Current 125 mm ammunition isn't in danger of this; weights are on par with US 120 mm ammunition.

for those who missed it on the last page, it's a light tank/MGS variant of the MA11 with a 120mm gun

And an alternate oscillating turret option, but I decided not to go with that.

Are you going for a cleft/semi-cleft turret with this?
Looks nifty.

I'm not so sure they are, I'm looking around and concrete numbers aren't proving easy to come by, but from what I can gather 120mm shells are around 24kg, and 125mm shells, fully-assembled, are pushing 30kg.

Considered it! Ended up going with the flap layout I have on my HT9A8 to secure a modicum of gun depression with an otherwise conventional turret architecture, if not a somewhat low profile one.

Design is more or less lifted with a few changes from what the Leclerc was originally intended to look like. :P

3VBM19/3BM42M has a projectile weight of 6.95 kg, with the 9.4 kg propellant charge, that's a total weight of 16.35 kg, a good deal less than the 22.3 kg of M829A3, or even the 18.6 kg of the original M829. HEAT rounds do get a bit heavier, at 19 kg for the projectile plus 9.4 kg for the propellant, for a total of 28.4 kg, but US M830 full cartridges are 24.2 kg. Indeed, there is a difference, but one imagines that if single-piece 125 mm ammunition were being designed for manual use, this would be taken into account. Amusingly, M58 had 48.8 kg shot and 40.5 kg HE, but of course required two loaders.

Articles I found on commercial sale of 125mm shells seemed to offer up 24kg projectile, which I now realise is probably a misuse in place of "cartridge".

ATK did not offer any combat shells of 120mm calibre less than 20(.9)kg, and only one training shell, a novel practice APFSDS shell known as M865.

I just grabbed my numbers from Fofanov for the 125 mm ammunition.

Several earlier-model 120 mm cartridges were under 20 kg, including the original M829 as mentioned (now long out of production), and XM827.

Are you referencing M829 as opposed to M829A1? ATK offered M829A1-spec ammunition with a 20.9kg cartridge weight.

Yes. The original M829, not M829A1 or any later variant.

Here's what I found.

http://btvt.narod.ru/4/kuma125.htm

ZBK16, introduced 1980, is an HEAP round with a total weight of 29 kg.

ZOF26 is an HE-F round which weighs a 33 kilograms.

Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

Is there any point in me using the PT-76 still? I heard it had good performance in snow, and because my nation snows most of the year I thought maybe it could still be useful due to that.

Regular tanks work fine in the snow. If anything they work better.

During WWII the Soviets would use the T-34 like a snowplow during attacks in the snow, with infantry following in the ruts left by its wide tracks.

It's not a stryker. They just gave it the same name.

It's more like an IFV anyway.

I sat inside a PT-76 about three weeks ago on my visit to Tempe. The size of the gun and shell was much larger than I anticipated, but given that low velocity and short barrel they're only marginally better than the BMP-1's Grom.

Which begs the question, why bother with the PT-76 when you can use a BMP that's just as effective in the same role?

Consider that the firepower, armour, and mobility are about the same - except a BMP can carry more troops.

I'm curious as to why everything on that list is British but the BTR. Wouldn't that needlessly complicate logistics?

Because I like the BTR. I don't see how it would really complicate them that much.

No, there's these things called production licences, and all of those vehicles are custom-developed without parts commonality anyway.
