Afghanistan - Afghanistan cannot be part of China, I assume.

But yeah, Guyane plus Amapa (or what Guyane got from Brazil), Greenland (that I had the idea with Boji for an Inuit-Norse civilization), and China (reduced) seems good, although China and Japan will still be very bitter, not buddy-buddy as it was prior to the death of this RP.

It makes Asia far more interesting of a place anyway. The whole "Asia is sunshine and rainbows" got kind of ridiculous.

Certainly, it would be more interesting to RP.

China would eventually become rich again, but probably like IRL China.

"Rich" as in overpopulated, underfed, totalitarian and whose economy relies entirely on economic bullying and inflating the economy? Japan would be in control of Asian markets and wouldn't let the Chinese yuan inflate/deflate at will as so to manipulate the markets.

Perhaps.

Though China may become a Republic, and grow rich, and be as well off as South Korea (or maybe be the Asian Brazil with high income inequality, with the rich living like the upper classes in the USA and the poor like the poorest African nation). There will definitely be a lot of emigration though to other nations as they seek a better life.

I think part of it is that I didn't really take anything that Britain didn't actually take...though I am now going to have to make some changes to make World War II feasible....I have to decide who's going to play the roles of Baldwin and Chamberlain...the inept, insular and ignorant PM who didn't care what happened and the alert, committed PM who made all the wrong decisions at the worst possible time.

Besides, Uni, there will be some differences. You and I will be launching a Cold War-style coup in South Africa in the 60s...which will fail but humiliate the Apartheid regime until its end.

Can Natal break away from South Africa and form a "free state" until the end of apartheid? Japanese farmers and labourers wouldn't approve of apartheid!

But that's nice! :D

I suppose with the 60s, there's the Indonesian War and the Mecca Massacre which South Africa could "support" or something.

I wonder how the Bush War will go, with Mozambique being Japanese...

China would probably be nowadays be economically developed. In the east, standards of living are like OTL Germany, but the further west you go, the poorer things get. There is massive income inequality, with the poorest people living like the poorest of the Africans IRL, while the richest probably live like American upper class.

Basically, Xinjiang is the poorest region of China, while the richest is Shanghai.

Is it okay if I use the plotlines of Madame Butterfly and Miss Saigon for a Confederate play?

I'm asking this as a general question to everyone because the novel Madame Chrysantheme about a Frenchman falling in love with a geisha was written by a Frenchman, the short story Madame Butterfly about an American falling in love with a geisha was written by someone who's a Canadian ATL, the play Madame Chrysantheme about a Frenchman falling in love with a geisha was written by a different Frenchman, a one-act play version of Madame Butterfly was written by an ATL Confederate, the more famous play Madama Butterfly was written by an Italian, and the play Miss Saigon was written by a Frenchman, a Sephardi Tunisian, and an ATL Canadian.

Could you elaborate in a telegram to me a bit about what you're going to do with both those plays, as one particularly is about Japan, and the other is about Vietnam?

Long story short, Miss Saigon is to Madame Butterfly what West Side Story is to Romeo and Juliet- very similar plots with a few differences, set in a different and more recent era. Madame Butterfly is itself based off a Madame Chrysantheme, where the foreign soldier is French instead of American.

I'm aware of the backstory. I guess, since none of it is really capable of commentary in the late 19th century of ATL Japan; I'm fine with it.

President of the Council of Ministers of the First Korean Empire (1919 - 1936)

1919 - 1924: Syngmann Rhee (Independent)
1924 - 1929: Kim Kyu-sik (National Liberal)
1929 - 1936: Kim Koo (Anti-Japanese Front)

* The First Korean Empire, which was established as a Japanese dominion, was dissolved on February 26, 1936 after Kim Koo, the reigning President of the Council, declared Korea in rebellion against Japan; Koo was a populist anti-Japanese leader elected by merit of being ahead of his numerous enemies in the polls. His regime came to an end after Hideki Tojo occupied Korea for 101 days.

Shogun of the Empire of Japan in the Korean Peninsula (1936)

1936: Hideki Tojo (Military)

* The Shogunate came to an end after 101 days when Kim Il-sung lead the Korean People's Army into Seoul, captured Tojo, and publicly executed him. Kim Il-sung declared the Korean People's Republic, yet affirmed the loyalty of Korea to Japan's leadership in the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere.

Chairman of the Supreme Presidium of the Korean People's Republic (1936 - 1950)

1936 - 1944: Kim Il-sung (Social Democratic)
1944 - 1949: Hwang Jang-yop (Social Democratic)
1949 - 1950: Franklin Dae-jun (National Union)

* The Korean People's Republic inaugurated the Japanese monarch once again as Emperor of Korea in 1950, after the election of the monarchist National Union party, under the leadership of Dae-jun Franklin, descendant of Benjamin Franklin.

President of the Council of Ministers of the Second Korean Empire (1950 - 1968

1950 - 1968: Franklin Dae-jun (National Union)

* Franklin Dae-jun was overthrown by an anti-Japanese warlord in 1968 after Kim Il-sung left Korea on a diplomatic trip to the Confederate States, thus neutralizing the threat of the KPA.

Supreme Commander of the Republic of Korea (1968-1969)

1968-1969: Yang Hyong-sop (Military)

* General Yang was overthrown by Kim Il-sung less than four months into his administration as Supreme Commander. His regime lasted from December 1968 to March 1969.

President of the Council of Ministers of the Third Korean Empire (1969 - 1980)

1969 - 1975: Kim Il-sung (Korean Workers Party)
1975 - 1980: Choi Kyu-hah (Korean Workers Party)

* The monarchy was suspended after the Rose Revolution; the Koreans restored the Japanese monarch in 1982.

Chairman of the Presidium of the Korean People's Republic (1980 - 1982)

1980 - 1982: Choi Kyu-hah (Korean Workers Party)

* The monarchy was suspended after the Rose Revolution; the Koreans restored the Japanese monarch in 1982.

President of the Council of Ministers of the Fourth Korean Empire (1982 - present day)

1982 - 1990: Choi Kyu-hah (Korean Workers Party)
1990 - 1994: Park Chung-hee (Democratic)
1994 - 2003: Kim Jong-il (KWP)
2003 - 2010: Roh Moo-hyun (National Federalist)
2010 - present: Lee Wan-koo (Democratic)

Quick note: the main criterion I'm looking at to see which RL American politicians are ATL Confederate politicians is whether the state they were born in is a Confederate state, not the state they became a famous politician in.

Good examples: Rick Santorum and Elizabeth Warren rose to prominence representing the states of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, but were born in Virginia and Oklahoma, and are thus listed as Confederate. There are presently two exceptions that I've made to this rule- Ted Cruz because he was born in Canada already and his parents wouldn't be fleeing Fidel because ATL Fidel is a baseball star, and Hillary Clinton because it would be a bit odd for the wife of a Confederate president to be a Canadian politician.

This does mean I've dropped my claims to the Kennedeys(Massachusetts), the Bushes(Connecticut, though Jeb was born in Texas so that might be something to discuss), and Obama(born in Hawaii).

On a largely unrelated note, congratulations, Unicario, if Japanese Long Island is still a thing, because you are now the proud ATL owner of Bernie Sanders(born in Brooklyn) and the not-so-proud owner of Donald Trump(born in Queens). May your politics be ever-interesting.

Oh, pity. I was hoping the first Japanese-born PM of Canada would belong to the NDP.

Are you sure you want to give up Obama? I was willing to let him stay yours; particularly considering his mother is still American; he'd just be a dual citizen.

"Anthems" of Japan
Official anthems are Furusato and Kimigayo

Kimigayo
Thousands of years of happy reign be thine;
Rule on, my lord, until what are pebbles now
By ages united to mighty rocks shall grow
Whose venerable sides the moss doth line.

Umi Yukaba
Written in the 1770s by Japanese soldiers fighting in the Korean Rebellion

Traditional (1776):
Umi yukaba
Mizuku kabane
Yama yukaba
Kusa musu kabane
Okimi no he ni koso shiname
Kaerimi wa seji

English (1891):
If I go away to the sea,
I shall be a corpse washed up.
If I go away to the mountain,
I shall be a corpse in the grass
But if I die for the Emperor,
It will not be a regret.

Furusato
Japanese folk song written in the mid-18th century under the rule of Empress Meiji
Usagi oishi kano yama,
kobuna tsurishi kano kawa,
yume wa ima mo megurite,
wasure-gataki furusato.

Ikani imasu chichi-haha,
tsutsuganashi ya tomogaki,
ame ni kaze ni tsuketemo,
omoiizuru furusato.

Kokorozashi o hatashite,
itsunohinika kaeran,
yama wa aoki furusato,
mizu wa kiyoki furusato.

My country 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing!

Land where my fathers died,
Land of the noblest pride,
From every ocean side, let freedom ring!

My native country three,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love!

I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills,
My heart with Rapture thrills, like that above...

Let music swell the breeze,
and ring from all the trees,
Sweet freedom's song!

Let mortal tongues awake,
Let all that breathe partake,
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.

Strong and peaceful, wise and brave,
Fighting the fight for the whole world to see
We the People, will ceaselessly strive
To keep our great federation alive.
Unfurl the banners, look at the sun,
Never before has such glory been seen.

East Asia, East Asia, East Asia, 'tis for thee...
