Your nation's accent

Postby Davisholm » Sun Oct 19, 2014 2:53 pm

What accent do your nation's people have when they speak English?

Davisholm is an English-speaking nation, though an accent of its own that sounds closest to Irish and Scottish English. Notable features include:
  • The letter "r" is always pronounced and sometimes trilled.
  • The vowel sound in "vane" and "vain" is a flat "eh" sound, not a diphthong.
  • "Pam" and "palm" are pronounced the same.
  • "Good" is pronounced the same as "goad".
  • "Feud" is pronounced like "food" in American/English accents.
  • "Putt" is pronounced the same as "put".
  • Some words keep the "German ch" sound that was dropped from other English dialects. Thus "caught" is pronounced "caukht".

Enataians have accents that have been described as somewhere between thick Scandinavian and thick Coast Salish, although linguistically, English is taught in schools from an early age. Urban communities tend to have accents more along the lines of Norway or especially Iceland, but in rural Enatai where native Enataian is a language which still sees heavy use, the Scandinavian accent is diminished and the Coast Salish accent is strongly heard. The current king speaks with a thick Salish accent, having grown up in the mountains.

Ammerinian Accents in the Core Areas are mainly listed as somewhere between Northeast American and Western English. Down in the south, accents are mainly described as Northern Irish sounding and almost Scandinavian. Of course Imperial English is the dominant language. Up in the Northern Territories, accents are usually a mix of French and Scottish.

Here are some examples:

Alright - All-roy-te

Imperial Military - Im-pur-yal-Mil-it-ury

Evil communists - Ee-vul-comm-you-nosts

Let's do this - Lets-deu-theis

Malantinos are a very disperse nation.
Towards the west and center of our island our mostly holland/switzerland accents.
When the Hollands conolized Malantai, they succeeded in seizing control of the west coast and the mountains in the center of the isles.
However, along the south north and east coasts, most Malantinos are of Samoain Ancestery.

An ordinary Zhouranese person's accent when speaking English is similar to that of a Chinese or Korean.

Examples:

People's Army - P-e-pals ah-me

President Obama - Pre-sint O-bam-a

Evil imperialists - E-virl im-pur-yul-ists

For those who have studied English, they have a much more sophisticated accent, like this for example.

Lingang is an English speaking nation. But our accent sounds different depending on the location. In the Northern States, the accents sound like a mix of British and South African (especially British in New Victoria City). In the South it sounds very odd, like English (the country) but with an American twinge to it. Out west the accent is very drawn out and rural sounding, like a Southern US accent, but still with an Australian twist to it.

Words are usually pronounced harshly at the beginning.

For example, hello is "HE-llo", with the hyphen indicating the relaxation.

The Imperial Dominion has two official languages (the Common Tongue and High Alor) which alter their accents. The citizens of the Imperial Dominion don't have knowledge of the English language but the common Alor would speak it with something nearly indistinguishable from a Londoner accent. The aristocracy are a different story though. While everybody in the Imperial Dominion speaks the Common Tongue only the nobility speak High Alor with almost all of them being fluent in both. Since the nobles are raised to be bilingual and the two languages are vastly different in origin, this leads to a distinct, "aristocratic" accent. So, they have a slight French undertone to their accent in addition to the more dominant Londoner accent.

Very "Arabic" accent, and not much English is spoken as it is actually a puppet state controlled by Federation of Astana Pact States after its defeat in wars on the Armenian and Afghan borders with the Fed which caused it to lose the Middle East and now only has Algeria, Libya, Tunisia and Egypt.

When speaking English, Brellachi have an almost melodic accent, which sounds like a cross between certain Arabian and Slavic accents. The words they use when speaking English tend to be extremely literal and descriptive, much like their own native language (as seen in the English names of various government bodies in Brellach; 'Her Court', or 'Her Lawbringers', as examples), though rarely are they concise.
