(Re:lay) Act II: The World at the End of the Universe

-Act II-
The World at the End of the Universe

Well, now. That was certainly a turn of events.

When we last left off, our young heroes' lives were flipped upside down. In more than one occasion, literally. What could have caused this? What possible reason could the world have given our so suddenly? And how did our heroes manage to escape?

...through a poorly-designed video game, no less. Surely the work of my Lord, who moves in mysterious ways. Perhaps Slime Blast Busters was more than met the eye....I shudder at the thought of it becoming prevalent, however.

Let us take you back to our main players, now. They have arrived through their portals on a mysterious Yellow landscape, the sky pale and the ground textured.

Let us turn the page, and begin once more.

Armageddon

One by one, the portals closed, and the Drawn left their universe.

On Earth, full panic had ensued. Massive chasms, hundreds of miles apart, had torn each country into halves, sometimes quarters. Lava bubbled and spewed from the depths below, earthquakes toppled cities, and tornadoes finished the job. The human population, desperate to flee, look for bunkers and isolated locations. But nowhere was safe.

Outside earth, the Moon slowly split in half, peeling down as if it were the rinds of an orange. The sun slowly rumbled and shrank, turning a sickly black. Millions of miles away, the gas giants faded. The core of the Milky way shrunk to the size of a penny, and suddenly expanded. In a matter of 13 minutes, the universe was gone, wiped off of the face of existence.

But we aren't in the universe.

A gentle breeze flitted through the heavy air of the Yellow Planet, but only for a moment. It gave Aiden Carthy, who just 5 minutes prior had seen his house be destroyed, a sensation of the landscape. The air, coming from.....some direction (no sun in the sky....why were they warm?) was stale, but had a hint of sourness, almost acidity. Near them was a small rocky cave, a ravine about 100 yards in the opposite direction, and a mountain rising up to its left. A sudden warping sound wrought the kids' attention, and the portals behind them closed with a swish.

"Holy shit....holy shit." Aiden mumbled, wringing his hands together in nervous energy. "Guys, I....I know Earth when I see it, and we are not on Earth." He reached out his hand, and helped Lola to the ground. He looked around in shock once more. Every guy. Every girl. All his friends...together.

Lola folded her arms, hugging herself tightly. Her cuts and scrapes stung in the breeze, but she didn't really care right now. "Is this real? You're all... here?"

She wasn't sure what to say or do. These things don't just happen every day. She could put a name and a handle to every face around her, but she'd never imagined she'd actually see them in person. It was... stupefying.

Jamie hadn't known what to expect, coming through the portal, but it sure as hell wasn't a sunless sky and yellow soil and every one of her friends. Mystified, she crouched down to touch the soil. It was grainy, like sand, but clumped easily, like dirt. She was intrigued, but very confused. Brushing it off her hands, she stood again and looked around.

"He's right, I've never seen anything like this, but I'm not sure I wanted to." Glancing around, she noted the cave. "Before we figure out what's going on, we need'a clean this up," she suggested, moving towards Lola. Her cuts weren't anything fatal, but they could get infected if they were exposed too long.

"You guys okay with that?"

"Yeah, this is real" Mori said, a degree of false hope eminating from his voice quickly fading, luckily Lola wasn't in too bad of a state, and was merely covered in cuts and bruises. Taking the intiative, Mori surveyed his surroundings - they seemed alien and mysterious; like a post apocalyptic world. Of course, he hoped they thought he was just an acquantaince who'd somehow ended up here, and not 'Whitehot_Stallion' which was actually a name he had been dared to use by his parents. He took a few steps, until he was standing a few metres from them, clothing, hair, bag and all.

Aiden looked up at the boy standing in front of him. He seemed awkward, nervous even. He looked down at his white shirt.

"Mori, can you tear off some strips of your shirt? We need to cover these scratches." He said promptly and plainly.

Mat finally decided to open his eyes to see what had happen to them.
He heard voices, by he wasn't sure if there were real or him imagining what his friends would sound like.
He his eyes to see his friends. He never thought that he would ever see them in his whole life unless his Sister would ever let him go to the west coast for the whole of summer.
At he saw Lola covered in cuts. He saw some of his friends laying on the ground, he saw some of them laying up. Some of them were wereing regular clothes and some looked like they just woke up.
He honestly couldn't think of anything to say so he just said what comes to mind.

"So looks like are home is gone. Lola, um someone have some bandages. What did the stone engravings say for you guys?"

Martin cradled his bass, checking each string for damage. He plucked them lightly.
He ran a hand along her neck. "They're a tad warm, but I think they're fine. Besides, I have a few spares somewhere in my gig bag."
"Anyway, hi. I'm guessing we won't be playing Unity as a group, then?" He ran a hand through his hair.
Mere moments earlier, everything had been fire and dea- Oh. The band were gone, as was Alphonso.
Fuck.
Nope, can't break down, there are people here.
Okay.
"So, how are we all?" He asked cautiously, putting the bass down gently on her gig bag.

Alex got up slowly, attempting to stay on his feet. A giant gash on his chest, put there by a shard of glass, was still bleeding a little, adding to the blood that was already there. Considering it was already torn and useless, Alex took off his shirt and started wiping up some of the blood. That's when he noticed a sword on the ground next to him. He picked it up and examined it, "Hey, look at this." he said to the group, "It's a sword. And it's got an VIII on the hilt."

Scratching his head, he quickly remembered the bleeding wound on his chest and called out to Jamie, "When you're done helping Lola, I could use some help over here."

"What... happened?" Taylor knelt on the ground, looking stupidly at nothing at all. "Where... are we? What happened? Is the world... gone?" Taylor stood, still avoiding looking at anyone. "Are we safe? If we're not on Earth, where are we?" The flood of questions were posed at no one. They were just to help Taylor grasp the situation. So far: no success.

Aiden stood, surveying his surroundings. "Doesn't look like anywhere I've been to....or even...I dunno, seen." Finally, he unslung the metal cylinder from its strap around his back. Now he surveyed it closer, the metal cool to the touch. It was lightweight, and had four metal weights facing in separate directions at the top. A small inscription was engraved into the hilt:

-XVI-

He gulped. There's that number again. "Hey, um, this.....um....thing, has the roman numeral 16 on it. Just like my portal....and the file..." he muttered. Looking around at his friends as the initial adrenaline wore off, he realized he'd never met most of them in person. He felt awkward, and shy. He decided to avoid making any serious decisions. He didn't know where he was, and he didn't want to jeopardize the group. He noted Alex saying almost the same thing.

"Um, why do these numbers keep popping up? Are we like...assigned them?" he asked.

"My... portal said -II- on it. And The Priestess." Taylor just noticed a sword lying on the ground. It beckoned to be picked up. Taylor gingerly grabbed the hilt. It wasn't as heavy as it looked. Engraved on the guard:

-II-

"I'm... number two. What's our highest number? And did anyone else have words with their portal, not just numbers?" It was getting easier to cope. Just ignore the alien parts. Focus on what's real. It will be fine. It will be fine.

Alex was still examining the sword when a thought came to him. He recalled the number was with the word 'strength' on the portal. He decided to keep quiet, until Taylor vocalized the same theory he had. He spoke up, "Mine said strength, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm the strongest one here. So maybe they are based on the attributes of each person."

Jamie shook her head as she tied up the last of Lola's bandages. "That doesn't make sense, though. Mine said 'Judgement.'" She stood up and pulled off the trumpet that hung from a leather strap overher shoulder. It was an ivory color, with intricate golden patterns. Along the mouthpiece, a roman numeral was engraved.

"I'm number twenty," she added.

"I'm the Lovers, huh? Well this is terrible" Mori said quietly, admiring his katana, which now featured the Roman Numerals VI on the hilt. He just hoped this was a horribly intricate and masterful practical joke, he was not a Lover, sure he was always friendlier to the females on chat but had never flirted with them. Still it was a surprising breath of fresh air for a change, seeing something so plainly ridiculous attributed to him, and him alone. He hoped no one else caught on, about his little attribute and what he was.

He could hope, of course it wouldn't be for long.

Leon heaved himself to his feet. That'd hurt in the morning.

If they got there.

They would. Hopefully.

He strode over to the others, long legs carrying him faster than normal. This was bizarre. Even for Leon, this was bizzare.

He stopped by Lola, plopping down next to her. "Hey", Leon said, quietly. This place felt like he should be quiet.

"Mine said "The Hanged Man", and number 12."

"I'm 'The Moon' aparantly" Cynthia said, moving towards the small group congregating around Lola. She was fairly dazed and confused. She then remembered she hadn't changed out of her night clothes. She looked down, blushing as she pulled her shirt down over her underwear and blushed.

"Hey... Do you guys think... The names... The numbers... What do you think they mean?"

Lucas had come out of his portal into the yellow world, and he looked around in awe. The feeling didn't last though as his mind slowly drifted back towards his family. He tried to shake those thoughts out of his head for the time being as he noticed everyone else forming a group.

He was shocked to see everyone in person now and started heading towards them as he noticed a little glint in the corner of his eye. A yellow spear was laying a few yards away from him, and it feel like it was pulling him closer. He picked it up and inspected it. He had never actually held a weapon like this in his hands before, but it felt like it belonged with him. It felt light and had some kind of warmth is was giving off. Near the tip of the spear the roman numerals XIX were engraved.

He approached the group of his friends, using his spear as a sort of walking stick. "I had The Sun on mine.. not exactly sure what to make of that."

Leon shook his head. "I dunno…… vegetables? Something with carrots? Beats me"

Then, as he shifted his hand, Leon felt something.

"OH MY GOD ALIEN SNAKE ATTACKING MY HAND AAAAAAA!"

And as the snake wound it's way around his wrist, Leon felt peaceful, and looked down at the creature that would end him……

And

He

Saw

…………

A rope. A long, tapering, metal-tipped bullwhip, engraved with the Roman Numerals for 12.

Lola raised an eyebrow at Aiden and laughed, too. "I think I feel about the same right now," she joked. She was surprised at how relaxed they were right now. They were on some unknown planet after Earth started having a global earthquake and they jumped through magic portals. Seriously, what the fuck.

After realizing that Leon's reaction was nothing but very melodramatic, she gazed around.

She noticed a leather pouch near where she had fallen through, now that she could really take things in. Lola reached over and dragged it towards her. "Wonder if this is my weird magically appearing thing," she mused before opening the pouch.

Inside lay an array of throwing knives and shurikens, with various shapes and sizes. With wide and confused eyes, she asked rhetorically, "What the fuck?"

Meanwhile, Jamie was using the Alex's partly bloodied shirt to gently pat away the blood. With a frown, she called to the group, "Does anyone have a scarf, or something to make a long strip of fabric? This needs wrapped too."

She had actually wanted to be a doctor when she got out of college, and had just received an early acceptance to med school with a full year's scholarship. With a sigh she thought, At least I have some basic knowledge of medicine.

Whatever happened is not your fault, and you did the best you could with the situation at hand.", Alex said in an genuine and encouraging way. Then he chuckled a little, "I was too busy getting the crap beat out of me by a couch to do anything."

Alex looked down at his torn up pants, and lack of a shirt, "So, does anybody have some clothes I could borrow?"

Looking at the sight ahead of him, Mori sighed and thought "meh, I'm more of a solo person" as he walked away from the rest of them and Jamie and Lola. This planet sure was strange, with the corn coloured rock and mustard coloured sand in some areas, it really wasn't going to win prizes for a holiday brochure. Also, the numerals on his katana were BS; he wasn't going to love any of these guys if his life depended on it, sure, remain friendly but keeping distance, at all costs. He just hoped the feeling was mutual.

Cynthia realised they all had weapons. Quickly checking her back, she noticed something there. Pulling it out and in front of her, she inspected what seemed to be a bow, but frozen somewhat. Her eyes widened, "The hell?"

Back to the matter of names. "The Sun, The Moon, The Tower, The Priestess... It sounds familiar..." She said out loud before turning to Lucas. "And your the sun, while I'm the moon..." She was processing information, still trying to wrap her head around the situation.

"I'm glad you didn't...well, you know, die. That would have been kinda upsetting." he laughed weakly.

"Don't be sorry, you we're all still alive thanks to you.

"I could also use some pants if anyone has some." Cynthia replied, pulling her shirt down again. Luckily she had worn a large shirt to cover her underwear if she needed to.
