Our slaves are used to do heavy labor, such as mining and oil roughnecking. They have no rights at all, but in most cases, aren't treated very badly for labor slaves. Of course, "badly" is in the eye of the beholder, so we will clarify: They aren't beaten or killed for no reason, aren't tortured, and don't get raped. On the other hand, the work is hard and goes on 24/7. They have been genetically altered so that they don't need sleep and so their metabolism can run on far less food and water than the original design spec called for. Some people think it's cruel to work the slaves constantly, but with the genetic upgrades, they are quite capable of performing their duties.

That said, humans outside of our jurisdiction are often appalled at the fact that we consider our slaves to be livestock and treat them accordingly. We modify their genetic codes to be more useful to us, have blocked reproduction outside of our cloning centers in order to ensure that all stock runs the Approved DNA Codec, buy and sell individuals, recycle them when they can no longer work, etc.

The protests of non-owned humans just makes us laugh - after all, we're not treating humans any differently than they treat horses and oxen, and more importantly, how they usually treat machines! In fact, many of our practices are based on their own - after all, it's humans who first subjugated other beings (and each other!) to do work. We just improved those techniques and then applied them to all of the humans without any consideration to race. We think the foreigners that complain about how we treat humans are just sore that they're on the other end of the stick in this empire.

Slavery in the Domion has been outlawed for 1500 years. We do have indentured servants. By law this cannot last longer than two tenures of 4 years totalling 8. When it is voluntary it is considered patronage.

When one is forced to do so out of debt it is peonage. Peonage may not last beyond 8 years regardless of the ability of the indentured servant to make restitution. Prisoners of war, and felons are the lowest indentured class. They must fulfill the length of their entire sentencebefore before being freed even if it is over 8 years.

Indentured Servants are treated with all dignity afforded a human being regarding their station. This varies with the Ruling Houses. Some Houses have more dignity than others.

Kratichor is considered the worst House. Indentured Servants may not own more than 5 estates, own controlling stock in any business with more than 600 employees, nor sit on the board of any fortune 500 company.

That's right, big pipes and small children, we consider slaves property. A slave owner may kill a slave but only when there is no other option. However His Imperial Majesty Emperor Ronald I sometimes kills slaves for the slightest mistake when he is in a bad mood.

At the moment slavery is illegal in Mechanocratic Russia. However, our industry relies heavily on the Gulag system, which gets its labour from criminals. The problem is just that: the police force is so effective that the nation has a chronic shortage of criminals, because the chances of being caught as one is almost absolute - this, as it turns out, is an excellent deterrent.

We recently turned to our occupied zones to keep the Gulags running and the Mechanocracy's economy shipshape, deporting entire populations of towns, cities and even regions to fuel our labour force. Even then, we're going to run out of labour at some point. We have considered breeding new labourers on-site, but it will be many years before we perfect the technology. As a short term solution, the State has begun to partake in the international slave trade. Several of our easternmost Gulags already purchase slaves from raider clans both native and abroad as well as governments that prop up the industry, but we are preparing to apply this to Gulags Mechanocracy-wide.
