Unusual/offbeat ways of getting around in your nation?

Postby Derngea » Sun May 24, 2015 4:32 am

In Derngea's capital city, we have a rather unusual "urban transit" system.

One of the main quirks is in the vehicles themselves:
Image
DUT 1000 Series

At first sight, it looks like a monorail train, but on closer inspection, you'll notice that it's actually a specially designed Vanhool bus (with actual tyres) running on guided tracks (much like the Métro in Paris). It's very unusual, yes, but it works. And it works like clockwork.

The entire DUT system runs across the capital, left, right and centre. And because the system is used THAT frequently, the average wait time between trains is just under 2 minutes, rivalling the punctuality of the Moscow Metro. All this, despite the fact that Derngea's capital is nowhere near as populous.

Some DUT trains also run special liveries.

DUT's PaRappa The Rapper livery.

Now this brings me to my point: Does your nation have any quirky public transport systems?

The New Mushroom Kingdom inherited and engineered a public transport system that uses Mario-style Warp Pipes. It is used by 90% of Toads, and 75% of humans as their main public transportation methods. Due to this, busses never took off, and trains are mostly used for freight.

People walk or ride bikes around our nation. Cars are banned by those who aren't part of the government. We cant trust cars as people may leave their beautiful nation.

Aircraft that are "heavier than air" are not allowed in the Glorious Republic of Uruguay, so all air travel uses airships/zeppelins.

Refrigerportation: By manipulating the finer systems within a refrigerator, one is capable of teleportation from one refrigerator to another. However, doing this too often will invoke the unwanted attention of the Refrigerated God.

Self-Propelled Breeding Camps: When a mass grave gains a complex enough ecosystem, it will rise as a mollusk-like organism to wander aimlessly. Through various unspeakable means, the creature is able to be slaved to a complex psionic signal and controlled. The most common use for these abominations is the self-propelled breeding camp, our most reliable source of food and ammunition. If you are feeling desperate, then you can carve a bolthole into the necrotized flesh and pray.

Tour Bus: Tour buses roam the countryside, looking for victims to take on tours. These tours are invariably lethal, dragging their victims through hellish dimensions and impossible biological constructs. As long as you know where the emergency exits are, you might be able to avoid the worst.

Death: Not so much a viable means of getting from point A to point AAAAAAAA (not that this stops some people), but rather a means of escape. This usually fails as there are many entities lurking in underworlds and overworlds capable of using your soul for nefarious goals.

Not all tour buses are like this, though.

Image

One may rent a tour bus like this, although if you wish to travel around the city luxuriously, a limo is preferred, or a public party bus is preferred.

Image

As a cheaper alternative, one may rent a limo. However, not all limos are luxury limos, and limos are usually limited in distance compared to tour buses.

Jump drive: The Jump drive is our primary form of FTL travel and works by creating a stable wormhole that the vessel can use to traverse interstellar distances in a extremely short time.

Reactionless thrusters: This drive directly converts electrical energy into kinetic energy without the use of a reaction mass and is used as a means of propelling air and space vessels.

We've got a metro rail system, private aircraft, ground vehicles, experimental teleportation, and magic. We also have buses and cars that are salvaged and upgraded from the ruins of human cities.

Tolmakia uses airships for limited transportation; it plans to use the airship more in the near future. There are many Tolmakian companies that specialize in airship technology (like Good Blimp Incorporated, and the Tolmakian Airship Enterprises). Along with this, there is a planned monorail system.

In cities, there are passageways that literally go through buildings. People who want to avoid crowded streets may simply walk through the buildings instead, through a network of skyways and moving walkways.

The citizens of Perditan travel primarily through a system of local and regional walking paths. In cities and towns, walking paths can have several lanes wide and include spaces for mechanical transportation devices.

Motorized personal craft, such as automobiles, are generally not used in Perditan, as they are considered impractical and impossible to use. Many coastal cities have enacted bans on them.

Long-distance walking paths tend to have resting stations located every 8-10 kilometres. Other options for long-distance travel include an extensive system of magnetic levitation trains that connect towns and cities. In fact, rail stations are often considered the hub or center of private commercial and cultural activity in towns and cities.

Transportation of materials either occurs using trains or aircraft. Airports are usually located near the industrial centres of cities for this reason.

Hoverboards and -bikes which use a magnetic force field to move slightly above ground fluently are fairly common in Singulus. They are ideal from even to uneven ground with the exceptions of bodies of water, swamps, mountains, steep hills and dips and dense forests. They use nuclear fission power cells to operate and are produced mainly by Serge Motorsport. They are particularly popular among the Runners' Guild postal service, tricksters, racers and stuntmen and -women.

Since Olwe is primarily a magic-using nation, our primary methods of getting around are flying broomsticks, unicorn-riding and teleportation... none of which are considered usual by most non-Olweans. Cars, though not unheard of, are rare, and public transportation -- though readily available, especially in larger cities -- isn't quite as necessary as it would be in an all-Muggle nation, and therefore tends to be less overcrowded (and therefore cleaner and better-smelling).

The type of transport that stands out most is the riderbird (there's one on our flag). They are massive birds that can fly and carry loads due to the dense atmosphere of the Vrree worlds. An average fully-grown riderbird can carry the weight of two adult Vrree, or a single rider and some cargo. They come in a variety of colours, but the white variant is most common, since they breed better and are easier to train. Because of their limited payload, riderbirds are most often used as private transport, mail/package delivery, or as a long-distance taxi service.

most travel within gwrachbyd's subterrainian cities is done via gravrail (magnetically accelerated and levetated trains) or by foot. some of the more spacious areas and surface argricultural regions use pushbikes or electric motorbikes/scooters.

travel between cities is achieved via high speed gravrail, electric car (powered using RTG cells) or a variaty of aircraft including hybrid airships, or nuclear powered aircraft (such as nuclear jets and electric prop planes, don't worry the engines are well shielded to prevent radioactive contamination and only the heat of nuclear decay is used to power the thrust of the jets)

The tree rails are still a popular form of transportation. This is essentially a narrow, raised path (wide enough to fit a small car) through towns traditionally fixed to tree but now more often connected to buildings upon which one can travel. They date back to pre-Roman times. Depending on the rail system, one can walk, ride a bike, be pulled by a small animal (goat, large dog, pony, tiger) in a carriage or sometimes even ride a motorcycle or dirt-bike over the rails.

The other type of tree rail consists of a long, thin wire that runs along the side of the road. Invented around 800 BC, this rail was used so animals could carry goods between villages without human direction. The animals were hooked up to the wire which was adjusted so they couldn’t sit down until they got to the nearest town. This is still a popular form of transportation but can only be found in a few places as sidewalks must be used so the animals do not interfere with automobile traffic.

Well, some can teleport.

Not that molecular break down kind. The tearing a small hole into space-time continuum and walking through that to the destination a few miles away kind of teleportation.
