Sun Never Sets - RP Signups!

1837-2000

Introduction

It is June 20, 1837.

The sun casts light over London. In a way, metaphorical but unfitting. The public was in mourning; King William has passed, and his niece, Alexandrina Victoria, has ascended the throne earlier that day. Her coronation is in an age of turbulence; dangerous ideas are advancing ever so slowly through European courts, undermining the supposed godly wills of monarchs. Massive European diaspora has begun under a banner of stars and stripes; seeking liberty and riches. Great thinkers find the world on auspicious scientific epiphanies, bearing the fruits of life and death. European vessels glide along the crystal blue waters of the Pacific and Atlantic, claiming colonies and conquering natives in the name of God and King.

The eastern "barbarians" are given an ultimatum; advance or be eaten by overseas powers. The order of the old looks on wearily, as a tricolor rises from the ground, a majestic setting sun signifies the end of another day - a day of change and foreshadowing.

Theoretically, the sun never sets.

Putting aside what I think was a decently written introduction on my part, the overall goal is to develop your nation from 1837 to 2000, which so far, is when I think we will end it. Some goals consist of becoming an industrialised power, being at the forefront of science, maintaining stability (and possibly, status quo), and if interested, ruling the waves.

Playable nations will include most present nations as of June 20, 1837. So these include the great powers defined at Vienna in 1815 (the British Empire, France, Austria, Prussia, Spain, Russia, etc), nations with considerable power (such as Sardinia-Piedmont, Two Sicilies, Sweden, Portugal, Denmark, etc), American nations (USA, Mexico, Colombia, etc), Asian nations (Qing, Japan, etc), and African nations (Egypt). All nations playable & claimants are listed below, as well as the map.

-Nation:
The Ottoman Empire

-Ruler:
Ghazi Sultan Mahmud II Khan, the Caliph of Islam

-Capital City:
Kostantiniyye

-Industrialised?:
Yes. Large, steam powered textile factories in most major cities.

-Population:
About 32,000,000, based on studies, assuming that the census of 1831 was, as most historians agree, incredibly flawed.

-Army:
53,000

-Navy:
78 warships

-Goals:
1. Pay off debts, and create a strong economy that is no longer dependent on European manufacture.
2. Reform the military, by introducing more modern military standards.
3. Create a new and efficient government funded education system, and use it as a tool to tame the Balkans.
4. Retake Lebanon, Syria, Hejaz, and Palestine, and take control of the eastern textile industry.

-Starting Ideology:
Moderate Conservative (Tanzimat Reform Era)

-Historical Starting Position (Diplomatically):
Mixed relations with European powers, due to its important position and different religion. Frequently at war with Russia, for control of the Dardanelles and Bosphorus Rivers, although in good terms with Britain, France, and Germany, through trade and vital position in Europe's power balance. At war with the rebellious government of Eygpt. Internal discord and European Imperialism weaken the state's economy constantly.

1. Form a unified German nation.

Your test scores indicate that you are an open-minded ultra-progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a journalist. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a generally optimistic attitude towards humanity in general.
Your attitudes towards economics appear neither committedly capitalist nor socialist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as a liberal.
To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, a considerate idealistic egalitarian with many strong convictions.

I'm surprised no one has tried to take Russia. They are in a rather dominant position, having a huge army and access to both Europe and Asia.
