Since it's significantly easier to modify existing guns for lower-velocity and weightier penetrators (I assume) to defeat ERA - would going the other way have any effect? If we could push significantly closer to 2km/s, might it be possible to "defeat" the ERA by penetrating deeply enough before it detonates to resist much of its effect?

Very high speed (over 2,000m/s) is supposed to reduce the effectiveness of ERA. But there aren't many details available.

I assume there's a long list of reasons why that may be, mostly culminating in dollar signs.

How can I calculate the maximum speed of a tracked AFV?

For the wank side.. You may try dividing power available to your tank's drive sprocket with possible rolling resistance that would be encountered by the tank.

For example.. We have engine with 1500 Hp of power.. Then how much power available for the sprocket ? From Technology of tanks we know that from that power only 70 to 61% will be available to actually run the tank.

Take that 61% and then multiply 1500 with it :

P=1500*0.61
P=915 hp or 682.31 Kilowatt (682315 watt) of power

Now into rolling resistance, this is difficult because it depends on many stuff, like kind of tracks used and its interaction with other components (roadwheels, etc) I tried to estimate it myself from 14 real world tank (Unfrotunately with assumption that there would be 70% of power available) and found that on the road, tank's rolling resistance is 22205.2 Newton.

On the mud/off road from what i read in technology of tanks. To simplify matter that on the road rolling resistance must be multiplied with some factor, like say 4 or more.

So... For the road speed..Taking that 22205.2 Newton as rolling resistance we got

V=682315/22205.2
V=30 m/s Or in Km/h is 110.6 Km/h

Now for off road, we assume muddy road so we multiply that rolling resistance with something like 4. Thus making our tracked vehicle's speed in that "muddy road" 7.68 m/s or 27.7 Km/h.

Uhh you mean Aerodynamic? I thought Hydrodynamic is for things in water.

M829A3 is just under 900mm long and gets a little over 1,500m/s from a 120mm gun.

Don't see why you couldn't do similar from a 125mm cannon.
