The Lamp of Asiran: Part I The Feast of the Tail (IC/Closed)

The Lamp of Asiran: Part I The Feast of the Tail

You are all currently residing in the land of Jenardus. The citizens are all tent dwellers who are at home with moving around and unsettled by staying in one place. This is a great melting pot/medeival times square. It is a scoundrel's haven and a merchant's dream; yet a heart-stopping nightmare for the unwary soul. Most travel in groups and keep kids by their side. In droves they come to possess the things they cannot find elsewhere, and to rid of the things nobody elsewhere wants. It also boasts of a strong naval port and navy. They are never there to assist anyone but anybody may use the farside of the overly elongated dock as long as they provide their own vessel.

One such craft is taking advantage. The Devil's Fin, a modest cog will be sailing from Jenardus to Ferrai for The Feast of the Tail. This is a celebration of the coronation of King Krolos. There will be a banquet with a variety of food from all the surrounding cultures, spiritual re-eneactments of the underworld, games (for adults and children alike) and booths where you can buy, sell or trade many items of worth. Anyone who gives of himself or his belongings will be free to join. One may set up a booth as long as it is authorized before you enter the main gate.

The crew of The Devil's Fin is as follows:
Adolfo Fry - Captain, owner
Chi Porfirio Holloway - Quartermaster
Cristobal Alonzo Cantrell - Sailing Master
Cyril Shane Alston - Boatswain
Diego Whitaker - Carpenter
Felipe Pittman - Rigger
Gus Rice - oarman
Harris Leandro Cunningham - oarman
Kip Hardy - merchant - silk,linen, furs
Octavio Weber - cook
Robby Marion Neal - merchant - perfumes, incense, animal statues
Shad Warner - merchant - chocolates, Bivian Wine

The three merchants, Octavio, Robby, and Shad, are petitioning people to tend oar and provide security for their captain and his ship. This not only assures a successful voyage but secondly, will extend into the reaches of Ferrai, a not much known about kingdom of men, hill giants and half-giants. Although some have returned with good words for their journey unto Ferrai, there have been rumors contesting otherwise. The merchants rove about tents, rug displays and stands, inquiring quite loudly.

Jenardus was surely not the most perfect place in the world; Daniel could say this much. It was a place where only the toughest live well and where the weakest usually serve them.

He tried to be tough but that didn't end well...until he opened his mouth. Apparently, there was another type of strength rather than muscle, and that make him decide to become a bard, a teller of stories that he survived with legendary heroes. If you hung out with tough people, you have to get respect right?

The problem was that there was no story he could tell about except the one he heard once about the best swordsman in the world...but he didn't travel with him, so it was kinda useless. He needed adventure, maybe something risky but with a chance to be profitable.

The occasion came when he heard about the Devil's Fin crew searching for protection, although they were already a good sized crew, he heard. They were going to the lands of Ferrai, dangerous and mysterious for many, rich of treasures for others; the perfect adventure to create a great tale.

He didn't waste time and started searching for information to enlist himself for the travel.

Isaiah had heard of the ship moving out to Ferrai soon, and, well, he himself was not very socially-minded. It was fairly hard to be such, when you were riding on a horse with not only a lance, but a mace and a sword mounted behind you as well. He had noticed in this society that not many people tended to ride horses, or carry more weapons than a small sword, or a dagger.

Ah well. He stepped up to the merchant inquiring everyone - probably a furs merchant, or maybe cloths? - and, dismounting with a slight flourish - hey, he couldn't help himself - spoke quickly to the man. "I'll go along with you to Ferrai, 'long as I get somewhere t' sleep.. Ye'll need a good fighter - whether that's me and my horse here, or some two-bit ruster with his pop's shortsword."

Leading her horse in hand, Llarissa walked through the sleazy port town, in awe of it all. Until then, she had lead a rather sheltered life away from the horrors of the world. So this, even this depressing place, held her enraptured. Of course, she was not so foolish as to lose herself in the sights and, as per her parents' suggestion, she held her longspear tightly, and displayed as threatening an expression as she could muster, hoping to convince the people that she was not a young girl but, instead, a tough mercenary chick. She wore her hair tied back in a knot in order to proudly display her pointed ears. Elves aged slowly, and everyone knew this. As far as they knew, she could easily be two or three hundred years old and full of years of battle experience. She even took extra care to walk through mud puddles on the way into to town to make herself look more dirty and travel-worn.

Of course, despite all this, Llarissa had no real idea of what she should do with herself or where she should go. She wanted excitement and adventure, and she knew that the world was filled with such things. The only problem was that it was filled with so much that she was just kind of overwhelmed and didn't know where to start. So, she figured that she should ask around and see what's available. Heading to one of the tents that appeared to be a sort of makeshift tavern, Llarissa tied her horse outside and scanned the area. Finding a man sitting alone at the end of the bar, she walked over and laid four coppers on the table.

"Here, let me buy you another ale, and maybe we can talk a little."

Solion Luminor prepared Create water, Mending, Light, Doom, Summon monster I and Burning hands this morning.

Solion walked to the ship. So this was the one that he was meant to be looking after? It didn't look that much; the Indomitable was better and it had managed to get itself blown up. He sighed. He supposed that he should talk to the captain.

He walked up to the ship, and tried to look official, hoping that someone would initiate a conversation. Solion Luminor was not good at initiating conversations. At the very least, the symbol of Sarenrae should be enough to make him noticable, and the captain should have known that he was coming.

At least, he hoped so.

Daedhinen patted the neck of her horse as she held the reins tying them to the horse fence outside the small ring of tents that served as a tavern in this forlon place. Her ride from the city was long, slow and tiring. She was not much of a rider, and was afraid of falling her grey mare the entire way, so her refusal to push the mount further than slow pacing forwards had added several hours to the already long journey. She was thirsty, and hungry, and entirely covered in dust and mud, or at least her human-made cloak was. It was a heavy thing made of fur, rude and vulgar, but it served its purpose, which was to hide both her features under the hood, and her lithe body underneath it. Only her rather fine boots betrayed that she wa not another dust covered beggar, but even those were covered in sand and dust too, enough as to hide its embellished manufacture. Her elven clothing was way lighter, better made and even more resilent, but after several months in the streets of the metropolis it was already showing signs of decay and neglect, even although Daedhinen always took pains to try to preserve and clean her attire. After all, the clothes were a memento from home. One of the few she had left. She touched the hidden pocket where she kept her purse, with the few platinum coins she had left. Those were also a memento, so she made a mind to not spend them as long as she could afford.

She finished to tie the reins, securing her mount alongside others, and took a glance at the patrons. Most were the normal guys and wenches you could find in any tavern in any city, although they looked more....Colorful, but also poorer. Her glance went all across the place until she found a girl that flashed in an entirely different way than the rest of the clients. She had just took a seat at the end of the bar, alongside a man that was alone there. She was not hooded, proudly displaying pointed ears that shown her elven heritage. Heritage? No, this girl was not one of those half-blood mongrels she had met in the metropolis. She was also an elf! An elf like Daedhinen herself! And by the looks of it, the girl was not interested in hiding this fact. The girl had a spear, a long spear like those used back home to spit the wild boars the hobgoblins sometimes used as hounds. However, she was wearing no armor. Probably she had it stashed somewhere. Was she some kind of elven guard? Or was she one of those adventurers that roamed the world?

Daedhinen checked the long sleeves of her clothes, feeling her leather bracers on her forearms and the steel darts hidden inside. She decided to leave her bow carefully tied to her saddle, but shifted her feet inside her boots to reassure her both daggers were still safely tucked inside each boot. She pondered about taking her sword around, as she more likely would present a less savory target to any kind of criminal or drifter around. She already knew that in any place like this, the mere presence of a weapon was enough as to dispel most of the problems. Humans did not like to start fights against armed targets, so with that decided, she placed the long straight blade with its curved grip . She wondered from where that elf came from. Maybe she knew something important, maybe she even knew how could she return home, with an army to liberate it from the hobgoblin invasion! It was important to know what was the girl up to, too.

The girl was beautiful, even for her high standards. At home, only the few maidens from the noble houses that remained were as fair as the girl in the bar. Even then, a harsh life was hard for everyone, and noone was as groomed and as perfect as this girl. There was a mud spot or two in her clothes, but that was for sure the long journey, even then, she was way cleaner than Daedhinen herself. Her hair was as the purest silk, only preserved at home in the ancient tapestries, and her skin was almost as smooth as the surface of pearls. It was so perfect that it was mesmerizing. The girl directed a few words at the man sitting at the bar, placing some coins in the table. The bar was loud and noisy, but Daedhinen knew she had to know who this girl was, and what she want. Maybe she was some kind of elven Princess? For sure she was way more beautiful even than the High Princess at home. She should talk to her and place herself into her service, and maybe then the Princess could help her people! But wait, Princesses in places like this? without guards? That was, at best, dubious. Perhaps the girl was a powerful wizard too? Perhaps she could teleport Dae home! She knew that wizards used weapons but no armor, and this girl was so perfect. But well, weren't all wizards princesses too? Back in home they were. All wizards were nobles and all nobles were wizards. That was theway of the elves. This meant that if the girl was a wizard she was a noble too.

She took a place close to the table were the girl was sitting, her intent fixated on listening to what the girl wanted. just fiddling her fingers nervously, not even removing her heavy, rude and dirty cloak.

Pyrom walked along the city looking around and seeing the sights. He needed to get a job but he already knew that the ship was his best shot at that so he took his time just walking along and looking. Most likely the ship would need some help and his strength was always great for moving things and fighting if need be. He hoped his mule wouldn't be much trouble it could go almost anywhere and if it was a problem he could make it into a somewhat expensive meal or sell it. Suddenly there was a loud crack, looking down Pyrom saw that he had stepped on a merchant's glass bauble that the merchant had been selling on the side of the road. Pyrom grunted a small apology and continued walking. Worst came the worst the merchant would press the issue but that seemed unlikely, not many people wanted to pick a fight with a half-giant wielding a giant axe.

As he reached the the ship he sighed happy that the merchant hadn't even tried to pick a fight with him. It would not look good for him to show up wounded with a bloody axe to sign up for a job. Then again it might have impressed them showing that he was not afraid to fight but it was too late now. He looked around trying to find the captain or someone who could hire him.

(Action: try to find Captain or high-ranking crew so perception check)
Can you imagine a world without hypothetical situtations?

The man's name was Devon, and he was the town drunk. He ogled Llarissa for a good minute and smiled goofily. "I am a bit thirsty yet. I thank ya. Well now, what brings a pretty lass like you in a trap like The Steely Mug?

Llarissa smiled as Devon ogled her, trying to be friendly. She didn't like his gaze, but she had long since gotten used to it in the years since she hit puberty. Her fey heritage ensured that she'd always be the center of attention in a crowd of men, especially dirty, perverted men, and complaining about such a thing would only make her look like a whiny, childish fool. Besides, she really was lucky for this, even if it wasn't the perfect life.

When the man finally spoke, Llarissa quickly answered him in a kind tone.

"Well, I just got into town, and I'm looking for work. I'm a fighter of sorts, and I was wondering if there were any jobs available for one such as me. This is a port town, is it not? So, surely there must be some ships in need of guards, correct? Would you happen to have heard of any, good sir?"

Kip looked him up and down and was already quite impressed. (And still rather desperate.) "I certainly see a brave and protective spirit in ye. If I didn't bestow upon you my blessings, I'm certain we'd lose all of ours. If ye promise to take to the oar as well, the deal is solid and yer horse well looked after. What was the name?" He extends his hand.

"Sir Isaiah S... Na, just Isaiah." he said, leaving it at that as he extended his hand to shake the man's, sunlight glinting off of his sandglass goggles. "And I'll lend a han' on th' oars, of course. Any man on a ship needs t' do his part, if he's able." He smiled - not that the merchant could see, under his desert garb - "An' could I get yer name too? I like t' know the name o' the man I serve under."

He took his mount by the bit with practiced ease, and shrugged himself, ready to set off to the boat as soon as the merchant was too. He wanted to get on the boat so he could make sure she was cared for and so that he could catch some sleep - as his father had taught him, over and over, "Ye sleep when ye can, an' fer all the time ye can. Ye never know when ye won' be able to again."

Searching for information on how to join the Devil's Fin crew, Daniel reached the closest tavern he could find near the port area, where the news about sailing would be more well known that any other place in the town. He didn't bother to check for the best one, he just tried to find the one not frequented mainly by pirates or rogues.
Entering, he didn't paid attention at all to the other patrons and their activities, and quickly walked to the barman, usually the best one to ask about happenings in the town.

He quickly ordered a mug of ale to him, but pulled out a silver coin to pay. Passing it discretely on the table, he asked to the Barman
" I'm interested in travel around the sea for a while, maybe having some adventure and gain some money. Do you have any info on crews ready to hire some man? "

The Devil's Fin was a fine ship even for a cog. The carefully constructed craft floated gracefully in the water - inviting adventure and promising dreams. A burly man with weathered skin and a determined face was feeling around and testing the joints. When within reach he turned around and eyed Solion up and down. "What do ya here for mister?", he grumbled. Nothing worse than wayfarers nosin' around. Then he took note of his religious charge and paused. Perhaps this was one with a more definitive purpose. His tone changed slightly. "I can help you with something?"

"Well then I'll not need the change." Daniel said, and then passed back the ale " Serve this to the next guy who ask for it, I prefer to not drink before a performance. "
However, before exit, he stopped and said " Actually, I may take a sip while you tell me more of this man named Adolfo. " Daniel didn't want to change his idea on the quest, but being informed is always an important thing for a bard.

Dae pays attention until the screech somewhat distracts her. The girl was looking for a job! And she was a fighter, just like Dae herself. She doubted the drunkard could be of any use, or had any job for such magnificent highborn as that elven girl was, but anyway. The idea had started to flash inside Dae mind as she turned to the barmaid just in time to be a witness of the serving girl's main flaw.

"Finest wine the house has, please", she said in the most courteous way she could manage in the common language, wincing a bit at the girl. "Two cups, one for me, and one for the other elf lady there".

Then she rose from her seat and walked directly at Llarissa. "I could not avoid to let my ears perceive that you are searching for an occupation in hope of benefit", she quickly says in the best elven she can manage, using the flamboyant usage of the language that she heard the nobles from home using, ignoring the drunkard and trying to keep her face hidden by her scowl.

Pyrom turned around to talk to the woman. It shouldn't take that long and she just might be someone important who wanted to give him a good job. "Hello, Ladyperson. You want to talk to Pyrom? You want to hire me for job?" Pyrom asked hopefully as he got closer to her so they could talk in a normal tone. He hoped she was the captain but he usually wasn't that lucky. With his luck instead of being the captain she would turn out to be a mage and she would be mad like those other ones he met.

He still didn't get why those mages had been so mad at him for eating those snack packs. They kept yelling at him about spell components and eventually drove him away with those odd powers. It was odd they seemed to be getting a long so well but then they suddenly didn't want to share their snack packs with him.
Can you imagine a world without hypothetical situtations?

Logic is like thumbs, it is not necessary but it sure is helpful.

Momentarily confused by the elf woman's flamboyant speech, Llarissa quickly deciphered what she was trying to say. Maybe the elf was trying to posture herself in a false status, but she was quite obviously failing at that. In any event, Llarissa didn't know much about grey elves, so she surely wasn't going to judge this stranger.

Responding in the elven tongue, Llarissa answered, "Why yes I am. Do you have a job to offer me?"

Daniel was really surprised and a bit scared by the barman reaction. That wasn't the info he was searching off, actually it was something useful that he would have preferred to not know.
He decided to follow the man suggestion and leave, the ale already payed before, and once outside he started thinking what to do.

On a side, the warning of the barman sounded really serious, and he couldn't just ignore it. Was truly such a danger leaving this town by sea? He started to try remember the stories he heard about the town to see if there was something about the sea that he may was forgetting. On the other side, this adventure could be his big break: he started to walk to the center of the town while thinking, hoping to reach the merchants in time to join the expedition.

Isaiah smiled. "Nice t' meet ye, Miste' Hardy." He stepped after the man deftly, leading his horse by its bridle, and followed the man until they served at the cog in fairly short order, despite Kip's assurances that he was slower than Isaiah.
