History

For Over 25,000 years the Republic stood, in one form or another and faced countless threats, primarally from the various Sith Empires across it's history. Following the Seventh Battle of Rusaan, the Sith were defeated, and disappeared from the face of the galaxy. Their presence was first realised during the Battle of Naboo, and their dark plots against the Republic culminated in the Clone Wars, and Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sideous, attempting to take over the Republic following the Victory of the CIS.

Unable to arrest the Chancellor at first, the Jedi found themselves under attack, and their temple invaded. Through the heroism of many the Jedi prevailed, Darth Vader was killed and the 501st Legion routed from the Temple. As the Dark Lord began to execute Senators who opposed him in an attempt to maintain his power base, the Jedi intervenned, stopped the Massacre and after a great duel, the Dark Lord of the Sith was killed.

The Master and the Apprentice were dead.

Before the Jedi or the Republic could celebrate however, fourteen of the Republic's systems were shifted from their Universe into an alternate Universe so far away from their own. In the time that passed the Republic found itself alone and vulnerable in a strange galxy. One goal was clear, the Rebuild the Republic

Government

Legislative branch

Each member state (system governments) returned a representative (a senator) to a central legislative body (the Senate). Senators were the ambassadors of their home worlds, and member worlds were able to maintain their government and society in accordance with local beliefs, customs, and traditions. There was a wide variety of different local governments along the political spectrum: from monarchies to republics to hive-like communes. In some systems, the senator was elected to that post; in others, the world government appointed the senator. Naboo's monarch appointed their senators, while the Alderaan Council of Elders elected their senator out of their own ranks (usually the heir to the Royal House of Organa, as the heir was also the leader of the council). Since the Shift cut the number of planets dramatically, other Senators have been elected to Represent their Species, rather than their planets. The Senate has, as a result, effectivly got two houses. The upper house made of the Planetery Senators, and the Lower house made of the Species Senators. In practice however, these two houses meet together as one Senate.

Executive Branch

The members of the Senate would then elect a Supreme Chancellor from amongst their ranks who would serve as the Republic's head of government (and, by default, head of state) and chief diplomat. Although since the Rusaan Reformation, the Supreme Chancellor's powers were curtailled, as a result of both the Clone Wars, and the different situation following the Shift, the Officer of the Supreme Chancellor has become much more powerful, and serves more in the capacity of a President. The Supreme Chancellor still ultimatly has to answer in most matters to the Senate, but is free to make whatever decisions he see's fit inside newly formalised Constituational Conventions. There are, natuarlly some matters that the Chancellor must address the Senate Prior to enacting the new laws. These are usually long-tern laws, rather than decsions designed to remedy current issues. The Chancellor was elected from among the senators who made up the Galactic Senate and served a term of office that lasted for four standard years. A Chancellor could legally serve only two consecutive four-year terms before he or she had to step down due to term limits.

Judicial Branch

The Supreme Court was the highest court of law in the Old Republic, and composed the judicial branch of the Republic's government. The Supreme Court was headquartered in the Galactic Courts of Justice Building on Coruscant.

The Court consisted of twelve justices (each addressed as "Your Honor"); one of them was the Chief Justice who headed both the Court and the judicial branch. The Supreme Chancellor can influence appointments to the Court through nominations.

In addition to serving as a "court of last resort" and as a determiner of constitutional legality, the Supreme Court also tried cases involving the highest politicians and most noteworthy people in the Republic. However, at least some cases (including the trial of senators for treason) were handled by the Senate.

Economy

The Republic Economy is based around Inter-planetary trade between it's member planets, which is taxed by the Government, as well as trade with other Stellar Powers. The Currancy of the Republic is the Republic dataries, or more commonly the Republic Credit. Most member Planets have their own Merchent fleet, both for trading with each other, and outside powers and traders, although trade agreements with Foreign Powers must be confirmed by the Senate. Trading with independant traders is authorised at every level. The Republic as a whole also engages in trading, more commonly with outside Foreign Powers or large corporations

A number of Corporations exist within the Republic, and in theory the answer to the Senate, but in practise they operate their own affairs. The Senate is currently attempt to rectify this particular loop-hole.

Society and Culture

The Galactic Republic had a very diverse culture. Member worlds were able to maintain their own culture in accordance with local beliefs, customs, and traditions. There was a wide variety of different cultures within the Republic: from religious communities like the Jedi to hive-like communes.

The Republic had a liberal policy towards arts also. The dominant aesthetic style of Galactic Republic-era was opulence and ornamentation.

The Republic Navy

The Republic Navy is the Military Force responsible for the protection of the Republics Sovereign Space and planets. The mandate of the Republic Navy allowed them to move into designated star systems in order to deal with any unrest that had formed with the knowledge that the majority of the governments of the Galactic Republic supported these actions. Any planetary government could call upon the Navy's help, although it would need Senate approval if the action was to last longer than seven standard days. However, the Navies primary task is the Protection of the Republic.

Republic Navy Warships

Venator-II Class Star Destroyer

The Venator-II Class Star Destroyer is the Primary capital ship of the Republic Navy. The second generation of the veritble design that served so well during the Clone Wars, the Venator-II sports enhanced shielding, weaponary and other systems. While designed primarily for ship-to-ship combat, the Venator had secondary roles ranging from starfighter carrier, to military transport. The expanded carrier role made the Venator-class popular amongst Jedi starfighter aces. As a popular multi-role warship of the Republic Navy, the Venator was considered heavily armed and armored enough to lead assaults on Rim worlds like Utapau as well as fast enough to chase down blockade runners, providing a quick enough Captain and command crew. There are four-hundred and twenty Venator-II Class Star Destroyers in service with the Republic Navy

Hammerhead-II Class

The Hammerhead-II was originally designed to fit the gap between the larger Star Destroyers and the smaller ships of the Republic Navy. It’s outward design is based upon the veritable Hammerhead Class cruiser that served in the republic navy for centuries in different configurations. Much larger than it’s predecessor it packs enough firepower and supplies to operate beyond Republic Space for extended periods and is often used when a Star Destroyer is either unavailable or considered over-kill. Two Hammerhead-II’s will usually escort a Star Destroyer when it is going into a combat situation. There are 760 Hammerhead-II Cruisers in the Fleet.

Acclamator-III Class Destroyer

The First to iterations of the Acclamator class vessel were dedicated towards the assault and capture of Planetery bodies. The Acclamator-III on the other hand, is designed to serve as a Destroyer in the Republic Navy. Acclamator-III's have been drastically re-designed, almost completly eliminating troop carrying capacity, and replacing it with sufficient shields and weapons to fit into the Destroyer bracket and be a viable Combat Vessels. In fleet Operations, Acclamator's serve as the primary escorts for the larger vessels, although they are certainly capable of taking on other vessels. There are 1,052 Acclamator-III's in the Republic Navy.

Defender Class Frigate

The Defender Class Star Frigate was designed to fill a gap in the Republic Navy inventory. Whilst the Nebulon-B frigate served valiantly, it was more designed to combat fighter craft, and was unable to provide the heavy firepower required for a general purpose frigate. Able to serve capably in fleet operations as well as operations away from larger ships, usually in the form of three-ship squadrons, the Defender Class Frigate is heavily armed for a Frigate, equipped with two Heavy Turbolasers compared to the ten on the refitted Venator.

Foray-II Class Corvettes/Blockade Runners

Designed to serve an important role in the Republic Navy, the new Corvette-Blockade Runner project, like teh Hammerhead-II before it, took a hint from ships of years past. Based on the Foray Class these vessels had long, slender hulls capped at the stern with large thrusters. These blockade runners were armed with turreted guns positioned on each side of the ship's bow and point-defense guns lining the main superstructure. The command area was located on the ventral side of the ship. Like it’s namesake the Foray-II class's original purpose was to safeguard the Republic Navy's reach by being mass-produced to the point of filling up the trade routes, but the ship is also capble of other. It is capable of assisting Republic troops and civilians caught behind enemy lines, and aided besieged Republic worlds by supplying them while under fire. The ships could also be used to secretly land commandos. There are over 1,600 Foray-II Class Vessels in service and whilst not on other assignments are often seen patrolling Republic Trade Routes and border regions.

The Judicial Department
The Judicial Department is the primary law enforcement service within the Republic. Their primary responsibilities are Investigating criminal activities, suspect beings or organizations, and other illegal behavior occurring within Republic space or involving a Republic citizen, as well as, policing the Republic's space, apprehending wanted beings, and providing other law-enforcement services within Republic space. The activities of the Judicial department, allows the Republic Navy to concentrate on fighting threats from without, rather than from within. Although the Judicial Department has the Authority to call in the Republic Navy at any time, should the threat warrent it.

Unlike in the past, the Judicial Department is no longer responsible for the Sovereignty of Republic Space, this role has once again been taken over by the Republic Navy. Although the Judicial's often encounter foreign traders or other non-govermental visitors.

The Judicial Forces

The Judicial Department maintains a relativly small fleet of vessels, that fill the roles carried out by Various Coast Guards of Planets in the far distant past. As a result, the Judical Forces do not have large Capital ship classes.

CR-90 Corvette

The CR-90 (Judicial) is the Judicial Version of the CR-90 Correlian Corvette used by the Republic Navy. A versitle warship, the CR-90 is the mainstay of the Judical Fleet, as it is more than capable of fending of Pirates and the other threats that the Judicial Fleet is expected to combat. Judicial CR-90's are painted, almost entirely in the traditional Republic, to distingishe them, both as duely authorised enforcers of Republic Law, but also to ensure that they are not mistaken for Navy CR-90's. CR-90's are a common sight around the Republic as they carry out their assigned duties.
