"It is truly amazing that, nearly four decades after the the Loop was created, we are still feeling the effects of it's creation. Derelict mechs still lay strewn across the country, unimaginable creatures roam far from civilization, guass freighters shoot majestically across the skies... Yet our lives continue to go on as normal. And they always will. It is truly an amazing time we live in." - Klas Magnússon, CEO of Krafta Systems, January 9th, 1991, a month before The Flood.

"Las Palmeras' first invitation to a Brazilian-organized pageant was in 1991, and it accepted even if a TV channel was clueless on how to do that. Lolita García Calles was chosen as the 'ideal representation of Palmeran beauty standards'. Petite but with a curvy build, caramel skin, big clear-colored eyes, and dark hair cut down to ears.

And then she was informed she had to shave for a bikini competition and refused to do so claiming pubic hair helps prevent infections and protect sensible skin. Worse, upset she ranted backstage and was caught by media who managed to record it and her hand gesture proving it: 'Men here cheat too much. If someone cheats on me I'll go snap off their cock!' A quote apparently near-identical like one in a certain film."

"The new General Secretary of the of Las Palmeras, Antonio Valencia, not as popular as the preceding Montserrat Zorilla. Perhaps his eyebrows don't remind the nostalgic of Leonid Brezhnev."

My God, corporal, you're right. She almost certainly is some sort of synthetic human created by Ashkera, but I wonder - is she even aware of that? Or is it hidden in some deeply-buried subroutine just waiting to come to the surface?"

"出る釘は打たれる," The nail that sticks out gets hammered in, a somewhat well known Japanese proverb. While there is much more that can be said to refute this statement, it is a statement that could be very well true in Lansuonese society as well.

In Lansuonese, there is a similar saying. Mẃeī pātthīk lāihèng naga, pātchhōrñ dhẃhak sigap. This quite literally means The rat who attacks the snake, is the rat who shall fail to survive. Which can be translated to those who deviate a specific natural order will in the end suffer the consequences.

You see, while it is the norm for one to be the all glorious entrepreneur and climb the so called ladder that defines the seemingly meritocratic nature of Lansuonese culture, it is just exactly that. That is the norm. You rise or you fall.

So we return once again to the two proverbs. The nail that sticks out gets hammered in. The rat who attacks the snake, is the rat who shall fail to survive. What does it mean to fit into a norm that seeks to renew itself consistently? Are there certain merits that are deemed unworthy in Lansuo? Is that what can be meant when one applies a broad assumption of conformity such as said Japanese proverb? What does it mean by the Lansuonese variant of the proverb?

In the end, there is much more to this than saying that the 'norm is best for all' and calling it a day. This proverb is just that, a proverb. But it is worth to think about the implications and what it has influenced culturally. Lansuonese culture is complex, just like any culture, after all.

"It was a normal, ah... Tuesday, I think. I was in my room, playing 'Castle Wolfenstein' on my Krafta 2000... All of a sudden I heard scream from downstairs. I rushed to see what had happened... Our television had... Flesh bulging out of it's screen, which had shattered. There was... Blood pouring out of it, my mother had been the one who had screamed... We called the police, and found that... It was happening in other parts of the neighborhood. We were told to evacuate immediately, to make sure we didn't bring anything electrical with us... We were never able to return home. The government bought us an apartment in downtown Stockholm... We've been living here since. I don't know what I'm going to do with my life... I think I want to become a programmer." - Excerpt from the interview of Jules Neff, who witnessed the Flood firsthand in 1991. His town, Kåfjord, somehow burned to the ground shortly before the end of the Flood in 1992.

"Today is the dawn of a new era. We have revolutionised modern warfare, and now possess the ability to annihilate our enemies wherever they may be found, from our own borders to the far side of the Earth. We can devastate space borne threats and even conquer other worlds, but now this power has been refined. The enemy is at our doorstep, and continues to relentlessly push into our lands. But if they dare to strike out our heart, we shall burn everything they hold dear in a rain of fire so hot not even a single bacterium shall crawl from the devastation. We shall never be defeated, even if victory means annihilation."

"My brothers, long have we been forced to submit to foreign rulers, autonomous to a certain degree within their great expanding empires, whether it be the Roman Emperors who now dwell in Constantinople or the Muslim Califs and Sultans, descendants of Yisma'el. Too long it has been and I believe that now, while our lords are distracted in battling the Europeans, shall be our time to rise and strike our blow against them! A message to send to Saladin in his opulent Cairo palace that we have had to put up with foreign dominion for too long and that Israel shall have its independence! Yahweh guide and protect us today and may he have mercy on the souls of the enemies of his Chosen People!
~ Prince Eleazar ben Avram, son of the aging King Shimon VII, giving a speech before tribal leaders and Rabbis in a gathering outside Rafah, 1179; the following year, Eleazar led a rebellion against the Ayyubids while they were still busy battling the Kingdom of Jerusalem, which would last until it was crushed in 1189 though the Prince escaped to seek refuge in Antioch

"What you must always keep in mind is that humans love violence. We can't get enough of it. War, games, sports, you name it. Any kind of visceral, gritty outpouring of aggression or conflict is sufficient. You see, our entire existence is built off of violence. We take what we want from the ground, and destroy any opposition. We're the only species that tries to change our environment to suit our needs, not the other way around. Animals, forests, mountains. All resources to be exploited or annoyances to be gotten rid of. As such, what if we get to a point where there's nothing left to obliterate? We have tamed the good Earth, made it our servant. No animals left to kill, no forests to raze.
We turn our aggression inwards. On ourselves. And we call that war. Holy war, conquest, whatever you wish to call it. It is still trying to steal from others what we can not produce ourselves, or at least eliminate any opposition to our desires.

"How long have we been gone? Who is waiting for our return? Do any yet live? These are questions that we have, that we cannot answer. The chronometer is broken, the passage of time has gone with it, we have no way to count the days, our calendar does not apply here, it is a dead thing, a relic of Earth. The hopes of entire peoples sit on our shoulders, yet we have not heard from them, or vice-versa, in so long. There is almost no one left who remembers our landing, there is almost no one left who recalls Earth clearly. They speak of it with reverence, with worship in their tone. They speak of Earth as though it is God's own Garden of Eden, and even His name is distorted, they do not remember correctly, only ones like me, the very old, whose voices will be silenced by the march of time and then we will forget completely." - Colony Archives, Benjamin Morgan, The Founder
