SO I have been reading up, So many countries could build nuclear weapons right now if they felt like it.

And North Korea has brought new means to tactical nuke, with the largest confirmed blast at 7kt.

Yeah but why would they have a reason to?


Designing a dedicated plutonium production plant is not a challenging undertaking and its significantly cheaper and easier to build then a full blown plant.

After you have the plutonium its only a matter of good engineering and expertise with explosives before a bomb is constructed or even a factory to produce said bombs.

it doesn't even need to be a country, a small well funded group with significant expertise could do it.

Korea has the capability to build, or have already built, as many as 20 kiloton-region weapons, and recovered missile bodies in the Sea of Japan were modified in a way that could be used to accommodate nuclear warheads.

Yes. The tricky bit is getting it there.
You can kill most things with nukes. They're good that way.

Velk believes the Mk48 can just kill a Longsword by buckling its hull.

Erm... why? Because it's resource-intensive? Or because it's big? Or... what, exactly?

I follow that folks are uncomfortable with it. But the physics and technology is there. It's just a different way of addressing the geopolitical environs of NS.

Well, I guess this harks back to what Questers (I think) said about realism - if it's something a real nation would build, it's realistic. Otherwise, it's "merely" feasible. Questionable politics and resource allocation would swing over to the edge of feasibility.

You know, you really should look into developing a cheaper way of getting sea-based OTH radar coverage. Like maybe a floating receiver and transmitter array that can be towed behind a pair of destroyers sailing a few dozen kilometers apart.

I will, as you say, examine this option. If I can make it work, I will, but too many variables atm for me to accurately conceptualise the system. Hence this inelegant brute-force solution.

Actually, now that I think about it, how does a Longsword even work? From what I've read about OTH radar is correct, the receiver and transmitter arrays have to be something on the order of kilometers apart. Which means that one of them would have to be at the Longsword's bow, and the other at the stern. Except that the transmitter and receiver also have to be a kilometer or so long, which means they'd have to be running the 1,200m length of the ship; except that they can't do that and still be kilometers apart. Am I missing something here?

Not necessarily quite so far apart, although that was the old standard. There are other layouts that include a single transceiver, or transceiver array (eg, Nostradamus (French OTH system)), but you are correct that it's the standard. The technology is still moving forward. Even JORN isnt exactly old-hat.

It has to be guided somehow. Destroy the guidance platform, obscure the target, jam something.

Alternatively, deploy one of its 256 ~2Mt ABM weapons.

Honestly, I'm curious how you plan on evading an ICBM with tungsten rods instead of nuclear warheads. It's not like a Longsword can do evasive manuevers...

It's not the tungsten bits that you engage, ofc. It's the ICBM itself, or the satellite/delivery system. Those elements of the weapon can be engaged, and the loadout of a Longsword (and a competent RP-commander) should have that in hand.

Emphasis on competent. Most folks don't read the details anyway...

It's an extreme example, but in this post, the Longsword doesn't fire at all. But plenty of ground units do.
