anything else – a little like a clan chieftain. The battalions are dotted around the larger islands in fort towns, with militia to guard the smaller ones, and are able to be ferried to places of crisis quite quickly.
They are all armed with smoothbore muskets and machetes, apart from the officers who carry Munich swords or, if they are of Scottish decent, Highland swords and flintlock pistols.
During peace-time or times when slave rebellions aren't imminent, the army is used to help improve and maintain the infrastructure and economy of the country.
Navy:
2 first rates
4 second rates
22 third rates
12 fourth rates
53 frigates
Being a nation of many islands, the quality of the navy is of paramount importance to the survival of the country. It protects trade and coastal towns from piracy and any enemies of the state. As a result of its constant watch, the navy is incredibly experienced, versatile and able. As in the army, the officers and marines are white men whereas the sailors are black. However, unlike in the army, flogging is forbidden. Instead punishments include a decrease in rations or extra work.
The equipment for the navy is the same as the army’s apart from the fact that the ramrods are made of wood to avoid rusting in the sea.
Economic Strength: The nation thrives on the export of sugar and sugar-based goods such as rum, coffee, tobacco, quinine, cocoa and spices. It is a very wealthy nation, but it is vastly agricultural with little industry, and the economy is driven by slavery. Every year about 32,000 slaves are imported from Africa using the West Indian merchant fleet, to make up for the premature deaths of thousands of slaves and to meet the demands of growing plantations
Infrastructure: The roads connecting the towns are little more than dirt tracks, making travel by road slow and laborious. It is often quicker to take a ferry from one side of the island to another. The roads inside the larger towns are paved however and the harbours and dockyards are some of the best in the world. Slaves live in slave towns and villages, just outside the plantations on which they work, whereas the upper and middle class whites live in the larger houses and manors in the towns or countryside with the lower class whites living in small houses in urban areas.
Primary Goals: Unite all colonies in the tropics in the Americas under one flag to have a monopoly on trade and provide a solid block of military power against any insurgencies.
History: Much the same until the 1600s.
During the time of colonisation the colonies grew more quickly and links in between each of the islands were made through commerce and the gentry. The economies of the islands thrived due to a huge influx of slaves from Africa, meaning that more land could be worked, which led to greater exports.
The English Revolution/Civil War (1642-1651) provided the perfect opportunity for the colonies, who supported Charles I, to break away from England and Scotland. They did so with relative ease and surprisingly little political turmoil, welcoming exiles and fugitives from Cromwell's puritan dictatorship. Having consolidated their independence, they sent out a rallying call for the colonies of other countries in the Caribbean to join their new confederation, promising prosperity and equality for all freedmen. The power struggle and succession in Madrid made it possible for the Spanish colonies in the Caribbean to join the federation. So far all of the islands of the Caribbean Sea have joined the federation, and now the country looks to the American mainland to expand their territory and economic power.
The country welcomes all exiles from all countries, especially white Europeans, who will aid them in their cause to unite the American colonies. Due to the Stuarts losing the English Civil War and the Glorious Revolution, the West Indies are particularly hateful of Great Britain's current monarch and very favourable to those who would support the Stuarts again.
Being one of the oldest modern settlements of the New World, the citizens of the Federation, especially the white population, have developed a particular arrogance of the humans they see as lesser, for example the native Arawak and Caribs, as well as the natives on the mainland Americas, and of course African races. Social tension exists between each of these groups as there are often clashes between the slave population and the natives as a result of the enlargement of slave towns. These clashes almost always end with the deaths of some slaves, causing planters to go on a retributive culling due to their property being damaged.
RP Example: (unless I know you well)

Will put more on the history tomorrow.

Hmm. Debating between Vandals or White Huns in their vaguely historical areas.

Edit: Or possibily Soissons forming the HRE in place of the Carolingians.

I certainly hope we'll have no conflicts of interest... or do I?

Hmm... I'm not so sure about having such a large independent North American nation in 1705, could we reduce the claim a bit?

Someone's nabbed Poland-Lithuania, so Vandals are kinda out.

The White Huns could be interesting, as could the Soissons - however as Viperia has reserved Prussia, he could write the history of the HRE.

I meant more the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa, rather than Poland-Lithuania, since by 476 they'd left their homeland far behind.

Oh. Fair enough.

Either way, still up to you. I would advise the Vandals/White Huns.

Hmm. How do you feel about a survivng Aztec empire ? They mainly survived because Viking explorers, long with other Europeans, got blown waaaay of course, and introduced the various diseases of Europe to them early. Thus, they managed to develop antibodies to said diseases, and weren't wiped out when the spaniards came. They also killed Cortez, because the Emperor was way more paranoid, and had him and his men sacrificed early on.
