Comic books, Wizard Magazine, and a high school course in Russian. I've always enjoyed the exploits of Spider-Man, Superman, and the like. I've also always been a compulsive doodler (have you seen my car-toon thread?). When Wizard Magazine asked readers to submit ideas for characters to go toe to toe with the Savage Dragon in...I want to say 1991...a buddy of mine and I set to work creating characters. We never sent them to Wizard. Instead, we got the idea in our heads that we would rather write and draw stories for these characters ourselves. Again, it never really bore fruit, but before we petered out we had a rather healthy lineup. Included in that lineup was an evil 3rd Century sorcerer who had been banished to another realm and escaped back to our world at the outbreak of World War II, whom our heroes were transported back to 1939 to face. Of course, a sorcerer needs a mysterious language in which to spout his incantations, and I set about creating just such a tongue. As I mentioned, I took Russian in high school (a pilot program, whose teachers were learning just ahead of the class...). I loved that it treated the "to be" verb as an understood non-entity in the present tense, and decided to go one step further with Katothwa Re by taking time out of the verb entirely. I chose a few verb tenses, stuck them at the beginning of the sentence, and started making up vocabulary. I would like to point out that it can be exhaustively difficult to keep track of the vocabulary of a make-believe language entirely on paper, no matter how good your penmanship is. It fell by the wayside.
Fast forward to 2005 or so, when I dusted off the KR alphabet and began trying to track that vocabulary by creating a true English-KR dictionary on my Mac. My choice to use Adobe Illustrator worked well for creating the characters, but didn't do much to solve the problem of tracking and maintaining vocabulary. It wasn't until I started this thread and FINALLY thought to put things into a spread sheet that I'm starting to see real progress. The spread sheet is helping with the tracking, but you are helping the language take form. I know it sounds corny, but I want to thank you for your help in getting my twenty year old project out of mothballs and spurring me to do something with it.
