A Supernatural America (CLOSED)

Postby Damak Var » Tue Dec 24, 2013 12:59 am

Introduction

Magic exists. Along with all the other fabled creatures and beings out there. The magical world lives alongside the normal one, blending in yet having their own politics and affairs. They have fought wars among each other and have played key roles in the development of human civilization. In the centuries of history the magical beings have managed to form their own kingdoms. Many of them still quite medieval in nature as they are older than the human nations. Their borders are different from the political boundaries set by the humans of the time. Currently, there is peace among the kingdoms albeit a shaky one.

America

Like human civilization, the discovery of the new world brought with it new opportunities for expansion. The magical beings of the old world had to contend with the magic of the new, quite foreign to their own. As time passed and secret wars were fought, a new set of borders were developed. The American kingdoms are relatively new to the world. They are not as powerful as their more ancient counterparts in Europe, the Middle East and China. But they are still a force to contend with.

Alright enough of that. So the gist of this RP is that there is magic, magical beings as well. That being sorcerers, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, dwarves, fae and whatever you can think of. The magical world lives alongside the normal one in secret. Magical beings even take up human professions and own human businesses. But the one rule that all of the magic world follows (all sentient magical beings that is) is to keep their existence a secret and to minimize tampering with the development of human civilization.

There are magical nations with borders different from the ones in the normal world. Much of these kingdoms are still medieval in nature ruled by Kings, Queens and noble houses. They are completely independent sovereign nations in the magical world. Each kingdom has their own leaders and laws which govern the magical beings that reside in that nation. Crossing in between nations is allowed. This RP will take place in the United States, where there are eight different magical nations. You will be playing a magical character of a race of your choosing that resides in one of these eight nations. There's going to be a main plotline which you must take part in. But mostly it's sandbox.

Magical Nations of America

Refer to the map above. Keep in mind, these borders are approximates. It was easier to make them with RL state boundaries. First name is the formal name. Anything after that is informal.

1. The Pacific Freehold, the Pacific:

This nation originated as a refuge as fugitive magical beings fled from the old world and were steadily forced to move further west. Many magical beings since then have fled to the pacific freehold for its liberal ways. The Pacific Freehold has the greatest diversity of magical beings. They are a very peaceful nation that staunchly supports helping humans. Though it is a weak one. It is the first and only magical nation to not be ruled by a monarchy. Instead, a council of elders elected by its citizens governs the populace and establishes the laws. The High Councilor is Jack Finch, a warlock specializing in illusion magic. To make up for their disadvantaged position, the Pacific Freehold heavily utilizes human made weapons and technology even though they prove to be quite useless against many magical races. They also are the richest kingdom in America in terms of human wealth (which is different from the currency used in the magical world). Capital: Los Angeles

2. The Kingdom of Shaa Chagashi, Chagashi:

This is the only American magical nation that existed since before Christopher Columbus sailed to the new world. Native American magic is dominant here. Shaa Chagashi is ruled by the King Bodaway, a very powerful pyromancer. While Shaa Chagashi has a standing government, they are not as in control of the magical beings in their kingdom resulting in much lawlessness. Due to this, Shaa Chagashi has become a haven for the criminal contingent of the magical world. Capital: Las Vegas

3. The Kingdom of Palaer, Palaer:

This nation was established by werewolves that left Europe and Siberia. It is the largest of the American nations in terms of landmass and even extends into Canada. Many magical beings that are solitary in nature live in the Palaer. Their magical inhabitants are usually warlike and aggressive along with the Palaerian government itself. Many of the older beings were veterans of wars as far back as the Macedonian conquests of Alexander the Great. There is much feudalistic infighting between the werewolf ruling class and their allies. Though they are all loyal to the King of Palaer and will answer the call to arms should he give the order. It is ruled by King Braith, a werewolf that was once a Gaul chieftain that fought against the Romans. Capital: Chicago

4. The Queendom of Texas, Texas:

After the Spanish Inquisition, many witches fled to North America. They had to migrate once again from the Puritan Witch Hunts. Most witches finally ended up in Texas where they established their own nation that has grown very powerful. Here the witches are the ruling class where strict laws are enforced. Those who obey them however can expect much support and protection from the powers that be. In the 1930's, Texas went to war with the Palaer and conquered Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Queen Elena, a witch, rules Texas with a firm hand. Capital: Houston

5. The Kingdom of Faerie, Faerie

Faerie is as you may have guessed, is ruled by Faeries that are native to the area. At first the Faeries did what they could to keep other sentient magical beings out of their lands but the pressure was too much and they were forced to adapt. This nation attracts many powerful though peaceful magical beings. The name of the nation is misleading as the Faeries constitute only a very small fraction of the population. They live in harmony with the rest of the magical beings in Faerie who are treated fairly. Faerie has much in common with the Pacific Freehold in terms of political attitude except that it is ruled by a monarchy. King Gaern, a faerie is the current ruler who is known to be skilled at manipulating life energy. Capital: New Orleans

6. The Duchy of Avalia, Avalia, The Atlantic

The Kingdom of Alesia is an ancient superpower of the magical world ruled by sorcerers. It encompasses Britain, France, Germany and Italy. They are rivaled only by the Gaitanen Dynasty in China and the Kingdom of India. An offshoot line of the Alesian royal house, House Avalar was given a dukedom which they named after themselves in the new world. In the early 1800's, House Avalar successfully rebelled to establish their own sovereign nation though it is still called a dukedom. Avalia is ruled over by Duke Alaric Avalar, a formidable sorcerer. Avalia is arguably the most powerful American magical nation and certainly the richest in terms of magical wealth. This nation also maintains a good diversity of magical beings. Politically, Avalia has moderately strict laws and the most efficient government structure. Capital: New York

7. Cathar Florida, Florida

The Cathars of France were actually a growing faction of dark arts practitioners in the middle ages. Afraid of their power, the magical nations of Europe orchestrated the Cathar Crusade (1209-1229AD) to destroy them. It was almost a success and the Cathars were thought to be extinct. Instead, the Dark Lords of the Cathar went into hiding for centuries only to resurface in Florida. Cathar Florida is something of a rogue state in the magical world. It attracts many practitioners of the dark arts such as necromancers. As well as inherently evil magical beings like demons. The Dark Lord of the Cathar, Lord Ventrian rules over Cathar Florida like a totalitarian dictator. Cathar Florida is known to be the most adept in the dark arts of all the magical nations in the world, not just America. Capital: Miami

8. The Kingdom of Heselar, The Kingdom of New England, New England

The area of New England, called Heselar in the magical world was founded by vampires and exists today as a prominent vampire enclave. It is not a particularly powerful nation though can certainly hold its own evidenced by the brief war Heselar had with the Atlantic in the 1950's which ended in a truce. Heselar is an isolationist nation. Their disregard of human life is rivaled only by Cathar Florida. This attitude is shown in their laws that allow greater leeway in harming and killing humans. Heselar is ruled by King Richard York a vampire who was once Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England. Capital: Boston

More Tidbits You Should Know

1. There are magical nations outside of America, the RP will just take place in America. I introduced three others though they won't really be explored. All you know is where they are, that they are more powerful than any nation in America and that Avalia stems from Alesia.
2. In the magical world there is one currency that is used across all the magical nations. These are gold coins called Babylons that cannot be counterfeited. They come from the first great magical nation, Babylon which no longer exists. Though their currency is still used.
3. The magical nations do not live in another "dimension" than the real one if that's what you were thinking. They just have their own borders, laws and government separate to the human ones. More like societies. Magical beings also have to contend with human laws.
4. There are nonsentient magical beings. Beastiary.
5. There are specific places, usually bars run by the magical governments where you have to declare yourself when crossing the borders of the magical world.
6. I may have led you to conclude that certain magical nations only have one type of magical being. No! Each nation has a mix of them. Though certain beings may encompass a larger part of the demographic (vampires in Heselar) or have higher status (faeries in Faerie) or be the ruling class (witches in Texas) in a certain nation.

RP Rules
1. General RP Etiquette Applies.
2. You can reference other places, say your character was there but otherwise you cannot leave America.
3. You can cross into other magical nations. Just be mindful of the way things work in each nation as described by the OP.
4. You can have certain magical devices and weapons as long as they aren't overpowered.
5. You cannot have any technological device or weapon that does not exist in RL.
6. Unless it contradicts the OP, you can make up other facets of the world by referencing them in your APP or in the IC. I may reject your ideas though if I feel like it doesn't fit.
7. I know you have the urge to be a big bad villain. But you can't just go around slaughtering humans and committing mass murders. Each magical nation has laws in place against it meant to protect the secret of the magical society and to not upset the "balance". They also have ways of enforcing those laws.

Character Creation Rules
1. You can make your character of any magical race that has been referenced in RL popular fiction. Don't make up your own thing. That gets out of hand if you ask me. But there is so much out there so this is not limiting. Look at wikis for shows like Supernatural, Lost Girl, Merlin, Buffy the Vampire Slayer etc. There's also DC Comics, Tolkien, ASOIAF, Harry Potter, the Dresden Files etc. Try to be unique but if you really don't know a warlock or witch is the most versatile I think in what you can choose for powers.
2. Your magical being must have a way of blending in with the normal world and must be sentient.
3. You are limited to three useful powers. Do not try and go around this by choosing powers that are too over encompassing.
4. Use your judgment on what is overpowering and godmodding.
5. You may not make a famous character from history. Example: You're Alexander the Great, he turned into a vampire.
6. You cannot say that your character was behind or influenced any significant historical events. You may say they were a part of it. Exampe: Your character fought in the Civil War.
7. Your character may be from somewhere else but now lives in America and is a citizen of one of the eight American magical nations I described.
8. Your character may not have a significant position in government either in the magical world or human. They may work for the government however if its a low position in either worlds.
9. Powers must relate to your race. So if you're a vampire then you sure as hell don't have the power to make plants grow faster.
10. Weaknesses must be "applicable". Silver is a good weakness (werewolf). Nothing facetious like saying your character has "guilt" issues. Saying your character lacks a supernatural power is not a weakness. FOR EVERY POWER YOU HAVE, YOU MUST HAVE ONE WEAKNESS.
11. Have a detailed bio. Ten sentences is the standard.
12. Try to have a citizenship that most people have not chosen yet.

It has to have been at least referenced in RL popular fiction. There's so much out there.

Oh no.Don't create a particular character from folklore or legend. Create your own character. I mean you can't create your own magical race or species. It has to have been created already in popular fiction. You can make characters that are vampires, skinwalkers, demons, warlocks, faeries, succubus...whatever.

KwaDai:

1. Well if he can be really old it must match the lore of your race. Since he is a vampire, which are generally immortal he can be as old as you want. I would say try not to go over 3000 years.

2. Yes, any city within the chosen kingdom. Or if the character is a recluse that lives in the wilderness, no city is fine.

3. Skills are optional. But maybe he is good with a sword, whatever.

4. Bio must should be around ten sentences.

NS Nation Name:The Borderlands of Valida
Name:Unknown (he's simply known as the Night Hunter)
Age:Unknown
Sex:M
Race (Vampire, Warlock, Faerie etc.): Demon
Citizenship (Magical): The Duchy of Avalia
Residence (exact city unless your character lives in the wilderness): New York
Powers (3 max):Camoflauge, super human physicality.
Skills (Optional 3 max):Expert with a spear gun, can jump pretty high, and really scary

Bio:While his name and age is unknown, he was originally a soldier, that through his years of service, grew a particular blood lust. After the murder of about a dozen innocent families, he was jailed for ten years and then executed. When he was in hell, a particular demon found his skills quite interesting, and made a deal with him. The soldier offered his soul, and he was brought back with unusual powers. He has a great interest for the hunt, and will attack some armed civilians or gangsters within contact. Sometimes he's been known to wipe out entire buildings full of people. Most deaths are caused by impalement to the wall, or some with broken bones.
Notes (Optional): He's been known to antagonize his victims
No one has seen the Night Hunter's true form, mainly due to him being invisible. Those who have were immediately eviscerated on sight.

Valida: some questions first. so you have to kill? Why would the magical authorities tolerate your existence? Avalia is powerful. They would have sent you back to hell a long time ago or will soon. Also read 7 of the RP rules.

Then I would have to word it right so it'll be three powers. The species I picked naturally has four powers, but I can work with it.

1452
NS Nation Name: Utceforp
Name: Ninzu
Age: 7,000+ years old, she appears to be somewhere around 16-22.
Sex: Female
Race: Abgallu (Functionally human aside from some scales on her elbows and back, tiny bumps on her neck that are vestigial gills, and the fact that she doesn't blink)
Citizenship (Magical): Palaer.
Residence: Homeless wanderer.
Powers (3 max): Immunity to old age, and the ability to recover from and supernaturally quickly heal from wounds, even fatal ones.
Skills (Optional 3 max): Theoretical (IE, she's not trained in them, but knows what someone trained in them can and will do) knowledge of several fighting styles, and a small amount of knowledge of pretty much anything that existed before the year 1950, and a few things afterwards. (When you're immortal, you have to find things to do)
Weaknesses: Both of her supernatural abilities (eternal youth and healing) are reliant on Utnapishtim's plant of life, a magical flower native to Kuwait that only grows at the bottom of rivers and only survives because Ninzu has transplanted it to the bottom of a river in America. Without eating the plant every month or so, she turns into a functionally normal, mortal human being. Speaking of which, she is significantly lacking in offensive power. Without a weapon like her axe, she has no way to hurt somebody besides, you know, punching them.
Bio: According to legend, the gods of Mesopotamia were tasked by Abzu to keep the cosmos working, but refused to do so. Abzu, in his anger, threatened to destroy the world. Enki subdued him and made him into a magical subterranean sea that fed springs of fresh water. Tiamat, Abzu's wife, and her son Qingu took revenge, but the god Enlil defeated them. So, needing someone to keep the cosmos working, the rather hypocritical gods, on the advice of Enki, decided to create humanity to do it for them. They executed Qingu, and used his blood and clay to create the first humans. Enki created the Abgallu, nine sages who taught the early humans how to be civilized.

Yes, nine.

This is where Ninzu enters the story. Clad in a robe made from the skin of a fish, Enki brought the eighth Abgallu, Ninzu, from the Abzu, made from clay and Qingu's blood, just like Adapa and the first humans were. He then brought the ninth Abgallu, Lugestu, from the Abzu as well.

But unlike the other Abgallu, Lugestu had a bit of Qingu left in him. While it was debatable how much of him was human and how much was god, as he was an artificial creation, he was roughly two thirds divine, granting him great strength. But he was still mortal, and therefore would one day die.

Ninzu and Lugestu accompanied Adapa, one of his fellow Abgallu, to the city of Eridu, and advised the king Alulim when the region was first civilized. When the kingship passed from Alulim to Alalngar, Lugestu began to plot. He had learned that he had been made from Qingu early in his life, and he viewed himself as Qingu reborn, which may or may not have been true. In either case, he decided to spite the gods in any way possible. He also managed to convince Ninzu to agree to his plan, and the two began to plot. The council of the gods had decreed that the kingship stay in Eridu, but through their machinations the kingship was passed to Bad-Tibira. Unfortunately, Lugestu did not wield as much influence in Bad-Tibira as he believed, and En-men-lu-ana became king, not him. The gods were angered by Lugestu and Ninzu's scheming, and in a fit of rage Enki destroyed all of the tablets with their names on them.

Humbled by his failure, Lugestu realized that to truly gain power, he would need more time than he had. So he went into hiding from the gods, searching the land for a way to preserve his life. Long before Utnapishtim, the sole mortal survivor of the great flood of the region, was even born, he travelled to the riverbed in Dilmun and managed to retrieve the immortality-granting plant that lived there, burying a seed in the ground for a failsafe.

Now immortal, Lugestu began to plot his revenge. He influenced the council of citizens that advised the king of the city-state of Uruk, and fought for them against other cities of the region.
