Grey Mountain Research Facility is located within the North eastern mountains of POF. The site chosen was one of the many underground fortresses/shelters that the POF had constructed over the last century for the defense of the country and its population.
Originally planned as a proposed nuclear waste long term storage facility, the advent of cleaner more efficient power sources rendered the proposed idea obsolete. Instead, it was decided that the site would be replaced with a government funded high security research facility for conducting high risk research and technological advancements.
Construction bidding was awarded to NW Canada and was completed on time and slightly under budget, much to the approval of the Government. It should be noted, that the quality of the craftsmanship that went into this project is a testament to their superb work.
Surface Defenses and Systems:Access to Grey Mountain is highly restricted. Only authorized personnel are allowed in the base and the handful of administrative buildings. Three defensive perimeters surround the base with a combination of fences, obstacles and sensors. Government troops stationed here patrol the perimeters and man the checkpoints on the surface.
Old artillery bunkers in the mountains were renovated and retrofitted. Multi-layered and multipurpose layered defenses using the old artillery bunks with in the perimeters.
*Twelve of the bunkers will mount 35mm MANTIS CIWS. These will provide point defense as well as capablity to engage ground targets with accurate, lethal large caliber automatic fire. The "swarm" shells are effective against personnel and light armored vehicles as well as aerial targets.
*Short range defense will be provided by 18 MMES ADA configuration mounts (ADATS, dual 35mm cannon, IRIS-T) which can engage both ground and aerial targets. *Medium multip purpose defense will be fixed ground versions of the TOR-1A containing 9K332 "Tor-M2" missiles which are optimized to engage guided munitions such as the AGM-86 ALCM.
*Long Range and ABM defenses are two fold. First being 18 quad S-400 Triumf LSAM/ABM launcher systems. The S-400 is capable of detecting six targets[4] out to a range of 400 km (250 miles), including aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles having a range of max. 3,500 km and a speed of max. 4.8 km/s and then engaging them at ranges of up to 200 km. It is designed to have improved performance against stealth aircraft.
*Final Layer of conventional based defense are three 32 armored vertical launch cells containing RIM-174 Standard ERAM, two 32 cell armored vertical launch cells containing RIM-161 Standard SM-3 Block IIA SAMs and the Land Aegis support and detection/targeting system.
*Rounding out the exterior defenses are three modified Mk-65 5 inch gun retractable mounts with the cannon removed and high-energy, chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) and support systems intended for deployment on the Horus class Battlespace defense cruiser
Detection capability is provided by the networking of the Land Aegis system, the tracking/targeting sensors of the other deployed systems to form an integrated matrix.
Initial Access:Grey Mountain access is done with a 1/3 mile long tunnel which has various twists and turns built into it preventing any high-speed incursions past the check points and to delay escape from the facility as well. Series of command and auto detect proximity mines line sections of the tunnel was well as Protector remote weapons emplacements. The access tunnel has a series of “bunker” style guard posts along its length as well which and block travel down the rail-line.. Five armed Security Force troops are always on duty at the exterior gate/door in an armored "bunker" post. Remote sensors tied into the Facility's security/defense system monitor all traffic approaching to enter or leave the facility. Three pairs of Protector remote weapons stations(Two mounting M240 GPMGs loaded with Armour-piercing incendiary ammunition; two mounting M249 SAWs loaded with armor-piercing ammunition; two mounting Tirrena Mod T-148 Flamethrowers) The complex is sealed with a series of three 25-tonne steel and concrete doors. Three pairs of static versions of the Protector remote weapons stations are mounted in each of the two spaces between the 25-tonne steel and concrete doors. The main level is steel-lined and Faraday shielded, to prevent EMP attacks, and air pressure sensors at both north and south tunnel entrances detect changes and seal the mountain closed automatically upon nuclear detonation in the vicinity.
General Layout:The layout of the Facility is as follows. There is a central silo shaft that runs the depth of the facility. Seven Master levels compose the silo. Each of the Master Levels is composed of four sub-levels. From each of the silo Master levels four "spoke" passages run and connect to a surrounding ring passage. On this surrounding ring passage are nine sub-sphere structures (Only four sub-sphere structures on Master Level Foxtrot). Though the structure of the facility is completed only portions of the facility are fully developed. Undeveloped portions are generally unused at this point with expansion in mind. Other wise they are used for storage purposes. The facility's main corridors allow for the movement of personnel and materials. A main lift system as well as three secondary lifts runs the length of the silo. These lift tubes can be segregated and isolated by sliding armored blast plates.
Level SphereLevel Alpha The Level is completely self-contained and armored. Physical Airlock systems as well as NBC overpressure are in place to isolate the Level from the rest of the complex.
1 Main Access Level: Through three sets of airlock style blast doors all personnel and vehicles must pass. "Bunker" style security posts are present on the "outside" and "inside" of these doors. A squad of (10) Security Personal in full combat gear and “sniffer” dogs are on duty at each of these security stations at all times. As persons/vehicles enter, they checked by the guards and by Infrared, Ultraviolet, Ultrasonic, and low-level X-ray sensors. Chemical and Biological sensors also check for the presence of chemical and biological agents.
