A layered system of cold weather gear is great.
Fur around openings like cuffs and the collar is good because fur catches snow and ice that would normally blow into those areas, but for the lining and filling of the gear I'm sure what to use, given how many options there are. Something like wool would be good but its heavy and takes forever to dry, fleece is extremely warm but loses that when it gets wet, etc. Fish fur pile or some other sort of synthetic quick dry pile would probably be my best option I don't know which to go with :/
With cold weather clothing your goal is to prevent sweating, as that will kill as an end result of the sweat and cold freezing the soldier from the outside in.
Its better to be slightly chilled when you sit around, as you will warm up when you move around.
Another thing is policy and training to make your clothing as effective as possible, like changing out socks, etc.
I can speak personally on changing out socks.
