Television licences and public broadcasting in your nation

Postby New Reading » Tue Sep 23, 2014 8:37 pm

Does your nation have a comprehensive public broadcasting service?

Does your nation levy a television licence to fund public broadcasters?
New Reading is a socialist state with a constitutional monarchy and inherited privilege.

Yes and Yes. Our public broadcasting, covered by the license fee, is ATV, or Ape Television.

The Makaarian Broadcasting Company (MBC) is state-run and state-funded. It was once funded through the purchase of television licenses; however, these have been defunct since 1980. The MBC is now funded through income taxation.

Yes, ours is the Namayapata News Network (NNN), which despite it's name actually broadcasts all sorts of programs over TV and radio. It's mostly just referred to as NNN or the Triple N.

TV licencing costs 40 Nimas per year, and goes towards paying for the NNN to run. When you have a TV licence, you get a smart card which you must insert into your TV or set top box to be able to access NNN channels. You can access other broadcasters' channels no matter what.

Yes, and no in the narrowest sense.

Poliphilos is Frenequesta's public broadcasting service, and has television, radio, and internet outlets. It is funded through a general non-discretionary fund, which the TV license fees do contribute to but are not specifically for the funding of public broadcasting. TV licenses are just considered another source of revenue and an way to organize and regulate frequencies and bandwidths.

Our main broadcasting company is NATV (National Anollasian Television), which is state-owned. It is illegal to set up a broadcasting company without a license.

Most of the television channels in Alsheb are owned by the state-owned Alsheb National Television Association (ANTVA), with the main channel logically being ANTV , or Alsheb National Television. Aside from ANTV, the Association also owns several lifestyle, entertainment, education and other channels.

There are some private television channels, but they are of course supervised. Owning a television station is also made difficult by the fact that it's forbidden to create a commercal television company or corporation, so it's generally not profitable to own a private channel.

All television stations in Saintland are owned by the King's Government or the Church of Saintland and all television is available free of charge to anybody who has a television set and all television programming is delivered over the airwaves and received by antennas. There is a King's Government department that monitors the airwaves for illegal broadcasts.

Not as such. We add a flat rate of 200 Bojangles ($68) to every TV when brought. It funds the national TV station, ASTV. (More specifically, the cult classic, Doctor Where)

We have a public broadcasting service called TVC. It is akin to the BBC.

It is funded by a $5.50 a month tax.

Avaerilon does not have a public broadcast service, though provisions have been made for emergency broadcasts should they be needed. In the 1930s, the Social Democrats proposed a public broadcaster be set-up, primarily for radio broadcast, but also for television. They also suggested only the public broadcaster be allowed on television. The idea was ridiculed, largely because of fears of restricting free speech. Citizens do not have any kind of license fee to pay; most television channels generate profit from media sales and advertising.

Does your nation have a comprehensive public broadcasting service?
Yes, though the majority of its revenue comes from advertising. The government funded proportion is earmarked for the creation of local content.

Does your nation levy a television licence to fund public broadcasters?
No.

The Imperial government runs the Rio Cana Imperial TV (RCI-TV). There Motto "The Voice of the Empire". Private tv and radio stations are allowed. But getting a license requires filling out much paperwork and paying substantial licensing fees. It takes months except for royals or businesses that support the Monarchy. No fees are charged to the public.

New Reading Terrestrial (NRT) is a state-owned public broadcasting system that is funded exclusively. Colloquially known as 'the T,' the network broadcasts programs over AM and FM radio, cable television, terrestrial television and via online streaming.

The NRT is funded through a television licencing fee of £132/year for colour television and £78/year for black and white television. Additional funds are supplied as grants by the Culture and Media Office.

All broadcasting, like nearly everything else, in US-TOP is private and supports itself by selling commercial time. We have several stations that provide news, documentaries, cultural and arts programs, interviews with the owner of Schweddy Family Wieners, etc. for those who like that kind of things.

Does your nation have a comprehensive public broadcasting service?

No. All television stations are usually owned by private individuals, and make a profit by having fundraisers every year.

Does your nation levy a television licence to fund public broadcasters?

No. The state's one public broadcasting station is funded from the Interior Ministry's coffers.
