The New Modern World
OOC: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=304308

No matter where you stand politically - even if you're unsure of what your political ideology is - it is important to take part in the process of shaping our government.
-Brad Henry

What happened?

The Cold War is raging with the U.S.S.R and U.S.A going at it. With the loss of Vietnam to Communism, and deteriorating relations, what will happen in our new world? With new countries rising, and others falling. To the numerous coups, and different decisions that were made. It is up to you to chose what happened during these vital years, and how it shaped your nation. And yes, it is 1983.

Important Rules of the IC:

Timescale:
Every Page, equals three months in the IC. This is to keep the RP flowing, and provides for laws and such to be drafted and put into effect. You are REQUIRED, to date the MONTH AND YEAR of your actions, so we can keep track of time.

No IC Reservations:
Either post something for your country, or don't post at all. I don't want to have reservations all in the IC anymore.

Waging War:
Any conflict that is started must be waged reasonably and realistically. Also be aware of the terrain you are invading as that is a determining factor in battles. Troop mobilization on a nationwide scale takes time as well, at the very least two weeks for the most advanced nations just in the home region. And so, when you are about to invade and a page ends, you are to just postpone your invasion and say in the IC their were (Fuel shortages, increased preparation, ect), to make up for your loss. This also means the opposing team will not be able to see your units, until this time, if they are even spying on you. If you have any questions about this, let me know.

Post Quality:
All post will at least need to be two paragraphs long, with 8 sentences per paragraph minimum. If you do not meet this standard, do not apply. Here is some examples of post we like: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=293610&p=19831873#p19831873 which as you will see, it can be really long or the way the Afghanistan post is, either way both are accepted.

Technology:
Understanding the limitations of your nation's technology is important. There are limitations for most countries as they are not as advanced as the Russian's or Americans or any real nation at that power. If you would like to engage in research, you are free to start new projects, but be aware they make take a second to get done.

Random-Events:
Each month, I will have events that will either effect you, or do nothing to you, but they still give some spice to the RP. Note that a single page is 25 post, so make sure at like post 23, that you allow for me to post events each month, or I will be very upset with you.

Government House, Canberra,The Commonwealth of Australasia
January, 1983
12:00 PM

Governor-General Bill Hayden, and Prime Minister Paul Keating, sat in a room within the Government House, to discuss matters of upmost importance to Australasia. This meeting was mainly for economic purposes on the interior. Which he wanted to see a huge increase of. The Prime Minister spoke up first,

"Governor-General, I wish to introduce a new plan for our economy, that should bring big benefits for the nation. I call it, The Tropical Paradise Plan. I gave the name due to the fact we are more tropical then everything, but it will bear fruits". The Governor General was drinking his morning coffee, and was in a bathrobe as he sat listening to the Prime Minister. He knew the Australian Economy was growing and would continue to do so. He was weary of doing it to fast, but knew that to keep up in this world, we may have to rely on ourselfs one day. "What is included in this plan"?

The Prime Minister was looking at the bright sunny day in Canberra, which was not unusual at all, but it still looked amazing to see. "I believe we should hit on some high-points. These should be Energy, Prosperity, Progress, Environment, Interior, and Defense. These should be conducted in phases, and I have a draft of which I've been working on since the beginning of the year". A yellow envelope was given to the Governor-General which he opened slowly, and held it in his hands.

Image
The Tropical Paradise Plan
Phase One: Energy
Construction of 2 new hydroelectric dams with one on the Murray River, and the other on the Flinders River.
Construction of Light Water Nuclear Reactor, undisclosed location
Construction of 10 solar farms, in the Northern Territories.
Large refurbishment of the electric grid, to accommodate new power supply needs.
Further experimentation into larger, cleaner energy supplies.

Phase Two: Prosperity
Establishment of Civilian Conservation Corps, to provide labor jobs, for the unskilled, to help grow the state.
Introduction of efficient fertilizers and irrigation to agriculture
Extraction of Rare Earth Elements/Minerals
Mechanized overhaul of natural resource extraction
Construction of new Water Purification plants

Phase Three: Progress
Emphasis put into further rocketry and spacial science
Increase in Budget to the Department of Communications, for research and development of information technologies.
Have nation-wide networking and cellular coverage.
Establishment of the Australian Board of Information, to be placed under the Department of Communications, to accomplish these goals.
Research into Nuclear development, for deterrence, and peaceful purposes.

Phase Four: Environment
Establishment of the Australian Board of Tropicana, to oversee that during these changes, the state maintains it's natural beauty.
Investment into National Parks, and tourist attractions.
Encouraging cleaner industries, and businesses to move in, instead of dirty ones.
Introduction of the Sydney Protocol. Which is a new move to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Phase Five: Interior
Establishment of the Department of Homeland Security.
Encourage more students to strive for education, and build more universities.
Investment into better infrastructure, to benefit the country.
Establish a Strong State of self-reliance, smart populace, and effective security.

Phase Six: Defense
Increased emphasis into technological superiority
Research into drone technologies.
Continuation of, and increased resources put into, Missile technology, and satellites.
Development of the armaments industry, to suit the needs of Australasia's armed forces in terms of updated equipment.

The Governor-General looked up, "This plan is bold. Do you believe it will work"? The Prime Minister nodded, "With that, we will become the true paradise of Clean Technology, Intelligence People, and still keep our beaches unpolluted by toxic waste. Just give me the go, and I will put this infront of Parliament".

The Governor nodded, which was a go for the Prime Minister. And soon, the plan was announced.

The Federal Republic of India

Lahore, Federal Republic of India
For the first time in 14 years, Lahore was again declared the Cultural Capital of India, a great award to the people of Lahore, and an obvious attempt by the government to further reduce Muslim-Hindu tensions

Karachi, Columbo, Kerala, Calcutta, Mumbai, Rangoon; Federal Republic of India
As the 5 largest ports in India, the various cities would be awarded with an Aircraft Carrier named after them, it was expected that the 'Karachi' Class Carrier would be completed in 3 years. The divergence of federal funding to this project has caused media outlets to speculate that India is gearing up to take a more proactive role in the Indian Ocean. Many believe that this showcases the willingness of Prime Minister Gandhi to exercise her power in order to push projects that normally would require higher congressional debate. It's also expected to be a tactical move to gain more allegiance from these cities.
.

Punjab, Federal Republic of India
Congress has just finished yet another session. The Sikh delegations, including the President, were absolutely furious towards Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. With her execution of Operation Blue Star against Khalistani nationalists, it was expected that Sikh-Hindu tensions would increase, thus the Federal Government had announced a repatriation of all non-Indians in the Punjab province, something that the Sikh delegations had been calling for decades in order to reduce the violence, however that said the Khalistani nationalists continued to oppose the federal government, this move was made to drive a wedge between the Congress and Khalistan, hopefully preventing future incidents.

Aden Autonomous Territory, Federal Republic of India
Aden was considered a widely important area of India, due to its sheer diversity. As the 7th largest port in the Republic, and area with the highest number of Arabs, Somalis and Jews, Aden was seen as a beacon of peaceful diversity. Thus, no one had any opposition when the Federal Republic announced that a statue of Mahatma Gandhi would be erected. And when the announcement of Naval Bases on the islands of Perim, Khuriya Muriya and Kamaran was released, the event was widely overshadowed.

Communique from the Federal Republic of India, Addressed to The Commonwealth of Australasia, Indonesian Confederacy

Dear Leaders,
I write to you today to extend a hand of friendship. For decades our nations have stood as bulwarks against the forces of oppression and corruption, and today I'd like to solidify a hand to you, fellow Indian Ocean States, as The Federal Republic of India will be holding a Gala in Lahore to celebrate the cooperation of democratic Indian Ocean States. Following the Gala, delegates are welcome to come to the city of Rangoon, where the Eastern Monument will be erected, a twin to the statue in Karachi, this statue will show the cyclical cooperation displayed by democratic states in the Indian Ocean, I would like to again thank you and I await your reply. Should all go well, hopefully our states can discuss a greater degree of cooperation.

Sincerely,
Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of The Federal Republic of India

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
January 1983

London Harbour

The Technocratic Party enjoyed major support from the people because of the economic prosperity and social harmony it has created. However, it came at a cost. Political freedoms were oppressed and dissent stamped out. The fierce nationalism brought about as a result truly turned the United Kingdom into a tyranny by majority. Still, there were those that resisted. The mainstream way was through electing liberal members to the House of Commons. Always the minority, these members could effect little change and grew smaller after each election. It did not matter either way, as Parliament was divested of much of its power over the years as the High Ministry, synonymous with the Technocratic Party, consolidated power. The other way of resisting was through acts of dissent. Public disobedience was the most prevalent method, but a more direct and visible method was acts of terror. That was why a group of dissenters had gathered here today at an abandoned warehouse.

One terrorist grabbed a rifle from the crate in the center of the barren room and slammed an ammunition cartridge in.

"Alright chaps, there's no going back now. We do it just as planned. Riley and Derrick will leave first in the van while the rest of us take the bus. The Miniinfo should be chalk full by this time, we'll be able to bleed it dry. Once the primary bomb goes off, it's go time, leave none alive. Life, Liberty and Freedom!"

The rest of the group echoed the final words of their leader, and began loading unmarked crates into the vehicles. Today, they would make history and be remembered as martyrs as long as there were free men or women in the United Kingdom.

Just Outside London Harbour

A group of heavily armed officers from the Ministry of Welfare and Public Safety (MWPS) staged just outside the Harbour District. Intelligence reported that a terrorist cell was planning an attack on the Ministry of Information and today the cell would be gathered together in one place as they commenced their act of terror. The officers mounted up into their armoured vehicles and headed to the location. A brief, but fierce firefight ensued. The evening news reported that the MWPS had successfully broken up an immigration ring, and that those detained were being deported to their home countries.

The Kingdom of Bulgaria
The House of Parliament
Tsar Simeon II's weekly National Defense meeting

January, 1983
9:00 am

The room was quiet as everyone sat in anticipation, the Tsar was yet to arrive and he was later than normal. The Tsar had tasked the Defense Committee two months ago to find ways to deter attacks from the Soviets and the Romanians. Everyone stood as the door at the end of the spacious and elegant room opened to reveal the Tsar. Eyes followed him to his chair as he made eye contact with no one. Before sitting down, he spoke. " I have much on my plate today, will the Defense Committee present their plan regarding measures being taken to deter the enemies of this nation." At these words, everyone sat down and looked expectantly towards the front of the room where the Defense Chief stood ready to present.

The Defense Chief cleared his throat before speaking," Your Majesty, the committee has come to a decision after days of exploring every avenue and every option available to us. It was only a couple of hours ago that we agreed together on a decision." As he finished this sentence, the anticipation was evident." Your Majesty, we advocate the use aircraft carriers to form a battle group in the Black Sea to deter the socialist republics. At the beginning of our discussions, we inquired about the building of a carrier to various domestic arms manufacturing companies to guage the cost of building the carriers and how long it would take."

"Let me stop you right there." All of the heads in the room turned to the Chairman of the Parliament Defense Procurement Committee," The Committee also inquired not too long ago about the cost of carriers and potential upkeep, we were told that we simply did not have enough capital to support even one." All heads turned back to the Defense Chief as everyone in the whole room awaited a response.

"You are right Chairman, four or five years ago we would not have been able to support a carrier. But we are no longer in the position we were then, our economy is in much better shape and our analysts agree that it is possible to support one Gabrovski-class carrier. The cost is expected to be around 2.6 billion Lev (adjusted for inflation and how much the Bulgarian currency is worth at the time), upkeep is expected to be around 200 million Lev per year." The faces around the room were impressed yet wary, it would be large undertaking, and no doubt it would cause unneeded attention. The Tsar leaned back in his chair," Do it." A collective sigh could be heard around the room, another problem solved, another victory for the Bulgarian government.

The Indonesian Confederacy

Jakarta, Indonesian Confederacy

January, 1983

President Ade Halim sits in his newly refurbished office, reading Robinson Crusoe when he receives a call from his secretary downstairs. "President Halim?"
"Yes, what do you want, I'm reading Robi...a very important report.
"Sorry sir, but we have an important message from India"
"Fine bring it up" His secretary soon brings the message. Halim grabs it and reads it silently, he begins to think of the opportunities that could come with an alliance and free trade with India. He begins to write a message to Indira Gandhi, hoping to achieve great things with this nation. Ade Halim the thinks of the USA and the Commonwealth of Australasia, good relations with them would surely benefit his nation

To: Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of India
From: Ade Halim, President of the Indonesian Confederacy

Dear Indira Gandhi,
I would be honored to attend this Gala in Lahore, I have heard many great things of the accomplishments of your nation and will gladly attend. After the Gala, I will go myself to Rangoon and witness the momentous occasion of the Eastern Monument standing tall in the beauty of the Indian sun. Afterwards I hope we can go into negotiations between our nations and improve our diplomatic ties through an alliance and free trade.
Sincerely, Ade Halim

With the message completed, Ade Halim considered how beneficial it would be to create an alliance with the Australasians and Americans

To: Prime Minister Paul Keating of the Commonwealth of Australasia
From: President Ade Halim of the Indonesian Confederacy

Dear Paul Keating,
As a neighboring nation, I gladly extend my hand out in friendship to our Oceanic brothers in the South. We propose an alliance and free trade between our nations to maximize national security. If we were to ally, then the two of our navies combined would greatly defend our national waters and prevent any kind of amphibious invasion from the "Red Plague". I also would like to point out that my nation has some very valuable resources that I believe you will agree with
Sincerely, Ade Halim

To: President Ronald Reagan of the United States of America
From: President Ade Halim of the Indonesian Confederacy

Dear Ronald Reagan,
I believe you and I share the same concern about the Communist threat in the East and I believe if you had more allies in the East, you'd feel a bit safer. I propose an alliance, free trade, and help from the great engineers from the United States. This alliance will repel any threat of the Chinese and Russia installing Communism unto my nation. The trade Agreement will ensure you continuously get a stream of oil if oil from the Middle East becomes hard to come by for political reasons. And the in exchange for a United States Naval base on the island of Java, we would like your help in constructing Nuclear facilities in our nation to greatly improve our production
Sincerely, Ade Halim

Singapore, Indonesian Confederacy

The construction of an Aircraft Carrier in Singapore has begun in the recent weeks and is scheduled to finish in 3 years time. Being named the ICF Singapore, it is the first carrier being built by the Indonesians. "With this carrier" Says President Halim "We'll be more active in protecting our waters and territories, after all we are an island nation, if we didn't have a grand fleet then whta kind of group of islands would we be?"

January 18th 1983

Armed Guards stood watch everywhere ID cards were checked and double checked by both security and members of the military. The symbol of Esquipulas Oficina de Diseño aeroespacial, or more commonly referred to as EODA stylised together as a mountain peak wreathed in clouds was almost as prominent on personnel and the facilities as the Hammer and Torch, the no nonsense design of the buildings which were whitewashed and sturdy.

The facility itself was a fair sprawl, a mix of hangars laboratories and offices, in some cases all three and more, in the distance a distant throbbing could be heard as an aircraft began taxing for take-off from one of the facilities runways. A small group could be sighted at one of the hangars near that runway, a scientist leading two men, one a great slab of a mountain and another who seemed almost cadaverous in comparison and flanked by guards through the security at the entrance.

No sooner were the group through the door and in the inspection area than a great bellowing could be heard, a sound much akin to that of a wounded elephant, one fluent in Spanish evidently, the security guards seemed very much used to the unholy racket had a small double take before they swiftly checked ID and began checks and searches being none too discreet about checking everywhere both physically and with various hand held detectors before finally waving them through an archway. “Let me guess, Lab three again?” enquired the mountain resignedly while his more normal proportioned colleague grinned at the situation.

One of the guards gave a tired nod as he tapped away on the keyboard in front of him checking the results of the body scanners against the norms, “they’ve been going at it now for over two hours, Might I ask sir that before the new labs are finished that each room is sound-proofed, if not for our sake then to make sure that discussions like that stay in there, as is I could probably brief you myself on the new designs, if I knew the meanings of half the technical jargon,” he finished wearily before tapping a few more times again before making his way over to a palm scanner pressing his hand against it and swiping his card through an adjacent scanner several times in different ways. “You can go in sir, you already know what the score is so I won’t repeat what you already know.” The guard shifted his gaze to Fernandez almost sheepishly before continuing, “and Chairman, don’t think too hardly of them, they may seem like lunatics but they are very good at what they do,”

“Those two never give it a rest, but they get the job done, I’ll go deal with the children, in the meantime I want a level three security sweep of the facility carried out immediately, and new authorisations and attending passwords and such issued, completely check the personnel lists and re-vet everyone, this comes direct from the top.” Returned the great slab with a sideways glance at the Chairman who once again grinned broadly before gesturing for him to precede him through the security door. Guards too stood at attention on the other side, perhaps a bit too attentively as they practically quivered with pride as they escorted the group through a veritable rabbit’s warren of corridors with every cross section also host to its own security. The thunderous almost agonizing bellows echoing almost painfully through the corrugated halls and to make matters worse it was getting louder and more and more clear from the vaguely muffled trumpeting of before.

“I’m telling you that unless we put Canards on we’re limiting the potential of the design!” Manuel howled waving a pair of plastic triangles at his colleague dramatically as if to illustrate his point, a handful of the design team looked up the rest merely continued their work. By now more than used to the two preening and posturing, more than a few appeared to be keeping score of sort absent mindedly while continuing on with their own work. Several appeared to be completely unfazed by what by now was a common spectacle as they held up mock aircraft turning them round in their hands making measurements and working out formulae, of course how they managed to concentrate with a noise that would have made a metal concert sound like subdued background music was anybody’s guess.

“And I keep telling you Jose, not every aircraft needs canards!” thundered Leon slamming his fist down on the desk, an action everyone else swiftly regretted as the impact sent a pillar of paperwork, a stack of folders and several mock ups hurtling in every direction helped in no small part in this by the air conditioning. A whirlwind of paper began fluttering everywhere causing the other designers to resignedly cease their work to clear up the latest mess, with two of the younger ones diving frantically to try and field the flying aircraft models.

It was perhaps no small surprise that nobody noticed the door at the bottom of the lab slide open revealing the somewhat unusual scene of two grown man waving parts of model aircraft at each other while sheaf’s of paper whirled around them. Design team members running round frantically trying to catch stray files and a pair of technicians collapsed upon each other, both with the aircraft they had attempted to catch now lying upon their backs and heads. A bomb could likely have detonated with less disorder and certainly less racket yet despite the absurdity of the situation and the frantic actions most of those in the room seemed to take it in their stride. To compound things even more agonized bellows could be heard echoing from elsewhere in the building reverberating horribly through the air conditioning.

“And what have you two lunatics done this time? We haven’t the time to play games like this,” the voice was soft at complete contrast with the sheer bull of a man who had padded his way in through a door into the vast room. “Can’t you two agree on anything? If you two didn’t work so well together and weren’t so good at what you do, I’d have separated you years ago!” his mouth twitched at the corners as he folded his arms across his barrel chest.

“And spared me such a spectacle? You will do nothing of the sort! Jose and Manuel, two of EODA’s foremost and may I add eccentric designers, your exploits are legendary in the congress so far the tales of your foibles seem wholly accurate so I look forward to seeing what this unrestrained chaos has spawned, please tell me, or even better yet show me what you have been working on,” The Chairman interjected chidingly, Fernandez supressing yet another grin in favour of a slight smile and a wary look at the pair who appeared to have encountered a gorgon and were frozen still faces in mask of surprise and horror all the while still brandishing parts at the other.

The two continued to remain statuesque for no small amount of time caused Fernandez to look about the room to see if Time was indeed still in motion, as certainly everyone else had stopped in wary anticipation of the spectacle unfolding before them. The tension continued to increase as Fernandez took several steps forward poking each of them on the forehead as if expecting to hear a hollow sound before turning round to the small giant, “Is this normal?” he enquired simply tilting his head slightly and shrugging his shoulders slightly, the high white collar of his shirt rising and falling with the movement.

Wake up you qualified lunatics and brief the chairman he didn’t come all the way from Karatá to watch you two act like US Cartoon Characters! Thundered the monumental man who slammed his own arm down upon a desk causing it to collapse under the titanic impact sending even more paperwork and models flying, again

“Well I can see the local equipment Commune’s doing quite well out of today,” Fernandez commented dryly that grin now almost securely fixed on his face again as he patted the rolled up cuff’s of his shirt above his elbows his head swaying backwards as he laughed. The

Seeing the Chairman, Fernandez, laugh at the whole situation appeared to break the spell upon the room as the two frozen in the middle of the insane Tableau appeared to wake up moving stiffly and judderingly to face less each other and more the chairman placing their implements, or rather parts on nearby tables. Each eyed the other up as if silently arguing as to who would begin, as it preparing themselves each made their way to their desks to grasp models.

“Well, Sir, we were having some disagreements as I think you could see, we have almost two distinct concepts and ideas, Manuel favours an extremely advanced high performance design while,” explained Jose, stuttering slightly his voice now at a considerably more normal volume as he restacked the scattered documents in smaller less precarious piles avoiding the tired resignation tinged with amusement on the faces of some of his colleagues.

“while Jose,” interrupted the other man, who had busied himself with clearing more space for the now abbreviated piles and moving two mock aircraft almost reverently out of the way, “favours a more experimental design, just as advanced but lesser performance however his design calls for untested ideas in radar stealth,”

“So basically you two have separate designs which you could submit?” returned that same soft tone of the immensity, his hazel eyes drifting around the design area eying up the various mock-ups from both past and current projects before returning his amused gaze to the designers. He winced slightly as he cast his gaze to the Chairman who maintained a very strong line of sangfroid and showed little else except great amusement.

“I’d wager that they are well past the design stage given what you have in your hands,” Fernandez finally uttered folding his arms across his chest, he cut an altogether casual figure wearing a long sleeved white undershirt and a simply brown shirt with the sleeves folded to above the elbow a Centroamerican Cog, Hammer and Torch pin on each lapel and his short sandy hair styled vertically.

"Well, Sir, yes, we were discussing how to merge the two together into a single design and incorporate them without diminishing either designs strengths,” motioned Jose cautiously to both his own model and that of Manuel, “Both have their advantages and also dare I say it some weaknesses, though it is somewhat difficult to call them that, when it is more a difference of application and convention.”

Indeed, not to mention of course the technical and economic aspects, both call for an expansion of the facilities of EODA in order to produce and develop the designs and their successors, this installation while adequate at present will not continue to be so.” Manuel paused tentatively looking to his colleagues for encouragement, who by now looked decidedly more anxious, “We’re seeing an increase in skilled personnel at every level right now some of the technicians here could be leading their own teams, however we simply don’t have space for such teams, this one design lab is hosting the efforts of five separate teams.”

“and while I may point out this approach does have its advantages as you may have noticed we have quite a lot of ideas and passion for those ideas however that in itself can disrupt the efforts of other teams,” here Jose paused allowing the roaring through the ventilation from elsewhere to punctuate his remarks.

“I shall authorise what I can, but talk me through these designs, you’ve piqued my interest,” Fernandez was intently eying up both models tapping his fingertips against each other his intent gaze fixed almost entirely upon the tiny creations.

“Well, my design what we have dubbed the Alotl, is a stealth fighter, it is superior in all elements to the Quetzal Three, now what I mean by Stealth is that it in some cases is impossible to detect while in other elements it is extremely difficult to find using more exotic methods. It is however more expensive and complex than Manuel’s design, in addition it is also a considerably different beast as it were in terms of pilot skill, these however I believe in time can be minimized with further development.” Jose had handed his model to Fernandez who turned it around almost reverently eying up every detail as Jose talked him through it before handing it back and turning to Manuel.

“I however have created a more conventional design, the Quetzal Four, it is however extremely high performance, exceeding that of the Alotl however the margin is not by a great amount, it is however less prone to loss of control and provides for somewhat greater flexibility. In addition the design shares some commonality with the Coatl which we both previously assisted on in its early stages.” Likewise Manuel did the same Fernandez smile becoming broader with every explanation before he again handed this one back.

“Most interesting, I believe, based on what Defence Commissariat Juanita has been explaining to me, that we could see both designs employed, with the Quetzal four utilised in a more generalist role, while the Alotl could be used more as a strike fighter and in interception,” Fernandez cast his gaze around the dissipating chaos as during the explanations the technicians, designers and scientists had begun to sort through the mess.

"Chairman Fernandez, I hate to pressure you but we have more to show you here,” interjected that massive man his expression laden with resignation at what to him was a frequent occurrence and hardly a spectacle. While hardly typical of the Centroamerican design community most of them had a variety of eccentricities that made his life if not tiresome than at times humorously difficult and sometimes gratingly so.

“Fear not Alfonse, I remember the Itinerary you gave me and it appeared most interesting, I especially look forward to seeing the progress of the Trabajadores-class carriers at Krukira, Design Leads, Manuel and Jose it has been a pleasure,” He inclined his head politely to the pair and to the rest of those seeking to bring order to chaos in the room, with this he made his way out of the room as a guard opened the door for Chairman Fernandez and Alfonse the Mountain.

Deutsche Demokratische Republik
January 1st, 1983

East Berlin

All of the city was alive with celebration and glee, cheering could be heard in every home, drunken revelers slurred joyful tunes on the streets, every citizen was anticipating the New Year. At the Palast der Republik, the seat of the Volkskammer, the cheerful mood was also prevalent as various politicians waited for the speech of Chairman Kraas under the delicate lights of the Foyer, and over fine glasses of champagne.

A round of applause echoed off the marble floor and columns of the Foyer as the Chairman, clad in a suit and tie and flanked by two guards, walked upon the balcony and greeted the politicians below. Kraas cleared his throat and began to address the attendees as a video camera reeled up to record him and broadcast it to the public.

"Gentlemen of the Volkskammer and Staatsrat, today marks the beginning of a new year. Our nation has thrived for the past thirty four years, each year further prosperity reaching the people, each year our bonds of proletarian and German brotherhood are further strengthened, but, also, each year we face further challenges from the enemies of the people. Capitalists, imperialists, such rabble has taken control of our brethren in the West, our fellow Germans, they have taken control of Britain and Bulgaria, oppressing the masses under an iron fist! Let this year be a year where all Germans work, fight, and innovate against the great menace that threatens true equality and freedom of the world, let 1983 be a year where the Republic, and all our communistic allies, are stronger than ever before!"

The clapping and cheering in response to the speech could be heard throughout the city in bars and in apartments, Kraas bowed, and returned to his quarters. He found various requests from military and intelligence agencies waiting for him to sign.

Passed Measures

From Markus Wolf, Head of the Hauptverwaltung Aufklärung
Our contacts in Madagascar have reported an armed organization taking prevalence in rural parts of the island. It may be rumor at best, but reports state there are a large number of militiamen, possibly in the thousands, most surprisingly not even native Madagascans or of African origin. This is a peculiar opportunity, if we are able to discover if their motives align with ours, we may have Southwest Africa in Comintern hands. With all this said, I request that you approve an agent to be sent into the hinterland to establish contact.
[APPROVED]

From Wilhelm Ehm, Admiral of the Volksmarine
The situation with our Navy is simply troubling. Our coastline is defenseless against enemies of the State without Russian assistance, if we cannot hold our own we will remain forever vulnerable to Nordic and British naval breaches, and will be unable to conduct valuable naval operations in times of war. Therefore, I request that the navy be expanded, with the addition of one Sovremenny-class destroyer, three Krivak-class frigates, and five Tarantul-class corvettes, all constructed at our shipyard in Rostock.
[APPROVED]

From Christoph Friedel, Head of the People's Board for Nuclear Energy
It is in the interest of Germany to find cheaper and alternative forms of energy, so that all people may have access to low cost electricity. Nuclear power presents a cost-effective alternative to traditional coal, and paves a pathway to possible nuclear defense mechanisms. So, I humbly request you approve funding and construction for a nuclear power facility in Greifswald.

Commonwealth of Ontario and Boreal Columbia

Image

1st January, 1983

Parliament House, New Columbia

Prime Minister Alexander Lee stood outside the main steps leading up to Parliament House, steps barely 30 years old, after the old Parliament had been torn down, and this building behind him built on it's site. This project helped promote the idea of a New Canada, with a new government, with it's citizens as Ontarians, not English or French. The efforts worked - over the 10 years after the revolution, by the time the next national census took place, in 1965, where the number of people identifying themselves as English or French halved, and this amount was seemingly directly added onto those identifying themselves as Ontarians.

The Prime Minister stood before the crowds, who were waiting to hear his speech after being elected into office. "Good morning all. I firstly want to thank each and every one of you here today for giving me this chance, this chance to change Ontario - for the better. Less than 12 hours after the election results being announced, and I already have come up with ideas of how to implement the promises I made - the promises I will keep. I hope you will support me throughout my term in office, as I will support you. I hope that each and every one of you will feel content and happy about the way I ran the country, once my time as Prime Minister is up. I thank you again for this chance to change Ontario for the better." He grinned, glancing down at his notes as the crowds cheered and applauded his speech.

He turned to his right, watching as Governor-General Charles Osborne walked down the steps out of Parliament House towards the podium. He stood in front of the new Prime Minister, and put his right hand on the podium, while raising his left hand. The Prime Minister did the same, his right hand raised and his left on the podium.
"Alexander Lee, do you promise to serve the Commonwealth of Ontario and Boreal Columbia for as long as your time in office?" Said the Governor-General, the start
"I do." Replied Alexander Lee.
"Do you promise to uphold each and every one of the points detailed in the Ontarian and Boreal Columbian Constitution of 1960?"
"I do."
"Do you promise to do everything in your power to up hold the rights of your citizens and obey international law?"
"I do."
"Then I, Governor-General Charles Osborne, by the power vested in me by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, do hereby proclaim you the 9th Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Ontario and Boreal Columbia. Congratulations." The crowds cheered and clapped as the two men shook hands and the new Prime Minister waved and walked off the stage, and up the stairs towards Parliament House. The cheering faded behind him as the he entered through the open door.

5th January, 1983

Parliament House, New Columbia

The Prime Minister was sat in his office in Parliament House. He was writing up a new bill - his first to be shown to Parliament as Prime Minister. After hearing about the one Australasia passed last month, he had been inspired to write up one of his own. It detailed the use of alternative power generation methods to using fossil fuels. Nuclear Power was a viable alternative for the country, as Ontario already produced around a third of the world's Uranium. After a gradual decline in uranium mining in Ontario and nuclear power worldwide since the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, the Prime Minister new it would take some convincing to persuade the public of the benefits of nuclear power. So far, the Prime Minister had come up with this:

Image

Nuclear Power Act

Safety and Control
The main priority of nuclear power is safety, and preventing another disaster. As such, the Ontarian Board of Nuclear Safety (OBNS) shall be set up, replacing all other departments and organisations of it's type. It will handle issues and responsibilities concerning the safe running of the plants, such as regular inspections and handling incidents threatening the safe operation of the plant. Safety shall meet international standards, as well as making sure that any plant is not built upwind of any and all major urban areas, to make sure that the risk of contamination entering the air flow of towns and cities is as low as possible, if a disaster similar to Chernobyl was to occur in an Ontarian plant.

Mining Uranium
The mining of Uranium as fuel for the plants shall be subsidised by the state, with the funding coming from the appropriate departments within the government. This shall also be good for reducing unemployment among the unskilled population. The sites subsidized will be determined by the state after samples of the material extracted there are taken and measured accordingly.

Construction of Power Plants
The construction of the power plants will be subsidised by the government, along with tax cuts for nuclear energy companies in Ontario. But, the sites for the plants shall have to be authorised by the state, in order to ensure that they are not close enough to, nor upwind of any urban areas for radiation to affect the population.

The Act looked good, good enough to put before the House of Representatives. The bill was put before Parliament the next day, and was voted into effect after a long-drawn out debate in which those opposed kept on using Chernobyl as a reason not to allow it, but with no other real reason. The Act was then sent off to the Governor-General for sign-off and ratification.

Three knocks on the door, then he would open, as was the tradition. Knock, knock, knock as his fist fell three times against the oak doars before he pushed down the handle and pushed open the door, finding the Prime Minister busy in a conversation with a man that he did not immediately recognise.
"Oh, I'm sorry Your Excellency, I thought that the Riksminister was free. Shall I return at another time later?" He asked as the man that sat opposed to the Prime Minister turned to face the newcomer. Now he recognised the man.

"Not at all. Professor Anderberg was just about to leave, isn't that right?" The Prime Minister asked, standing up from his chair and the professor following suit.
"I would still ask that Your Excellency thinks about the importance of my work, see through the costs of it, and see the benefits." The professor stated as he was led out of the room by the Prime Minister.

"I know the importance of the Professors work, and it is not that. It's just that it is no longer needed. The Professor can't expect the state to pay 25 million crowns for what was it now, 31 sterilisations every year? Besides if need be that will be covered by the other departments. But I thank the Professor for his time, farewell." The Prime Minister then led him out of the room, and inviting the other man into the room.

"Farewell, Your Excellency." The Professor stated as he walked away with firm steps. The two men that remained then went back into the office and closed the door.
"Was that?" The newcomer only got as far before being interrupted by the Prime Minister.
"Yes, Professor Vilhelm Anderberg. Headmaster for the Institute of Ethnical Studies at Uppsala University." The Prime Minister made sure that the newcomer was seated before he went to his liquor cabinet.
"Anything for you, Mr. Foreign Minister?" The Prime Minister said jokingly, stating his title in English.

"Oh just a cognac, Gustaf, if you still have some." He replied, looking around in the large room that he had almost spent as much time as he had in his own office. However he was very rarely in his own office either.
"I most certainly do Jan, the usual I assume." The Prime Minister then proceeded to pour up two glasses of cognac.
"But surely Anderberg can't expect that his research is to continue with such low results? And especially at such high costs. Thank you." The Foreign Minister said as he was presented with the glass of cognac.

"Oh, I am sure he can. Although he must realise that it is not feasible in these hard times, also they don't do anything. And it is quite unpopular amongst the people too. No, we'll have to close it down. And if there are any sterilisations based on "ethnic reason" then it can be handled by the main department. Skål." Gustaf raised his glass in a toast to the man sitting opposing to him.

"Now, I suppose there was some other reason that you called me here." The Foreign Minister quickly responded after the toast.
"Yes, indeed. I deem it would be good to open more diplomatic connections, with Britain and East Germany, So I'd suggest to just send a message to the two nations, and see what we can gather." Gustaf took another sip of his cognac.
"I will do so. Anything else?" He answered as he finished the last of his cognac.

"No, don't think so. Oh, wait, now. Do you think you and your wife are busy tonight?" The Prime Minister asked as he rose from his chair.
"No, not at all. I think we are free tonight." He answered as he rose from his chair and the two men walked towards the exit.
"Wonderful, then you and Mrs. Eliasson are welcome to Sagerska later this evening, say six, and we'll have a nice evening. Farewell."

Deep inside the Kremlin,Moscow,Russian SFSR
10:21 AM

Last night was new year.Red Square was filled with fireworks, people were out at the streets.Well, under Chernenko, things were more easy.Beside the Red Square, there is Kremlin,a Red-Walled fortress like compound.Chernenko was an old man,yet calm and brave. He walked through the offices of the Kremlin, with every person he met greeting him "Good Morning Comrade General Secretary".He was walking for the meeting room, today's meeting agenda was about the non-VTOL aircraft carrier,an improved Minsk Class.Chernenko kept on walking, and walking until he sees the room,he knocked then pulled down the handle bar as he opens the wooden door with a little translucent rectangle window on it.Everyone on the room stood up as he enters and greets him a good morning.Inside there was Admiral Yuri Padorin,Vice Defence Minister Kiril Sibiryakov and Chernenko's Advisor Mikhail Shevchenko.
Good Morning to all of you. Chernenko said as he sips his tea and sits down on the chair.I expected you all know why are we here for,so we shall begin now. The three high ranks nod at the same time.Admiral Padorin who was the supervisor of the "Improvised Minsk Class" project broke the ice,he said Comrade General Secretary, the project has undergone massive success,we are just a few weeks away until it is finalized.
Chernenko replied Very well, but with this underway,Ulyanovsk is stopped, yes? And does Washington''s CIA know about our improvised Minsk?
Admiral Padorin sighed a bit before he replies Chernenko back Indeed Ulyanovsk has been stopped, with this latest Minsk almost finished we expected that Ulyanovsk production will be hold for a few months. And yes,i believe Reagan's spies has already know about this as expected on the beginning of the production.
Lastly Chernenko replied Alright that is about it,you three may resume normal work, good day.As the three of them bid farewell to Chernenko, they all left the meeting room, resuming their normal work at the office.

Government House, Canberra,The Commonwealth of Australasia
January, 1983
12:00 PM

Governor-General Bill Hayden, and Prime Minister Paul Keating, sat in a room within the Government House, to discuss bill which was put on the floor. The Prime Minister reports that it had passed, with a 80% approval rating. Now all that was left to discuss is what should we begin first. "I think sir, we should continue the phases already outlined, and not skip around, as we need one thing, to make the other work". The Governor-General was weary, as he believed the Civilian Conservation Corps, should be made now, even though it was in Phase Two, and allow them to work on Phase One.

"What if we make the Civilian Conservation Corp now, and allow them to help with our electrical needs? I believe it would make the planned construction projects go faster, and allow for higher approval ratings". The Prime Minister nodded, "Well sir, I certainly get your reasoning, but I belive following the original layout would be more on the budget. Opening up the Civilian Conservation Corp, without actually building the purification plants, or mining, we won't have enough money to support the plan, causing it to be a failure. We need to focus on the construction force we have now, which calls for Energy. Our construction of 2 new hydroelectric dams with one on the Murray River, and the other on the Flinders River, have been put into action three days ago. According to reports, they should take a Year and a Half to complete, depending on the weather".

The Governor General nodded, as he turned his attention further down the plans, "What about the Light Water Nuclear Reactor? Is this already in the making"? The prime minister responded, "Yes, we have been discussing on places to build it. I believe it should be built a little outside of Sydney. Not only with it be a massive power house, but it will also be symobolic. Our Solar Farms were put in the same day we put the dams down, we should have 6 of them by the end of this year, and the other 4 in May of 1984. Phase One should be completed by the end of 1984, then we can move to Phase Two".

The men smiled, as although Phase One was needed, they couldn't wait to get to Phase Two. "Do it, I want the projects to be done when they can. Australasia will be known as the "Beacon of Prosperity", as we will turn the Desert, into a Paradise". With this, the Prime Minister Left.

Minor Actions
Refurbishment of the electric grid already in place, to route the power to the new buildings.
Research into Cleaner Energy Supplies has been announced, and planned.
The Parliament has Allocated 100 Billion Dollars for the first part of the plan.
Message sent to the Federal Republic of India, agreeing to attend in Rangoon.
Message sent to The Indonesian Confederacy, asking to meet in either Australasia or Indonesia to discuss the terms of the deal.

BEIJING, People's Republic of China
January, 1983

Comrade Chairman Deng Xiaoping reportedly met with the Eight Elders earlier this afternoon in a conference to discuss the state of national healthcare in the People's Republic. Research was to be done in order to propel Beijing into the future, hopefully to be able to successfully provide not only for the Workers of the People's Republic, but across the globe, in the name of the perpetual People's Revolution.

Early reports are also suggesting Chinese that officials have been sent to both Cambodia and Vietnam in high hopes of building a bridge of regional harmony throughout Southeast Asia. Investments have been made in our Socialist regional allied states in the form of agricultural, educational, and national security measures support platforms presented by the dear Comrades of the CCP. Several regional state administrators have also been sent diplomatic communiques, seeking an expansion of improved Chinese multilateral development.
I'm here.

North Norwegian Sea, HMS Halland, Bridge
1983/01/12 17:00

Image

The HMS Halland was an old ship, one of the oldest in the Nordic navy, and Hans Sörensson would be it's last captain, and it would be his last ship. The Commander was in his mid sixties with greying hair, however his physique and uniform made him look at least 10 years younger, or so he thought at least. It was no particularly large ship either that he commanded, the destroyer weighed some 3000 tonnes and had a crew consisting of around 250 men, but it still patrolled the seas of the North Norwegian Sea, watching for both Soviet and NATO ships, although everyone knew that the Soviet ships were the main targets here.

HMS Halland had quite a few experiences with the Soviet navy, as it had been used to hunt for Soviet submarines in the archipelago in the early 80's, to no success however. Some may say that there were no submarines there even, but Commander Sörensson was not one of them. He was completely sure that the Soviets were often and knowingly intruding on Nordic seas, the Navy just needed more resources to track them down and sink them or force them to the surface.

Commander Sörensson knew that he had vessels around him should things turn ugly, several submarines were also trafficiking the waters with some smaller corvettes patrolling the coasts and North Sea. And also the larger cruiser of HMS Själland was to be found in the nearby port of Tordenäs, which usually patrolled the seas together with the HMS Halland, however not today.

The Commander moved swiftly through the bridge, looking over the vast openness of the North Norwegian Sea. He liked it, he sure liked it a lot better than being stationed on Iceland that's for sure, and perhaps more than in the Baltic Sea as well. That always was so, wrong somehow. Even though more stuff happened, they would occasionally spot a Russian submarine or ship or at least something. Here, in the North Norwegian Sea, nothing.

"Herr Kommendörkapten!" A voice cried out behind him as he was about to lean over one of the naval cards, he turned around, facing the source of the sound, it was one of the officers, standing in a salute right behind him.
"Fänrik Larsson. What is it?" The Commander asked, as the Ensign took down his hand.
"There seems to be activities to the northwest of our position just a few minutes ago, Herr Kommendörkapten. We suspect it is a Soviet ship testing its weapons." The Ensign replied, with the rest of the crew now intently listening.

Sörensson gave away a light smile as he heard the news, finally he thought.
"Lieutenant Piper, set course due north, full speed. Let us intercept the Russian vessel on its way home, to show our presence." The Lieutenant then turned on his seat and returned to his control table.
"Ensign Torsson, signal to the fleet and Tordenäs regarding the Soviet naval presence. Report that we are going to intercept the ship." The Commander shouted out as his last command before he sat himself in his chair in the center, raised above the rest of the bridge, as to let him overlook his fellow officers.

"It shalt remind us,
of the abundance of God's greatness,
and that we may consider the grace,
which lasts all year.
" The Commander whispered silently to himself, citing the well-known Nordic hymn.

Outside of Antananarivo, Madagascar
Operation: Poinciana
Objective: Determine the goals and motives of the militia based in Madagascar, possibly establish contact

The UAZ bumped heavily on the untamed rural roads, intensifying as the group journeyed deeper into the Madagascan hinterland. Four members of a private "botanical expedition" sent from Berlin occupied the vehicle. The leader of the group being Stasi agent Adelhied Haussman, her brown hair bumping lightly as she leaned out the window of the buggy and admired the view. Her team consisted of two soldiers and a local Malagsy translator.

It remained to be seen if they would find the militia, or if the militia would find them.

Commonwealth of Ontario and Boreal Columbia
January, 1983

Parliament House, New Columbia

Prime Minister Lee was seated in his office, and had received the reports detailing the sites of each power plant under construction, as well as the new uranium mines across the country. He didn't want to announce it to the world, but the uranium would be useful in developing a nuclear program for Ontario - for deterrence - the Prime Minister had never even considered using them in anger. If a nuclear program was out of reach, then long-range conventional missiles would be effective as well. He sent a message to the Head of the Department of Defence, for him to look into the feasibility of Ontario developing long-range missiles, nuclear or conventional. The Prime Minister was eager to expand the capabilities of his nation's armed forces.

To: Department of Defence
From: Prime Minister Alexander Lee

Please look into the financial and industrial feasibility of the development of nuclear and conventional long-range missiles in Ontario. I expect a nuclear program may be out of reach if pursued independently of other nations, but conventional missiles should be a possibility. I am, however, unsure, and therefore require you to look into the available options with more detail.

The Prime Minister also wanted to look into the possibility of a space mission, with several satellites and maybe even a mission to the moon in the future. He would authorise the creation of an Ontarian Space Board (OSB) which would handle the design and development of space-bound vessels and equipment. They would be a government-run organisation, with the all missions for research purposes, and for the betterment of Ontario. He commissioned the new board to look into the designing of a satellite, primarily for military purposes. The Armed Forces would have to liaise with the board to give the designs and mechanics of their missile detection and radar systems so they could be adapted to fit onto a orbiting satellite.

"Captain, contact. Ship has launched a missile north of our position. Identified as Soviet. It appears to be a test firing."

Captain Dresden thrummed his fingers on the armrest of his chair. He was tired of playing military up near the Arctic, but if something were to happen he would be ready. The HMS Birmingham was a Type 42 Destroyer and well prepared to deal with any threat that may surface up here.

"Any other ships in the area?"

The communications officer made several adjustments to her equipment then confidently replied:

"Aye Captain, Northern Realm destroyer HMS Halland identified. It appears to be changing course to intercept the Soviet vessel."

Several more thrums later.

"Maintain position and monitor the situation. Let the North handle it. This is their priority region. Advise NAVCOM of this development."

To: The Government of the Empire of the North

The United Kingdom welcomes closer relations with our strong allies of the North. We believe it prudent to discuss matters related to our common goals. In particular, the Soviet menace must remain perpetually in check. As well, it would benefit to share our experiences as homogeneous societies, that we may further refine our rich cultures. Chief Magistrate Hart is available to travel on a diplomatic mission to the Empire of the North at your earliest convenience.

United States of America | Japan S.A.Z.
-- The World's a Stage --
January 1983

Image
President Ronald Regan meets with Japanese Governor Nakasone with troops on January 5th.

On January 5th, Ronald Reagan began his multi-week tour of Japan. Since the 1950's, Japan has been a Special Administrative Zone of the United States. The concept of this was inspired from the collapsing British Empire. Japan would be allowed to be separate from the US, but still part of it. It was self governing entirely, but it's foreign affairs, trade, and defense was all managed through the United States of America. This was done at the request of the Japanese when they expressed interest in the idea after Korea became communist. Since the creation of the Japan SAZ, the nation has changed. All Japanese citizens were now American citizens and mainland and Japanese could freely travel back and forth. This brought about an influx of more Japanese people to the west coast as well as many businesses setting up and expanding to Japan. The Emperor of Japan was allowed to retain his ceremonial position, but the true head of state was the US President. The Emperor acts similar to a governor-general in the commonwealth system to the President. He manages anything he needs to, but takes on even a more ceremonial role that in real life. The overlap of what the roles of the President and Emperor are very foggy, but it is understood that politically the Emperor is below the US president, and if the President wants to do an award ceremony or another role of the Emperor, he must concede.

Image
President Reagan meets with Governor Nakasone to discuss the upcoming the State of the Zone on January 7th

It was well understood that Reagan loved Japan. He had a vacation home, pictured above, there and visited multiple times a year. While costly, it was well worth it in his opinion. Despite criticism from the Republican party, who weren't keen on racial issues and as such the SAZ, Reagan was a firm supporter of the SAZ and secretly wanted to see the policy else where.

Image
Regan greets Emperor Hirohito after giving the State of the Zone Speech on January 14th.

The State of the Zone speech is a bi-annual speech from the President to Japan. It occurs in the third year of each presidency as it gives time for the US President to learn Japanese before he gives the speech (typically in Japanese if they can). The speech is very important and is symbolic of the relationship between Japan and the US. Reagan is one of the few presidents to be able to give the speech in Japanese as he wants to see success in the zone. Japan accounts for 1.2 trillion USD of the GDP. Japan is accounted as part of the US in total as it uses the US currency and pays some taxes to the central administration. Japan is vital to the US economy and without it, the nation would not be able to take on the forces of communism in Asia with the USSR, China, Mongolia, and Korea being communist.

Image
Meeting to discuss the 1984 Budget of the United States with Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and senior staff in oval office on January 16th.

Following the visit to Japan, Reagan came back to the US in warm arms, and in a rush. He had very little time before he had to give another major speech, the State of the Union. This time he wouldn't have to speak a different language and he could be comfortable, as he always was. Public speaking was a gift for him with him being an actor and all. An act, a show, that's what it was. Reagan had a plan for him to move beyond a simple actor, and into the seat of a director, and it was going to take a lot of work. Thus, he met with many members of his cabinet as he drafted his ideas down. He planned the budget, and also planned his show. Little by little the pieces were starting to come together.

Image
Reagan gives the State of the Union on January 25th.

"Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, distinguished Members of the Congress, honored guests, and fellow citizens:"

Reagan started the State of the Union the same as those before him. It was conventional and nothing spectacular. He talked of the saving of Social Security, a major success for his administration. He goes onto talk about many other things. His bloating of the deficit and subsequently the debt is still happening, nothing different. Within the speech, he did mention Japan and its success in helping the US economy and its growth. The success of the SAZ was a key note and as any good director, he was no stranger to foreshadowing.

Image
Reagan meets with multiple advisers to discuss the possibility of his own Reagan Doctrine on January 29th.

The possibility of a Reagan Doctrine was intriguing for most of the world. Eisenhower and other presidents had their own, so perhaps it was time for Reagan. But were all the elements in place? The elections were just around the corner. But could he wait that long? Perhaps, but he didn't want to. The democrats had no strong candidates that could challenge him. He was a success story, though a little lacking. Soon he would announce SDI but also his own doctrine. It would be difficult, but perhaps it could save the US and humanity.

Stockholm, Riksdagen, The Chamber
February 1983, 15:00

"With all Members of Parliament having spoken on the issue, I deem the issue fit to be voted on." The Speaker said as he shuffled some papers about on his desk, before grasping his gavel in his right fist.
"All Members that are against this proposition vote Nay." The Speaker then signaled with his left hand for the opposing Members to voice their discontent, and after almost half the Chamber, the Liberal-Conservative half had stood up and voted against the proposition. The Speaker then signaled them to sit down again and raised his voice.
"All Members that are for this proposition vote Aye." And he yet again signaled for the Members to rise with his left hand, and the Social Democrats rising from their seats and shouting out their vote.

The Speaker twisted in his chair, along with several of the other Members of Parliament, looking over to the Communist bench who sat in silence with their eyes straight forward to the podium, unflinching. The Speaker darted his eyes from between the communists and the Social Democratic seats, his eyes falling on the Prime Minister who looked as shocked as the rest of the Members, but who simply nodded to the Speaker.
"I repeat." The Speaker started, "ALL Members that are for this proposition vote Aye." And yet again the Social Democrats rose from their chairs, several of them looking over to the Communists who remained seated. The Speaker then, simply by instinct waved his left hand, and the Social Democrats slowly sat down in their seats again.

A short silence that felt longer than ever crept across the Chamber, the spectators and journalists sitting up on the stand. It was long before anyone reacted, and then it was one of the Liberals who rose up.
"Vote!" He shouted, soon being followed by several of his party associates and almost all in the Chamber except for the Communists rising up and shouting the same word, causing a deafening and non-eligible roar from the Chamber.
"Order, order!" The Spekaer shouted as he slammed his gavel down on his desk, with the Members eventually silencing and sitting down. "Now, if the Members will sit down and take their positions a vote will be carried out as there was no clear majority for either side."

The Prime Minister Wanellius looked over to the Communist Leader Ingerberg, who met the gaze of the Prime Minister and smiling faintly.
"That bastard..." The Prime Minister whispered to his Deputy sitting next to him in the rows of benches.
"I'd suggest that you make your way to your office as quickly as possible, through the tunnels. I will handle the crowds." His Deputy replied as they looked over the rest of the Members who now were sitting down in their seats.
"Take Anders with you, the people will want to hear the Speaker give his mind about this new, issue." The Prime Minister said as they two collectively pressed the green buttons, signaling Aye, on their desks before them.

They sat, awaiting intently the results to show up on the board next to the Speaker, as all eyes were turned towards it as the lamps signifying each Member showed up on the board and the collected votes for each side below the board.
AYE: 238
NAY: 236
ABSTAIN: 26
The Speaker then swirled his chair around, facing the Chamber, and all eyes in the Chamber facing him.
"The proposed proposition has not garnered enough votes, and the proposition is not passed." He said slamming the gavel down into the desk. "Chamber adjourned." He followed and yet again slammed it into the desk.

At an instant the Chamber was filled with the sounds of the Members of Parliament who now stood up and talked amongst themselves, with the Prime Minister along with several other Social Democrats walking out of the chamber, away from the rest of the MPs and journalists, with their steps heading towards the tunnels that would lead them to Rosenbad. No one uttering a word until they were well away from the Chamber and anyone to hear them.
"Gustaf." The Minister for Finance started, "what will this mean? The vote failed, the Communists voted against us." He said as they approached Rosenbad and the large Government Chamber, where the Ministers would meet and discuss.

"Indeed, Erik. And they never had before. We believed they would not try to take down the Government like this. A failed proposition means in theory that the Government does not hold enough support. In theory that means that we are an illegitimate Government, and in practice it means that I will pay a visit to His Majesty." The Prime Minister then sat down in his chair at the short end of the table. "At least we are lucky that it is the Emperor that still decides the Government, even though Parliament of course has a say in it. Perhaps a re-election will be needed if the Communists insist on this new policy. They surely want some influence. Or perhaps we will have to sign a deal with some of the Bourgeouise."

The rest of the miniisters in the room stood by and looked on as their leader spoke in his own monologue. This was a new situation to them, they had always been able to count with the Communists to vote for their proposals, as they did not want to see a Bourgeouise government, but perhaps now they were tired of playing the second fiddle.
"Well, this might actually work into our favour." The Foreign Minister said.
"How?" The Minister for Health, Kurt Wannerström asked.
"Well, it could rid us from this situation in Parliament, gain ourselves our own majority. Like old times." Jan Eliasson continued.
"But what if it doesn't? The economy is not exactly the best, and we lost seats in the last election. Why would we gain any seats now?" The Prime Minister retorted.
"With this, situation in Parliament, perhaps the voters will see the need of a stable Government? God knows that the Liberals, Conservatives and Farmers can't get along and form a coalition together." The Foreign Minister walked up to the chair where the Prime Minister sat.
"Alright." The Prime Minister said.

Unified Orange River State

February, 1983

Peter Vrijgraaf slowly paced around his office; he was lost, deep in his own thoughts. The UORS had the infrastructure to match Europe, having the richest demographic in South Africa had certainly helped this and yet it lacked the population to become a World Power. Still, the population was still over 95% White, and they had seen their wages rise to $7,000 recently, which was fuelling a boom in the economy and a rise in living standards. Relations with South Africa had been utterly destroyed by independence, with daily reconnaissance on them being a daily occurrence. However, after thinking about this, Peter Vrijgraaf, also known as the President of South Africa had a brainstorm and came up with a plan.

He started by inviting a few generals and ministers into his office, then with their agreement he began to write up a document that detailed his plan in detail. He'd use his one chance to write this into law, and that would be today at last, several hours later and the bill was finished and the black ink was still fresh.

At last, he sneakily passed the bill into law and read the first bit to himself.

The Land Settlement Act of 1983

The UORS government officially declares that any immigrants who arrive in the country after January 1983 will receive one hundred acres of land for free to build themselves a homestead, in addition, they will not be taxed for the first year of their living in the UORS....

President Reagan meets with Afghan/Pakistani Mujahadeen in secret in February.

Reagan had many meetings and visitors in the months of February and March. Originally since his beginning of the presidency he had the idea of turning the tide of communism, and so he has done. He has supported many rebel groups such as the Taliban, but not all were prosperous. He had his own ideas on what he should do to fix communism, and it was no longer rebels. They weren't getting the job done. Their failures were to noticeable. It was time for a change of plans.

President Reagan addresses domestic issues in a speech on February 27th.

Reagan understood the importance of foreign policy, but he also did not neglect domestic policy. In fact, he would intertwine the two. In February, he would give a speech to the nation talking about some of the domestic issues the nation faced. The economy was obviously a major issue, but he used the speech to bring up some important issues that were being under-emphasized. Using his power of "agenda-setting" with the media. By bringing up immigration and drug issues, he shifted the media's attention to these issues that would give him support in solving these issues.

Image
Reagan meets Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid as of March 12th.

Following the media frenzy, Reagan meet with his good friend, Miguel de la Madrid, President of Mexico. The two would discuss many issues that concerned the two nations. Immigration and drugs were two major issues that were discussed to no avail. Any solution must involve both nations, the two could at least agree to this. Another thing that the two could agree to was a series of negotiations to find a solution to these issues that would report its findings by the end of June. A crunch time, but Reagan wanted to act fast. And fast he would.

DUTCH REPUBLIC OF THE NETHERLANDS

Amsterdam, Capital of the Netherlands
March 1983

President Abraham Klerck sat at his relatively large desk in his relatively large office. For a man who was only a mere 5 feet 11 inches, he preferred a considerably large desk and office. Of course, he had inherited the building from his predecessor; Joseph Kubler the following year and 2 months ago. Elections every two years happened in December and the votes were tallied at Christmas Eve. On Christmas day, the result was announced, and on New Year's the same time a new year was celebrated, a new President was celebrated too. Or, every two years that is. The normal procedure alloted the President be sworn in 10 minutes to Midnight, in order to celebrate both a New Year, and count down the minutes to a new Presidency. Klerck had appreciated the ceremony very much so. It had been both a touching ceremony for him and the people of Amsterdam, as it occurred in the central downtown area to a crowd of thousands, if not a million people.

Klerck, a Social Conservative was the 7th President of the Dutch Republic, and the 3rd Social Conservative to hold the position. His job over the past year had been relatively simple. With the world still brewing at its normal temperament, Klerck had mainly focused on Domestic issues, and welfare policies, helping to get Parliament and the people on his side for a possible second election. He realized that in certain contexts, he needed to also keep his options available to keeping both the Congolese people and the Surinamese people happy. They were influential key components to any successful Dutch politicians' reign as President. He sat at his desk, anxiously working on himself his Staat Natie or Nation's State Address. Unlike in America, the President gave this speech in March instead of January. It was given every year a President was in power, so Klerck was giving it his second year. He had been asked if he wanted help on it from advisers, but Klerck, the smart educated, graduate of Hague University that he was, decided to work on it on his own. It was time to finally give the speech.

He stood at the podium on the front steps of the Leidsman Palace or Leader Palace, his residence and location of his office. His Cabinet stood to one side of him, the 22 members of Parliament to the other side of him, in two rows of eleven. His Viceroy stood just to the right of him, and his Joint Chief Commander to the direct left of him. He began:

"Politicians, leaders, workers, troops, and citizens of the Dutch Homeland and the Commonwealth, it is a great honor for me to be giving this speech to you two consecutive years in a row.
It is not always so present that a leader stays in good health his entire term, but efficiently, that seems to be the case for myself. I have not been sick for any long-lasting period of my tenure as President thus far, and I plan not to be anytime soon. Thus, I will begin on the current state of affairs of our great Dutch Republic.
Economic improvements are bolstering. Our GDP Per Capita has risen to an astounding 67,000. This is far higher than the World Average. Our GDP itself is at a well standing 1.125 billion dollars, and continues to keep itself at a steady level despite expenses needed to pay each year.
Our best efforts to keep security, health, and welfare in the Commonwealth nations of Suriname and Congo have gone incredibly well. The Governors of both of these colonies, in accordance with Viceroy Mastun have been able to relatively direct domestic forces in their nation where needed, and continue to improve infrastructure, education, welfare, and transportation in all aspects of life.
The state of the Netherlands in a foreign standpoint is that we continue to prove to the world we are not a nation to be messed with. With three operational full-scale Aircraft Carriers able to hold a maximum of 50 aircraft each, a well-suited Battleship, a fleet of other ships mostly used for support roles but also major roles in minor conflicts, as well as a large Army, Colonial Army, Air Force, and Special Forces and Intelligence division. As always, the message I give to you in the short address we call the 'Staat Natie' in the small timeframe of 5-10 minutes this speech is supposed to go, I urge all Dutch citizens, either Dutch, Congolese, Surinamese, young, old, and whatever the case, to become an active mind and body of our Republic, and to help not only themselves, but others of the country to live a lasting legacy on society of our great nation, and to ensure the security, welfare, and prevalence of this great country and its people. Thank You."

As the President stepped off from the top stair of the front of his Palace, and back inside the secure doors, taking no questions his JCC grabbed him by the shoulder, jokingly pulling him aside and said: "Great speech again Abe! Let's get some drinks in a few minutes yeah?" He said, motioning towards the basement, where there were the pleasantries of being President; a fully stocked bar, multi-purpose sports gymnasium and movie theater, as well as other recreational rooms.

Garamba, Dutch Congo
March, 1983

Sergeant Mathew DeLovie , a dutchmen originating from the Homeland, moved through the city of Garamba, with his squad, made up of 5 Rifleman, 1 Reconnaissance Sniper, 1 Radioman, a Medical Officer, a Heavy Gunner, and a Demolition Specialist. All of them were part of the Dutch Foreign Army, the armies that acted as both police and military units in the Dutch Commonwealth, as well as extra forces in Foreign invasions of enemy countries. Their vehicle was a Bushmaster MRAP, produced by Australasia but highly imported by the Dutch. The MRAP was made to evade Mine-explosives on the ground, with a V-shaped bottom that could repel a blast and lessen the odds of the vehicle tipping over. Matt talked to the driver, not part of his squad in the back of the vehicle. "So, how much farther till we hit the border?" He said. "Not much, we've got to divert and go East or else the Commies will catch onto us, and we'll be fucked." He said.
The operation Matt and his team were conducting was officially off the books. It was a joint operation by Egyptian and Dutch Intelligence services to determine the effectiveness and size of armies of the Sudanese People's Republic located in the Southern regions. The direct roads from Garamba to Yambio, the Sudanese city across the border, were checkpointed, sniffed and patrolled along. Therefore, with a military-marked truck speeding into the road, the Sudanese would not be pleased nor allow such an unauthorized occurrence.
The mission was to actually moved East a mile from the actual physical border, where several jungles were located in the process. A snap had been found in the relatively un-cared for fence of that section of the border, so Matt and his squad were assigned to move into that opening, and move threw the jungle on the Sudanese side of the border until they could take photos, take data and graph specific movements of troops and firebases in the area for Dutch and then passed-on Egyptian Intelligence. The truck started moving East once it was on the far Northern outskirts of the city of Garamba. It would be a good few minutes, possibly an hour or two, before they reached their desired location. Matt instructed the pilot to wake him when the time came, as he and a few of his men fell asleep, and a few stayed awake and played cards, smoked, or talked of pointless shit to eachother.

...................................

In a matter of however long it appeared in Matt's self-consciousness in his sleep, a good deal of time had gone by, and now the driver, and the National Bureau of Internal Affairs spook the squad was assigned to bring with them, were pulling on him to wake up. His squad had already disembarked, and were setting up their equipment. The driver and spook now stood with their weapons ready as well, as Matt collected himself and looked around to check all of them were ready. The driver, an African Congolese man recruited into the DFA, also had his weapon ready, but Matt instructed he stay with the truck. The spook would come along, although he kept his black sunglasses on, and his ghost-like persona for the entirety of the time it took for them to all get under the small slip in the fence. Making their way a few meters of distance into the jungle, there was movement South of them, coming back from where they'd crossed. Matt held up his fist, ordering to stay put, as the men, although camouflaged with green and grassy clothing and vests, were still vulnerable to attack. The movement came.
It turned out to be the driver, he ran towards Matt, gripping his rifle, and running up to him frantically. He started shouting, saying how on the truck radio, he'd heard chatter from across the border of them crossing, and that an obvious trap had ensued. He kept talking when a bullet sprayed into his chest cavity, ripping apart his left lung, and sending him to his knees on the grassy, dirt jungle floor. Another spray of bullets, and his entire body sunk down to the ground in a bloody heap. Matt ducked behind a tree, jumping into a prone position. The team was caught off guard. A rifleman; his friend Thomas Jones went down next. A crackle of marksman rifle fire cam from the Northwest and hit him in his crouched position behind a tree. Another Rifleman, Kendrick Lee, went down with a thunder of automatic rifle fire. Matt quickly made out the sounds of AK's and a Dragunov, as well as possibly a Mosin-Nagant Marksman Rifle. He guessed, but by the intelligence he had on the Communist Sudanese, he quickly analyzed as much. The Intelligence spook got hit in the arm, and went down to his back, acting dead. Matt thought to himself Coward, Spook would rather be captured or lye dying in a jungle than fight for the Homeland.
His two other riflemen; Cory and Lance, went down, and his last rifleman; Fergusson was shot in the head, a kill-blow and a disgusting, and horrific sight as brains splattered across the green jungle floor and surrounding flora. His Radioman was right next to him. Matt instructed him to make a call to headquarters but he insisted the Commies were jamming them, somehow, someway, all the way out here. At that exact moment, a grenade came flying next to them, and as Matt jumped again out of harms way, yelling for the young lad to also get out of the way, he instead tried to cook the bomb by holding the handle on the grenade. He didn't get a firm enough grip, and it went off in a matter of seconds after he attempted such a thing. His hand, face, and chest exploded in a furious, grotesque sight, and his body lay splattered in blood a split-second later.
Matt's Sniper made a fight for the commies, who appeared to have large numbers on their side. He finally got shot, a clear blow to the midsection following by a Kidney shot, and losing grip from the height he was perched at in the tree killed him, as he fell onto his head, and died of the impact,, falling onto a sharp rock. His head grimaced with blood, and his eyes stared directly at Matt. Matt, still firing what was left of the 36 rounds of M4 Rifle ammunition in his magazine, reached for his pistol if it came to that, and realized on his Gunner and Demolition Specialist were left. He remembered his medic; Eddy Narrows, but saw him laying across a tree stump out in the open, his body clearly one of the first to go, but unnoticed by Matt. The demoman quickly fired a rocket into the hiding, and well-camouflaged commies. One exploded a few yards away, and frantic screams came from the other side of the battleground. He quickly loaded another one into the launcher, but was shot in the arm when he shouldered it, firing it into the tree above him as it quickly went down on him, and crushed his entire body, a quick, frantic yelp was all that was heard of him. The Gunner, who had been perched next to him behind the tree, quickly ran out from behind it, looking for a new cover spot, as Matt tried to wave for him from behind his new tree, he didn't spot him in time, and was shot about a foot away from Matt. He had almost walked on top of him, while not noticing him prone on the ground in the jungle greens. He fell and bled out at that very moment.
Matt whipped around the tree to find a man staring down the face of his barrel, he fired a round into his chest, propelling him back as he heard another footstep behind him, and turned to look to the left and behind. He met another Sudanese commie, dressed in the standard conscript gear. He wrestled him as the commie attempted to disarm him, and just as he pushed him off him, he turned back around to face the majority of where the gunshots had come to see a whole group of commies converging on the line his dead squad had formed, and a butt of a rifle came to hit him in the cheek. He went down. He blacked out as he saw commies standing all around his grounded body.

..........................................................

Matt awoke to realizing he was inside the dark, red lighted back of a BMP-1 and a Russian face was staring into his from across the column of seats where regularly soldiers would sit. The treaded vehicle moved along at a slow pace, as the man sat across from him, and two his right was the NBIA Spook. Both of them cuffed to the metal railings of the arm-rests of the seats, the Russian man looked at him. The man spoke. "Mister Matt, as I will call you." He said, dropping a file of everything related to Matt's service in the Dutch Armed Forces at his feet in the floor of the BMP. "I am Gregory Savaya, Russian-Sudanese or Russonese officer of the SKR, basically the KGB of the Sudanese People's Republic. We knew everything about your op, from the deployment, to the number of men in your squad to your friendly neighborhood spook here Henry Genva." He said gesturing to the spook to Matt's right. "The People's Republic doesn't often get Democracies in tight spots where they have to pay out or sell out to the international community about foreign espionage. But, it appears the Dutch are about to get squawking, or you'll start talking." He said. "When we get back to our offices and jails in Khartoum, I am going to personally make you and Mr. Genva's lives here a living hell." He said. "I won't say a word to you. I won't betray my country to a commie-pig!" Matt yelled, spitting on the man's face from across the aisle. "Well then," Gregory said. "It appears we'll play the hard way," as he grabbed his pistol, and hit Matt in the cheek with it, knocking him out again. He went black, and unconscious.
