South Africans decided it was a good idea to rip the turret off a Comet and slap it on an ex-brit armored car.

Ah, Alvis Saracen.

Of course, they were already fielding 4x4 armored Panhards with 90mm HV guns by that point.

Wiki says under the Saracen article: "Concept 3 New Generation Armoured Car: Mk 3 suspension and drive train with chassis redesigned by the South African Defence Force to accept a 77mm HV tank gun. Prototype only"

Along with this picture:

Given that it's essentially an elongated Saracen chassis, do you think it could still carry troops?

When did this happen?

some time after the 82nd airborne retired the Sheridan.

they never made one due to the US army being completely uninterested in such a tiny vehicle from a place that wasn't 'murrica

Judging by how far back that turret is, probably not.

Like many electrical technologies the hype far outpaced reality.

It was hoped ETC would save money, space and weight. In reality it turned out to save none of these things.

Why would someone bother to recreate BTR-50 with BMP-3 chassis?

Hello humans. I am Sporekin, specifically a European Umber-Brown Puffball (or more formally, Lycoperdon umbrinum). Ask me anything.

Cuteness? I've seen photographs of Indonesian Marines using BTR-50 dated from Operation Seroja in 1975. And during the emergency in Aceh. While there are RCWS developed for it, i doubt it could be armed with, say 30mm autocannon without sacrificing troop carrying.

I gave up on drawing a BMP-3 two years ago, and you make a modified BMP-3 in two days.

Curse you, Korva.

They aren't "stupid" except in hindsight. The wiki article was written in the oughties back when "everyone" [i.e. laymen] thought ETC would be the next big gun revolution. In reality, it provided a fairly modest 7-9% increase in muzzle energy, when people expected it to be like 100% increase. Since everyone went with the ETC option, under the assumptions that it would provide near 140mm lethality and that it could be retrofitted into existing tanks, when it failed so did NATO's future tank guns. Should have just carried on with the 140mm tbh, but whatever that would require spending money or something.

It's a bit like bulk loaded liquid propellants and cased telescoping ammunition. Except CTA is still going somehow at AAI HQ in the form of LSAT 5.56mm.

it can provide 100% increase in propellant efficiency if you attach it to a cubic meter of capacitors and associated electrical equipment
