How difficult would it be to design an automatic, recoil operated, revolver rifle/pistol?
I once tossed around an idea for a short recoil halfautomatic revolver pistol. Nothing came of it, really.

unless of course you mean in the style of revolver cannon where the revolver bit is feed from a belt/magazine but again the question would be why? for the love of god why?

Generally speaking, automatics are superior for pretty much everything over revolvers after the 1910s.
Probably most things, yes, but notable advantages revolvers have over semi-automatics is that they can more easily accept larger cartridges, and can more often accept multiple cartridge types (with at least one model being able to accept ~25 different types) without modification.
These advantages probably don't outweigh the advantages offered by semi-automatic handguns for general use, but they're probably still pretty handy for niche roles.

I know what you're thinking: "Did he fire six shots or fifty-three?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?

This made me laugh far more than it should have.
Also, please note the use of "Generally" and "Most things"
Revolvers have their place, and I have no real issue with them for use outside of a police and military role in a modern setting.
Thought the M1895 Nagant is still the longest serving handgun in the world.

Thats enough internet for today.
The amazing picture above shows President Kennedy with an early-model, futuristic M16 in 1963. The irony is that in a few months evil men would assassinate him using multiple rifle fire in a "L"-shaped ambush in Dealey plaza in Dallas, Texas because he wasn't pro-war enough.
