What is your nation's main submarine?

Postby The City State Rhydin » Mon Sep 27, 2010 10:19 pm

It can be your main submarine or the most numerous in your navy.

All submarine vessels of the RIRN(Rhydin Imperial Republic Navy) are provided for by: Harl L' Qu'mados Technologies, and our most numerous vessel would have to be that of the:

CASN (Strike Cruiser)
Quellarin (Castle) class
Image
The Quellarin was built as Rhydin's first stage in rebuilding the RIRN armed forces, and has since grown in both capability and numbers to be the most numerous force of attack submarines in it's own dominion of influence [region]. In the first five years of 1996 to 2001 alone, over 70 of them were constructued in shipyards across the Republic, with major construction yards located in Adelaide, Zanjiang, Jakarta, Broken Ridge and Garden Island.

As they are still quite capable as a support unit, HQLT still manufactures the vessel for both RIRN and ally duties.

According to the Encyclopedia Fatatatutica:

Fatatatutian submarines patrol all of the world's oceans. There are five Pacific Ocean flotillas, an Indian Ocean flotilla, an Atlantic Ocean flotilla and several undesignated flotillas. Flotillas consist of from two to twenty or more boats.

Each flotilla is based at its own tender, which contains all necessary supply and maintenance facilities. Tenders can refuel, rearm and resupply submarines on the high seas but need to anchor to handle major repairs requiring cranes, etc. Anything short of a major refit requiring a drydock can be done by the tenders.

Because of the danger to unarmed tenders from potential enemies, there are also several covert tenders, known as 'ghost' tenders, which are ostensibly merchant ships. They have no major repair facilities but they are capable of refuelling, rearming and resupplying submarines anywhere in the world. They carry state-of-the-art radar, sonar and communications equipment to avoid being surprised during a rendezvous with a submarine.

Fatatatutti's most modern submarines are the Fish class:

  • Dimensions: Length 70.26m, Beam 7.2m, Height 7.6m
  • Displacement: 2200 tons surfaced, 2400 tons submerged
  • Powerplant: 2× 3035 kW diesel engines, 1x 5000 kW electric motor, 1 shaft, 9000-ampere-hour battery
  • Speed: 12 knots surfaced, 20+ knots submerged
  • Range: 8000 nautical miles
  • Crew: 47
  • Armament: 6x 533mm torpedo tubes, 18x torpedoes
(Diesel-electrics are preferred because they are cheaper and quieter than nuclear-powered boats.)

A number of older boats are still in commission, used mostly for training purposes. Other training facilities consist of an escape tank and a depth-charge simulator.

currently it happens to be the Sea Horse Class Attack Submarine
Image
The Sea Horse replaced all Sea Wolf and Los Angeles class submarines on the front line of the Phoenix Fleet. The Sea Horse features an ultra sleek design and multiple control surfaces making it one of the most maneuverable in the world. It's 8 torpedo tubes can fire a number of munitions, including the Russian, 230mph Shkval and Phoenix Dynamix's 250mph Squall super cavitating torpedoes. This submarine also contains a special launcher which launches anti-ship anti-sub and anti-aircraft missiles. Features a standard hull mounted sonar array, towed sonar and side scan sonar, as well as inflatable escape pods. These pods are made from polyurethane and kevlar and inflate via co2 canisters. They can lift 3 250lb men to the surface from a maximum depth of 1,000 feet. Weights are attached which are dropped one by one to ensure proper decompression and prevention of "the bends" and an on board air supply prevents suffocation.
The sub also features the same enclosed prop system as the Sea Squid making this sub extremely quiet.
Propulsion:
(1) Nuclear Reactor w/ Fuel Cell and Battery backup
(1) Ducted Prop.
(2) bow thrusters
Armament:
(36) Missile cells (Can accommodate SUBROCs, ASROCs, Harpoon, SA-101 SAMs, SM-2 SAMs or Tomahawk missiles.)
[4] 750mm torpedo tubes (compatible with MK36-60, Shkval\Squall super cav torpedoes
and mines.)
[4] 660mm torpedo tubes (compatible with MK36-56 torpedoes and mines)

Misc. Specs.
Length: 290 feet
Beam: 38 feet
Max Speed: 38+ knots (submerged)
Cruising Speed: 20 knots ("silent" speed)
Crush Depth: 1800ft
Crew: 12 Officers, 98 Enlisted

However it is on the way to being outnumbered by the much smaller and still largely classified "Sea Wasp Class Attack Submarine."

942 Fetuf (Widow) Class
The Fetuf Class represents the state of the art in submarine design, incorporating characteristics that make it superior to any submarine currently in service, such as the ability to cruise silently and be less detectable to sonar. Advances include a compact and integrated hydrodynamically efficient hull for reduced broadband noise and the first ever use of pump-jet propulsion on a Haruspex designed nuclear submarine. The Fetuf Class is approximately 170 metres (560 ft) long, 13 metres (43 ft) in diameter, and has a maximum submerged speed of at least 46 kilometres per hour (25 kn; 29 mph). The Fetuf carries a payload of sixteen SLBM-03 'Nayban' (Reaper) class missiles.

Submerged Displacement: 24,000 t (23,621 long tons)
Length: 170 m (557 ft 9 in)
Beam: 13.5 m (44 ft 3 in)
Draught: 10 m (32 ft 10 in)

Powerplant:
Propulsion System: 1 × HVRL-6В nuclear reactor
Turbine: 1 × AEU steam turbine (220 MW)
Propellers: 2×7 blade fixed-pitch shrouded
Propulsion: 1 × shaft and propeller (rated at 95,000 hp)
Alternative Propulsion: Magnetohydrodynamic Drive
Speed: 29 knots (33 mph; 54 km/h)
Range: Unlimited except by food stores
Maximum depth: 450m
Complement: 107

Armament:
2-650mm torpedo tubes
4-533mm torpedo tubes
16-SLBM-03 'Nayban'

Armaments: Missiles
The Fetuf carries a payload of sixteen SLBM-03 'Nayban' (Reaper) class missiles.

Torpedos
The Fetuf class has four 630mm torpedo tubes and two 533mm torpedo tubes, 22 anti-submarine missiles and torpedoes of varying types. The torpedo room is in the upper part of the bow between the hulls. The torpedo tubes can also be used to deploy mines.

Systems
The sonar is an active / passive search and attack type with the sonar mounted on the hull under the torpedo room. The submarine is fitted with I/J band surface target detection radar. Countermeaures include ESM (electronic support measures), radar warning system and direction-finding system.

The submarine has both radio and satellite communications systems. It is fitted with two floating antenna buoys to receive radio signals, target designation data and satellite navigation signals, at depth and under ice cover.

Magnetohydrodynamic Drive
An electric current is passed through seawater in the presence of an intense magnetic field, which interacts with the magnetic field of the current through the water. Functionally, the seawater is then the moving, conductive part of an electric motor. Pushing the water out the back accelerates the vehicle in the forward direction.

MHD is attractive because it has no moving parts, which means that a good design might be silent, reliable, efficient, and inexpensive.

Aurora class nuclear-powered Hunter-Killer submarine, flight 4.
Displacement: 9,000 tons submerged, 8,200 tons surfaced
Power: FRN2006s nuclear reactor, 50,000+ hp
Propulsion: 1xShaft Propeller
Speed: 38 knots (submerged), 19 knots (surfaced)
Armament: 4 Mark XII 26-inch torpedo tubes forward, 2 aft.*
Munitions Capacity: 52 torpedoes or tube-launched missiles
Crew: 100
Max Depth: 2,100 feet
Length: 371 feet
Beam: 42 feet
Operational Radius: Determined by crew & munition endurance.
Designer: V&R Shipyards, Navato
In service: 1992 (Flight 4, 2006)
Cost: 1.9 billion USD

The Aurora class "Sheepdog" is perhaps the best example of the Front Range Navy's preference for lavish spending and high technology to obtain quality units. The Aurora has state of the art detection gear, high speed, and is better than quiet - she cannot even be detected as a hole in the background noise of the ocean except by the very latest equipment. The Aurora has been produced in high numbers, can be found in every role practiced by submarines except nuclear deterence, and can excel at any of them.

*She lacks dedicated missile cells, but is configured to carry as many tube-launched cruise missiles as desirable in place of torpedoes.

We're a bit behind the times on subs which the boys over at the Navy complain about endlessly. But our military is fairly small for a nation of our size and our subs focus mostly on security more than combat potential. These days they spend most of their time looking for pirates and smugglers.

The Surface Navy employs three classes of subs, each with a specific purpose in mind and are larger than modern day subs.

The Icthyosaurus-lass, your basic run-of-the-mill hunter-killer submarine, which is twice the size of a Seawolf-class:

Image

Then, there's the Plesiosaurus-class ballistic missile submarine, capable of carrying 50 missiles and its three times the size of a Typhoon-class:

Image

Finally, there's the Tylosaur-class submarine carrier, capable of holding 20 fighters, 30 bombers, and three shuttles in its hanger, and is three times the size of a single Plesiosaurus-class, making it the largest submarine in the Saurisian arsenal:

(Note that this Tylosaur class is under construction, but you get the idea of what they look like)

Our largest class of sub. The boat acts primarily as a light aircraft carrier and boomer. It has a compliment of 24 F-35 VSTOL Strike Fighters and 4 HAV-22 Ospreys. We also put 2 MQ-9 Reaper UAVs on board. The on board weapons compliment consists of 10 660mm Torpedo Tubes, 30 ICBM Missles and a Vertical Launch System for 60 Tomahawk Surface Attack Missiles and 80 Advanced Anti-Air Missiles. The sub also deplys 4 20mm CWIS systems and 4 RAM SAM Batteries when on the surface. The boat can also accomodate 192 Combat Marines and 1 full SEAL team, including being able to launch their SDVs and ROVs. Advance arc reactors and caterpillar drives propel the boat nearly silently under the sea. The hull is made of stealth material to greatly reduce the RADAR signature when surfaced.

An assault varriant of the submarine houses 6 F-35 Strike Fighters; 24 HAV-22 Ospreys and 4 MQ-9 Reaper UAVs. The Combat Marine compliment is 1728 with 2 SEAL Teams. The ICBMs are deleted and the Tomahawk compliment is reduced to 40.

Both variants can serve as nurse sub for 4 Attack subs or 2 Boomers for repair and replenishment.
