[PASSED] Commend Antarctic Oasis

Postby Mousebumples » Fri Mar 12, 2010 11:03 am

Having gotten permission from The Palentine to modify/redraft his original proposal, here's my version (in the IC format that I'm most comfortable writing in):

Proposed Legislation wrote:Commend Antarctic Oasis
A resolution to recognize outstanding contribution by a nation or region.

THE WORLD ASSEMBLY:

NOTES that 17 Antarctic Oasis nations have authored 49 successful resolutions in total, within both the NSUN and NSWA;

DETAILS that these passed resolutions cover a wide variety of topics, including education, economics, child pornography, necrophilia, terrorism, naval protocols, and also the highly controversial subject of abortion;

LAUDS Antarctic Oasis as only one of the above passed resolutions has as of yet been repealed, which demonstrates a strength in proposal writing and ensures that the region’s efforts have affected all WA member nations;

OBSERVES that diplomats from Antarctic Oasis are frequently found in the Strangers’ Bar and that they have contributed greatly to the atmosphere and ambiance of that drinking establishment - provided that they are not brawling, lighting fires, causing explosions, and/or pranking other diplomats;

APPRECIATES the entertainment value that diplomats of Antarctic Oasis have added to World Assembly floor debates with their inclusion of shockingly profane dolphins, destructor bunnies, pie fights, water fights, karaoke contests, and more;

DOCUMENTS the other contributions that members of Antarctic Oasis have made to the NSWA, such as:
• Highlighting loopholes in proposed legislation
• Unearthing indisputable archeological proof that the WA Secretariat currently known as “Ardchoille” was originally known as “Artichokeville”
• Introducing all ambassadors to the Thessadorian Ambassador and her considerable assets;

OVERLOOKS the other, less honorable contributions that members of Antarctic Oasis have made to the NSWA, such as:
• Soliciting bribes for votes
• Exploiting loopholes in passed legislation
• Employing gnomish war-bands and kamikaze penguins to keep compliance officials at bay;

COMMENDS the region of Antarctic Oasis for their many wide and varied contributions to the World Assembly.

Co-authored by The Palentine

Three quick general notes before I jump into the latest draft -
  1. Just like I'm most comfortable writing IC, I'm most comfortable updating my drafts by detailing (specifically) what I'm changing and to what
  2. I noticed that my clause-opening verbage wasn't parallel to the final point: "COMMENDS Antarctic Oasis," so I changed all those to make them parallel. And now some of them don't sound quite as good to my ears, so I'm certainly open to alternate words, if you have any suggestions.
  3. A editing-mark free copy of the latest draft will be found in the replies to this topic thread.

I'm not linking up all of these, but here is my source.

For your reference: Historical Resolutions and World Assembly Resolutions

Evidence of Artichokeville's existence started here (I believe this is the first reference) and additional Artichokeville-references can be found here and here.

Here's a few more links for your perusal/curiosity-fulfillment:
Antarctic Oasis on NSWiki (the region has quite the vast NSWiki archive, which I recommend checking out if you'd like more information on the region to help determine your vote on this matter}
Delegates of Antarctic Oasis
Antarctic Oasis Delegate Smackdowns (or: how the Antarctic Oasis determines who their next delegate will be)

I can dig out examples of the other items, but I think most of them are frequent enough that ambassadors with a passing familiarity with the Festering Snakepit will understand the references and not need specific examples.

As always, thoughts and opinions (and other contributions) are more than welcome. I'm not positive when I'll be submitting this - if there's no further objections - but probably sometime in the next few days ...

As this text has been submitted (after being posted for debate/discussion for a few days), opinions are certainly welcome but suggestions for improvement are mostly futile at this stage.

Happy to hear it! In my long-ago work within the NSUN, I found the support of Krioval (now ... and perhaps then? ... of Antarctic Oasis) to be quite essential to my proposal drafting. Now that I have gotten re-involved with the NSWA, I've only become even more convinced that the region as a whole deserves - at the very least - a commendation.

Grammar? No?

Grammar, yes.

I've added the missing preposition after "inclusion" - and I mainly left "Destructor Bunnies" capitalized because that's how it was in the original draft on which MY draft is based. Since the Destructor Bunnies appear to be a national entity (and/or puppet), I'm wondering if I shouldn't, perhaps, leave it capitalized. I'm uncertain as to what proper/accepted protocol is on this matter.

But not all of those contributions are bad! Anyhow, I've addressed it by separating that section into two different parts.

(and a part of me wonders if I can't try to pass both a commendation *and* a condemnation with, essentially, the same proposal text ... snerk)

Thanks for the support and editing suggestions. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the latest draft!

Between? There was only one day (or less) between the NSUN and NSWA, how did they get 49 resolutions passed in that time? ;)

[/prick]

NOTICES that only one of the above passed resolutions have as of yet been repealed, which demonstrates a strength in proposal writing and ensures that the region’s efforts have affected all WA member nations;

NOTICES and NOTES as preambulatory verbs seem too similar to me...

Other than that, I have no further comments to make at this time. I think its an overall fantastic commendation for a well-deserving, fantastic nominee. Good luck!

Fine: how does NOTES that 17 Antarctic Oasis nations have authored a total of 49 successful resolutions between within both the NSUN and NSWA; suit you?

Or, other suggestions?

Unless you have a specific suggestion, it'll wait at least until morning when I can (hopefully) think of a better pre-ambulatory verb. I've got a whole list that I use in the GA, but most of them aren't as applicable here. *sigh*

I couldn't agree more. Which is why I pretty much pestered The Palentine to let me modify/submit this proposal when he offhandedly mentioned having a draft of this subject hanging around. :)

Iron Felix introduced the Destructor Bunnies way back in the days of the old UN. They were his robotic servants. Rumor has it that the Yeldan Antarctic Enclave consisits of Iron Felix and about 20 zillion Destructor Bunnies. :) Cheers!

Per a comment by Yelda, elsewhere, stating an indifference to the capitalization (or lack thereof) of Destructor Bunnies, that has been changed.

I also made a few other wording alterations (and dug up the evidence of Artichokeville, which can be found in the OP) ...

Latest version, sans editing notes:

Of course! What sort of fun would it be to talk about AO without having an IC debate thread. (I would think that we could just use this one, but ... I could be clueless on official/past tradition in the SC forum.)

OOC: I do pretty much all of my posting IC ... Ambassador Lizzy Hall just ... tends to be rather even-keeled and nit-picky and conservative (in terms of not wanting to offend anyone). She may need to be replaced at a later date with a more free and easy-going ambassador ... Or perhaps she just needs to participate more at the Stranger's Bar!

OOC: Ha, I'll have to dig out "Eduard Heir" from the dusty files -- the loose time-travelling, alcoholic, inventing, billionaire bachelor. He'd be a prime asset to your character's on-going moral corruption.

And yes, this thread will do. I just didn't realize we were already in-character. :)

And yes, this thread will do. I just didn't realize we were already in-character. :)

OOC: *shrugs* I think I'll have to start playing with italics/etc. like other delegations do. I've only been posting here on the NS forums for a little over a month (maybe 1-1/2 months?), so - at least initially - I was feeling my way to try to get a handle on common practices in these parts. Now, I've got a better handle on how things run around here ... but I've already essentially established the character of my ambassador. So I've either got to replace her (and as she's also one of my nation's rulers, I could explain it away, IC), or I have to corrupt her.

Corrupting her seems to be a much more entertaining path to take, so I may need to look more closely into that possibility ... [/OOC]

OOC: At the very least, I think that alcohol (or, more likely, a food or drink that is unique to Mousebumples, if only for the RP aspect ... I'll have think on that a bit) could have a pretty significant effect on her inhibitions. That would allow me to retain the nit-picky side of her (for evaluating proposed legislation, etc.) and still have a bit of fun in the more out-and-out RP threads, like the Stranger's Bar or the SC AT VOTE threads.

Proposed Legislation wrote:Commend Antarctic Oasis
A resolution to recognize outstanding contribution by a nation or region.

THE WORLD ASSEMBLY:

NOTES that 17 Antarctic Oasis nations have authored 49 successful resolutions in total, within both the NSUN and NSWA;

DETAILS that these passed resolutions cover a wide variety of topics, including education, economics, child pornography, necrophilia, terrorism, naval protocols, and also the highly controversial subject of abortion;

LAUDS Antarctic Oasis as only one of the above passed resolutions has as of yet been repealed, which demonstrates a strength in proposal writing and ensures that the region’s efforts have affected all WA member nations;

OBSERVES that diplomats from Antarctic Oasis are frequently found in the Strangers’ Bar and that they have contributed greatly to the atmosphere and ambiance of that drinking establishment - provided that they are not brawling, lighting fires, causing explosions, and/or pranking other diplomats;

APPRECIATES the entertainment value that diplomats of Antarctic Oasis have added to World Assembly floor debates with their inclusion of shockingly profane dolphins, destructor bunnies, pie fights, water fights, karaoke contests, and more;

• Introducing all ambassadors to the Thessadorian Ambassador and her considerable assets;

OVERLOOKS the other, less honorable contributions that members of Antarctic Oasis have made to the NSWA, such as:
• Soliciting bribes for votes
• Exploiting loopholes in passed legislation
• Employing gnomish war-bands and kamikaze penguins to keep compliance officials at bay;

COMMENDS the region of Antarctic Oasis for their many wide and varied contributions to the World Assembly.

Co-authored by The Palentine

OOC: I'd like to put a direct link to the proposal in the OP, but ... I have no idea how to do that. I've seen others do it in both telegrams and forum posts, but ... no clue here. Help? (further, the proposal is actually on PAGE TWO of SECURITY COUNCIL proposals ... wow, we've got a lot of SC proposals to consider)

IC: Your consideration of this commendation of a very worth region is greatly appreciated, and I hope that all WA delegates will consider approving this proposal.

Yours in gratitude,

OOC: Awesome, thanks! Is a request for Violet to add a direct link to the queue already in your suggestion list? (i.e. similar to the "Repeal This Resolution" link on passed resolutions - just for proposals in the queue) if not, let me know, and I'll start up a thread over in Technical. (the view source option totally works, but I like easy ... and it doesn't seem like it would be super-complicated to accomplish)

We look forward to the vote and the subsequent debate on this forums. It should get liely. (IMNSHO the debates between raiders and defenders tends to get downright boring? Where are the defenstrations? Where are the requests for bribes? Hopefully we should see at least another command performance of the Stripper Commandoes in this debate!)
