However, despite his public show of being uncaring of criticism from Gavril von Licht, he is rather wounded. He had always respected Gavril's father, whom he had taken as an inspiration. Knowing that George wouldn't have tolerated his beliefs either, Emmanuel entered a sharp state of depression, and nearly committed suicide, attempting to hang himself from a wooden beam in his lodge. His wife discovers him before he can do so.

After a short few days of thought after that particularly violent confrontation between his wife and himself, which lead to her leaving him and Ithaca... He decides to take action.

In order to avoid potential assassinations from angry Russians, Rumites, Crimeans, what have you; or from further infamy, realizing that such reputation was harming his career and future, Carasso leaves his homeland of Rum behind, and migrates to Japanese Ethiopia to focus on spirituality. He fabricates a Rumite passport and takes up residence in Northern Ethiopia under the assumed name Ferdinand Eichemann. The last name he borrowed from one of his favorite books -- The Righteous Cause.

He intends to return to Ithaca and Salonike again one day as Emmanuel Carasso, but he feels that maybe this could be good for him. As a settler in Japanese Ethiopia, his request for "permanent citizenship" was increased as he proved his physical health, proper age, and willing to form a family. He also began to learn Japanese as a prerequisite of his citizenship license. In this time, he began to write a sequel to The Righteous Cause, which he intended to release at some point, in honor of his inspiration.

Two days after arriving in the northern Ethiopian settlement of Taiyō-shi, Ferdinand meets a young Japanese woman named Akiko Murakami, and the two marry on a whim. They would, ironically, be married for the rest of his life. The two quickly make plans to have a great life in Ethiopia. Ferdinand, while aspiring to write again, is formally employed as the overseer of a Japanese mine on the edge of town. Using the money from this, he will support his family and begin his writing career on the side.

Several days later, after his former wife commits suicide by throwing herself off of a balcony, Rumite police come to Ithaca to question Emmanuel Carasso on the circumstances of his wife's death. When they arrive, they find the home abandoned. They find a newspaper on the table with a copy of "The Lies of Zionism" -- the newspaper is dated at least a week before her suicide. Nobody knows the circumstances of Emmanuel Carasso's disappearance, but many blame Zionists, some blame Tatars, others blame the von Licht family for trying to eliminate their closest rival... but it's entirely hearsay.

Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa

For the time being, the four former states were now merely the names of provinces in the new nation, but part of the Unity Treaty ensured that the Boer capitals of Pretoria and Bloemfontein would continue to serve a major role. Parliament would meet in Cape Town, the South African High Court would be in Bloemfontein, and the Prime Minister's official home would be in Pretoria. Actually, Rhodes spent nearly all of his time in Cape Town and made only the occasional visit. But on this day, he received a letter from Corporal Thomas explaining the Japanese migration into Natal. Rhodes, ever the loyal imperialist, gladly accepted the proposal, a deal that would last for several decades, even though many Boers didn't agree.

Throughout the Empire, Mehmet Suprun's book, as well as Carasso's latest piece, were both condemned for showcasing the evils of racism in Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and India. Boers in South Africa and some Australians, however, thought the book true enough while Ishikawa likened it to the works of the former Confederate doctor(since repudiated even in his own country)Samuel A. Cartwright.

Another problem occurred due to the assassination of the Ukrainian emperor. Britain sent proper condolences, and Queen Victoria was induced to bring extra protection on her trip to Japan, which was now starting.

Also, Britain accepted the proposal on behalf of the entire Empire, and all dominions and colonies would participate under a united British team.

Kiev, Ukraine Romania

Oleksandr is delighted with Mussolini's response of acceptance. And eagerly awaited his arrival.

Mussolini rode into Kiev that day, escorted by Ukraine-Romanian soldiers, Oleksandr, having regained his composure from his personal tragedy stood awaiting him with a smile on his face. When Mussolini stepped out, Oleksandr approached him and held out his hand. "Privyet, Mr. Mussolini. I am a fan of your writing." Mussolini, a man who was used to being surrounded by soldiers, but not in such a fashion took a moment to adjust to his surroundings. "Oh, Greetings, your majesty. I must apologise for my rudeness, I am not used to being in the presence of royalty." Oleksandr nodded with a smile. "All is good friend." He gestured towards the palace. "Come inside friend. We have much to discuss." Mussolini nodded and went inside.

Once they both sat down Oleksandr pulled out a copy of Mussolini's Doctrine of Fascism. "I have found great inspiration in your book here. What you said about the growth of weak liberal society, and the need for strong, centralised and militarist governments like in the glory days of old. I wish to implement this in my own country, so that we may stand strong against all threats, foreign and domestic." Mussolini, shocked that his work has influenced not only people, but world leaders, responded. "Ah, its good to know that my books have reached you in the right way. Far too often I get death threats and such from angry people across the world who condemn me as mad or evil. Now, in regard to your state, you should stick to its main tenets, but be sure to make any modifications to match your specific nations case." These last words resonated with Oleksandr strangely. They kept echoing for the remainder of Mussolini's visit. After the conversation, a feast was held and Mussolini remained in the country for a few more days, campaigning around for his ideology, and he returned to Roma Italia, where he began work on another book.

Back in Kiev, Oleksandr finished reading Emmanuel Carasso's newest book. It finally came to him. The version of fascism that works best with the Ukraine-Romanian people, was one based on the doctrine of the racial superiority of the Slavic Race. He was overjoyed he finally came to an idea. He too, would begin writing his own novel.

The Crimean book is banned in Venezuela, Switzerland, Roma Italia, and Ukraine-Romania. The Rumite book, is banned in all nations but Ukraine-Romania. Both books, despite the former being banned, incite a set of riots against Crimean citizens, the destruction of Crimean businesses and the burning of Mosques in the southern towns. This is later known as the Night of Broken Glass, due to the smashing of windows in the businesses. After the attacks, propaganda posters are pinned around the nation blaming Crimea for the death of Tsar Viktor. This incites more resentment and hatred.

The two main individuals accused of orchestrating Carasso's disappearance- Hayim ben Tziyon and Gavriil fon Likht- react in near-totally opposite fashions to his apparent death.

Gavriil fon Likht, as it so happens, is preparing to marry a Confederate woman named Harriet Brixton in New Orleans. He's also started calling himself Gabriel Light- an Anglicized form of his name- akin to how his father began calling himself Dzhordzh fon Likht instead of Georg von Licht. With his wedding day approaching, Light has no wish to be bothered by reporters asking about his possible role in Carasso's vanishing act. Indeed, the question exasperates him; the von Lichts do not have the ability or capability to engineer assassinations or kidnap rival authors. Towards the few reporters who do get to him, and to those who know him, Light shows outright disgust towards Carasso as a person, though he never comments on his presumed death. Light, as the second generation of his family to be forced to leave his homeland forever- sympathizes with the Zionists and the ZWC, putting him at odds with Carasso immediately. He views Carasso as someone who was attempting to imitate his father, and instead caricatured him. His bluntness and hypocrisy infuriate Light, as does his perceived apathy towards them being pointed out. The closest Light gets towards sympathizing with Carasso is admitting that he is upset for the family of Carasso's late wife- her suicide must have broken their hearts, after all. Gabriel's brother in Russia, Iosif, tells a Confederate reporter who was verbally beaten by Light that Gabriel inherited their father's passion, and his father's tendency to easily anger.

Ben Tziyon, though, is devastated. After the Ithaka Conference, he had come to view Emmanuel Carasso as a friendly rival and a worthy intellectual opponent to spar with. If Light despised Carasso with burning hatred but was unable to do anything to harm him, ben Tziyon(in control of the ZWC and the Z'roa HaHaganah) was able to take his life but had no will to do so whatsoever. Ben Tziyon is struck hard by news of his disappearance- but after hearing from Speaker Lieverman that he is a suspect in Carasso's disappearance causes him to collapse to his knees, breaking down in tears in front of the Knesset and begin yelling at the members of the press present. "You men in the presses, only ever concerned with making up stories to sell, regardless of their verity or impact... It is very hard to see a close friendship going to pieces like a rope of sand. It is heartbreaking to lose a man you considered yourself to be close to in spite of it all, to lose someone with whom you had overcome rivalry. It is tragedy to see one of the two leaders of the Jewish people vanish into the abyss. And you, before the day is out, seek only to sell papers, spread rumors with no basis in truth? You would destroy me in doing so, for the loss of Emmanuel Carasso has left me more fragile than glass already." He contemplates resigning, though the members of the Knesset- in need of the leadership of the Reviver of Zionism- convince him to remain. Part of ben Tziyon, though, did not seem likely to recover from the disappearance of Emmanuel Carasso.

The Ukrainian-Romanian shift towards fascism worries Russia. So soon after the Great War, there are already rumors that Russia has developed a plan to quickly move against Ukraine so as to prevent their occupation of Crimea, and to move in to the Donbass and down the Dnieper and Dniester to destroy a violently expansionist Ukraine-Romania. The move is also worrying to the Yugoslavs, Hungarians, Czechoslovaks, and Galicians, who fear what a fascist Ukraine-Romania might try to do to them.

Ferdinand Eichemann keeps in close proximity to the events of the world. The further disdain expressed by Light does nothing to Eichemann in particular, he remains stoic in the face of his continued disdain. However, with patience, Eichemann hears the news of Ben Tzyion. Deciding to ease the man's broken soul, he sends a small letter to him.

Ben,

i have departed rum on my own power, and i have sought out the truth of the world. emmanuel carasso may never return, but ferdinand eichemann will. my friend, i am safe and happy in japanese ethiopia, but I plead of you to not tell anyone of these circumstances. We will see each other again some day. I'm sure of it.

Until then, forge on in your cause.

Best wishes,
Ferdinand Eichemann

The news that Ukraine-Romania is taking his racist book to heart and melding it into the fascist ideology causes him extreme distress, so much so that he locked himself in a closet and wailed for an hour and begged forgiveness from God for his sin. Eichemann wrote a small book that somehow found it's way into the world through a small publication firm in Japanese Ethiopia, using his assumed name.

The Great Dictator was a criticism of fascism and the authoritarian ideology taking root in Ukraine-Romania. A young man named Oleg Tukhachevsky was serving on the frontlines with Crimea during the Great War. However, an incident leaves the young man hospitalized for twenty years. In the future year 1912, Ukraine is ruled by "the Sons and Daughters of the Double Cross", a tyrannical party under the "Vozhd-Tsar" Mikhail.

In the book he writes, "Under the symbol of the Double Cross, liberty was banished, and only the voice of Mikhail was heard..." He recounts that Oleg and Mikhail look exactly the same, and while Mikhail plots the invasion of Crimea, and succeeds, at the very end, he is assassinated by poison and Oleg takes his place. At the end, Oleg gives a speech of brotherhood and peace, calling for "soldiers to overthrow their chains of oppression, and forge a new world -- a decent world..."

The book is an overt criticism of Carasso's previous work, the general idea of racial discrimination, and the new Ukrainian Tsar, who is depicted as a megalomaniac bufoon via Mikhail. In the book, Eichemann gives a scathing criticism of the psuedo science in both Carasso and in Mehmet S's work.

"The science involved in determining the inferiority of races is false... humanity are all brothers in the end -- why must we classify ourselves as things? It is regrettable that there exist such beliefs in this world."

Privately, Eichemann struggled with his own racist tendencies and used the book as a means of turning away from the violent racism he showed against the Crimeans, which he now regrets.

Ben Tziyon is overjoyed by the news- but knows that he must keep Carasso's flight secret. As such, he begins to act as though he still is to believe Carasso is dead, and that this has broken him.

The mysterious Ferdinand Eichemann's book begins to sell in Russia because of its portrayal of Ukraine-Romania, and immediately becomes a bestseller. Soon, the book spreads to Balkans, and flies off the shelves in Galicia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia; in one incident, Hungarian forces in the Transylvanian town of Kovászna capture a man attempting to sneak into Ukraine-Romania to raise the flag of the Double Cross over the Romanian city of Focșani. The book spreads to Germany and Denmark, and then across the Atlantic, to the Confederacy and its allies. Across the world, it sells and sells and sells.

This, however, leaves the world with one question: who is Ferdinand Eichemann?

The overwhelmingly positive response to the story bolsters Ferdinand's spirit. When he is visited in the small town by the head publisher, Hiroshi Itamaru, Itamaru presents him with a fat check of royalties, and the day's newspaper. Eichemann nearly collapses over, but steadies himself. With his new wealth, he purchases the small start up mining company that he was working for, and begins operating Eichemann Industries, which soon begins to expand across Japanese and Rumite Africa, buying up mines and operations.

With time now available to dedicate to his cause, Eichemann continues his work on the sequel to his favorite novel, which he only refers to as Redemption in diaries, as well as other possible works.

A few weeks after the release of The Great Dictator, Eichemann officially converts to Greek Orthodox Christianity, and his wife follows suit, abandoning Buddhism.

Despite the growing public interest in the shadowy figure that he was -- Ferdinand Eichemann, he remains secluded to the small Ethiopian town. Letters find their way, but visitors are far few and in-between, and are nominally told to leave the author alone.

Oron, Nigeria

The Nigerian Congress, the proper name for the Tribal council that met in the city of Oron, was sensing dark times for Roma Italia. In light of this, the heads of the council began drafting something that had not been seen since the Americaner Revolution, a declaration of independence for the Nigerian nation. The Nigerians wished such an affair to be kept out of the eyes of the public in fear of being attacked by Mussolini's stormtroopers.

The Nigerians decided that their government would be based off of the same ideals of the Americaner revolution, the idea that a nation can exist without a King or an absolute leader, but the new government would be based off of the Italian and Confederate legislative branches.

Italia Proper

Back in the homeland, political turmoil and strife began with the growing popularity of the Imperial Party, the political party run by Benito Mussolini.

Upon hearing of his gaining popularity, Mussolini finishes his newest book, Life in a Fascist State. The book itself describes Mussolini's ideal fascist nation, the one he envisions for Roma and her empire. Such a society includes the full-mobilisation of the populace, the military having it's own social class, and the governmental power being consolidated at its uppermost echelons. The book, in the beginning states that it is dedicated to his dearest friends and comrades in the Fascist ideology, Tsar Oleksandr Kostiuk and Prince Titus Agrioli.

Kiev, Ukraine-Romania

On this day, Oleksandr and his loyal Dukes pass a new set of laws written in secret in the city of Poltava, after which the laws were named. The Poltava Laws made specific regulations on what the Crimeans could do in the Empire. They were banned from voting or participating in the lower Dumas, restricted to designated settlements in remote parts of the country, and they were banned from participating in school.

These acts, along with other actions against Crimeans and the lower classes boosted the support of the Communist faction in the nation. Grigory Petrovsky, close friend of Belinsky and the only person who knew of his current location. Petrovsky's protests, which he organised across the nation prompted the formation of a secret police, the Shturmovyky, also known as the Blackshirts due to their black uniforms. These soldiers began hunting down communists and organised the forced migration of the Crimeans to their respective settlements.

Mehmet Suprun hears of the Poltava Laws, and condemning them, he writes very feverishly a new book: "Uygar" (عغلشق. The Civilized). In Ugyar, a Crimean Tatar family living in Herson (اثقسخد, Ukrainian: Скадовськ, Skadovsk) is due to be sent to a remote "settlement" in the Ukraine. While the local inhabitants lived together in harmony for centuries: it was once part of the Crimean Khanate before it got annexed in 1783, and under Oleksandr, the Crimeans and the Ukrainians were pitted against each other by the government's orders.

Thus, the prosperous merchant family, the Ugyars were ordered to be deported: all moving to a small mountain town near Bucharest. A 14 year old boy, Yusuf Ugyar however flees, dressed as a Ukrainian and assuming the name, "Pol Voyin." Ugyar/Voyin flees to one of his friends home, who is Ukrainian. That boy, Leonid Kukhar's parents opposed Oleksandr and felt the Poltava Laws were unjust. Over time, he adjusts to being Ukrainian, and pretends to be a Ukrainian, but he feels that he is more Crimean inside. One night, when he was 16, he reads a book of Crimean history and shows the historic Crimean Khanate's borders as of 1600. Desiring those borders, he informs Leonid Kukhar and since both still feel resentment (Ugyar since his family was deported, Kukhar since the new families are more racist), they run away from home again and start finding more hidden Crimeans. They start a revolt, taking over the city of Herson and calling themselves the "Greater Khanate Movement." At the same time in Crimea, many hear of Yusuf Ugyar and support him, but the Khan is hesitant to support the rebellion because of the fact that he was not seen as viable and he desired peace. Some mercenaries join him, but the Ukrainians find out and hunt Yusuf and his friend, Leonid down. Ultimately, Ugyar conquers the coast of the Ukraine, but from Herson onwards, the Greater Khanate Movement gets hunted down by Ukrainians until they are cornered in Mariupol and soundly defeated by the Ukrainians: the Ukrainians then respond by exterminating all Crimean Tatars in the country and only a few survive. Leonid's family was also exterminated as collaborators to the Crimean imperialists, and the Ukrainians begin a plan to retake the Crimea... again.

Across Ukraine-Romania, Uygar was publicly burned and more anti-Crimean riots occurred. It was because of this, Tsar Oleksandr decided it was best to move the Crimeans to internment camps to ensure their safety from the rioters. To many Crimeans this seemed like Oleksandr was finally beginning to look favorably upon them. They did not know how wrong they would be.

It was banned in the Ilkhanate as Caliph Tangri stated that it "Was only a tool to stir aggression" and "Mehmet Suprun is much like the French author Lefevre and the Italian Benito Mussolini, a blind nationalists whom seek to do nothing but plunge the world into yet another world war."

Caracas, Venezuela

Antoni arrives at his destination at long last. After fleeing Ukraine-Romania he decided he would stow away on a cargo ship bound for Roma Italia, and then taking a cruise ship to Caracas where he would meet some of his close friends that were in the Venezuelan government. Evidently, he had not yet heard of what had happened in his home.

Rome, Roma Italia

Horatius, who held very liberal views himself and was often found to be a proponent of peoples rights, held the Nigerian declaration of independence in his hands with slight shock. He had always viewed the colony as loyal to the empire, but this had shown otherwise.

He responded to the declaration. He granted Nigeria their independence, but only if he could remain monarch over the new nation. He would hold no power over Nigeria, and his title as imperator would only be symbolic. He sent his counter offer to the Nigerians, hoping they would accept.

A few days later in Oron, Nigeria

The Congress, who admittedly not completely satisfied with Horatius' request, they decided to accept the Emperors offer and decided to hold an official ceremony in Oron, which at the decision of the Congress would be renamed Horatia, in honor of the benevolent leader. The ceremony would be held on June 1st. In the meantime, Nigeria would be holding its first elections to declare its first Consul-President whom would meet Horatius at the ceremony.

The Nigerian National Congress sent invitations to nations across the world to attend the ceremony on June 1st. Nigeria was now officially the first post-colonial nation to gain full autonomy from its colonial leaders. How their neighbors in Chad would react, was not yet determined....

Tehran, Ilkhanate

In response to the growing tensions in the world, Farkhad Tangri, Caliph of the Shiite church decided that the Islamic faith would best stand united, and the best method for doing so would be through the bond of marriage.

Image

Message from Khagan Farkhad Tangri, Caliph of the Shiite Church

Glory be to you, Caliph of the Sunni,

I write to you today with a mighty proposal. In these dark times the world seems to be facing, even after the peace made after the great war, the Islamic church stands fractured and divided by internal conflict. We are seen as vulnerable to the outside churches who await the chance to exploit our weakness as a divided faith.

I seek to remedy this situation. You and I are the two heads of the largest and oldest sects of Islam. To unify the church, I propose a marriage. A marriage between the two of us could unify the Islamic church into the powerful faith it deserves to be and unify the middle eastern region. Please, consider my request. I anxiously await your response.

Signed,
Farkhad Tangri,
Caliph of the Shiite Church and Khagan of the Ilkhanate

Wenquan/Antsirabe
Eva Koch/Chodren Dawa had saw little reception, so she decided to shake things up with a book. With her husband, Ferdinand Koch, they headed to Wenquan (native name: Antsirabe), mainly for inspiration. Eva wrote "Girl of the Springs" (泉城女孩, Quánchéng nǚhái) inspired by both the beauty of the town of Wenquan, and a Swiss book she read in the local library, Heidi.

In the "Girl of the Springs," Marie is a girl who raised by her aunt, Madeline in the (fictional) village of Celeste/Tiancun, after the early deaths of her parents, Joseph and Pauline. Madeline brings Marie to her grandfather, Louis, who has been secluded on a mountain since he has been at odds with the villagers and embittered against God for years. Louis briefly resents Marie's arrival, but the girl's evident intelligence and cheerful yet unaffected demeanor soon earn his genuine, if reserved, affection. Marie enthusiastically befriends her new neighbors, young Peter the goatherd and his mother, Arlene, and Marie's blind grandmother, Jeanne. With each season that passes, the mountaintop inhabitants grow more attached to Marie.

Three years later, when Marie turns 8, Madeline brings Marie to the city of Mahajanga to be a hired companion to a girl, Jin Wunai (金無奈), who is regarded as an invalid. Wunai is charmed by Marie's simple friendliness and naivety, delighting in the mishaps brought about by the lack of Marie's experience with city life. However, the Jin's strict housekeeper, Wang Yao-shou (王妖獸) views the household disruptions as wanton misbehavior, and places Marie under more and more restraint, and forcing her to convert to Buddhism. Soon, she becomes terribly homesick, growing alarmingly pale and thin, with her diversion being to learn how to read and write Chinese and French, the latter so she can read to her blind grandmother. Jin's own grandmother visits the children and becomes a close friend to Marie, teaching her that she can always seek relief from misery by praying to the Buddha or to God.

After months pass, the Jin household is brought near hysteria by night sightings of what appears to be a ghost. When Jin's father and his friend, Jin's doctor, keep awake one night to find out what is causing the disturbances, they see that the "ghost" is actually Marie, sleepwalking in her nightgown. The doctor sees that Marie is under a great deal of stress. He cautions Jin's father that if Marie is not sent home promptly, she may become very ill. Soon, a joyous Marie returns to the mountains, where she teaches Louis about the comfort of prayer. She reassures him that it is never too late to turn back to God. Her simple lesson prompts her grandfather to descend to the village and attend a church service for the first time in years, marking an end to his seclusion. He is heartily welcomed back by the priest and the villagers.

Marie and Wunai continue to keep in touch by sending letters, Marie sending letters in both Chinese and French and Wunai initially entirely in Chinese but increasing her usage of French as well. A visit by the doctor to Marie leads him to recommend that Jin Wunai visit Marie, assuring that the fresh mountain air and the wholesome companionship will do her good. Next year, Jin makes the journey from Mahajanga to Celeste/Tiancun, spending a wonderful summer with Marie. Jin became stronger on goat's milk and the mountain air, and one day, astonishes Marie by suddenly standing up to hug Marie, before sitting down. Peter becomes jealous of Jin and Marie's friendship and angrily tosses Jin's wheelchair down the mountain the next day, to it's destruction. Thus, Jin slowly starts walking and is gradually successful. Her father and grandfather are amazed and overcome with joy to see Jin walk unassisted, and her wealthy family promises care to Marie if there comes a time when her grandfather and grandmother no longer able to do so.

An epilogue shows 20 years later when Marie and Jin Wunai decide to move to Wenquan, becoming roommates, and bringing their families, so that Jin and Marie are no longer alone. Both are now bilingual in Chinese and French, and both Marie and Jin have kept their faiths: Catholicism and Buddhism respectively, and so have their families. Their children grow close together, raised with both faiths in mind.

This book quickly gets translated into French as "Marie: Fille des Sources." The book in Chinese is published both in traditional characters, as well as entirely in Pinyin to teach the Francophones how to read and speak Chinese. The traditional character version sells extremely well throughout the Empire, while Pinyin only does well in Madagascar. The French version does well among the Francophones, and they translate it into Dutch, Afrikaans, and English, while some Chinese translate it into Japanese.

As for Eva Koch, she converts to Catholicism, the faith of her husband and abandons Tibetan Buddhism. She is also now pregnant with fraternal twins: a girl and a boy.

Charleston, South Carolina

Seeking to clarify any misconceptions, end Rumite fearmongering, and to somewhat standardize the ideology, Hayim ben Tziyon publishes a book entitled the Zionist Papers, writing it in Hebrew and from there having it translated into other languages.

In the book, ben Tziyon establishes several basic items about Zionism. He immediately defines "the Land of Israel" that Zionists claim as the Jewish homeland, and draws a map outlining its borders, many of them based partially or totally based off the borders of Rumite elayets or vilayets. He says that Zionism as open to any ethnic Jew- including those who aren't religious Jews- and emphasizes that people from all parts of the spectrum can be Zionists so long as they believe that the Jews should return to the land of Israel. He declares that Zionism was a movement to right the wrongs done to Jews throughout the centuries, declaring it "a just and noble cause, based firmly in righteousness." In addition, he states that non-Jews in a State of Israel would be allowed to stay and live in peace, free from segregation and persecution. He also says that Zionism is incomparable with violence, and viciously condemns those who would use violence to fight for the recreation of Israel, saying that "they violate our basic principles and only do damage to the Zionist cause. He who would kill for Zionist goals can never call himself a Zionist." He calls it imperative that Jews and Zionists globally be free to be Jews and Zionists, and proud that they were Jewish or Zionist. He advocates cultural education in the history of the Jews and Israelites, and urges the establishment of expanded aid programs to assist Jews globally. And in what will become one of his greatest successes, he promotes the concept that Hebrew should be revitalized and made into a global language of the Jews.

Among the world's Zionists(at this point, the fair majority of Jews living outside of Rum and Crimea), the book is a massive success, and the ZWC's Knesset begins to enact several of ben Tziyon's proposal for Jewish cultural education, protection for Jews, Jewish aid programs, and the usage of Hebrew. The book also sells among non-Jews seeking to learn what Zionism is, and what it is about.

Rumite Empire

The publication of The Zionist Papers was met with mixed reception. The response wasn't violent, notably. The Jewish League of Rum assembled to discuss it -- the proposal of an Israeli state was met with opposition as a "violation of Rumite territorial boundaries", however, they did begin to agree on the matters of offering Jewish History in schools and universities, and Hebrew as an offered language. A publication by the JLR formally promulgated the Al-Başrah Accords, calling for the "recognition of Jewish history as part of Rumite history -- and the offering of part of the Zionist causes' beliefs as optional educational options; and the permittance of Zionists to speak of their cause without fear of prosecution."

However, when the Al-Başrah Accords were submitted to the Rumite Grand Assembly, but the Liberal-Conservative majority formally blocked the law from passing. Juno Thrakelis objected to the defeat of the law and said that "it will backfire." The Socialist Revolutionary Party and the People's Democratic Party both agreed to continue proposing the laws.

Spokesperson for the Conservative Party, Cevat Şakir Pasha, formally decried the Accords as "illegal, anti-Rum policies to satisfy the Zionist world order -- Emmanuel Carasso would be ashamed at our capitulation!"

Upon hearing this, Ferdinand Eichemann published a comic in Confederate and Rumite newspapers, showing an ugly ape-like Cevat Şakir Pasha banging a club called "Ultranationalism" loudly. Emmanuel Carasso's "representative spokesperson" spoke in Tunisia and condemned the speech as "non-representative of Carasso's anti-Zionist beliefs..."

Sun City, Ethiopia

A train rolled in from the coastline. Out of the train car emerged a young Turkish man. He was wearing a beret with the insignia of the Imperial Armed Forces Academy in Salonica, and was wearing military fatigues. This young man's name was Mustafa Kemal Efendi. The boy was only twelve years old, and had escaped from the Academy in the dead of night and sailed from Salonica to Ethiopia in search of Ferdinand Eichemann.

Walking through the city, he was accosted by a Japanese officer, who asked him for his papers. While the officer checked his papers, Ferdinand Eichemann had passed by. Asking the officer what was the matter, the officer explained that the boy did not have proper documentation and that he was alone, with no parents around. Eichemann tapped his finger on his chin and took the boy off the officer's hands and escorted him to his home.

Asking the boy his identity, the boy explained his situation. Eichemann frowned, "Running away from home does not make easy solutions, son."

Mustafa coughed and muttered, "I didn't want to go to the academy, sir... I wanted to meet you... sir. Your book -- The Great Dictator -- I read it... It's amazing. I was hoping to be your apprentice."

Ferdinand raised an eyebrow, "You gave up a military career to go off to be an apprentice to an author-magnate who lives in the mountains of a Japanese colony?"

Mustafa nodded and Ferdinand facepalmed, "How the hell did you even make it out here without being noticed?"

Mustafa rubbed his shoulder, "A Japanese trade-fleet captain... Ishiro something or another, he was leaving Salonica port when I escaped. He took me on board and we navigated to Eritrea on the Suez Canal. I asked him where Eichemann lived, and he said that Eichemann lived in Sun City, which was only a train ride from the coast."

Ferdinand sighed, "Alright, kid. You can be my apprentice... but you'll have to be a houseboy as well -- you'll need to pay your way here."

Mustafa bowed to Ferdinand and said, "Thank you, sir. I won't disappoint."

Little did Eichemann know, he would have a profound influence on one of Rum's most prominent 20th century politicians...

The ZWC announces it's support for the Basra Accords, but many non-Jews(particularly in Quebec and the rest of the CSA's sphere) are distracted by Eva Koch's new book.

Are you sure of this decision, sir? I am a woman past her prime, my loins cannot bear children as well, if at all. I will marry you if you are okay with that.

Ciudad de la Fortuna, Tawantinsuyu

Sapa Inca Maritza, in her eternal labour to gain glory and recognition as a monarch from the people and nobility of the Tawantinsuyu nation, sat quietly in her study. The Inca state had, for centuries, been a guiding figure in South America. In recent time, the neutrality of Tawantinsuyu and the political intrigue around her uncle and grandfather had displaced Tawantinsuyu's power at the hands of the Confederate States and Britain.

In a moment of strategic decision, she sent letters to the states of Central and South America.

Hello, my fellow Central and South American friends.

As you may know, I am the reigning Empress of the Tawantinsuyu Empire. An Empire that has been around for centuries, and was raped by Mother Spain. We have come to accept our status as members of the Hispanosphere, and we do not wish to see our nation fall in line with the foreign policies of nations with unsimilar cultural ideas and maxims. We are all members of the Organization of American States -- set up by the Confederacy to "repel" Europe from our shores.

I believe that Latin Americans should put their own international standing and diplomacy in their own hands. While we should remain OAS members, I believe we should assemble in Ciudad de la Fortuna to discuss a possible Federation of Latin American States, serving as a diplomatic, military and economic response to belief that we are backwards, breed with our llamas, and are generally incompetent in the face of the white man or yellow man.

If you find this amendable, I await your presence in my capital city.

I wish you all the best,
Maritza

Though the Consul is initially hesitant to do something that might possibly distance him from(and maybe even anger) his powerful northern neighbor, his advisors tell Carbajal that the people are desperate for Rio Grande to become more independent of the CSA, even if it means revolution. Carbajal then decides to respond to the Sapa Inka's letter in the affirmative, immediately.

Many books had been published and sold throughout the empire, but right now, the biggest page-turner was The Zionist Papers. This received a lot of support, especially among Conservatives led by a young MP named Arthur Balfour. He could not get the Liberals to support the measure however, and Ishikawa himself was still in New Orleans with his Foreign Secretary.

The British and Canadian delegations awaited the start of the conference, eager to showcase their proposals for the peace of the world. After the conference, both would head to the new Roman dominion of Nigeria.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Cleveland opened the conference thus:

"Welcome, one and all. It has been only twelve months since this world was prepared to tear itself into ribbons over the needs of nations to conquer, subdue, and destroy all who oppose them. Now, we stand here to ensure that this is the war to end all wars and to ensure that peace will rule the world with the creation of an instrument for guiding us all. Some time ago, I had proposed six points that the world should consider. Now that we are at peace, the governments of Britain, Canada, and all of the dominions have agreed on a seventh point, which we hope will guide us all.

"To ensure the peace of the world:

1. There should be covenants of peace, openly arrived at, after which there shall be no private international understandings of any kind but diplomacy shall proceed always frankly and in the public view.

2. Absolute freedom of navigation upon the seas, outside territorial waters, alike in peace and in war, except as the seas may be closed in whole or in part by international action for the enforcement of international covenants.

3. The removal of all economic barriers and the establishment of equality of trade conditions among all the nations consenting to the peace and associating themselves for its maintenance.

4. Adequate guarantees given and taken that national armaments will be reduced to the lowest point consistent with domestic safety.

5. A free, open-minded, and absolutely impartial adjustment of all colonial and territorial claims, based upon a strict observance of the principle that in determining all such questions of sovereignty the interests of the populations concerned must have equal weight with the equitable claims of the government whose title is to be determined.

6. The people of the Republic of the Rio Grande, Vilayet of Al-Mayiquh, and the Confederacy of Tehuantepec, whose places among the nations we wish to see safeguarded and assured, should be accorded the freest opportunity to autonomous development, and thus be evacuated by the Confederacy.

7. A general association of nations, victors and vanquished alike, must be formed under specific covenants for the purpose of affording mutual guarantees of political independence, world security and peace, and territorial integrity to great and small states alike.

"If we can agree to these terms," Ishikawa concluded, then we believe, and our Queen does as well, that peace and liberty will be secure around the world. If we fail here, then peace and liberty will fail. Let us begin this great task that stands before us."

"While the Canadian proposal contains several good points," President Hendricks said, "there is at least one obvious malevolence and several exceptions.

The malevolence is the specific reference to the Confederacy, Rio Grande, al-Mayiquh, and Tehuantepec. While there is some truth to the words that are being said, he ignores the fact that there are many other client nations and puppets in the world- the relationship Germany now has with Zanzibar and Denmark, among many others. The factionalism expressed by the targeting of the Confederate States does not belong at this Conference, nor at any point in time following the Treaty of Pearl Harbor. In addition, Canada has failed to recognize the steps already taken by the Confederacy to ensure the sovereignty of the aforementioned former puppets. If these nations should decide to remain close to the CSA, instead of rushing for another nation, then they will now do so of their own will. At present, neither the governments nor citizens of the Rio Grande, al-Mayiquh, and Tehuantepec have expressed that desire. If they should, them we will allow them to decide their fate for themselves. For the Canadian proposal to truly be one of unification and reconciliation, it must be applied universally, without exception, against all nations.

In addition, there are many points which are missing, and which we believe must be addressed. The Confederacy finds it more imperative that the world agree upon a litany of humanitarian standards. Protections for medical workers, humanitarian aid groups, civilian populations, and the press. A list of rights guaranteed to prisoners of war. The creation of a list of internationally agreed-upon human rights. A list of weapons, to be deemed cruel and unusual, never to be used by any nation. The protection of religious facilities, civilian neighborhoods, and historic landmarks. Rules banning the usage of torture. A codified procedure on how to surrender, and how surrendering troops should be treated. And the creation of an international criminal court to ensure that those who would violate these laws, now and in the past, be prosecuted and punished for their actions. These are all matters that cannot be ignored by any nation; these rules that we hope to propose and pass will help to ensure that wars are brief and minimally destructive, with the ultimate goal of ending conflict and injustice between nations worldwide."

The Japanese delegation nodded, before Michiko Adams stated, "Unrestricted access of the seas as well, I believe nations should have the right to close water ways it controls in war time. The Bosphorous Strait, Malacca Strait, even the Apaec Canal."

"Aye," Ishikawa said, "I remember your open telegram on the subject last year, Mr. President. I still have my copy of it back at Downing Street. And as Britain itself, though I cannot speak for all of her dominions, treats its prisoners fairly, I agree that we must do what we can to avoid the horrors carried out by Sir Cecil Rhodes down in South Africa. As for treating the ill, we British and the Canadians have our own Red Cross organisations. I wholeheartedly agree with you that the entire world should form an International Order of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent(in the case of Rum), with a single united standard for its workers and medical personnel. Your other proposals are also excellent, and the International Criminal Court can be part of the World Organisation which we hope to create."

Cleveland now rose. "I would like to address an offending passage in point six. It is true that there are many states that can be called vassals of greater states without necessarily being full-fledged colonies. We Canadians were part of such a system for many years until Britain granted her dominions political independence with the Westminster Statutes. Now, our bonds to assist each other are done because of the common brotherhood that we shar, and we hope that will be the same with all nations in the future. As for singling out the Confederate States, you must remember, Mr. President, that at the time of writing the original document, we were still at war with the CSA and wished to use them as an example. We do not wish to alienate our dear neighbour, and we can assure you now that all nations will be treated equally in this and all instances."

Cleveland then turned to Prime Minister Adams to address her concerns. "As the second point clearly states, Prime Minister, absolute freedom of the seas only applies outside of territorial waters. The nations of the world may still close the waters that they own in times of crisis."
