Introduction
The Castillian National Socialist State, also known by its native name Castille de Italia, is a large, highly technological nation within the region of Greater Dienstad. It is located on the Viridian Isle, a large island continent in the northeastern hemisphere of Greater Dienstad, sharing a border with the former United Coalition of Castleclose, which it is in the process of annexing as of 2015. Its capital city is Antietam, along the southeastern coastline, and its largest city is Grantham. It is ruled by the Chancellor of the State, who is currently J. Oswald Vaughn, chairman of the Castillian National Socialist Party, which is also the ruling party.
Castille de Italia's early history is quite unknown. It is known that a massive empire ruled across the majority of the Viridian Isle, based on archaeological dig sites, and the main epicenter of the empire which is called the Viridian Empire or the Viridian civilization, was located to the north near where the Great Border Wall is situated today. During the medieval era, Castille de Italia was no more than squabbling tribes, probably due to the collapse of the Viridian civilization.
Today, Castille de Italia is a shining example of humanity's greatest works, with massive cities and highly technological, eco-friendly structures across the country. The Castillian State has taken initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint, and to promote clean and healthy living. The State is ranked with the 10th fastest growing economy in Greater Dienstad, according to a World Assembly census. The State is also a beautiful tourist location, with a 72.5 Net Tourists per Hour according to the World Assembly.
History
As stated above, not much is known about the early Castillian Race. Historians have called the once massive civilization that spanned from the southern coasts of Castille de Italia to the Closian Highlands in the north the Viridian Empire, since it was situated on the Viridian Isle. Historians have also designated what was believed to be the seat of government of the Viridian Empire as Viridia, which is large complex of marble ruins approximately 125 kilometres from the Great Border Wall. Viridia was built with Ionic and Corinthian architecture, similar to the Greeks and Romans. It is believed that the Viridian Empire was highly advanced, possibly having the ability to create entire cities within a week or so.
The Viridians were constantly at war with barbaric tribes to the north in Castleclose, as evidenced in several battlefields near the Great Border Wall, which itself was built on top of ruins of the old Viridian Wall which was built to ward off invaders from the north. Not much else can be gathered about the Viridian civilization, because their language is strange and unknown, as linguists have tried to match it other languages around the world. Since their language was so strange and foreign, historians cannot decipher tablets and scrolls found in underground vaults that are believed to hold some of the most important documents of their civilization, and possibly hold the answer of why their civilization collapsed, which still remains a mystery today.
The medieval ages were some of the darkest days for the Castillian Race. Several tribes had formed after the Viridian Empire collapsed, which constantly waged war on each other, while the Closian tribes to the north became civilized and built castles to protect themselves from the tribal warfare to the lands south of them. Many of the tribes had adopted cannibalism as a result of a lack of order. None of the tribes dared to enter the cities that their forefathers had built, because of taboo their society had developed.
It was not until the 15th century when French and Italian sailors had shipwrecked on the Viridian Isle when exploring Greater Dienstad. They stayed with the Closian people in a nearby castle, until a search party came for them. Several French and Italian colonists arrived the next year to start a new colony governed by both the French and Italians. They built a large castle similar to the Closians, and named the colony Castille de Italia, meaning Castle of Italy. Within weeks, the colony was nearly wiped out by the native tribes, with the remaining colonists sailing back to their homelands. The British Crown, seeing this as an opportunity to humiliate France, sent a contingent of troops and several hundred colonists, and began to rebuild the colony. The tribals at first continued to wage war, but were badly beaten in several skirmishes, and British raids on their camps broke their will and forced them into submission.
The British assimilated the tribals, and converted them to Christianity, teaching them how to farm and fish instead of eating other humans. They taught the tribals English and soon, the broken Viridian tongue that the tribals had spoken had faded from existence. The British continued to maintain the Castille de Italia colony until the Queen raised taxes higher and higher, until the colonists declared independence. Seeing as Greater Dienstad was a great distance from Britain, the Queen allowed it and the Republic of Castille de Italia was born in 1694, based upon the democracy that the Greeks had developed.
The Republic did not last however. In 1737, several disgruntled land barons and government officials staged a coup, forming a new empire based upon the old Viridian Empire, and incorporated Catholicism. The Imperial Theocracy of Castille de Italia was formed on December 22nd, 1737. In 1739, it pushed into the frontier to the north, conquering massive amounts of land, and vanquishing tribes by the dozens. It eventually reached to the Viridian Wall, which was by then fortified the Closians, who wanted to curb the imperialism of the Empire. The first Emperor, Thaddeus, was crowned on December 7th, 1737.
Thaddeus, also known as Thaddeus the Great, ruled from 1737 to 1789, when he died of old age. His son, Brutus, was crowned Emperor, and began to send ships to fire upon fishing communities and raid cities along the Mokan coastline. This prompted anger from the Mokans, and was quickly resolved when a Mokan ship sunk the Imperial Navy's capital ship, the ICN Flavius, killing all onboard including Emperor Brutus, in 1799.
Brutus was succeeded by Aurelius Valerius II, the son of Brutus' late brother, Lord Aurelius Valerius I. Aurelius Valerius II reigned from 1799 to 1846, after dying of poisoned food. Aurelius II was not a popular ruler, often criticized for his alleged orgies and warmongering.
Aurelius II was succeeded by Flavius Xtopherus Valerius, who became one of the most popular Emperors in the history of the Imperial era. Flavius brought about massive social reform, creating a social security program, brokering peace between the Empire and many of the Dienstadi nations, and ending the border conflict with the Kingdom of Castleclose. Flavius ruled for sixty years, with his tenure ending with his death in 1926. He was succeeded by his son, Flavius II. Flavius ended many of his father's reform programs, effectively dooming the Empire financially once the Brick Street Crash of 1927 came around. Flavius was assassinated by his military officers and many of his Consuls on March 15th, 1927, one month after the stock market crashed.
Flavius II was succeeded by Lucius Valerius III, who ruled between 1927 and 1994. Under Lucius, many of the powers that belonged to the Emperor were delegated to the Lord Regent, and the Empire was transformed from a world power to more of isolationist state. During this time, the culture of the Empire flourished, bringing about peace for decades. When Lucius died, Titus Valerius I took the throne and began to disassemble the isolationist state that his brother had built. Titus routinely kept Imperial Legionnaires at war, building a military order within his senior leadership and modernizing both military and civilian aspects of life.
Titus was not one of the worst of the Imperial rulers, but his leadership would bring about the downfall of Empire. His rule from 1994 to 2004 would be one of the most prosperous but also the most infamous in history.
