Rural Land in Your Nation

Postby Seculartopia » Tue Jul 20, 2010 6:48 am

What is the extent of rural, "the country","backwoods" or "boonedocks" in your nation?

When asked on the street, 8 out of 10 Seculartopians said "What rural land?"

Capitalism is always the answer. Whenever there's a problem in capitalism, you just need some more capitalism. If the solution isn't capitalism, then it's not really a problem. If your capitalism gets damaged, you just need to throw some capitalism on it and get on with your life.

Most of this country is rural, although how much of that territory constitutes 'Backwoods' (as distinct from 'Frontwoods'?) would be a widely-disputed matter of opinion...

This is the extent of our "rural" environment.

We have vast tracts of rural land. But services are well distributed in the rural areas so there is no real "backwoods" areas except for some of our more newly colonized planets in the areas away from the where the colony ship has been dismantled and converted into the first city of the planet.

There is very little, as most of the land is Urban, and the rest is Suburban or unpopulated forest.

We have lots of rural land, ranging from soft rolling farmland to large, impressive peaks, from moorland to seacliff - tops, from broad valleys to narrow jagged ravines

We are an equatorial rain forest. The populations of gorillas and chimpanzees (both kinds) equal or exceed those of humans. We have immense numbers of elephants, hippopotami and other animals.

There are no roads to speak of -- long distance travel is by river. There are thousands of small villages, as well as larger habitations. The capital, where the Clan Council meets, is on the coast, and is the largest city, with a population ca. 200,000 (it fluctuates considerably as the clan representatives come and go).

Only 10% of our land has major development on it as most development goes up and we have vast expanses of land. Another 20% of land is farmland. The other 70% has no development whatsoever, although about 5,000,000 citizens, scattered throughout the undeveloped land, live in tribal villages.

Most of Vermont is either Farms or Undeveloped Forest, and we like it that way, especially with one slightly urban center.

Although, really, it is not "Rural" like the Rural Stereotype is- it is simply just this:

And our Rural peoples tend to be very in the times, not slow people out of the times.

There's a breathless hush in the Close to-night
Ten to make and the match to win
A bumping pitch and a blinding light,
An hour to play, and the last man in.
And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.
Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,
But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote
"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

Lackadaisical is a massive nation, the vast majority of the country is rural lands (how else would we feed our people?) with concentrated urban centers, sprawling suburbia and smaller towns making up the remainder.

Without a definition of what constitutes the other classifications, we can provide no information on them.

As a PT (medieval at best) nation, we have plenty of rural land. Our nation is basically a few walled cities and a lot of tiny farm villages protected by the occasional castle-fortress, all widely scattered amid a vast swath of untamed wilderness.

In Living Freedom Land there is a large amount of rural land, and as more people move to the cities a smaller percentage of people inhabit rural areas. Rural dwellers have a distinct accent, considered uncouth by some, from city dwellers, and many of them are farmers. In contrast, the cities are based around manufacturing.

Rural people are much more likely to be religious, politically active, and give to charity, however, rural people do not live as long, make less money, and have less education. The cultural influence of rural Living Freedom Land, compared to urban Living Freedom Land, is surprisingly high though. Cultural conventions in Freedom Lander society many times originated in rural areas, and many sports and activities are rural in origin.

The actual land is very much tamed and farmed, sometimes in large tracts by big companies. The family farm is still alive, and many people make a living raising animals on their own land. The National Park System protects some important wilderness areas from human encroachment, preserving Living Freedom Land's "wild side."
