The Perseid Federation (Perse: Ομοσπονδία του Περσέα), also known as the Omospondia, Persea, or simply PersFed, is a predominantly human civilization and a sovereign state that controls several worlds mostly concentrated in the Perseus Arm in the Alpha Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy. As of 1368 XS it has an estimated population of over 130 billion inhabitants, and retains control over 20 systems—6 of which are highly developed core systems. The Perseid Federation also has jurisdiction over exclaves spread throughout the Galaxy—one of them in the Gamma Quadrant. Xenia, the capital world of the Perseid Federation—along with its sister planet Theris—is the fourth planet in orbit around its star, Yirae. The Perseid Federation has had their current extent of control over their territories for nearly a century.

Xenia, capital world of the Perseid Federation.
The Perseids are one of many descendants of an ancient human civilization located in the Alpha-Beta periphery of the Milky Way Galaxy. A group of nine colony ships from there went in the direction of the constellation Cygnus, with the funding of certain companies. In the midst of their trip, contact was lost with the ancient civilization—which had likely fallen to internal unrest and civil war according to archaeologists. Thus the colonists were on their own for the next several decades. Arriving in the Perseus Arm, five of the ships remained to found new colonies—the other four continued on towards the more rimward regions of the Quadrant. Initial attempts to colonize the habitable worlds of the Sivulon Reach ended in disaster due to the planet's native microorganisms, which resulted in many colonists dying from disease. The ship that arrived at Xenia for example, lost more than 70% of its 50,000 colonists because of bacterial infection.

In order for the colonists to survive, they remained in orbit for years getting acclimated to the native bacteria before living on the surface permanently. Once they were immune, formal settlement finally began. The colonies grew larger and larger thanks to indigenous flora and fauna as well as ones brought by the colonists—bamboo, wheat, and horses were two notable species that were introduced. Gradually, what was once thought to be inhospitable for the human colonists became where they thrived. Their populations grew in number, and soon the colonies became independent civilizations that had a more or less homogenous culture with one another. The five colonist groups lost contact with one another, and would not reestablish it until the 2nd century XS.

The Xenia Standard Calendar was created alongside the establishment of the United Nations of Xenia, which was established to unite the nations of the planet under one government. The years prior to that were marked by devastating wars that was caused by radical nationalism and expansionism. In 4 XS, Xenia successfully colonized its natural satellite, Daphne, opening the door for the colonization of the Yirae System. The first planetary settlement that was established by the Xenians outside of their home world was on Theris, another habitable planet that shares an orbit with Xenia.

By 134 XS, the Yirae System was effectively under Xenia's control, and it began making plans for colonizing nearby star systems. However, other human interplanetary civilizations had formed in those systems, with their home worlds being the hegemons of their respective systems—the same conditions that brought about the creation of Xenia. These civilizations—Arydice, Psyche, Minaris and Servitus—had become respectable power in their own systems (Gasan, Callos, Kassaras, and Avis, respectively), and they and Xenia began to complete for influence and power in the Sivulon Reach. Despite the five powers engaging heavily in trade with each other, each of them was wary of the others, and were effectively in a cold war among themselves. The cold war turned hot when a Xenian patrol frigate mistakenly fired on a Minaris armed transport ship, thinking that it was a pirate vessel. This lit the flames of the devastating Xenia-Minaris War that began in 504 XS, spreading to include the other three powers. By the end of the war in 528 XS, the war claimed over three billion casualties, and weakened the five powers greatly. Preparations were made for the five to establish a confederation to prevent a war from happening like this again.

But, what hastened the creation of the Omospondia was the Great Technophage Swarm that left the Arydican colony of Himis desolate. In 533 XS, the representatives of the five powers met at Xenia to sign the Yirae Charter, establishing the Perseid Federation. Their first eighty years of existence was mostly spent on attempting to repel the technophages during the Technophage War. The core worlds of the Omospondia had faced several Pyrrhic victories against the technophages before the swarm left the Sivulon Reach in 616 XS. Technology advanced at a rapid rate during this time, and the government gradually became more and more centralized in Xenia. After the war, a sense of Perseid culture emerged as the arts and sciences breathed new life. It had contacted many interstellar polities throughout the Alpha Quadrant and constructed a mercantile web connecting many of them. This was later referred to as the Sivulon Trade Network.

In spite of this, the citizens of the other worlds became more and more suspect of the progressive centralization of power in Xenia. It seemed as if the Xenians were beginning to dictate the internal and external affairs of the Omospondia, in spite of it being a "confederation" of like-minded states. Aside from that, the Astrostratos ballooned to massive proportions—so much so that other responsibilities such as health and education suffered from budget cuts. Separatist movements formed and dissolved among the Convocatures, and the combination of the technophage threat and the desire to preserve the peace and prosperity of the Omospondia kept the nation intact for the next two centuries. The rift opened dramatically when the Perseid government became overwhelmed by the Crash of 844 XS, which sent Perseid markets crashing. The government became more and more mired in its trade deficit with the rest of the Sivulon Trade Network, and as more Axias flowed out, harsh austerity measures were enacted. The insolvency of the Perseid Federation, the inability of the government to respond effectively to the depression, and rumors of widespread corruption among federal-level government officials angered the population greatly—convincing many of them to revolt.

The Perseid Revolution had erupted in 854 XS, which sought to overthrow the established order brought about by the ruling Themelian Party. Initially a series of peaceful demonstrations demanding change, it was brutally put down by the Perseid government. Thus the revolutionaries and the government were embroiled in the Perseid Civil War, which ended in 873 XS with a rebel victory. Over 11 billion Perseids died fighting, and several atrocities committed by both sides were made—most notably the heavy bombardment of Theris by the 8th Astronautikon Fleet. A new government replaced the old order, and a new constitution was signed that created the institution of the Archonate—the five Archons of the Perseid Federation. The capital still remained in Xenia.

After the war, the Perseid Federation's economy recovered quickly, and its industrial capacity grew substantially. The Omospondia became an economic titan that dominated the commercial activity of the Alpha Quadrant—thanks to a greatly expanded Sivulon Trade Network. Investors from all over were attracted to the Perseid Federation, and this led to further economic growth and trade opportunities, as well as close diplomatic ties with existing and nascent trading partners. Exploration vessels were sent out in all directions looking for other civilizations, and a few first contacts were deemed successful. Perseid economic, political, and cultural influence disseminated throughout the cosmos in what was called the Perseid Golden Age.

A certain race of sentient beings known as the Firasai have been discovered in the 860s XS, and they were slowly incorporated and assimilated into Perseid society. Many of these xeno immigrants were economic migrants or refugees. Several Firasai immigration waves came in quick succession, particularly the ten immigration waves caused by the destruction of the Firasai home world due to collision with a rogue planet. This led to serious ethnic conflicts that affected the Omospondia for the remainder of the 9th century XS and for the entirety of the 10th century XS—mainly due to racial discrimination, xenophobia, and the refusal of the Firasai to completely assimilate. Some have said that the Firasai had ended the Perseid Golden Age due to the economic strain that they placed on the economy. To stem the tide of ever-increasing Firasai immigration, the government closed off its borders to migrants. Intermarriage between Firasai and humans soon led to a new hybrid race called the Malliopi.

In 942 XS, the Perseid Federation and Idruteia became more and more hostile with each other due to their shared desire to control the Diadromi Ouranos. The Perseids were also worried about the Idruteians' excessively hedonistic way of life. Pressure from both the dominant Theognostic community as well as from Perseid corporate giants forced the Perseid government to take a more opposing stance. Both powers built large navies to keep the other in check. The tensions grew and grew until the Ouranos War enraged between the two and their respective allies. The war, while having claimed 1.1 billion casualties, was still influential enough for the citizenry of the Omospondia to convince the government to seek for peace—especially since they lost four trading posts to the Idruteians. At the urging of both citizens and prominent politicians, the Perseid Federation retreated into isolationism in the 11th century XS, and would not return to the galactic stage for the next three centuries.

The Perseid Federation shut itself out from the rest of the galaxy, and as a result the Sivulon Trade Network suffered a dramatic decline. The once famous routes where Perseid merchant vessels once roamed were now mostly empty. A barrier had been in effect between the rest of the quadrant and the Omospondia, and trade locations that once benefited from the Sivulon passages went through a gradual and painful death. Despite the decline of its external trade network, which may have resulted in the decline and collapse of star-states that benefited from it, trade and commerce was still alive and well within the confines of the Sivulon Reach. For the Perseids, the self-preservation of their civilization was paramount, and this was evident in the Omospondia's economic self-sufficiency.

Because of new policies made starting from the 1340s XS, the Perseid Federation has opened once more to the rest of the galaxy. Three ten-year plans had prepared it for entering into the forefront of galactic politics and for restoring commercial ties with trading partners. The Sivulon Trade Network was in the process of being restored and possibly expanded—especially with diplomatic developments with the Free State Republic. Challenges still confront the Omospondia in this contemporary age, such as the Great Displacement and the long road to reclaim its economic preeminence.

The Perseid Federation is recognized by others as a multi-species interstellar state due to its diverse number of sophont beings — however, it has been a human civilization for much of its history. It was only around half a millennium ago that the former concept has been shattered, with the arrival of the firasai and a few other species. Here is a list of sophont species that currently reside within the Omospondia.

Human

The Perseid human (Homo sapiens sivulis), also called as the Sivulon man, is a subspecies of humanity that is prevalent throughout the Perseid Federation. Around 56 percent of the population of the Omospondia identifies as human. The average height for a Perseid human is between 6' 2" and 6' 8" for males and 6' 0" and 6' 6" for females. As with other humans, they are mammals that are classified under the order Primates. These humans were descendants of an ancient race called Homo sapiens, which originate from the Solarian Reaches. Since then, they have induced artificial evolution through bioengineering and genetic manipulation to arrive at the current subspecies that they are today.

Perseid humans are similar to their other human subspecies relatives in many areas. They are warm-blooded placental mammals that give birth to live offspring and nourish their offspring with milk. They have five digits per hand, one of them being an opposable thumb. They have very Humans are very much well-known for their 'flat' faces.

The eyes of a human are placed forward so that one can judge distance. They have an average sense of sight compared to many xeno species, but it is enough for humans to make accurate assessments of what they perceive with their eyes. Their irises tend to be brown or blue in color, which may be a hereditary trait. However, there have been mutations that can cause uncommon colors for irises such as green or violet — and even rarer mutations which may give colors like gold or silver.

The human sense of hearing is poor compared to many non-human sophonts. However, through their ears they can ascertain the direction from which the sound waves originate. Whenever their ears pick up an auditory signal, humans turn their heads in the direction of the signal.

The sense of smell in humans also happens to be poor, but it has found great usefulness with the sense of taste. Humans have an omnivorous diet, able to eat almost all kinds of meats and plants, as well as consume foods rich in calcium which have been extracted from other animals. Their sense of taste is moderately acute, able to identify more kinds of taste than most xeno species. A human's sense of taste often works together with one's sense of smell in order to correctly ascertain tastes — which is the reason why humans with colds cannot make out tastes as well.

They have a closed circulatory system that consists of one heart and a wide network of blood vessels able to circulate blood through all parts of the body. Nutrients absorbed from the digestive system as well as oxygen obtained from the respiratory system are being transported to all of the cells of the body through red blood cells, which are red due to the presence of iron-based hemoglobin. They also have a pair of lungs which mainly breathe air from a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere — though only oxygen is taken in by the lungs and transferred to the cells through the blood.

Like most animal and plant life, each sex has its own reproductive system. However, there are certain unique features in humans that other animals do not have. For one, human male genitalia lack a penile bone, but instead has chambers which fill with blood upon sexual arousal, thereby achieving an erection. Human females also have more extreme menstruation compared to other primates.

However, there may be certain profound differences between them and the rest of humanity. A Perseid human may have unique bioluminescent patterns on their skin. These patterns do not appear in daylight, and so they can be clearly discerned at night or in a dark space. The patterns may come in a variety of colors and arrangements — in rare cases these colors may change. No Perseid human has the same pattern, so this trait is helpful in the investigation of crimes being committed at night — however, this method is not as reliable as fingerprints or DNA samples.

Firasai

The Firasai (Sivulis hominini lupus) is an anthropomorphic sentient species native to the Sivulon Reach. Their biology has been described to be fairly similar to certain canine mammals. The average height for a firasai is between 6' 5" and 6' 11" for males and 6' 3" and 6' 10" for females. They are the largest non-human sophont group within the Omospondia (representing around 33% of the population), and the most populous of all sapient races in the Sivulon Reach. Although they have independently developed from humans, they are classified under the Hominini tribe for convenience.

Firasai have snouts that resemble a mix between a wolf and a shark, and ears that point backwards. Their ear holes cannot be normally seen since firasai are known to have thick fur. However, this does not impede their acute sense of hearing, which is more superior compared to humans. Upon picking up an auditory signal, their ears point in the direction of the sound wave, similar to many mammalian animals.

Their mouths are able to open wide enough to swallow animals whole — such as large domesticated fowl and small feline species. They also have a large tapered tongue. Whenever they open their mouths, a meaty band stretches at the sides, which is similar to that of reptilian species. This is because the firasai are mainly adhering to a carnivorous diet, though there are some cases of omnivorous and even herbivorous firasai. A firasai's canine teeth are particularly sharp and curve toward the back of the throat.

Both male and female firasai have similar morphology — females in particular lack visible soft breasts compared to their human counterparts. Firasai tend to be ectomorphic or mesomorphic in their body build, though there are rare cases of endomorphic firasai coming into light. Four digits can be found on each hand and foot, one of them being an opposable thumb. Firasai also have retractable claws that come out when they are aggressive. Their tails act as a stabilizer to aid the firasai in standing completely upright.

The firasai are sex-selective hermaphroditic beings, meaning that they can choose to have male or female genitalia upon mating. The external reproductive organs of firasai aren't visible to the naked eye. A tongue like organ called the plocami is stowed inside the firasai's vagina, and acts as a cover. The plocami is able to move around freely, and may function as a male organ if needed by a firasai. Another ability that can be done by the plocami is the ability to grab objects. Unlike most animal life, there are two separate ducts in a firasai's reproductive organs — one being a urinary tract and the other which runs inside the plocami.

Malliopos

The Malliopos (pl. Malliopi) is the sterile offspring of a firasai and a human. A malliopos is mainly human in physiology and appearance, with firasai traits that are vestigial at best — though there may have been reported cases of malliopi with functioning firasai traits. Less than 5 percent of the population of the Perseid Federation identify as malliopos. Malliopi males tend to be sterile, while females remain fertile. In addition to that, only human males can successfully breed with malliopos females, since firasai spermatozoa are unable to fertilize a malliopos ovum. However, the offspring of a human male and a malliopos female comes out as human.

Therian

The Therian (Argentum detraxerunt) is a member of a xeno race unique to Theris. The therians are the fourth largest sophont race in the Perseid Federation, below the malliopi. They are humanoid in appearance, except for their lack of a cartilaginous structure to form the nose. While they have as much hair on their bodies as their human counterparts, therians are often bald — as hair follicles on their head grow at the same rate as the rest of their skin.

Their ears are able to pick up higher frequencies than humans, and they also have better eyesight — however their sense of smell is poorer, and their sense of taste by consequence. Their body stock seems to be more ectomorphic than humans, though they are just as strong. Their bones are made of a material yet to be discovered that is stronger than calcium. The position of the heart is at the center of the rib cage, behind the therian's sternum. Both the left and the right lung are divided into three lobes.

A therian has 48 pairs of chromosomes, two of which are sex chromosomes. Its sperm dictates the sex of the offspring, following XY-sex determination. A therian fetus develops in the womb for eight months.

Iphigepos

The Iphigepos (Signifer fortis proles), Iphigepoi in the plural form, is a member of a sapient species found exclusively on Ambrosia. The iphigepoi constitute the dominant portion of Ambrosia's sentient population numbering at around 1.16 billion registered sophonts on the 1363 XS Census, though there are estimated to be more. They are renowned for their physical strength — being able to lift objects ten times their weight — despite having a short stature, only 2' 11" on average. They are sensitive to sunlight, so they tend to live in massive underground networks that extend for miles.

The iphigepoi are an example of an uplifted species, or a race of beings that were introduced to more advanced technology by some external entity. The settlement and colonization of Perseid humans on Ambrosia began in the 7th Century XS, when the natives were in the infancy of space exploration. Seeing how the Perseids had greater understanding about the universe than they did — and because of their love of knowledge comparable to that of their visitors — they decided to join the Omospondia in hopes of acquiring a much greater understanding.

Its head is proportionally large to their body, which measures approximately a fourth of its total height. Its eyes also happen to be proportionately larger than the eyes other sophont species. However they are sensitive to light, which is the reason why an iphigepos generally avoids going up to the surface — unless they are given visors to shield their eyes from the light of Kassaras. Its brain is impressively large, much larger in proportion compared to a human's. In its natural state, a iphigepos brain has more neural connections and by extension greater brain potential than humans.

The development period of an iphigepos fetus lasts around seven months. 45 pairs of chromosomes make up the genes of a iphigepos, three of which are sex chromosome. The determination of the offspring's sex follows XY-sex selection, though with some modifications. A female may result if the sex chromosome trio is XXX, while a male may result if it is XXY or XYY.

Semeto

The Semeto (Striata ruber filius) are a race of sentient beings who came from the Chryseic (galactic northern) regions of the Sivulon Reach. They are humanoid in stature, able to stand upright — but xenoid in outward appearance, resembling reptilian creatures. They appear to have red stripes that contrast with their yellowish-gray skin. They also have more cervical vertebrae than other sapient races in the Omospondia, which may have attributed to their relatively long necks. The average semeto stands at 7' 2" for males, and 7' 0" for females.

They are primarily omnivorous, feeding on a diet mostly containing herbs, small mammals, amphibians and insects. In more uncommon cases they can consume larger animals, including other intelligent species. However, eating sapient beings is banned by the Perseid government.

A semeto has 54 pairs of chromosomes, two of which are sex chromosomes. The determination of the sex of the offspring is dictated by the ovum (ZW-sex selection) as opposed to most mammalian sophonts (XY-sex selection). In this case, males are homogametic (ZZ) while the females are heterogametic (ZW). The development of a semeto fetus lasts eleven months.

The capital ships of the Perseid Federation are often the easiest way for many people to measure the military might of the Omospondia. They aren't wrong, for these warships are indeed the most powerful in the entirety of the Astronautikon. However, they aren't correct either since their might is only half of what constitutes the might of the Perseid armed forces. After all, these ships are few in number due to their expense and are often escorted by smaller warships of varying sizes and classes. Occasionally, capital ships can be escorted by other capital ships, especially in theater warfare. The loss of these ships in battle may be considered by the Omospondia as a great casualty.

Capital ships are often armed with the most powerful offensive weapons in the entirety of the Astronautikon, and complemented by scores of small craft in large hangar bays and a couple of Geostratós regiments. They also are generally equipped with moderate-to-high output gun and missile batteries, along with the most developed point defense systems and energy shields. Crews serving on board these ships are usually the best and the brightest, usually coming from crews of smaller warships. To maintain their combat readiness, they participate in military exercises held thrice a year.

Listed here in this canon factbook are the capital warship classes of the Astronautikon, arranged in descending order in terms of ship length.

Cataphract–class super-dreadnought

The Cataphract–class super-dreadnought is the latest class of capital warships commissioned into the Astronautikon. This many Perseids have boasted, would be a testament to the Omospondia's ingenuity and innovation. So far, only one ship of this class is in active service, the APO Cataphract (hull designation number SBB-01), commissioned in 1362 XS. It is the largest warship ever to be constructed by the Omospondia, measuring 6,734 meters in length from bow to stern. Another ship of this class may be completed in 15 to 20 years according to estimates.

Construction of the Cataphract began in 1338 XS in the Cleisthes Deep Space Shipyards at the outskirts of the Kassaras System. It was to have some of the latest in state-of-the-art military technology, such as phase drive navigation, more accurate phase jump Metaverse communication and an experimental hull reinforcement structure. There have been some delays due to the expense being incurred by these military hardware. Nevertheless it was finished in 1354 XS and underwent preliminary trials for the next four years by the Astrostratós. The trials have been deemed a success by the Perseid armed forces, and she was commissioned into the Space Navy in 1362 XS.

It has a primary armament of 5 Argos Series 12 high output railgun batteries, the heaviest and most powerful guns to be installed in any Perseid warship. Secondary armaments include a missile pod network utilizing SD36, SD38, and SD41 missiles, Tyrant Series 4 plasma network for ship-to-ship combat, 1355 Series secondary railgun batteries, and a Plutia 800C Mark III autocannon point-defense network. It is also capable of carrying a complement of 12 Acantha–class heavy frigates and a large number of small craft. Orosidirium-based composite armor forms the main layer of its armor, and a high-output energy shield has been installed for extra protection.

During construction of the Cataphract, ship engineers had realized that the engineering practices employed in building it had taken too much time and resources. Some of them proposed a more efficient method of employing modular construction that may cut construction time in half.

SHIPS IN ACTIVE SERVICE
  • APO Cataphract [SBB-01]

SHIPS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
  • APO Artemisia [SBB-02]

Zephyrus–class carrier

The Zephyrus–class of space carriers is considered by the Astronautikon as one of the most important capital ships of its space navy. This class is also colloquially called the Windrose–class because the ships' names were taken from the names of winds from various compasses. The ship class was first commissioned into the Astronautikon in 1331 XS. 12 of these 3,552 meter-long vessels have been built by the Omospondia. The namesake and first ship of this class is the APO Zephyrus (hull designation number CVP-54), and the final ship of this series is the APO Apeliotes (hull designation number CVP-65). These carriers often form the core of carrier battle groups that rove all around the Sivulon Reach and nearby environs.

A Zephyrus–class carrier has the most power projection out of all of the capital ship classes built by the Perseid Federation, thanks to its wide array of fighters, bombers and other small craft stored in expansive hangar bays. It is also capable of carrying 8 Acantha–class heavy frigates. A Geostratós complement of two regiments is stationed on each carrier. Three TCN-17 exotic matter reactor provide power for the entire vessel, as well as power for its high-output energy shield. Its secondary armaments include its array of SD36, SD38 and SD39 missile batteries, along with a point-defense network of Plutia 900C Mark I plasma autocannons.

However, despite its array of secondary armaments and point-defense networks that it has to defend itself, along with its composite armor and energy shield — it is vulnerable to enemy attack. Due to the importance of the Zephyrus–class, these carriers are a prime target for enemy ships. It has to be accompanied by escort warships, often in a carrier battle group.

Leukothea–class dreadnought

The Leukothea–class dreadnoughts, known for their superior firepower, have been in active service in the Astronautikon since 1329 XS. It is arguably one of the most well-known capital ships in the Omospondia, along with the Zephyrus–class carriers. Capital ships of this class measure 2,886 meters in length. As of now, there are 14 of these ships, with a 15th and final ship to be completed within a year. These dreadnoughts have been a symbol of the Omospondia's military might for many years. Its first ship and namesake is called the APO Leukothea (hull designation number BB-81). Ship names of the Leukothea–class are named after Convocatures of the Perseid Federation.

These dreadnoughts are considerably faster compared to their predecessors—as it uses two TCN-17 exotic matter power plants — and considerably well-armed as well. Their primary armament of 4 Argos Series 11 high output railgun batteries is able to deliver excellent penetration power. It is also equipped with secondary 1328 Series railgun batteries, ASA turrets, a Plutia 800C Mark II autocannon point-defense network, and several missile pod batteries for ship-to-ship combat, deploying missile types that are namely the SD36, SD38 and SD39.

The Leukothea–class is also known to be customizable, able to sport more advanced military hardware in order to improve its strength in battle. However, many of these needed upgrades are still in the drawing board due to lack of interest and lack of funding. However, there have been proposals by engineers that have picked up steam in the past years, such a upgrading the Argos Series 11 railgun batteries to Argos Series 12.

Amazon–class battlecruiser

Whenever a dreadnought could not be used for battle, most likely because of their importance, the Astronautikon would dispatch Amazon–class battlecruisers for combat in their stead. The class has been in active service in the Perseid armed forces since 1335 XS, and 17 of these ships have been built, with a 18th and 19th ship to be finished within the next year. It measures at 2,565 meters in length, slightly smaller and less armored than the Leukothea–class. Ships of this class are the fastest capital ships in the Astronautikon. The first ship and namesake of this class is the APO Amazon (hull designation number BBC-72).

These battlecruisers have nearly the same primary and secondary armaments, as well as point-defense and countermeasures as their dreadnought counterparts. It is also more modular and customizable than other capital ships, able to sport larger gun batteries such as the Argos Series 11 railguns. However, they sacrifice the strength of their armor in exchange for their speed, able to reach fast subluminal velocities thanks to its Pyris T21 Mark VI power plants. They almost always go to combat with escort warships on account of its hull armor.

The cruisers of the Omospondia serve as the core of the Astronautikon's ship fleets. They are able to operate independently from a fleet of vessels — though they can travel in small groups should the need arise — and capable of fulfilling most duties and roles. They are generally understood to have a balance of firepower, speed and armor; which would be enough for them to stand up against a number of foes. Ship crews serving on cruisers are known to be more experienced than their counterparts who serve on capital ships, and they also happen to spare room for a couple of platoons of Geostratós personnel.

Here is a list of cruiser classes that are in active service in the Perseid Federation, arranged in descending order of ship length.

Phyrgia–class assault carrier

Empyreal–class heavy cruiser

The Empyreal–class heavy cruisers were first introduced into the Astronautikon in 1351 XS, with the commissioning of the APO Empyreal [CA-381]. Each ship measures 1,434 meters from bow to stern. These ships have greater firepower and more durable armor and hull structuring compared to other cruisers in service, but at the sacrifice of speed. These ships are also able to be fitted with many offensive and defensive modifications — even capable of mounting two Pandora Mark VI gun batteries. Composite Orosidirum armor could also be installed, along with a low-output energy shield.

Constantinopulos–class assault cruiser

Genesis–class cruiser

These tough cruisers are the chief offensive vessels of the Astronautikon. First commissioned in 1332 XS with the APO Genesis [CM-501], these are the standard warships that are deployed by the Perseid navy in military operations. A ship of this class measures 1,312 meters from bow to stern. There are more than 120 of these ships in active service — the most numerous class among the Omospondia's cruisers. They are known to be well-balanced in terms of offensive and defensive capability, and well-equipped with both weapons and complement. It is capable of being refitted and rearmed to augment its abilities in battle — some upgrades that were installed made some of these ships more powerful than their heavy cruiser counterparts.

Some of these modifications include two powerful Pandora Mark V gun batteries, used on Empyreal–class heavy cruisers and Constantinopoulos–class assault cruisers — and the S88 and S90 missile batteries found in Amazon–class battlecruisers. Fitting and refitting arms and countermeasures on the Genesis–class has been made easier by ship engineers, thanks to new breakthroughs in module design. Another modification that could be installed would be Orosidirum-based composite armor, which is much more durable compared to the standard Thracasite alloys.

Sigma–class light cruiser

This class is arguably one of the most recognizable warship classes in the entire Perseid armed forces. From bow to stern, the Sigma–class's length measures 1,221 meters. It first entered service in the Astronautikon in 1341 XS, with the commissioning of the APO Sigma (hull designation number CL-521). While they may have lighter armor compared to the Genesis–class, they are indeed faster thanks to their exotic matter reactors. Their firepower is not to be underestimated, as the right modifications could raise its lethality to that of an assault cruiser.

The Astronautikon often deploys Sigma–class cruisers in patrol units that go back and forth throughout the territorial space of the Omospondia. However, they may serve in escort and support roles in certain missions.

Oceanos–class escort light cruiser

The Oceanos–class light cruiser is a special cruiser class more capable of fulfilling more diverse roles compared to the Sigma–class of mainline light cruisers. It is slightly shorter in length than the Sigma–class — only 1,197 meters long — but similar in outward appearance and more equipped for escort and support roles. Its first vessel and namesake, APO Oceanos (hull designation number CLDR-85), was commissioned into the Astronautikon in 1348 XS, using a ship design similar to that of the Sigma–class — though with slight modifications. More than 50 of these warships are in active service, with a few more under construction.

It is able to house more hangar bays for its small craft compared to the Sigma–class, and capable of being fitted with more missile batteries. It also utilizes a different honeycomb reinforcement pattern and hull cross bracings compared to the Sigma–class, offering the Oceanos–class slightly more resistance to attack. It also sports more potent exotic matter reactors and improved phase drive navigation systems. A final distinguishing feature would be its bow shape, which seems to be wider compared to the Sigma–class.

Frigates, destroyers, corvettes and fast attack vessels make up the light warships of the Omospondia. These warships are the fastest and most numerous vessels in the Astronautikon. They often fulfill escort and support roles for larger warships and have the capability to intercept enemy ordnance and repel small craft. They are also employed in patrol roles, especially along the major shipping lanes that pass through the Sivulon Reach. However, destroyers and corvettes are able to perform excellent defensive roles, protecting convoys from pirates and other hostile warships.

Light warships of the Perseid Federation are able to dock inside larger warships, particularly in capital ships. They are only capable of housing fewer small craft in their hangar bays compared to other military vessels, and have only small detachments of Geostratós personnel on board that can be accommodated at a time. Weapons, navigation and communications systems tend to focus on the PHAEDRA, UMBRIEL and THETIS naval systems — though other notable naval systems have been used as well.

Listed below are the light warship classes in active service with the Astronautikon, arranged in descending order in terms of ship length.

The Geostratós, like many other planet-side armies, is a mechanized force heavily reliant on vehicles to transport and support them in battle. While the domination of space is a major factor in conducting wars, many engagements have taken place within the direct influence of a terrestrial world such as a planet or a moon. From armored surface vehicles to atmospheric craft, the Perseid armed forces has been provided with several models and variants to adapt to the ever-changing circumstances of planet-side warfare, especially in this day and age.

When it comes to planet-side warfare, the Geostratós make extensive use of air power and lightning tactics to defeat their enemies. However, whenever the circumstances change, they are also known for their quick adaptability. Unconventional tactics and misdirection are some of their hallmarks on the battlefield; however their offensive and defensive capabilities, as well as their technological innovations, are not to be underestimated. Infantry are often supported by mechanized or armored vehicles on the battlefield, providing defensive support, offensive breakthroughs and transportation.

Armored Fighting Vehicles

There are several models of armored fighting vehicles in service with the Geostratós today, each with their respective roles. While they have varying differences in armor, firepower, chassis and other known characteristics, they do have certain qualities in common. Most AFVs of the Perseid Federation can accommodate passengers, though there are dedicated armored personnel carriers (APCs) that are in active service. They also have chassis that often support wheels or treads, but research into the applications of hover vehicles in the military is already expanding.

SDS Multi-Purpose Automotive Armored Vehicle
The Saias Defense Systems (SDS) Multi-Purpose Utility Vehicle, affectionately nicknamed by both Geostratós personnel and by military enthusiasts as the Mupuv, is a 4-wheel light armored multi-purpose vehicle that replaced the outdated General-Purpose Armored Vehicle (Gavee). It serves primarily as an armored light truck, but it may also be fitted for more diverse roles such as infantry support, anti-tank, and escort roles. The Mupuv has become the vehicular backbone of Perseid forces throughout the galaxy.

The Mupuv was purposed primarily for personnel and cargo transport behind front lines, not as a front line fighting vehicle. Like the Gavee, the basic Mupuv has no protection against chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear threats. However, it has been modified to different degrees to adapt to more diverse roles — some of which were never intended for the Mupuv to perform. This was in part alluded to the various weapons and armor kits that were created for the Mupuvs. It may be replaced by future armored vehicle programs.

It is able to seat up to five passengers (including the driver) with a fully enclosed metal cabin without glass windows — having embedded EM-resistant cameras in place. The Mupuv is a self-driving vehicle thanks to its onboard computer — though the driver may choose to take over once manual mode is active. It has an all-wheel drive with independent suspension and helical gear-reduction hubs attached near the top of the wheels to afford greater ground clearance.

S-144 "Mestas" Armored Personnel Carrier
One of the most common Perseid armored vehicles in service, the SDS S-144 Mestas is one of the most reliable APCs in the Geostratós today. It is able to transport an entire platoon of infantry to the battlefield. The S-144 emphasizes reliability, adaptability and mobility in its design — especially in its many variants. The S-144 is capable to maneuvering even in difficult terrain, thanks to its compact yet powerful engine. It is also highly customizable, able to be configured to fit various scenarios with ease.

The S-144 is a fully tracked vehicle with sloped composite armor able to deflect most enemy ordnance. It lacks glass windows, instead making use of six embedded cameras protected by several layers of radiation shielding to prevent them from being disabled by EM threats. Its front makes use of thick sloped armor to deflect enemy ordnance. Emission Control and Stealth Systems (EC/SS) are installed in key areas of the S-144's chassis to help mask its visual, thermal and scanner signature. It is also known for its rapid repair.

Its weapon systems differ from variant to variant. The basic S-144 APC is commonly mounted with a main 40mm ballistic autocannon located at the top of the vehicle, though it may be also fitted with an automatic grenade launcher. A secondary Common Remote Operated Weapons Station (CROWS), usually the 12.7 x 99 mm machine gun, can be stowed away automatically. Other variants are equipped with different primary armaments — such as the S-144 IFV with its 75 mm burst autocannon, and the S-144 AAV with its powerful 45 mm anti-aircraft guns. A number of anti-tank weapons, fixed mounts and other turrets ranging from 30 mm to 120 mm can be mounted on the standard variant, while still having room inside to carry infantry.

The vehicle's driving is primarily handled by its onboard computer, though that may be disabled by the driver at any time. Whenever hazards may present itself, the computer analyzes the situation and makes adjustments in its rout to plot the safest course in only a few milliseconds.

S-15 "Razaki" Tank Destroyer
The Niarkhos Industries S-15 Razaki is a tank destroyer that was a product of the S-1X Project for experimental hover propulsion surface vehicles. It was named in honor of Maj. Athanasios Razaki, a major figure during the middle and later phases of the Perseid Civil War. It is one of the fastest and most mobile armored vehicles in service with the Geostratós, thanks to its powerful engine. It is able to house a crew of 3.

The Razaki's revolutionary hover units have two modes which dictate how the vehicle moves in combat — a unique characteristic for AFVs using the S-1X chassis. In its normal mode, hover units located close to the Razaki's center are active, allowing the tank destroyer to move forwards or backwards. It is in this mode where the Razaki can achieve its highest speeds. However, in its second mode, four compartments located at the sides of the vehicle spread out at an angle of 30°. The hover units within those compartments allow the vehicle to move sideways, allowing for greater maneuverability.

Its primary armament — nestled with a low-profile fixed turret — is the powerful 186mm railgun capable of firing Thrascite high-impact AP rounds, able to puncture the armor of heavy tanks and take out light and medium armored vehicles with a single direct hit. The railgun is able to reload itself through an automatic system in the space of a few seconds. Because the gun is fixed, it can only fire forwards, so the Razaki is also mounted with a stowable 12.7 x 99 mm machine gun and four quad-grenade farms hidden within the turret.

S-9 "Parthenos" Main Battle Tank
A very recognizable Perseid tank, the Niarkhos S-9 Parthenos is the premier main battle tank of the Geostratós. Based on the earlier S-8 Katsidis, it has served the Perseid armed forces for nearly 30 years — a testament to its reliability and adaptability. The Parthenos maintains several of the best features of its predecessor and adds several newer ones to better fit more diverse roles. Mobility, survivability and weaponry were in mind as the Parthenos was designed.

The S-9 MBT and its subsequent updates (S-9A1, S-9A2) has a primary automatic loading 168 mm burst railgun, able to fire in semi-automatic or burst modes. If the gun is set to burst mode, it can fire 3 rounds in approximately 1.3 seconds. Its other weapon system are concealed with weapon bays inside the turret; namely the 12.7 x 99 mm CROWS(S) machine gun, the 7.62 x 39 mm machine gun, and 6 quad-grenade farms. Its cargo bins have been significantly expanded to hold more ammunition — which may be why the turret appears to be positioned more towards the rear than usual.

Improved stealth features are part of the Parthenos' design. EC/SS systems installed throughout the chassis work in tandem with the tank's scanner-inhibiting construction material and angular armor to significantly reduce its visual, thermal and scanner signature. The tank is also painted with low-visibility colors to aid in visual camouflage. Its low-impact rubberized treads help reduce damage to roads and lessen the appearance of track prints. However, the Parthenos also has defensive countermeasures such as reactive armor and specialized active protection systems to withstand enemy attacks — particularly from AP rounds and anti-tank projectiles.

The Parthenos' engine is located at the front of the vehicle, allowing room in the back for passengers, extra cargo and ammunition. This design feature also helps protect the crew. The tank has accommodations for a crew of 4 and an additional 6 passengers. An access hatch opens in the rear of the tank to allow safe entry and exit for personnel.

S-17 "Pyrrha" Main Battle Tank
Another product of the S-1X Project, the SDS S-17 Pyrrha has been said to revolutionize tank warfare for the Geostratós. It is set to replace the S-9 Parthenos in the future in main roles. Because it uses the S-1X chassis, it has two modes that determine how the tank moves in combat — whether forwards and backwards or sideways. Each mode has its own dedicated hover propulsion units. However, a minor difference is that it can extend its two rear hover compartments, allowing an intermediate mode that balances speed with maneuverability.

It has significant improvements over its predecessor in terms of firepower and range, thanks to its main 180 mm automatic loading burst railgun able to fire at targets over 1.5 kilometers away at greater velocities. Its burst mode can fire 3 rounds in approximately 1.1 seconds. Like the Parthenos, its 12.7 x 99 mm CROWS(S) machine gun, 7.62 x 39 mm machine gun, 6 quad-grenade farms are concealed within the turret of the tank — in addition, the basic variant comes with a 55mm "Carcinos" rocket system.

While EC/SS systems, scanner-inhibiting materials and angular construction help to mask its presence, the Pyrrha also has an additional visual camouflage system that makes it harder to see visually. Both the engine and the hover propulsion units run quieter, aiding indirectly in its stealth. However, the tank may be noticed whenever it fires its railgun or launches its rockets — a rationale behind the tank's increased handling and mobility.

The Pyrrha also has a heavy ACV variant (called the S-16 Sophos), which can carry an entire platoon of infantrymen. The Sophos is armed with either a 12.7 x 99 mm CROWS machine gun, a Vasilis grenade launcher or a 60 mm mortar cannon. Because the Sophos lacks the Pyrrha's turret — and is therefore lighter than the latter — it is faster and more heavily armored. In fact, the Perseid Organ of Defense boasted that "the S-16 Sophos is the most protected armored combat vehicle in the Alpha Quadrant." Military experts comment that what they had stated was an exaggeration of the Sophos' armor. Other variants of the Pyrrha — both current and planned — include a SPAAG variant, a support battle tank (SBV) variant and a few anti-infantry variants.

S-55 "Iris" Self-Propelled Artillery
The Artemis Arms S-55 Iris is a powerful self-propelled artillery primarily used in tactical bombardment of enemy targets and for infantry and tank support. In large-scale battles, they would often be positioned at the rear of Perseid formations — often used as support vehicles for the Omospondia's tanks and other armored vehicles. Combined with air power, these artillery pieces attrit the enemy through prolonged or sustained bombardment — usually to force them from their positions and draw them to the mechanized brigades of the Geostratós.

Its basic variant is known for its massive 212 mm high-powered railgun, which can discharge artillery shells over several kilometers. It is also mounted with two AA guns to protect it from aerial attacks. However, it may be fitted with either four 128 mm flak cannons to combat against enemy aircraft or a rocket battery housing sixty 156 mm guided missiles. To stabilize the Iris when firing, a brace extends from its rear and fastens to the ground. While it does have a rear access hatch, it doesn't have room for extra passengers.

Atmospheric Craft

The key to winning planet-side warfare comes from the domination of the skies. Ground-based wars cannot be won without first winning the air. While the Astronautikon's ships can provide more-than-adequate air supremacy, the Astrostratós recognizes the threat posed by terrestrial defenses. As such, the Geostratós' air force is a vital component for planet-side warfare, even in the age of spacefaring vessels.

B-11 "Gordius" Strategic Bomber
Known for its distinctive flying wing design, the Kefalas-Tsakrios B-11 Gordius is a strategic bomber that can enter deep into a certain territory and deliver destruction to ground targets. Its name was attributed to an ancient king who tied a famous knot. It is nearly undetectable by scanners, thanks to its angular design and its scanner-inhibiting composite metamaterials used in its construction. Despite having various protection systems to counter enemy attacks — such as machine guns and flares — it is a vulnerable target for enemy ground placements and fighter craft. Whenever it would go on a mission, it is often escorted by fighter planes.

It is able to carry almost all kinds of bombs and ordnance inside its massive twin bomb bays, and be able to deploy them in a short amount of time. It can enter deep into hostile territory quickly and deploy its ordnance, making the B-11 a vital part of Perseid power projection in the air. The bays can be set to release a certain number of bombs at a time, reducing the risk of collateral damage to other structures nearby its target. This feature is especially useful in strategic missions taking place in urban settlements.

Its engines are hidden deep within the B-11 to reduce its thermal signature dramatically, which aids it in its stealth. At low-light conditions or in near-complete darkness, the bomber can conceal itself visually in a limited way to hide through active camouflage systems. They don't function in broad daylight, however.

Ships

While there is a limited number of worlds in the Perseid Federation that contain water on its surface, the Geostratós recognizes that naval warfare is a vital part of their military doctrine. Naval vessels are able to transport more troops than ground vehicles or aircraft and provide adequate defense, especially on key worlds inhabited by billions of citizens.

While certain warship classes of the Astronautikon can also travel on water, there are dedicated water craft as well. The official prefix designation for wet-navy ships of the Perseid Federation is Hydronaús Polemikos Omospondia (HPO). Common characteristics of Perseid military water craft include their abilities to submerge underwater and to become amphibious vessels.

Argonaut

The Argonaut is the standard tactical fighter spacecraft of the Astronautikon, similar in role to the starfighters of other interstellar states. They are often part of the complement of Perseid warships, and serve an offensive role in space warfare — particularly to intercept and engage other attack spacecraft and harass warships. Most models are capable of operating in atmospheric and exoatmospheric environments, though the PK-33 Ashura may be an exception. An Argonaut can be often found in a group of five informally called an Argonaut pack. A pack is composed of one Alpha Argonaut — flown by the pilot himself — and four semi-autonomous Argonaut drones operated through the pilot's neural interface.

It has an unorthodox design that can be divided into two main sections: the thyrsos, which is the main spaceframe of the Argonaut that houses the main propulsion units and the engine (as well as the cockpit in Alpha Argonauts), and the tetrapterai, the four appendages that house the secondary propulsion units, stowable autocannons, space-to-space missiles and other armaments. Argonaut drones have a fifth appendage on its underside that can couple with any of the four appendages of the Master Argonaut.

The Alpha Argonaut's cockpit can be accessed by the pilot through a hatch located at the top of the thyrsos. It lacks the tinted window found on other small craft, making use of embedded cameras installed in the Argonaut's exterior to prevent the pilot from being spotted by enemy fighters and eliminated. It is connected to the rest of the thyrsos through its gyroscopic frame, which keeps the cockpit level while in cruise. The gyroscope may be locked by the pilot during dogfights. The cockpit has room for one pilot and one passenger, though some models only have room for the pilot.

The thyrsos has many of the vital components of the Argonaut, housing the spacecraft's powerful engine and its four propulsion units. These make the Argonaut the fastest spacecraft in the Perseid Federation without a superluminal drive. While it doesn't have an FTL drive (though it can be modified to accommodate one that makes the Argonaut travel short interstellar distances), it has an FTL drive interdictor that it can use against small ships in order to keep its target in the system long enough to be eliminated or captured.

The tetrapterai is composed of four appendages called pteron (pl. pterai) that are hinged to the thyrsos. Each pteron can be inclined outward at a maximum angle of 62°, and has compartments for weapons and countermeasures. The standard weapons of the Argonaut are three plasma autocannons that can be stowed inside the pteron. Each pteron also has an arsenal of space-to-space missiles that can take down enemy spacecraft over great distances without being seen. The missiles can be launched by tilting all four pterai forward.

In battle, the five Argonaut units in a pack can be coupled together into a single larger unit. The purpose of this may be to mislead enemy detection systems, since their scanners show the pack as one unit, and as a way to traverse vast distances over a shorter period of time. Once the pack is in attack range for their primary cannons, they can separate into five units, aiming to take the enemy force by surprise. An Argonaut drone cannot couple to an Alpha Argonaut unless both are of the same model.

Argonauts in general are lightly armored, and can be easily destroyed by enemy fire. They make up for this handicap with their speed, maneuverability and stealth. Its incredible turn rate gives the Argonaut excellent mobility, even in dense asteroid fields. In addition to this, later models that have been produced in the past few decades have included more durable metamaterials for their high-density spaceframes. Finally, it has advances stealth capabilities that hide the Argonaut from visual and thermal detection, as well as make electromagnetic and acoustic detection much harder.

PK-32 Scandia
The Halcyon-Argyra Aerospace PK-32 Scandia is a space superiority tactical Argonaut. While the Scandia was primarily designed to enforce space supremacy, it is also capable of performing reconnaissance and surface attack roles. Halcyon-Argyra developed its spaceframe and weapons systems, while its partner Pygmalion Defense on the power plant, propulsion units and neural integration systems. Its strength lies in its stealth and maneuverability — it can engage and eliminate targets over great distances while concealing its presence.

PK-36 Makhaira
The Pygmalion PK-36 Makhaira is a multirole tactical Argonaut, and a primary complement in Astronautikon warships. It is able to perform varied roles such as intercepting bomber spacecraft, carrying out attacks against surface targets and torpedoing enemy warships. The Makhaira is the most produced Argonaut in the Perseid Federation, and the only one available for export to other countries. It has key features that include torpedo bays and five 60 mm plasma autocannons located inside each pteron.

PK-33 Ashura
A marvel of astronautic military engineering, the Halcyon-Argyra PK-33 Ashura is an exoatmospheric interceptor Argonaut. Its primary role is to intercept enemy bomber craft, cutters, corvettes and frigates — as such, it is one of the fastest and most maneuverable Argonauts ever built. It is also one of the most successful modern Argonauts, with several victories mostly achieved from pirate engagements. It proved to be so successful that a transatmospheric assault variant, the PK-33M Harpy Ashura, was created for offensive roles.

Hetairos

The Hetairos (pl. Hetairoi), nicknamed as the Het by pilots, is a multirole combat powered armor suit serving in the Astrostratós, utilized mainly for surface warfare. Its primary role is to serve as a support unit for Geostratós infantrymen and for the Astronautikon's space marines, though they are also equipped for assault and offensive missions. The cockpit has room for one pilot and one passenger, two in certain models.

Its structure has a humanoid design, and makes use of high-density composite metamaterial frames. It is heavily armored, able to deflect anti-tank or anti-armor rounds. It also has limited VTOL capabilities, with limited amounts of power directed to its propulsion units — though that doesn't impede its maneuverability when using it. Its height varies between 12 and 20 meters depending on the model. Standard variants of Hetairos models are equipped with a ballistic projectile gun with an attached grenade launcher, and a pistol and knife as sidearms. When hovering, stabilizers installed in the legs open up to keep the suit level — though more recent models do not rely on stabilizers anymore.

The cockpit is located in the torso of the Hetairos, and can be accessed by entering through the head. There are no windows utilized by the suit to see, instead making use of embedded cameras in the head, and auxillary cameras located in the torso. The suit is primarily controlled using a neural interface synchronized with the pilot's Metaverse eye, but the cockpit still makes use of holographic instrument panels. The pilots tactical data and experience is recorded by the neural interface and can be forwarded to other Hetairos pilots.

The Hetairos is a highly modular unit, able to support many pieces of equipment designed for it. Many of these loadouts come in packages. Some common examples used in many Hetairos divisions include the Hetairos Ancillary Combat Package (HACP), the Hetairos Space Loadout (HSL), and the VTOL Ancillary Module (VTOLAM). Many of these equipments are designed to be compatible with all Hetairos models currently in production. Some modules are exclusive to certain models such as shoulder guns and semi-autonomous mobile gun drones.

HT-90 Toxotes
The SDS HT-90 Toxotes is the mainline Hetairos of the Geostratós, capable of filling most support and tactical roles in combat. It is known for its reliability and versatility, especially with experienced Hetairos pilots. The Toxotes is perhaps the most produced Hetairos model currently in production, and a common sight in Geostratós ORBATs. Because of its relatively small size compared to other Hetairoi, the Toxotes cannot support shoulder guns. However, its HACP includes thicker armor packs, more VTOL propulsion units and missile pods attached to its legs.

HT-91 Euryale
The Kouros Dynamics Company HT-91 Euryale is an assault Hetairos primarily designed for carrying out offensive operations. It is mainly operated by pilots of the Marine Corps in both the Geostratós and the Astronautikon due to its incredible survival rate and maneuverability. It can sustain longer flights compared to the Toxotes thanks to its greatly improved VTOL capability, helping it last in exoatmospheric combat. Its armor is slightly heavier than the Toxotes, but that doesn't impede its maneuverability. Many shoulder weapon modules have been produced for the Euryale, which are often included with the suit's HACP and HSL packs.

HHT-8 Arcturus
The Dioscuri Defense Armory HHT-8 Arcturus is a heavily armored Hetairos primarily in service with the Geostratós. It is known for its robust appearance and design, as well as for its immense size (measuring 19.7 meters tall). It has room for surface-to-air homing missiles in its legs, making it a formidable anti-air support weapon. Powerful coilguns, railguns and high-powered flak cannons can be mounted on the shoulders of the Arcturus to further augment its ranged capabilities.

Didymus

The Didymus (pl. Didyma) is a transformable powered armor suit in the Astrostratos, generally in use with the Geostratós. It is a relatively new piece of military equipment, only having been introduced more than 30 years ago. The program was the result of a successful project that was made separate from the Hetairos program. Its usual appearance resembles that of a Hetairos, but it can transform into a small craft in seconds. This gives it an advantage in combat, as it can participate in orbital space battles.

Its primary mode, informally called the Hetairos mode, is similar to the Hetairos in structure and roles — but unlike the Hetairos, the Didymus utilizes embedded autocannons within its arms for ranged combat. It still uses a pistol and knife as secondary and close combat weapons respectively, however, and it is also able to operate a Hetairos rifle. A Didymus has more thrusters than a Hetairos, and can also fly for longer periods of time. Its top flight speed is hampered in endoatmospheric conditions due to the air resistance it creates. Like the Hetairos, the cockpit is located in the torso of the Didymus.

Its secondary mode is that of a multirole small craft, able to engage targets in the air and in orbital space. This form is much more agile than its Hetairos form. Despite its colloquial name, Argonaut mode, it should not be construed with an Argonaut. Its endoatmospheric and exoatmospheric flight capabilities are impressive, even though its speed can barely match that of an Argonaut unit. When the Didymus transforms from its primary mode to its secondary mode and vice versa, an energy field envelops the unit so it doesn't become vulnerable to enemy fire — the field deactivates when the transformation is complete. Access to the cockpit is available in its Hetairos mode, but not in its Argonaut mode.

The Didymus has limited modularity, and can only support some Hetairos equipment. This may be the reason why the Perseid military is reluctant to produce Didyma in larger numbers. However, military contractors are currently testing prototype modules for its secondary mode, and it already has its own exclusive equipment, such as the Didymus Ancillary Gun Package (DAGP) used in its secondary mode.

DM-5 Xiphos
The KDC DM-5 Xiphos is a multirole tactical Didymus of the Astrostratós, and the third Didymus model series currently in production. The Xiphos is the successor of the DM-4 Spatha, another Didymus made by KDC. It stands at 17.2 meters tall, slightly taller than the Euryale Hetairos. It is known for its impressive maneuverability in its primary mode and its incredible speed. It contains four 92mm high-velocity autocannons concealed within its arms, and can support low-to-medium power shoulder guns. It is the first Didymus to support a Hetairos Semi-Autonomous Gun Drone (HSAGD) module, which can only be activated in its primary mode.

Theognosis is the dominant religion of the Perseid Federation. According to a certain survey conducted by the University of Nova Megara in 1363 XS, 58% of those surveyed identify as Theognostic. The theology of Theognosis is both polytheistic and pantheistic, and adherents of Theognosis recognize the major deities that make up the Octakatheon as well as other gods and goddesses that serve a lesser role. Some deities had dominion over aspects of nature while others ruled over abstract concepts.

The Chrilogos, translated in Universal as the 'Lord's Word,' is the sacred scriptures of Theognosis. It is divided into 74 sections called books, each with a varying number of chapters and verses. These sacred texts are considered to be filled with doctrines that defined Theognostic theology and theogony, though there are certain sections known to be poetic in nature such as stories and hymns. Its complement, the Chronicles, is primarily composed of the stories of the deities and their dealings with mortals. The Chronicles is divided into 48 books with varying numbers of chapters and verses as well. For convenience, some Theognostic publishing companies have placed both the Chrilogos and the Chronicles in a single book.

According to Theognostic belief, there was once a primeval sea called Mu, from which the god Nephos willed himself into existence. He then proceeded to create the universe from the primeval mud, Muat. He also created the nous, the aspect of reason and knowledge, and gave it to both deities and beings, giving the blessings and curses that come with this power. However, evil willed itself into existence in the form of the pereios, which tempted the beings to develop hubris. This displeased the gods, and Nephos punished them by taking away their immortality. However, the deities were lax as well in preventing the pereios from affecting them, and as a result were also subject to its influence.

The deities were known to be immortal, transcendent and absolute in power; yet they were certainly not all-good, because of the influence of the pereios. They sometimes acted like mortals and had mortal vices and tendencies. They often work together to take care of the universe and everything in it; but at times certain gods would be opposed to others, which may result in great disputes that may even break out in the physical world. To prevent conflict and strife from breaking out in Macepheles, Nephos instituted laws that governed the gods in settling disputes. However, they may still support their respective sides on the situation.

Theognostic eschatology states that the universe will be cleansed by fire in order to purify it of the pereios, and restore it to its former perfection. The gods will judge the souls of mortals — both living and deceased — according to how they lived their lives in the world. If their character and actions in the world were worthy of their divine origin, they will be spared from the cleansing of the universe and be translated into Macepheles for a time. If not, then they would be condemned to be destroyed with the pereios.

Octakatheon

The Octakatheon are the eight primary deities of Theognosis. It is a pantheon composed of eight gods and goddesses, namely Nephos, Achantos, Chara, Sophos, Pyrrha, Phyllidus, Avanna and Pythos. The Octakatheon (save for Achantos and Pythos) live in Macepheles, which is equated to heaven. The Octakatheon Creed treats all eight of them as primary gods and goddesses. On the other hand, four of these gods (Nephos, Achantos, Sophos and Pythos) are worshipped as primary deities by the Synodia, while the others are treated as minor deities.

Nephos
Nephos, also known as Ahr, is the god of the heavens and of creation. He is considered to be the chief of the gods. He is often depicted as a giant with the universe and everything in it as his garment. The Chrilogos states that before Nephos as conceived, the universe was formed only of the dark chaotic waters of Mu. Nephos willed himself into existence from the waters; and after he forcibly created himself, spat into the waters. Where the spit landed, light came forth for the first time.

Nephos was so tall that the sea of Mu, which was over a thousand miles deep, came only to his waist. His head scraped the sky. Through his word he parted the waters into two divisions — the waters above that formed the cosmic ocean above and the waters below. These lower waters soaked the ground of the former seabed of Mu, forming a vast plain of mud. From this mud, the Muat, Nephos began to sculpt the entire universe. From stars to planets, moons to asteroids, he took much time to fashion each and every one.

From the remaining Nephos he created other gods and goddesses, and then made the upright beings. To crown his act of creation, he created and presented the nous to his fellow deities and to the beings, giving both the blessings and curses that come with it. Having created the universe, Nephos smiled — seeing that it was very good — and rested. His titanic body forms the base of the heavens, known as Macepheles, where all other gods live on.

He is attributed to have made the universe in six days and rested on the seventh, therefore instituting the weekly cycle. This is why Perseids take one day off — generally the seventh day — as a day of rest, and many of them go to the temple to worship the gods.

Achantos
Otherwise known as Akuhanul, he is the god of the earth and the underworld. He is one of two deities in the Octakatheon not living in heaven. He is depicted wearing an extravagant robe and sitting on a golden throne, symbolizing his wealth. Achantos lives in Makophos (or Makufu), the underworld according to Theiōgnostic theology. He is said to have domain over the souls of the dead. His wife and consort, the minor goddess Tukhana, is tasked with transporting the souls of the dead to Makophos, and judging them for what they did when they were alive. Later theological insight says that the dead that are righteous are translated to Macepheles as an eternal reward.

According to certain theologians, Makophos is divided into two main areas, with a third area in between. The first realm is Elysium (also called Kakh) — the realm of the virtuous. Here the souls of the righteous come to relish in paradise forever. The waters of Elysium are as sweet as nectar, and the trees always bear fruit. The fields smell of rich lavender, and are flowered all over. One need only wish for something, and it shall be his. In later theological works, it says that Elysium was later brought up to Macepheles by Nephos. This version of Elysium had in addition a massive city for the righteous to live in, though they can go out to the countryside to build their homes.

The second realm is Sachthetes (from the Fouranos word Sakfet), the realm of the wicked. It is the lowest of the realms of Makophos. Here the souls of sinners are to be punished for near-eternity, with the punishment made to match the sinner's crime; later books say that the punishment also is made to match the degree in which a sin was committed. For example, petty thieves were punished by having their thumbs cut off so that they can't steal, but those who have committed more heinous thefts have to suffer eternal deprival in addition, with anything and everything out of their reach. An adulterer is stuck with a constant demonic thirst, but the water that they drink will cut their throats like thorns and burn to the touch of their mouths; and so on.

In between is Metes (from Met), the realm of the suspended. It is more or less equal to purgatory in other religions. Here the dead who have not received absolution to either Elysium or Sachthetes wander aimlessly throughout this realm — numbly repeating their favorite activities in life, but receiving no pleasure from it. A soul may only move on when their loved ones pray for their absolution into Elysium on their behalf after their death. The importance of intercessory prayer in Theognosis cannot be undervalued, as temples often have priests that pray on behalf of the dead in Metes so that they can go to Elysium.

Because Achantos has dominion over the earth, he also has dominion over its mineral riches and metals. As such, he is considered the richest of the gods, and people will pray to him for wealth and prosperity. When people — especially Theognostics — make mention of their wealth, they will often tap their foot on the ground to give recognition to Achantos.

Chara
Chara, which is a diminutive from the name Kakhanun, is the goddess of the waters. When Nephos created the deities, he had run out of clay when he was about to create Chara. He solved this by creating a god from a puddle of water remaining from the Mu. He also used this puddle to create her twin brother, Erythrus. She is not only the goddess of the seas, but also water incarnate. Thus, she also has domain over rivers, lakes, ponds and streams. She is able to submerge in any body of water and emerge from any other body of water like a portal.

Chara by extension controls the fish catches and the storms at sea. When a ship's captain has given proper homage to Chara, she creates smooth seas and good winds. If the crew fails to appease her, she responds by creating tempests and storms that threaten to destroy their ships. A common practice to appease her would be to paint eyes on ships. These Ophthalmocharai guarantee sailors that she will be watching over them as they journey through the waters. This practice has also extended to spacefaring vessels — both on civilian and military craft — though the latter may be called Ophthalmopyrrhai, after Pyrrha.

However, she is known to have a short temper; which may have put her into controversies with her fellow deities or with mortal beings. It was said that once, Chara got into an argument with Achantos and flooded the lands to spite him. This flood covered all the earth, even the tops of the highest mountains — nearly killing every living thing. Sophos commanded the upright beings to build an ark, but only a few obeyed his words while the others laughed in scorn. Both the animals and the upright beings who had heeded Sophos' command were saved — the rest who disobeyed were swept away by Chara's wrath. The other gods also intervened, and Chara relented. The seas flowed back into their berths and the land was dry once again. The Great Deluge is spoken of in a certain section of the Chrilogos, the Chronicles and in other ancient texts.

Sophos
Sophos (also called Iahmesu) is the god of wisdom and protection. He is married to Pyrrha, goddess of war — by which he also became the god of strategic warfare. The owl is attributed to him. He serves as the keeper of records for the gods in Macepheles — in fact, the Chrilogos was attributed to divine inspiration form Sophos. He was made to have exceptional memory, able to remember everything that he had ever seen or heard, and thus is the smartest of any god. However, he is not considered as an omniscient deity. Through his wisdom, he gives protection to upright beings through what is called common sense. He also gives protection by using his silver tongue to convince other gods to give a mortal their blessings.

He is a patron of the sciences and of history. As such, temples dedicated to Sophos have libraries or are built within proximity to libraries — an example of this is the Temple of Sophos in Firanza, built next to the Theophilite Library. Each published work increases his knowledge, thus collectively improving his favor with mortals. As such, efforts are made to expand and preserve all published material as much as possible. To adapt to the technological environment, theologians have stated that his knowledge isn't limited to written works published on paper.

Pyrrha
Also called Ishizu, Pyrrha is the goddess of war, violence and bloodshed — and the wife of Sophos. Pyrrha was named after the red Muat from which she was fashioned from. She is known to be fiery and passionate in all matters, and hot-headed as well. Most works of art depict her in the armor of an ancient soldier, with a javelin and shield in hand. She is said to give knowledge of tactical maneuvers to generals, and to alert soldiers when a projectile or an enemy weapon is about to strike them.

However, despite giving these blessings to soldiers in war, she becomes agitated if there are no war fought for long periods, and will sometimes try to create diplomatic incidents to provoke a war. Often her husband Sophos will try to convince her out of doing this, with varying outcomes. In other times, Sophos will fulfill his duties as god of protection and tell Pyrrha exactly how to keep the most soldiers who follow their faith safe from harm.

Phyllidus
Phyllidus is the god of nature and the son of Achantos and Tukhana. He is equated to the god Nukuhanu, found in Firasai mythology. Many forest flora and fauna are attributed to him. He is often depicted with a garment of leaves and with a small harp. According to the Chrilogos, Phyllidus was born with the ability to make the world vibrant and green. Wherever he goes, any plant will bloom. All trees will bear fruit, and all bushes will become heavy with berries. He is also capable of bringing any plant back to life simply by touching it.

As he is the god of nature, he is also the god of life. Because of this, he is married to Avanna, goddess of fertility. It is through him that people are given vitality or have it taken from them. Where his wife is tasked with making a woman able to bear child, it is the job of Phyllidus to create the child that will be born to them. The same applies to animals as well. He and Avanna begat the nymphs, maidens who assisted their father in taking care of nature.

Avanna
Avanna, also called as Nakhaman, is the goddess of love, beauty and fertility — and by extension of all things related to love and romance, most especially marriage. She is given this task because she was given the pure essence of beauty when she was formed, when Nephos ground up several gems to make her from the Muat. She is often depicted with a simple but beautiful garment, which alludes to love being simplistic in its nature. She longs to see the world become beautiful, but is at odds with Pyrrha because the latter spoils this beauty with the brutality of war, which in her opinion disfigures mortal beings.

She was given in marriage to her husband, Phyllidus, and gave birth to the nymphs. Phyllidus is tasked with creating the child that will be born to a couple, but it is her job to make them able to bear a child. If a couple is unable to bear children, they may be seen as having fallen out of Avanna's favor, and are recommended to pray to her for forgiveness. If they have twins or triplets — or in rare cases quadruplets and quintuplets — they are seen to be favored by her.

In order to ensure that children will be born, she can also cause people to fall in love with each other. She does this by looking down at two people and smiling at the both of them. They will immediately notice each other and fall in love, at first sight if possible. This is why some people pray to Avanna that the one they love will also fall in love with him/her. At other times, she will simply make two children that she has fated to fall in love with each other when the opportune time comes.

Formerly, Avanna was the goddess of both aspects of love — the physical and the spiritual. However, the attribute of physical love was later given by theologians to Leukothea.

Pythos
Pythos, also called Kunhaman, is a mystic, an artist, a futureseer and a hermit — being the only other god besides Achantos to not live in heaven. He is associated with music, art, history, poetic inspirations and prophecy. Pythos is often depicted having two faces — one on the front of his head and one on the back. The backwards face sees the past, and the forward face sees the future. He is said to live as a hermit that wanders the cosmos, constantly searching for new inspiration to create. Prophets, seers and oracles are attributed to Pythos.

He is said to have created each of the instruments that existed in ancient times, and that he also inspires musicians to make newer instruments. The lute, the harp and the cymbals are some of the instruments attributed to him. According to the Chrilogos, every song that comes out of a musician's pen was first created by Pythos and given to the musician by divine inspiration — though historical experts may argue that the Chrilogos refers to religious music as opposed to secular music. He along with Sophos have inspired literary works as well — the Chronicles are attributed to the divine inspiration of Pythos by adherents.

He is also the original futureseer, and knows how time will unfurl. His field of vision spans from the beginning of time all the way to the end. It is possible to find him, the Chrilogos says, as he lives as a hermit — but he is very hard to track and find since he constantly moves from world to world, occasionally stopping to rest from his travels. If one does find him however, then they could ask him anything about the future — when will you die, when will the next war break out, whether the harvest will be fruitful, etc. etc.

Theognostics believe that the world he most often frequents is Daphne, the moon of Xenia and Theris — though such statements have never been found anywhere in the Chrilogos or in the Chronicles. Daphne happens to be the location of a massive sanctuary dedicated to him, known as the Pythian Sanctuary. Pilgrims frequently visit there to inquire the Oracle of Pythia, often to ask the oracle about what lies in store in the future.

Minor Deities

Aside from the Octakatheon, there are also several other minor gods and goddesses that make up the Theognostic pantheon. They are either associates of the Octakatheon or assigned to certain things.

Cephes
He is the god of happiness in the Theognostic pantheon, and by extension the god of games and of revelries. Cephes is attributed with all kinds of fermented drink, especially wine. He is believed to encourage mortals to be happy in whatever circumstances that may befall them, and longs to see the world be filled with happiness. While he resides in Macepheles, he sometimes comes down to earth to visit the nymphs. He can even hear the distant cry of someone in grief and come down in person to console him/her.

A festival is held through the Perseid Federation once a year, known as the Imera tis Kefi, the Day of High Spirits. Celebrants party without ceasing from high noon to midnight in the spirit of Kefi (high spirits) on the 36th day of the 5th month in the Xenian Standard Calendar. The festivities are often characterized by revelries being held in honor of Cephes, in gratitude for bringing happiness to the universe. However, according to tradition, the Day of High Spirits should not descend into debauchery, lest they defile both Kefi and the gods.

Eusphoros
Eusphoros is the god of light in the Theognostic pantheon of deities, the messenger of the gods, and the personification of light itself. He was thought to have been one of the first deities to have been created by Nephos. His depictions show him holding an orb of light in his right hand, and a ram's horn in his left. He is often associated with the stars that fill the night sky. He is known to be the most famous of Leukothea's extramarital lovers.

He is often depicted with four wings attached to his back, which give Eusphoros tremendous speed. He is the fastest of the gods, able to travel from one end of the universe to the other in the twinkling of an eye. He is assisted by the innumerable astrides, his offspring with Leukothea. They are spiritual beings believed to act as attendants or agents of Eusphoros — sometimes even messengers in his stead. The astrides have two wings instead of four, and often manifest themselves to mortals in their humanoid form.

Eleftheria
She is the goddess and personification of freedom, liberty and of conscience. The eagle and the sparrow are attributed to her. Eleftheria was the one who convinced Nephos to create mortals with free choice, as he initially planned to create them without their will. She is often described as passionate about freedom, and often times she inspires people to throw off the shackles of oppression to achieve liberty. She is often depicted with a key in her hand, which can but only unlock chains. A statue in her honor graces the tip of the dome of the Eccleserion, showing that the Omospondia respects and believes in freedom and liberty for all. Her importance as a goddess began to elevate during and after the Perseid Civil War.

Erythrus
Erythrus is the god of fire and the twin sibling of Chara. Nephos created him from the water that was used to create his sister, but his body was covered in flames, and that became the personification of his being. Like Chara, he was short-tempered, and would often begin fights with other gods and goddesses. However, he had become corrupted by his fierce anger, and was banished to the Abyss, a realm even lower than Makophos. There he was imprisoned with adamantine chains that cannot be unlocked by any key — not even Eleftheria's.

According to the Chrilogos and the Chronicles in various verses, there will come a time when he will escape from his prison and bring calamity on the world to spite Nephos himself. Where Chara brought the cataclysm of water on mortals, Erythrus will bring the cataclysm of fire, where the flames are so great that even Macepheles will be covered in thick smoke. The gods will succeed in restraining him, but at the destruction of the heavens and of the earth. This is described as the apocalypse that will cleanse the universe of the pereios, and usher in a new world where it will not be allowed to rise again.

Leukothea
She is the goddess of sexual love, passion and fertility — and the sister of Avanna. Leukothea was the result of a compromise to an argument between philosophers and theologians. Philosophers saw no sense for Avanna to have a lust for other men — as Perseid society frowned on such things — while theologians saw that it was in harmony with the Chrilogos on the basis of her physical beauty. Eventually, the attributes of sexual love and pleasure that were once Avanna's was transferred to this new minor deity, Leukothea.

Leukothea was named after the pearls that were ground by Nephos to make her from the Muat, in the same way as her sister was. She was described to have fair ivory skin, the ideal of Perseid beauty. They were both created at the same time by Nephos, both as fully mature women. However, there were immediate differences. Avanna was created with clothes on, while Leukothea was created fully nude.

Sometimes, Avanna's blessing could be delayed in the minds of some people, and so they pray to Leukothea to hasten it. Leukothea has two choices in this matter: either to press Avanna into giving that person her blessing, or blessing that person herself. The latter is often described in the Chrilogos to be riskier — both on Leukothea's part and that of the person asking for her blessing — as it invites the pereios to exert its influence.

Nephos feared that their beauty may cause strife among the gods, so he married them off to two male gods. Avanna was wed to Phyllidus, while Leukothea was married to Thrasos, who was a humble god. She was dissatisfied with her husband, despite him forging beautiful jewelry that further enhanced her beauty. This resulted in her seeking for other lovers, most notably Eusphoros, the god of light.

In one story found in the Chronicles, she intoxicated Sophos with a certain nectar stolen from Elysium, and had sexual intercourse with him afterwards. When Pyrrha found out about Leukothea's trickery, she was outraged. She told Thrasos about this, and the two proceeded to tear Leukothea into two. Nephos stopped this, but Leukothea's vagina had already been widened — because Pyrrha and Thrasos had pulled her by the legs in opposite directions. Leukothea was spared, but her genitals are to discharge blood every lunar cycle as eternal punishment, in order to purify her of Sophos' semen. Because the female mortals that Nephos created were made partly from the remaining pearls from creating Leukothea, women had to suffer this purification as well.

Temples dedicated to Leukothea are well-known for their practice of ritual prostitution. Adherents worshipping Leukothea as their primary deity appease her by having intercourse with the temple prostitutes. These haven't been documented very well in places where the worship of Leukothea was known to be prevalent. Because of her infidelity, those who cheat on their spouses are summarily called leukotheans by others.

Midos
Midos is the god of health and well-being. He is often depicted with a rod in his hand and a snake coiling around it. Whenever someone has fallen sick, it is either because he/she fell out of favor with Midos or was being tormented by the pereios. Thus, people often pray to him in order that their well-being and their health be spared. Doctors and physicians are often seen by Theognostics to be the instruments of Midos that they or their loved ones may be healed. However, should one be found to deliberately abuse his/her body, Midos may not completely heal that person; instead he preserves a semblance of the damage done in order to remind the person of the abuses made.

The Midan laws of health can be found in the Chrilogos, which are nourishment, activity, clean water, exposure to natural light, moderation, fresh air, repose, and trust in his power to heal. According to Theognostic doctrine, if the Midan laws are kept often and followed by heart, then a person will be in good health for the rest of his/her life.

Thrasos
Thrasos is the god of craftsmen and artisans, and husband of Leukothea. He is known to give mortals fire in behalf of the gods, but he is most well known for forging the tools of the gods, such as Pyrrha's mighty spear and Eleftheria's key. He was also known for building the dwellings of Macepheles, which were mighty mansions where the gods lived in. Despite his impressive creations, which were told to be uncountable by mortal beings, he was humble and meek in dealing with others, and often attributes his gift to Nephos — who he says gave him the power to create.

To please his wife — who was given to him by Nephos in marriage — he forged a necklace made of the rarest pearls, bracelets made of midite arranged in ornate patterns, and earrings embellished with the rarest of gems. Leukothea's beauty was greatly enhanced by the jewelries that her husband made her, but yet she remained unfaithful, and continued to seek out for other lovers, most of the time without Thrasos' knowledge.

Tukhana
Tukhana (also spelled Tuchana) is the goddess of guidance and of judgment, and the wife and consort of Achantos. Often she is depicted with a scale in her hand, and with her eyes plucked out. She is tasked with guiding the souls of the dead to Makophos. While Sophos offers guidance to the living, Tukhana offers guidance and safe passage for the dead. Loved ones of the deceased often pray to her for the absolution of their dead to Elysium, and the prayers are then passed on to Achantos for him to grant or deny.

Later theological insight gives her the power to judge the dead individually. Their character and their subsequent actions are being weighed on a scale. Should a dead person be found wanting by Tukhana, she then decides a verdict which is then being enforced by Achantos. Each person is judged by her according to what he has done during his life. A sinner is given a punishment proportionately equal to the sin, and sent to Sachthetes or Metes. However, before the final cleansing, she and the other gods judge the world and decide on their fate: either be spared by the gods for a time in Macepheles while the cleansing of the universe takes place, or be eternally destroyed along with the pereios.

The government of the Perseid Federation, like many governments in the galaxy, has political factions that together formed and shaped Perseid politics over several centuries. While the government operates with a multi-party system, two or three parties would come to dominate Perseid politics throughout its history. In contemporary Perseid politics, two parties have gained preeminence in the government: the Progressive Party and the Orthodox Party. Other major parties and independent members of the government are also in attendance in the legislature and in the executive branch.

The Perseid Federal Charter is silent about political parties, and doesn't formally address the issue of political factions and groups. The first political parties in what would be the Omospondia emerged during the establishment of human colonies in the Sivulon Reach, though the concept of parties itself originates much farther back. As the interstellar colonies developed, political factions began to emerge among the colonial leadership — due to conflicting views on certain domestic issues and the initiatives made to solve those issues.

The founding of the Perseid Federation saw a new problem emerging in the fledgling government. Due to vast interstellar distances, the government it seemed was divided into several parties that varied from system to system, and from territory to territory. Many of them had similarities to other parties that were in other systems and territories, and they all had representation in the government. Over 200 parties were large enough to have representation in the early Ecclesia, each of them occupying at least 1-4 seats. To solve this, coalitions were organized among like-minded parties, which later allowed for the amalgamation of those parties into much larger parties. Thanks to better superluminal communications, these "megaparties" were able to survive.

However, this new party system wasn't immune to schisms that were caused by minor ideological differences, internal leadership disputes, and interplanetary and interstellar distances. Many contemporary parties that make up the composition of the Perseid government were the result of schisms or amalgamations.

Progressive Party

The Progressive Party is one of the two major political parties in the Omospondia. Ever since its establishment, the Progressives quickly rose to become the main opposition of the Orthodox Party, and the two parties came to dominate Perseid politics — particularly after the Perseid Civil War. The Progressive Party has positioned itself as the liberal party on domestic issues, supporting social justice, social progressivism, a mixed economy and social welfare. Currently the Progressives hold the majority of seats in both the Gerousia and the Boule.

The Progressive Party was established because of the dissatisfaction of certain Perseid politicians and intellectuals, who saw that Perseid society wasn't progressing technologically and socially. Using liberalism, social justice and progress as a platform, they attracted the attention of voters, who at the time were dissatisfied with the parties that bickered in the Ecclesia. Five years after its founding in 840 XS, the Progressives absorbed other center-left and centrist parties and became the main opposition to the Orthodoxes and the Themelians.

The Perseid Civil War served to discredit and disband the Themelians, who saw the rebellious states as traitors to the cause of the Omospondia. The Progressives garnered much attention from both loyalists and revolutionaries during the war, due to their anti-war stance. By the end of the war, the large void that was left by the Themelians was quickly filled in by Progressives and Orthodoxes, with the Progressives occupying 72% of the seats in the Ecclesia — the largest percentage that would ever be occupied in the Perseid legislature by any single party at any point in history.

Through the approved appropriations of successive Progressive-dominated Archonates, scientific and technological progress was greatly encouraged by the government, and social justice and equality was more realized. However by the turn of the 10th century XS, the Progressives had gradually lost seats in the Ecclesia to the Orthodoxes and to centrist and center-right blocs — partly due to the rise of a new kind of conservatism and due to the incompetency of the party in solving the Firasai migrant crisis.

In recent years the Progressive Party has been steadily regaining its previous influence in the Ecclesia, especially since the party became lightly more centrist in order to adjust to the policies that were enacted to bring the Omospondia back in the galactic stage.

Orthodox Party

The Orthodox Party is the other major political party in the Perseid Federation. Founded in 688 XS, it is the oldest active party in the Omospondia, having lasted for nearly seven centuries. For a time it dominated Perseid politics during the Isolationist Era, but has seen its influence weaken in recent decades. It is positioned as the conservative party in domestic issues, supporting free market policies, social conservatism, a strong national defense, technological progress and traditional values. Orthodoxes currently hold a slight minority in both houses of the Ecclesia.

It was founded after a schism took place among the members of the now defunct Themelian Party. The Orthodox Party at the time was positioned to the left of the Themelians because they favored a weak federal government, greater value for traditional values and free enterprise. For a time they were a minor party until several members from other offshoots of the Themelian Party joined them in 695 XS. Since then, they quickly gained support from voters all over the Omospondia and became a major third party in the 8th century XS. By 725 XS, the Orthodoxes dominated many of the Convocatures in the Gasan, Avis and Kassaras Systems.

It was a supporter of business, high tariffs and other protectionist measures to preserve the Perseid economy from foreign intervention, and the colonization of the far western systems of the Dione Nebula. Because of successive Orthodox Archons, the economy boomed with commerce and trade, industry, agriculture and a growing consumer base. Policies were enacted to sustain growth for centuries to come.

In 782 XS, the Orthodoxes increasingly brought more center-right parties under its wing, and it positioned gradually to the right of the political spectrum as a result. Since then the Omospondia saw its national defense grow immensely due to the threat posed by the Norma powers in the direction of Zyphias. The rapid buildup of the Perseid Federation's military strength brought the Orthodoxes and Themelians — both of which supported the military buildup — under strong criticism, especially from supporters of the left. However the Orthodoxes has a more pacifist approach compared to the Themelians, which allowed them to survive what had been essentially the destruction of the conservative right during the Perseid Civil War.

The Orthodoxes were slowly regaining ground in the Ecclesia, especially during the Firasai immigration crisis. By the turn of the 11th century XS, the Orthodoxes successfully entered the Perseid Federation into an era of isolationism. While the Omospondia's external assets withered away — particularly the Sivulon Trade Network — the Orthodoxes brought a period of economic self-sufficiency while slowly allowing some social and technological progress in order to keep the Progressives happy. However, the Orthodoxes began to relinquish some of their seats to other parties, especially the Progressives; but they are expected to have an advantage in the 1368 XS elections.

Other Major Parties

While the Orthodox and the Progressive Party are the dominant parties in the Perseid government, both parties have seen their control of Perseid politics weaken slightly in recent years. To many political analysts, this was because of certain factors that played a part in the Perseid political landscape, notably the general dissatisfaction of voters with the two parties. Within the void that the Progressives and the Orthodoxes left vacant, third parties were struggling to fill the gap.

Neo-Themelian Party
The Neo-Themelian Party considers itself to be the successor of the old Themelian Party, even though its policies are slightly more right-wing than the Themelian Party itself. They advocate a strong military defense, fiscal and social conservatism, economic liberalism and the preservation of traditional values. Early Neo-Themelians saw that long-held traditions in the Omospondia were being eroded by the Progressives, and so have allied with the Orthodoxes to pose a conservative bloc in the Ecclesia.

Eleutherican Party
The Eleutherican Party would be considered the largest "third party" in the Perseid government. It was founded in 839 XS, during which time other leftist parties emerged in what would be named the "Rise of the Perseid Left." Its platform is based on the ideals of classical liberalism. Eleutherican members of the government are known to support a small federal government, a well-educated populace, free market policies, inter-species understanding and equality, and minimal state intervention in the private matters of citizens. Unlike the Progressives, the Eleuthericans have little or no concern with social justice.

Democratic Socialist Coalition
The Democratic Socialist Coalition (often abbreviated to DSC) is a left-leaning party founded in 846 XS. It has positioned itself to the left of the Progressive Party in its ideology and its convictions. The DSC believes that more state intervention should be allowed in order to regulate the market, distribute the wealth of the Omospondia fairly, and guarantee every Perseid citizen with universal access to basic needs such as healthcare, education and social security.

Dynamis
The Dynamis Party is a right-wing party founded in 1281 XS. They are known for supporting ultraconservative and reactionary policies, advocating for a much larger and stronger military, a very centralized government, and the expansion of the Perseid Federation with the goal of completely incorporating the entire Sivulon Reach under its banner and completely controlling the Sivulon Trade Network. Dynamists are known to be xenophobic and ultranationalist, and have garnered attention in the media for such by various acts that they claim to be what the Omospondia should be doing.

Syllogikos Party
The Syllogikos Party would be considered as a far-left party that advocated a neo-Communist political system. The conditions during their founding in 1314 XS — the Isolationist Era of Perseid history — were most conducive for such a party to be created. However, they were discredited by some right-wing politicians in the Ecclesia, particularly by an Orthodox Representative named Evangelos Hadjiyianakies. His argument that the Syllogikans were against democratic values and economic liberalism served to weaken the party, and it never regained its previous numbers for the next several decades.

The technophage (Scarabaeus metallovorus) is a large arthropod that is most well known for being able to ingest and digest metal. Technophages can live without a breathable atmosphere, and can travel vast interstellar distances. It is usually a solitary species, often residing in wilderness areas of planets, but from time to time a population explosion occurs. If that happens, they can migrate throughout the cosmos in vast swarms often numbering in the millions, causing extensive damage to infrastructure on certain inhabited planets in their path. They can be mainly found in a particular section of the Perseus Arm, estimated to be the area between absolute galactic bearings 60° and 66°.

Upon their discovery by human colonizers settling the Sivulon Reach, they appeared to be consuming some of their tools and machines; acquiring the metallic elements and compounds that were used in building them. Thinking that those creatures turned their body parts into the technology that they ate, they called them technophages. Later research into their anatomy proved it to be erroneous — its taxonomical designation was changed from Scarabaeus technovorus to the current Scarabaeus metallovorus in light of these discoveries — but the label stuck.

A typical adult male measures approximately 122 centimeters in length, while females are slightly shorter but larger. This makes it one of the largest arthropods discovered and catalogued. A technophage's exterior partly resembles that of a scarab, ergo its classification with the Scarabeidae family (despite the fact that they developed differently from beetles of that taxonomic group). Contrary to popular belief, technophages aren't insects — even though they do have similar anatomical features with other insects, most notably their exoskeletons and elytra. In fact, scientists have stated that they have more in common with crustaceans than insects. The average life span of a technophage in the wild is around 30 to 40 years.

While technophages are total omnivores, able to consume and digest almost anything, its diet consists primarily of smaller animals and many plant species. It could sustain itself for several years without sustenance, enabling it to travel to distant worlds without having to be concerned about finding food. Metals in particular are absorbed into the technophage's bloodstream and used as the building blocks for its exoskeleton. Refined metal tends to attract technophages, since they could consume it faster and digest it more easily than metal ores. Often the color of its carapace is taken from the metal ore that it ingests, allowing the creature to fabricate a convincing camouflage.

Technophages are normally sedentary in their natural habitat, but when agitated by external threats such as predators or hunters, they can become defensive. Its bite is one of the strongest known to zoologists, able to bend solid metal two inches thick.

Solitary as technophages are, they were observed to be together with other technophages in packs during mating season, often during the 6th to 8th months of the Xenian Standard Calendar. Packs are often led by an alpha. Mating grounds are often terrestrial areas where there is an abundant source of food, especially plant life. If the conditions are right, packs could easily grow into large swarms that could number in the millions. The swarms can then leave the planet in search of other worlds to settle in, usually ones with an abundant supply of food.

Subspecies

Because of their wide range across the cosmos, there are multiple subspecies of technophages that are endemic to certain areas of the Perseus Arm. Many of them have minuscule variations in their anatomical structure from the original species. However, there are also species with more obvious differences in their anatomy. The list below shows the most common subspecies of technophages, arranged in descending order in terms of population and range.

  • Chrysic technophage
The Chrysic technophage (Scarabaeus metallovorus chrysi) is a subspecies that can be found in the towards the Chrysos of the Perseus Arm. It is the most populous and most widespread subspecies of technophage, commonly found in the area of the Perseus Arm between absolute galactic bearings 61.68° and 65.03°.

  • Dionic technophage
The Dionic technophage (Scarabaeus metallovorus yiraius) is the predominant subspecies that could be observed in the Perseid Federation. Their range covers the Dione Nebula and the Leucarnatia subsector of the Sivulon Reach, though they can also be found in smaller numbers in the Nephidas subsector.

  • Avisan technophage
The Avisan technophage (Scarabaeus metallovorus avis) is a subspecies related to the Dionic technophage, primarily found in the Sagittaros regions of the Dione Nebula, Thalassa Apophones and in the Lamprini Nebula. Compared to other subspecies, its average size is slightly smaller — the average adult male measures 109 cm long.

Official ensign of the Kritarchy of Idruteia.

Idruteia, officially the Kritarchy of Idruteia (Idruteian: Κριταρχία Ιδρυτήα, Perse: Κριταρχία Ιδρυτεία), is a predominantly posthuman civilization located in the Norma Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy, in the direction of Normas. It has an estimated population of 105 billion inhabitants as of 1368 XS, and control of 28 systems — 5 of which are core systems. Its capital and de facto home world is Tharsis, the third planet in the Aktis System. For many years Idruteia and the Perseid Federation have had an uneasy diplomatic relationship, though they have been trading partners for a couple of recent decades.

Idruteia lies in an area of space known as the Thrasymachus Belt, located in the coreward regions of the Norma Arm. The Belt runs through the lucrative Diadromi Ouranos trade route, which branches off from the Sivulon Trade Network. Everything within 1 light year of a Idruteian system's home star is within the jurisdiction of the Idruteian government. Aktis, Thrascia, Archea, Gignes and Iodes are Idruteia's core systems.

A smaller group of colony ships — mostly filled with religious pilgrims fleeing religious persecution — continued on from the Perseus Arm, finding refuge among the star systems in the Norma Arm. They arrived in the Aktis System and settled the Terranesque planet they named Tharsis. Initial attempts at colonization proved to be a hindrance to them — within 20 years of settling half of their colonies had been deemed abandoned. But something was about to reverse their fortunes. Strange ancient relics were found near the Tetragonos River, and news of the artifacts spread among the colonial settlements. Similar relics and later ruins were found in nearby places, indicating that this planet was once where a thriving civilization once stood.

Using the newfound technological artifacts on their world — collectively called the Archaioi — the colonists not only managed to survive on the surface of Tharsis but thrived. Palladion, which was a nascent settlement built along the Tetragonos River next to the ancient relics, became a prosperous and influential city. Within the next few decades, the entire planet was colonized and unified under their guidance. Acquiring interstellar capability a few decades after that, the Aktis System was explored and colonized by this new people who called themselves Idruteians. They quickly expanded within the Thrasymachus Belt and became the dominant power in the region.

Contact with the Perseids was established sometime in 882 XS, when merchant vessels from the Omospondia were traveling the Diadromi Ouranos in search of other star-states to trade with. Idruteia was deemed by the Perseids as a prospective market where Perseid products can be sold. Initial requests were sent to the Idruteian government to open their markets, but the Dicasts decisively rejected their offer. After four years of constant inquiry from the Perseids, they eventually opened their markets to them, and a technological exchange took place. As money was flowing into Idruteia, they gave in return technological advances that were Archaioi-based in nature, such as direct-energy weapons, cutting-edge biotechnology and neural interface computing of a kind unseen in the Omospondia.

Commercial activity continued between Idruteia and the Perseid Federation for many decades, and it seemed the two states were heading down the road to friendlier relations and greater cooperation. However, a particular incident that took place in the mid-10th Century XS wrecked such optimism. Whistleblowers coming from Idruteia defected to the Perseid Federation, who were disillusioned by the increasing hedonist practices that the Dicasts were promoting in Idruteian society. Extreme forms of transhumanism, unrestricted biological experimentation and a form of pseudo-hive mind collectivism centered on the Archaioi were some of the things that they disclosed. But, the most appalling story that spread throughout the Perseid Federation was about an extremely invasive technological interface — what the Idruteians dubbed as Anima — that allowed the Idruteians to perform some of the most extreme in biomanipulation, such as body substitution, complete gender interchange and cerebral psychokinesis.

Because of pressure from the Theognostic clergy and laity — who saw that any more involvement with the Idruteians may result in a wave of degeneracy that may ripple across the Omospondia — the Perseid government slowly began to distance from Idruteia. Many Archons who claimed to stand on the side of morality, protested against the Idruteian government for what the Perseids perceived as "degrading and corrupt." The Idruteian government spoke out against the accusations, saying that they were baseless charges made so the Perseids can impose their culture on them. As the years went on and on, hostilities continued to grow between the two.

Yet, it wasn't just the perceived perversion of the Idruteians that strained relations between the two states, but also the desire for control over the lucrative Diadromi Ouranos. Both powers built up large navies to keep the other in check. Skirmishes were being fought over key systems along the passageway — several of which took place in highly contested territories — the most famous of which being the Aidalos System. To pose a united front against the Perseids, Idruteia entered into an entente with its xeno neighbors. This forced the Omospondia to retire from galactic affairs and enter isolation in order to avert a war. With their economic rivals out of the picture, the Idruteians increasingly found itself competing with its allies for control over the Diadromi Ouranos. Two massive wars were fought over the route, which weakened the Norma powers greatly, and the route itself faded into unimportance.

Upon the return of the Perseid Federation to the galactic arena, Idruteia was among the nations the Omospondia reached out to. Like their ancestors, the Idruteian government initially rejected their trade proposals, but then accepted economic cooperation with the Perseids. Tensions between the two remain high, just as it had been over three centuries ago — but that hasn't stopped economic cooperation.

Government

Idruteia is a confederation of worlds held together by a loose central government called the Kritarchy, which has smaller political divisions under its purview that exercise a great deal of autonomy. The Kritarchy is divided into two main divisions: a legislative body called the Synod, and an executive and judicial body called the Dicastery. The Synod is a council of Magistrates elected from the citizenry who promote the laws of the land, laws which may change over time (see below). The Dicastery is a council of Dicasts elected from and by the Magistrates, and wield executive and judicial powers. During times of crisis such as war, the Dicasts may elect among themselves a temporary head of state called a Krites. The Krites serves as the supreme commander of the Panstratos and has emergency powers.

Image
Official emblem of Idruteia.
The Idruteian system of government is in essence, a liquid democracy, as the political processes of government are in the hands of the people. In this system, twelve people may choose to delegate their vote to another person, often one coming from the group. This political group is called a Dodekamada — translated as "group of twelve" — and a member of the Dodekamada is called a Melos (pl. Meloi). The delegate, called the Ekprosopos, is selected from and by the Meloi to represent the Dodekamada, and is trusted by his fellow Meloi to make an informed decision in their place. In turn, the Ekprosopos may delegate those collected votes to another person in the same manner.

This system of delegating votes to their Ekprospoi continues until the votes are delegated to a Magistrate in the Synod, who may bring the input of the citizens to the government. This is how the Idruteian government deals with issues and responds accordingly with the best solution. A Melos can take back their vote from their Ekprosopos at any time, and may bypass the Ekprosopoi and vote on the policy themselves if there is a particular issue of great importance to them. Technology such as neural interfaces and cutting-edge cryptography can tally votes and the delegation of votes in order for the central and confederal governments to effectively come up with an appropriate solution that is in line with the voice of the Idruteian citizenry.

The legal system of Idruteia may perhaps be one of the most unique. There are no statutory laws in place, nor is there any authority dictating what the law is. All laws are discovered by the judges based on the best possible solution to a certain dispute. The law is compensatory rather than punitive, and as a result, there is no imprisonment in Idruteia, and fines are considered to be rare. Payment of compensation is not given to any court or to the government, but directly to the offended party.

Culture and Society

Citizens of Idruteia have had a rich and diverse cultural heritage shaped by their environs and by changes that took place in Idruteian society. Idruteian culture exhibits aspects that could be found in other predominantly human star-states such as the Perseid Federation.

Idruteian citizens have a sense of collectivism that permeates all levels of society. Many believe that each member is to be cared for in order that Idruteian civilization may continue to thrive. Enlightenment is what many Idruteians strive to achieve, and a love for wisdom is widely promoted by society. At an early age, Idruteian children are taught to seek enlightenment in whichever way may suit them — provided that their actions may bring pleasure and not pain. Altruism is greatly encouraged by the community, and sharing is a common sight. In fact, sociologists have repeatedly commented that the Idruteians are some of the most communal civilizations in the galaxy.

Society is divided into a caste system of sorts, each of which is integral to the perpetuity of the community. Each caste is referred to as thekon by the Idruteians. No single thekon is considered to be more superior over the others, for they believe that even in the absence of one thekon, Idruteian society would case to exist. Members of more than one thekon are considered by society as the Favored.

  • Arbiters — This thekon is composed of leaders and statesmen. Sophonts of this class are renowned to be highly tactful and wise in their decisions — qualities that are needed to effectively govern the Idruteian people.
  • Artificers — It is composed of inventors and scientists. They are responsible for the pursuit of science and the advancement of technology.
  • Shapers — This is comprised of the clergy, educators and scholars. This caste is a highly respected and valued portion of Idruteian society, since it holds the future of the next generation in its hands. Their task is to enlighten their fellow brethren and to encourage that they seek for wisdom and enlightenment. They are expected to live an exemplary life, and is compelled to pay double the compensation required of a person of another caste should he/she be convicted of a crime.
  • Interpreters — This caste is composed of historians and archivists. This thekon is accountable for the preservation of all records of Idruteian civilization and their memory.
  • Watchers — They are composed of the military and the police. Their responsibility is to protect and defend Idruteia from threats that may loom from within and from without. It is expected that Watchers live an exemplary life.
  • Merchants — They are composed of tradesmen, businessmen, and the entrepreneurs. The sophonts that serve in this caste are primarily proficient in commercial activity.
  • Charmers — This caste consists of entertainers, prostitutes and others in occupations offering service. Their job is to provide pleasure for their fellow Idruteians when they need it.
  • Operators — The sophonts that belong to this caste work as laborers and engineers. They are responsible for building and maintaining infrastructure throughout Idruteia's domains and assisting the Artificers in.
  • Reapers — They are the farmers and agriculturists. It is an important caste because it is responsible for Idruteia's food supply. Because of technological advances in growing and harvesting crops as well as raising animals for food, the Reapers are also one of the smallest castes in Idruteian society.
