Nobody's donated at all since Max handed over his shares. Odd, I call it.

It's cause no-one can trade shares any more.

I'm so tempted to write a parody poem now called "How NewTexas stole April Fools' Day"

It would, of course, end with Max Barry harmonizing with us around a Wall Street Tree.

Let's not pick on New Texas. If one insists on seeing the situation as a united NS Community, against all those who did not participate as 'outside traitors', then keep in mind there's way more nations in the Top 25 than New Texas. And there's way way way more nations beneath that. Do we have any idea how many nations (not shares!) participated in the Community Effort, and how many did not? And how would we judge those nations which 'held back' just a few shares? Do we HAVE to judge?

Of all those non-participating nations, New Texas was merely the highest-ranked in shares, and that was due to one nation giving him a big pile of shares at once. A very, very big pile.

Congratulations, guys.
Max, you are magnificent. It is so incredibly rare for a site as large as this to have such an owner.

I would ask NewTexas first to make sure he knows it would all be in good fun.

However annoyed I personally was with Texas at the time of, we shoud know better than to go off against them. Ballotonia phrased it more eloquently than I could have. During that there were many times when if two/three people combined then joined us, we'd beat 25 mil.

We should praise those that contributed, from 1 share to 25 million shares. We did it together and we united a huge group of people--many of whom would not have met without this. This was something new and something incredible to see. Let's focus on that.

Once again, we thank you all.

Edit for typos.

Way back in the heady days of the mid-2000s, I must confess, I...I played Runescape.

I didn't really like the unstructuredness of it. There were quests, but otherwise little else to hold my attention. And of course, there were also cheaters. "Hey, everyone, did you know if you try to type your password it just comes out as ******* so unscrupulous players can't steal your account? Try it!" No such system was in effect, of course--it was just such an unscrupulous player.

And then there was the "trust game." People were told to just give up their belongings to one individual, which would be summarily returned; whoever trusted the offerer with the most got a prize in return. Again, vulnerable to gaming the system.

So when I saw this, I didn't really see the point.

But then I logged on with this nation and saw that someone in control of the communal NationStates World Cup signups account (I'm nominally running it right now, but lots of people know the password and whoever did this wasn't me) had given 1,093 shares to myself and a few other champions. (Sports RPers will appreciate the significance of that number.) Just to have 1,093 around. I must admit I would probably not have been selfless, or clever, enough to come up with that idea myself. So whoever you with the password are, thank you.

And so then in #nssport, several of us pushed channel operator Commerce Heights into the top however-many-they-displayed-at-the-time. Even I got in on it. They were just decorative shares--weren't they?

I didn't try and write poems for shares. I probably could have. I like writing poems. But what was I going to do with the shares? I rolled my eyes at the things people were doing. Was this just some kind of psychology experiment on Max's part? "Throw however many thousand internetters into a pit and give them something absolutely meaningless to claw over, and they will spiral down into displaying bikini pictures and cheating at auctions."

And then I started seeing the "top trades" list. People were trusting each other with all their shares. And then giving them back! Just to advertise for a common cause! I couldn't believe it.

Part of me still can't.

I wound up giving away all my shares to the community account, even those last 1,093 (after taking screenshots to remember that excitement). I went to bed about two hours before the end...

and woke up to this.

Thank you, Max. And thank you, ringleaders. And thank you to everyone who makes this game somewhere where we trust each other. To everyone who makes it amazing.

How can you even say that when it was the lack of greed and ego of one man that you won.
;D

Jokes aside I agree with Max that this was the best NS April fools. All the things people thought of to do, so interesting.

Hello friends, I have to say it was a magnificent effort and an unexpected but nonetheless glorious victory.

Although we do still have a threat, the former loyalists have turned against Max and are now focusing their anger on both the NationStates community and Max, now following a man called "Demphor", or "King Demphor", their hatred MUST be stopped and fast.

True.. Because the 4-lettered ones would have just given everyone 1 share and kept 100 billion for themselves and would have blocked 99% of the threads from IPO. And most likely wouldn't have had a separate IPO sub-forum to begin with.

I still say, that MAX ensured that no one could get more than 24,999,999 shares, unless he wanted them to.

The 5 hours from 11:00 pm last night to 4:00am this morning was the best time I've had on NS...

Really, in keeping with the plot of the original, it ought to be "How Max Stole April Fools' Day", since the Grinch gave them back everything in the end.
