THE REPUBLIC OF DERPEDA


Basic Information

The Republic of Derpeda is a small nation situated in the far Northern Hemisphere. It's populace is a hardy race of people, having adapted to the elements. It is a nation of grave people, having spent their lives within a land often overcast and gloomy. The arts of Derpeda reflect the sullen atmosphere, often calculated and cold. The colors of it's flag, Field Gray and and Flat Black, represent the overcast skies and the 30 days of night that is experienced in Derpeda due to it's Arctic positioning. The most common language is English, interspersed with some Russian. It is renowned for it's heroic navy, which during the Second World War help prevent Finnish submarines from participating in the blockade of Great Britain.

Geography

The geographical aspects of Derpeda are rather bland. It is an island situated off the coast of Russia, it's only neighbor ( short of Canada, which is hundreds of miles to the North ). It is often shrouded in fog. The land of Derpeda is hilly, not unlike that of Iceland. There are many beaches on the coasts of Derpeda, but are often closed due to storms and ice blockage. It is cold most of the year, but the land has not become tundra thanks to a relatively close seismic anomaly that keeps the land warm. The seas around Derpeda are fished lightly, but are not commercially successful due to harsh environmental restrictions.

Economy

The economy of Derpeda is a stable, sulf-sufficient one based on light industry and a privet sector based around mining/service industry. It supplies itself with the basic resources, and imports most of it's technological assets from friendly countries. It has an excellent ship building industry, which is highly competitive. Contracts with the military are the prime concentration of Derpedian DockYards, but foreign contracts are being accepted.

History

Derpeda was colonized in the early 1700's by British explorers searching for the North-West Passage. Russian nationals also began landing on the Derpedian shores, but were evicted mostly by the British Marines stationed at Fort Hurrdurr. As the population of Derpeda increased, it became more and more independent of the British Crown, and on July1st, 1873, declared independence from Britain. Viewed as a resource drain by the Crown, it was quickly granted. The ingenuous settlers of Derpeda soon discovered natural oil wells inshore, and by the early 1900's was trading it's oil for technological assets and industrial assets that the Derpedians couldn't provide themselves. Derpeda sent a naval force in 1914 to aid Britain during WW1. It played a key-role in preventing German naval forces in bypassing the British navy via the far-north route. The Derpedian navy and marines gained their fame during WW2, when an entire fleet of Derpedian ships halted the Finnish navy's attempt to break out of the Baltic and strike at Britain's mainland during Operation Sealion. The Derpedian navy also played vital rolls in strategic aerial assaults of the German coast, with the aircraft carriers Lollipop and Mighty bravely striking with it's air arm at German ships stationed in Denmark. Derpedian Marines also participated in the daring raid at Dieppe.

Military

The military of Derpeda is a source of national pride and is integrated fairly well into the society of Derpeda. It consists of the Grand Navy of Derpeda, the Derpedian Armed Forces Land (DAFL), and the Derpedian Air Force. Military service is compulsory, with must young men choosing the navy as the branch they serve in during their 1 year term. There are currently 3.6 million men and women serving in the Derpedian Armed Forces, with roughly equal distribution amongst the branches, while the navy has a slight lead in recruitment with 52% of all members of the forces serving with them. Of the nearly 850 million people of Derpeda, it is estimated 690 million are eligible for military service with 230 000 reaching age annually. The age of enrollment shifts, but most recruits begin their term at 18. National spending on the military has increased with the industrial boom, with the 2010 budget allocating 801 billion over the next 4 years.

The military establishment is very secretive. But do to international involvement, this is known of it's capabilities:

NAVY
Recently, the Derpedian Grand Navy has announced it's commision of the Derpeda class Super Battle Cruiser. Image depicted below:

There is currently 39 Derpeda class Superbattlecruisers in service, with more planned. Specifics are classified.

The Baron class frigate is the standard frigate employed by the Derpedian Grand Navy. Image below:

There are 374 Baron class vessels in the DGN. Specifics are classified.

The Derpedian Grand Navy has recently revealed that they are in possession of 27 stealth super missile cruisers. Identified as the Republic class, they contain 128 Cv-X1 missiles. Standard procedure is to arm 2 of each missile with nuclear warheads, as an assurance policy for Derpedian power projection globally and to secure retaliation in the event of a nuclear strike on Derpeda. ARMY
The Derpedian Army is under the command of Field Marshall Thomas Brandlow.
- The Derpedian Stormtroopers: Under command of General B. Ferguson. Numbers 23-25 thousand men. The 2nd Stormtroopers is an artillery division, unknown roles for the other 7 divisions.
- The Derpedian Emergency Counter-Terrorism Division is the military elite. 3000 men strong.
- Standard rifle is the AK-74Du.

- Standard sidearm is the AK-Du9.

- DECTD members use the Krakek Tx-1986 combat shotgun in urban environments.


AIR FORCE
The Derpedian Air Force is under the command of Air Marshall Joshua Myers.
- Nuclear capability
- Possesses ballistic missiles. Known 40 warheads, 79 missiles.
- ICBM defense capabilities unknown.
- Utilizes F/18 fighters for the air superiority role/ground attack
- 870 F-18a's
- 400 B-52's in service, with an unknown number in reserve.

Government

The Government structure of Derpeda is a slow, ambling democracy. Elections are held rarely and are generally well attended. Recent Derpedian legislation has made voting compulsory. Due to it's isolated position, it's relations with other countries are often hampered. A move is being made to aggressively spread Derpedian nationalism to other areas, with an embassy program in the wings. The current President of Derpeda is Gregori Phinney.
