So... If you were hit with a White Phosphorous round, would it ignite the vest?

Last time I checked, they didn't make WP rifle or pistol rounds, only as GL and mortar/artillery rounds.

And if you were hit by either of those in any vest, you'd be done fucked.

I meant like a 14 mm explosive low velocity.

No.

White Phosphorus particles burn very hot but they don't contain all that much energy. Even flammable metals are much more difficult to ignite in bulk then it would appear at first blush because they conduct heat very efficiently and have a low ratio of surface area to volume. They are powdered for incendiary purposes precisely because it prevents the heat from being conducted away and maximizes the surface area ratio. Ignition requires not just sufficient temperature but a whole lot of energy.

It won't ignite aluminum either. For the same reason.

Edit: This also makes it much less likely that a fire will become self sustaining, especially once the external source of heat is removed. Conductive materials are quite different from insulators in this regard. It is not a coincidence that the worst metal fires occur when the metal is in proximity to some other fuel source like fuel.

Additionally: if a 14mm round hits you square in the front of your body armor, combustion is the least of your concerns.

Your whole idea for high schoolers isn't feasible or possible.

For one, your whole nation' scientific future is at stake. For another, most of your workforce is gone. And teens aren't too good of an idea as tank operators.

uhm we have lot of cute teens. but if you say so these cute teens will attending at army as trainee and will be dispatched at suitable age.

recruiting high school pupils in time of war is not unheard of IRL. mentally and cognitively 16 year olds are not really that different from 18 year olds.

Personally I would not suggest all female armor/artillery units. this is because of the difference average weight, height and upper body strength of males and females. although tank and artillery troops do not really walk great distances with large amounts of equipment, they do have very intensive maintenance on their AFVs. this includes the lifting and fitting of pieces of gear weighing sometimes 30-60 kilograms. over long periods tis will cause a host of medical issues even for males(i am an IRL living example), but certainly for females because this means lifting on a daily basis around 50-100 % of your own body weight. more over, some of these things like repairing tracks, are done -during- combat and require very strong upper bodies to perform quickly.

I am not saying that all female tank units cant work(they can), i am saying that you will have more injuries, longer maintenance hours, and less effective units. Possibly if one insists on female tankers, the tank gunner position is the most suitable.

all of this does not mean that specific women can not perform these jobs as well as men, but you are talking about a large scale program which means we are talking about the average female not the exceptionally strong female.

Didn't the Old beetle have there magnesium alloy engine blocks catch fire every now and then. i think i remember my old engineering science lecturer describing how the a faulty battery in one of the old beetles would set off the engine block and leave a crater in the road.

It doesn't seem to be an insurmountable problem though given that magnesium engine blocks are still manufactured.

I'm not sure why the notion that magnesium doesn't violently combust when exposed to the slightest heat differential is unusual. Aluminum and titanium have both long been used in applications where subjected to high heat or enemy fire, despite also being combustible under the right circumstances. Titanium especially, given that it's also commonly used in aircraft engines where it is heated for hours, yet manages to not combust (although in those instances, it is usually actively cooled).

And URA, it's not comical. Patton's 3rd, for example, was an Armored Army, if I'm not mistaken.

Third Army was just a regular army. Under Patton, it became most famous for its armored offensives, but it was hardly the only army to be launching such attacks. The other armies had armored units as well, and these were detached and shifted around between corps/armies/army groups as needed.

The 101st is Airborne.

Which is composed of regular soldiers, the only difference being that they have more experience with air assault. There is no class distinction between them and regular non-airborne infantrymen, especially given that the Army has been standardizing organization so the 101st has the same pattern as a regular light infantry unit. The 101st doesn't even do jump training anymore (that's the 82nd).

afaik they're Royal Marines Commandos - or at least, the Marines have flown into battle on the sides of Apaches.

They use them to fly downed pilots around.

The sponsons have a design load sufficient to hold a grown man + equipment or two, with weight to spare, and handholds.

Just to make sure I am not responsible for anything- I would just not have girls in tanks(I do like GuP though). BTW as an aspect of military realism if you do have boys and girls everywhere and you intend to prevent fraternization, prepare your self for double the showers, barracks and latrines. And than there will still be fraternization because :humans:

the technological principle(confusing missiles with IR lights) is battle proven and works well assuming you know what the target missile is looking for and can duplicate it.
