Slat armour actually intends to destroy the fusing mechanism so it [the RPG] just bounces harmlessly off. It usually does this.

ERA just throws a piece of metal at whatever is penetrating, or more advanced ERAs might throw LSCs at you.

I've seen the T40 on both the ERC and AMX-10RC chassis, and also a mock-up upgrade for the VBCI.

What are the kinds of things you will have to fight? The PT-76 or Type 63 may be something like you're looking for.

It's all basic Sociology, really. As X becomes a more common opinion, people that agree with it are more vocal, people that are "meh" decide they must be right, and people who disagree stay quiet, until X becomes the "norm." Then, at some point someone persuasively argues that X is wrong and Y is right, and the process starts anew.

I've been here much shorter than Samoz, but I'm beginning to see a pattern in the constant swings between "ETC is stupid, use a bigger caliber" and "bigger calibers are stupid, use ETC."

It's a matter of having "knowledgeable supporters" who can come out and buck existing public opinion in a convincing way. When they leave, and newer experts arrive with different opinion, most people are pliable enough and also change their opinions. 140 mm ETC used to be acceptable among "knowledgeable" circles, just look at Macabees and Sumer. But nowadays the logic espoused by the current round of "experts" is that such guns are either extreme overkill, or would not in fact provide the expected penetration and are thus not worth the weight and cost (which is usually glossed over anyway).

My argument is usually why not go for railguns if you're opting for the 1 MJ ETC package.

ETC liquid propellant would be excellent for artillery however.

No.

That doesn't mean it wouldn't add some psycholoigical benefits.

Actually the idea of ETC is to make an impossibly powerful gun that the enemy might as well not try armoring against and yet everyone still claims they do.

Except that you'll end up with a huge turret anyway since ETC requires quite a bit of hardware. And many of them also up-gun to 140 mm so they get a slower rate of fire and a small ammo supply anyway.

I do not believe anyone. From my perspective the whole thing is basically a wanked out arms race where each side stretches realism further and further by stuffing magic under the rug until it swells like a big nasty zit.

As in, who among the experts here, many of whom do not operate such weapons, do you believe. I've seen some rather differing opinions regarding whether or not penetration is possible given the alleged armor characteristics.

Well I am no expert. But from my perspective the whole idea of tanks with enough armor to warrant 14cm ETC and lugging around 14cm ETC guns falls apart well before anyone fires a shot. We are talking size, weight, cost and mobility issues to begin with.
