The Nightblade Chronicles: Chapter One

The Nightblade Chronicles
Chapter One:
Baptism of Fire

In the year 200 NCT, the Kingdom of Gratia was set up. It was originally ruled by a kind leader, who worked to make sure his people were safe and happy. It was his goal to see Gratia as the most prosperous nation on the planet. This was not achieved in his lifetime, but it was achieved by his great-great-grandson.

Gratia continued to prosper for many generations. Everyone was happy in Gratia, especially in the capital city, Populaire. All was well, until the reign of King Erix IV. That was when the masked man known only as Red Death appeared. Red Death began with strategic attacks, destroying military bases and large farms. Eventually, Red Death attacked the castle, taking over and killing King Erix IV and his entire army single-handed.

Red Death was able to do this because he is a powerful magic-user. He used his spells to literally create troops from certain materials (i.e. ancient armor, animals, etc.) and has used their undying loyalty to quell any rebellions. He has also shown his power through the executions, usually summoning creatures to devour them, using lighting, or simply performing something similar to that scene in 'Temple of Doom' where that cult sends that man to Hell.

The nature of magic is just that, nature. Some people are born with more sensitivity to nature and the universe. The weaker ones use this to compliment ranged weapons or melee combat, while the stronger ones can create fire, ice, etc.. The strongest can cast spells and curses and then there is Red Death, who can manipulate reality to an extent. He's basically seen as the omnipotent, tyrannical God of these people.

He has been in power for seventy years, and he shows no signs of aging. Who will save save the people from this madman? You will, by helping forge the resurrected organization known as 'Nightblade'.

For the past ten years, a popular, underground movement had taken effect. It was a rebellion that almost succeeded, or so it had appeared, that had been called 'the Gratia Inquisition'. In all reality, Red Death had played a hand in inciting and helping with the success of the rebellion. They had been pawns in his game in an effort to show his power. Now, in middle of Populaire, the five leaders of the Inquisition were chained to a podium. It was time once again for Red Death to show his power.

He walked up onto the podium, glancing over the crowd from behind his mask. Unbeknownst to him, the key to his downfall stood dormant in the crowd, themselves not knowing their role in his undoing. He smiled evilly to the crowd, then returned his gaze to the prisoners.

"None in all of Gratia will ever again rise against my rule." he said, loudly, "I show you the five, pathetic cowards that led this rebellion against me. Watch as they cower! Watch as they tremble before my might! Now watch, as they die at my hand!"

The crowd was silent as he walked to the first leader from the South, a red-headed girl by the name of Rebecca Grean. She whimpered as he looked her up and down, and then stood back. He raised his palm towards her, and soon, fire began raining down from the heavens. Every flame that fell, landed on her. This continued for about five minutes, until there was nothing left but ash.

Red Death then walked to the next leader, the leader of the Western rebellion, a young man with a thick, Western (Australian) accent. He cursed the King and blasphemed him. Red Death simply smirked and raised his hand. Waves rolled in the lake behind the five, and soon, the water had risen to the platform. It engulfed the man, who's name was Steve Cochran, and churned about him until he was nothing more than a wrinkled, dead prune. Red Death smiled as the water receded back to the lake.

He then moved on to the leader from the East, a man named Lao Trent. He raised his hand and the wind started spinning about the man. Lao screamed as his limbs and skull was slowly ripped apart by the tremendous wind, his blood splattering onto his neighbors. The crowd let out gasp, and lightning cracked over head, silencing them. Red Death moved to the Norther Leader, Joshua Magana, raised his arm and smirked as the world opened up beneath the rebel and only that rebel. Joshua's scream was heard for what seemed like hours until finally, the evil king closed his fist, the world closing up.

Red Death then moved on to the leader of the Rebellion as a whole, and the one who had been based in Populaire. His name was Erik Ferrmont. He was a generally charismatic man, and was not only the leader but also the face of the Gratia Inquisition. Red Death had chosen him to lead for one, very important reason:
He was a hotheaded young idiot.

"Red Death!" Erik yelled, "You may kill us, you may kill a thousand more! But the people will not rest until your tyrannical reign is ended an-"

Before he could finish, the sky opened up into a big, black swirling mass, known as 'the Void'. Red Death smiled evilly as a great beast emerged from the Void, and devoured the man. The beast was nine feet tall, very muscular, and and covered in fur. It had goat-legs and feet, with horns and claws. It ripped Erik open and devoured him, slowly but surely. It then let out a roar and returned to the Void.

"And thus ends this demonstration of what happens when anyone attempts to stand against King Red Death!" Red Death yelled, lightning cracking.

Near the back of the crowd was an old man with a long, white beard. He had in his hand a wooden staff, and about his body was grey beggars clothing. He shook his head solemnly and shrank into the crowd.

From the crowd, Daniel looked at the summary execution with a bit of remorse. If only a man with such power would not have decided to fall into corruption, into desire...how much he could have built and done for everyone, but yet the desire was his ruin. He was only a phantom, hiding behind a mask for everyone.

" You may think you bring fear, but in reality that's your prison, a mask so that you cannot be yourself, but a tyrant living in a senseless opulence... " He whispered to himself. He had been an evil ruler too, granted, but he always respected him loyal subject, never treated them as pawns, working as a leader and not as a master to them. He always hated when evil guy wasted their potential in this way, as it has always be his firm belief that a strength of an overlord is in the respect the subjects had for him...and around him there was only fear. If he would die here and now, people would transform him in a puppet to scare kids, as this he truly was.

But, even if he wanted to pull him down, he couldn't do it alone. It would be too much meddling with this dimension to just wage war to it. The show he pulled just now had been foolish: all he showed up is that there is people ready to rebel to him, that there is an opposition. Another mistake of a bad overlord, the need of enemies to rule peacefully, now he created a blade that was only logical to put inside him. Just a question to find it.

(sorry for the somewhat small-ish post, not many to talk to right now)

Jace looked upon his old teacher with a mixture of love and hate. This was the man responsible for his father's death, but then again, he barely knew his father. Jace was pissed at Red Death, "he was playing them the whole time" Jace repeated in his head. Jace knew what Red Death was capable of though. He would have to bide his time, find people to help him.

He a promising looking man, who had a remorse in his eyes.
"Heyo!" Jace shouted at him, his fury barely masked.
Alas yonder woman, damn you tempt me with thy saucy bosom
thus methinks I shall bestow my codpiece in thee & make naughty love to my lady all night
Please haste hither & quench this torment fairest maiden

Populaire

A few paces from the man known as Daniel, unbeknownst to Astarius of course; stood the young Auditore. He wore his pure black hood up obscuring his face, the show was gruesome and drew no delight from him. He glanced left and right and made his way through the crowd, moving to his right. Towards the man known as Daniel, he looked at Daniel and passing by whispered, "Perhaps its time for change."

It wasn't directed at Daniel per say but he felt like he had to tell someone that did not serve Red Death. Auditore had lost his parents in a riot brought about by the tyranny of Red Death, he was young and vengeful. He was the inheritor of a large fortune but wealth meant nothing to him; only vengeance for the way Gratia has become. The senselessness of it and the squalor it has become. Gratia must change...or perish. The latter was a haunting thought but with Red Death at the helm it looked like the Kingdom was veering that way.

So as he walked down the street away from the murders, at least that's what Auditore thought of that scene. He looked at his palms and willed the two Hidden blades that sprung out. The blades gleamed but caught no reflection, like a paradox not supposed to be. They were family heirlooms from centuries prior, he did not know of their origin but they were of the same manner as his Grandfathers Sword and other equipment. Of which they were his Grandfathers before him and so on back up the line.

Daniel was not a fool, he sensed the rage and noticed the other man getting closer to him. He quickly said " Not here, not now. It would be as foolish as to declare your intention now. "

He was glad to see that there was people feeling so angry at that scene that want to show their disagreement, but another word or look there and Red Death could notice them. He didn't want to understimate his enemy now that he choose one.

He felt bad for the executed too, it was cruel how he played with them...or maybe not. If there was unrest, he would have done the same, but just because he would see the unrest as a trie betrayal, not the wish of freedom the ones were asking.

But they were foolish too, they didn't fell because being used, they understimated their opponent, didn't realized where to truly strike. Would he do that? NO.

That was the major problem: if he wished, he would guide those to victory, but then? He could not guide the nation, they first needed a leader, then a champion.

As Daniel and company exchanged a few words, he most likely could feel the eyes of the old man on him. This is because they were. Across the way, amongst the throng of the crowd, the old man stood there, assisted by his staff. His eyes were locked on Daniel, and a warm smile on his old, withered face and a light twinkling in his eyes.

He gestured with his head slightly to follow him, and waited for them there.

Red Death looked out over the crowd, not noticing those that would soon be the key to his demise. He smiled as his subjects cowered away, and soon left for his spire of a castle.

Elena watched the execution (Really, a murder scene) with muted disgust. Yet another show of power from the 'glorious' leader of 'Gratia', really a shell of what it once was - and what it should, could, and will be.

She shook her head, starting to turn away as it finished. However, an odd sensation, as if someone besides the Red Death (Or less printable variations of that name, most of which were flying through Elena's head at that exact moment) was watching her.

She shivered, looking around for the cause of this sensation.

Auditore listened to Daniel and nodded quickly, knowing what the man meant. So Astarius moved away between a stack of Barrels and the entry to a popular Tavern. Auditore watched closely, waiting for the crowd to dissipate and see who stayed. The hardy would undoubtedly stay or make themselves more evident to those whom would know to look. Auditore eyed a suspicious old man on the other side of the square with a curious face. Hadn't he seen the old man before? Was he there the whole time? Who was he?

"I'm gonna keep an eye on this one." said Astarius in the clipped accent of the merchandizing class. The old man looked out of place; but at the same time hidden, as if know one would know he was there but able to be seen. Why?

The wise old man only smiled at Astarius, and then turned to Elena, and walked towards her. As he made his way, slowly but surely, to her, he made deliberate motions with his hands for Daniel, Astarius and Jace to follow him. As the old man neared her, he placed an old, weary hand on her shoulder.

"Follow the night, and take up the blade." he said simply, turning towards an old, abandoned building not far away with a strange symbol carved above the door.

The old man started for it, his steps weary with age and travel. Whoever he was, it was obvious that he had been all over Gratia more than once. The man stopped by the door and turned toward the future heroes of Gratia, the future slayers of Red Death.

Alakin stared at the execution and shook his head.
"You know," walking as he continued mumbling to himself, "it's not smart to execute in public. It just stirs up rebellion."
Speaking of rebellion, and therefore strange and suspicious things.. he thought as he saw a group of people walking towards an old, deserted building, people dont just get in groups to go building-exploring. Perhaps I shall follow.
So, the man followed very obviously. If there was a negative intent there, he would decide what to do with them then-though the motely group looked like not much trouble, to be honest.

Elena nearly jumped when the man put his hand on her shoulder, but then watched and listened as he turned towards the building. It was an old, abandoned accident waiting to happen, and she wanted no part in it, especially since this was an old man she didn't know in any way, shape, or form. However, she couldn't help but trust him for some reason. He didn't seem the type to be terribly dangerous, unless you yourself were dangerous to others. Elena wasn't dangerous to others! Was she? She shook her head, unsure what she could be in trouble for on the off chance he was one of the Red Death's spies, then followed him to the door.

As they followed, the man opened the door, gesturing inside. He himself entered first, the symbol above the door becoming slightly more distinct. On the inside of the old, decrepit building, it was quite new and clean. On the walls were portraits of ancient heroes, along the floors were red carpets, the walls a lovely wood. There were tables, chairs and a large, crystal chandelier. The man walked to the far end of a table-top map of Gratia. He waited for the others to join him around the topographical map of their homeland.

Resting his staff by the map, he smiled reassuringly to those that had followed. They were the key to Red Death's well... death.

Daniel was surprised when the old man extended his invitation to him from the crowd. He felt rhe old guy to be more than he looked...and that didn't explained why he invited him.

To people with sensitive powers in this dimention, he would appear so dark that they would usually avoid them. The man could not knew he was a guardian, that knowledge was not of this dimension...then why?

Could it be a trap or a foolish invitation? Daniel however saw a familiar face in the crowd: one of his shattered met her more than once elsewhere, but she could not be the same right? That was not the point to get closer to those who had only a face of someone he knew indirectly.

Elena Solovyov. A name strangely always closer to chaos, in good and ba ways. Maybe this was the curse of the shattered, as some of them loved their Elena's, and although they could not transmit love, memories gave caring.

Astarius walked slowly into the building, following the others closely; not entirely sure if he could trust them. He kept himself at the ready, just incase he needed to make an impromptu escape and if need be...flee the Kingdom. However that thought lurched his stomach as Gratia was his home, its always been his home. He moved towards Daniel and Elena and gazed at the map of Gratia; it was alluring this meeting.

'Who are these people.' Atarius thought to himself.

No doubt Basil, his Butler and Cassilia, his Head Maid were looking for him. A Wealthy member of society just doesn't go missing, plus the rich would no doubt be closely watched as they could fund rebellions better than peasents ever could. True his family had a large fortune and wealthy holdings acquired over generations of entrepeneuring heads of household; Patriarchs and Matriarchs alike. Yes, the Auditores were known for their diverse merchandizing in just about anything legal. Well the legal documents Auditore knew how to forge if need be, his father taught that art to him as Gratian custom agents could be rather...persistant.

"Follow the night, and take up the blade." the man said simply, looking at those who had entered, "That was the motto of the ancient organization that existed long before Gratia. The ancient organization, that was known as Nightblade. They fought against the evils of this world as long as they could, until they realized that there was only one day to fight the cruelness of the world.

Those ancient heroes, whose portraits you see here, found the most selfless man they could find in the corrupt world and used him to set up the Kingdom of Gratia. For centuries, they were the Protectors of Gratia and the Heroes of the Gratian people. They fought for truth and justice, never waning to the dark impulses. Eventually, the day came that Nightblade was no longer needed, and they disbanded, swearing that should they ever be needed again, they would follow the night and take up the blade."

The man looked down at the map, as he finished telling the ancient and famous legend of Gratia. His eyes drifted to five different points on the map with tall towers. There was one in each region, and one in Populaire. He sighed as his eyes returned to those around him.

"They are now needed again, YOU are now needed again." he said, "I have watched you for some time now, and I know now that you are the ones who will recreate the Nightblade, and defeat Red Death. This is no rebellion, it is a resurrection."

He knew that there would be comments, scoffs and mocking, so he paused to let them pass, and to let his words sink in.

And the scoffing started from Elena. "Recreate Nightblade? An organization for good, with Red [OOC Edit: No.] leading the country? The years must have made you senile, old man. I mean, sure, I'm pretty powerful myself, but going up against Red Death? No thank you."

"Red Death is nothing but a manipulator of magic. He has no true power, he steals it from the earth using ancient symbols. A fear monger that cares only for himself. His reign as King is over. I can show you how to defeat him, if you choose to trust me, young Elena. It is time for him to pay for his crimes." he said, then smiled, "At least you lot believe that Nightblade had existed. I had expected THAT to be my biggest trouble. I have traveled all over Gratia, and most do not believe that Nightblade ever truly existed."

The man glanced back to the map, which, when looked at closely had the symbol which was above the door on it. The way the the Great River wound and interacted the Three Rivers Minor caused the effect.

"He keeps his power secret, but I know how to drain him of it." he said.

He swung his arm over the map.

"What do you see?" he asked, "What do you see in each region and in the capitol? What has no one ever thought of attacking? What were his first true targets?"

Daniel laughed " What, you are telling me no one figured out until now that those towers are power collectors? Really? I mean, why building one at each cardinal point if... "

Daniel realized that ACTUALLY no one figured out. For him, feeling dark energy was a joke, so it would have been simple to see them with the help of Crow assistance. But the others could not see that.

He might have just made a mistake on his true identity.

" However, this doesn't answer my question on why we should trust you, and it's a no brainier that if you want to destroy an empire you have to dismantle it from the borders..."

"My only answer to your question is faith." he said, gesturing to a painting of a male hero named Fai The, "Yes, he turned the military outposts into giant magic conduits, channeling them into himself. And think about it, with Red Death in control, there is nothing to live for here, so you have truly nothing to lose."

The man smiled reassuringly, looking back to the map.

Alalkin followed the rest inside after a short delay and saw them gathering around a map. Nothing hostile was done. And this looked interesting.
He crossed his arms and said, "So what is this all, exactly," gesturing and wandering about, "what are we doing here?"
The older man, wizened and ancient, seemed to be controlling it all.
Why are they all here? What the hell is happening in this place?

Astarius listened intently to the talks around him and looked at his Sword in its sheathe. Past down through the ages, a weapon of virtue, never drawn in his life-time or any of his forbearers by his reckoning for ill. It was a blade knowing only the light of the world, serving good and never evil and its ilk. He could picture it now; its shining blade alight with the flame of the sun. Astarius looked up into the old mans eyes and saw the truth there that any man or woman could find if you knew where to look. They say eyes are gateways to the soul....and all he saw there in the old mans eyes was a kindling. The kindling of hope, like a Phoenix from the flames.

"Old man, I may not be the eldest, nor the most magically inclined, or the most learned*, but you have my Sword." He knelt down on one knee and proffered his fathers Sword to the old man like a Knight of old. His Grandfathers sword had a hilt of gold with wrapped silver around the black leather hand grip. A pair of eagles on each side of the hilt wrapped around the base of the blade. The blade gleamed even though it was stark black, as if it sucked in the light around it and if placed in shadow, blended in. A ruby was at the base of the pommel, it was a beautiful and still practical weapon.

"I choose for better or for ill to my health that I will follow the night and pick up the blade." spoke Astarius. He was a man of action, not scoffing. As a young boy his mother, father and grandparents would tell him wild fairy tales of great Heroes of old. Of great heroes wielding magic, of those using blades and weapons that blew children's minds. Red Death was the cause of his family grief's, he'd pay for the horrors he has committed thrice fold.

The man smiled, then looked to the others, "If the rest shall join us, then Red Death shall be defeated and Gratia returned to its former glory."

The man turned to a weapon rack and began working quickly. When he was done, he walked over to the five with four weapons. He laid the weapons on the table and then turned to each new member in turn.

"Young Mercury, it appears you have your own weapon." the man said, so he turned to Elena, "For you, I have a Shaska, augmented with the Stone of Pyros. It will allow fire to flow through the blade. It will benefit your magic well."

He picked up a dagger, and turned to Astarius, "This dagger is augmented with the Stone of Movement. It will allow you to control heavier object using only your mind. It isn't much good in battle, but it is efficient."

Turning towards Jace, he pulled out a broadsword, "This weapon, too, has been augmented with the Blade of Pyros. And for you, an axe augmented with the Stone of Strength. It will enhance your.. well.. strength.."

After he had handed the axe to Alakin, he returned to the map, and pointed to the tower in the South, "This is the first of the towers which must be defeated. It is the Spire of Ka, the Tower of Fire. Destroy it, and he would have no control over the heat. Anyone with control over fire, their power would be enhanced while there."

Jace was a bit surprised at the old man's knowledge, which led to suspicion. How was the old man supposed to know all of this? Nonetheless, he wanted revenge against his mentor.
"Before I can pledge my metal to you, I need to ask a question." Jace said, suspicion highlighting his face.
"How do you know all this? I was Red Death's prodigy and even I only know half of this information!" he said, suspicion drawn across his face still.
