Dragon

Postby Carcorodine » Sat Feb 22, 2014 10:38 pm

Dragons are peculiar creatures, beings of paradoxical extremes. They are far more bestial than mortals, and yet vastly more wise. They are revel in brutal violence, and yet are responsible for many great stores of knowledge. They are greedy to a fault, and yet always honor their agreements. They are full of hubris and pride, and yet always treat those they judge worthy with the utmost respect.

Dragons are very magical, with many of their vital bodily abilities being entirely magic-based. This includes the ability to speak, the ability to breathe fire and their extreme strength. If they lost their magic, they would be unable to speak, unable to breathe fire and comparatively weak. They would still be extremely dangerous creatures easily capable of wiping out armies, but they would be shadows of their magical selves. Luckily however, their magic is generated inside of their body and is difficult to reverse or block without directly getting inside of the dragon. Thus, an anti-magical potion would need to pierce their scales or be ingested to function on them, as simply splashing them with it would do nothing except give them a particularly annoying rash.

Stages of Life
A dragon's life has several stages arranged in a somewhat peculiar way. They change from quadruped to humanoid back to quadruped over their life and periodically stop growing before undergoing a massive growth spurt.

Hatchling
Upon being hatched, a dragon is a quadrupedal flying creatures that is about the size of a dog. During this stage they are entirely reliant upon their mother for food, as they cannot yet fly long enough to hunt for food. They are however by no means defenseless, as many fools who thought to slaw a dragon hatchling when its mother was away discovered. The fact that hatchling dragons are always encountered with three or more of their littermates increases their dangerousness exponentially. They grow to the size of a small horse around the time they are 2 years old, whereupon they then begin to grow into an upright position.

Adolescent
During this stage, the dragon assumes a generally humanoid form. Despite the name adolescent, they are by this point roughly equivalent in physical size and mental ability to a very fit and well-educated human adult. During their adolescence, they primarily grow in terms of mental ability and magic. In fact, their physical growth ceases once they assume an upright posture and will only resume when they end the adolescent stage and return to a quadrupedal form. The adolescent stage is generally when the dragon is at their most adventuresome, and adolescent dragons will oftentimes end up getting themselves killed in some sort of adventure. Adolescents dragons are also a lot more friendly towards other species than fully grown dragons, something that usually ends later in life when they, as an Adult trying to gain territory, are vilified as a monstrosity. When they reach 75 years of age, the dragon begins to resume their quadrupedal posture and exits the adolescent stage.

Adult
The adult stage is the second-to-last form of a dragon, where they return to their quadrupedal position. During this stage, the dragon will grow larger every year at an increasingly high pace. Of note is that this physical growth is based around diet more than anything else, with the dragons that eat the most growing the largest. They will also grow mentally and begin exhibiting the extremely powerful magical abilities of a dragon. It is around this stage that their instincts begin to kick in and they are overwhelmed by the desire to accumulate treasure and carve out a territory. This is also around the time where the commoners begin to despise them and adventurers/treasure hunters will try to kill them. Dragons that had good relationships with mortals during their adolescent stage will often be horrified and confused by this, although they will eventually accept that they are now viewed as a monstrosity. This stage is also when a dragon becomes fertile.

Elder
The elder stage is the final form of a dragon and is distinguished from the adult stage by slower (but still significant) physical growth, extremely advanced mental faculties, and magic more powerful than almost anything short of a God or an even more powerful elder dragon. A dragon is required to be in the elder stage to be a Dragon Lord. Elder dragons will usually also begin to focus more upon accumulating magical knowledge and power rather than physical treasure. This is the last stage, as afterwards the dragon falls prey to the Square-Cube Law and dies of either complications of the cardiovascular system no longer being able to pump blood to their entire body or their own weight crushing them.

Psychology of a Dragon
Dragons are a very power-based species, with their psychology being based around the accumulation of power and wealth. This makes them both very greedy and very wise, as they are just as interested in secrets and magical knowledge as they are in gold and jewels. Indeed, some of the most powerful dragons are actually far more interested in knowledge than anything else.

While dragons are often believed to pillage and steal, and will in fact do so if they believe they must, they actually prefer to make trades and deals. They will trade something from their treasure horde in exchange for something they see of equivalent value with no hesitation, as they have little interest in the specifics of their horde and more interest in the total value of their horde. While in theory such an equivalent exchange would have no actual effect on their horde's total value, in practice mortals often trade very unique and useful objects like enchanted swords or the armor of a famous hero for common and useless trinkets like gold or jewels, of which there is always more.

Dragon Sexuality
Dragons become sexually aware in their adolescent stage, although they only become fertile in their adult stage. Generally, in their adolescent stage they are somewhat adventurous and will often agree to things that they would reject in an instant had they been older. For this reason, adolescent dragons are known for having sexual relationships with other species, something that is nearly unheard of amongst adult and elder dragons.

Dragon mating rituals are very centered around strength, as a dragon with a weak mate is seen as also being weak by association. As such, rarely will a pairing of dragons have one easily identified dominant partner. Male and female dragons both are very dominant and very powerful. It is thought that this will result in the most powerful offspring.

Dragons are rarely monogamous, although they do generally favor repeating encounters with the same partner. They will also often have a favored partner, but will rarely ever being sexually involved with only one other dragon.

Reproductive System
Dragons have a reproductive system that does not properly match any other species, being closest to a hybrid of reptilian and mammalian systems. If you do not wish to learn about the specifics of dragon sex, please skip to the next chapter. But why wouldn't you want to know about dragon sex?

Female dragons are consciously fertile, their reproductive organs remaining in a state of disuse and infertility until they decide they wish to become pregnant. When a female dragon activates her sexual organs, she generally goes into heat and remains very aroused until she has reached climax. When not actively fertile, dragon females are still capable of physical sex and are noted to enjoy it quite a bit. However, they cannot become pregnant until they consciously enter a state of fertility. Female dragons do not have breasts in adolescent or adult form, and their vagina is protected within a pelvic cavity hidden behind a large retractable scale when not in usage.

Male dragons are always fertile, with their reproductive organs in a constant state of activity. This does not mean they are are constantly having sex or in a permanent state of arousal, but simply means that their sexual organs are always ready on a moment's notice. Male dragons enjoy sex to a higher degree than female dragons, but both sexes are very enthusiastic about mating. Male dragons possess a single penis that is retracted into a cavity within their pelvic region when not in usage and is protected by a large retractable scale. Male dragons have two internal testes deep within their pelvic region. The pelvic cavity that stores a dragon's sexual organ is distinct and different from an avian's cloaca, storing only sexual organs. Intestinal and urinary passages are separate and distinct structures.

Sexual Shame
There are a variety of sexual actions that are viewed as extremely shameful when performed by or with a dragon.

Being the penetrated partner in anal sex is considered shameful. This is mostly an issue of pride, as dragons view being anally penetrated as a shameful and demeaning act, as being underneath another dragon who is pleasuring themselves with your body is seen as an admission of weakness and submission to somebody else.

Being penetrated by an object other than a penis is also considered to be extremely shameful, as it is seen as being forced to derive pleasure from the acts of an unfeeling object that cannot share or understand that pleasure. As such, it is seen as making the dragon lesser than the object they are penetrated by.

Being forced into a sexual encounter, raped in other words, is one of the most shameful acts possible as it means that the dragon has been forced into sexual submission and pleasure against their will, something that is such an impact to a dragon's pride that committing suicide after being raped is very common in dragons, although not before they kill their rapist.

Being anally raped with something other than a penis is the worst shame possible for a dragon, as not only does it force them to sexually submit but it also forces them to feel pleasure from the actions of something that does not itself feel pleasure from the act. Generally, the only honorable course of action following this is to kill the perpetrating party and then commit suicide.

Interspecies Mating
Dragons usually only have sex with other species while in their Adolescent stage, which also happens to be the point at which they are entirely sterile. As such, half-breeds are very rare. They do exist however, as a few races are fertile with dragons.

The most famous example of this is the God Caniso, who periodically mates with dragons he finds to be interesting and gives them Spawn offspring. If the interesting dragon is female, he simply impregnates them. It usually takes two weeks for the spawn to be born. If the interesting dragon is male, he assumes female form and himself becomes pregnant. He returns in two weeks and gives the male dragon a Spawn of Caniso.

Dragon Breeds

Leatherwing Dragon
The archetypical dragon, Leatherwings are usually only referred to as such when differentiating them from the dragon species at large. Leatherwings are the second largest breed of dragon and the most common, however they are also the least specialized. They are generalists and usually lack specialized talent, at least in comparison to other breeds. Built very powerfully, but still agile and maneuverable fliers.
Leatherwings possess considerably larger claws than other breeds, more powerful muscles, and a tail that ends in a very sharp very hard sword-like tip. They generally simply rip and tear apart their enemies, favoring the usage of their claws and sharp tail over other means of combat.
Generally shades of brown, grey, and dark green.

Firestorm Dragon
The second most common breed of dragon and third largest, the Firestorm dragon's name often causes confusion. All dragons can breathe fire, it is simply that a Firestorm dragon can also manipulate this fire to a degree not seen in others. For example, they can perfectly manipulate the temperature and shape of their flames.
Firestorm dragons are very similar to Leatherwings in terms of body proportional, with similarly large claws and muscles. Their tails however do not have the same sharp point as a Leatherwing. While they rely upon their fire breathe during battle, they are also very capable of killing without using it.
Generally shades of red and orange.

Frostbite Dragon
The third most common and fifth largest, the Frostbite dragon has an even more confusing name than the Firestorm dragon. They do not control ice or cold, instead being able to manipulate their internal temperature to allow them to survive in regions where even other dragons would freeze to death.
Frostbite dragons are covered in thick fur, as well as more stocky than other breeds.
Generally shades of grey and white.

Thunderbolt Dragon
The fourth most common and sixth largest, the Thunderbolt dragon actually has a somewhat correct name. They have a mastery over the weather, being able to manipulate it to cause thunderstorms and lightning. They are also able to cause soothing rains and sunny cloudless skies, but that is a lot less useful in a fight and so didn't impact the naming choice. Extremely aerodynamic and unmatched in agility, but not very hard hitters.
Thunderbolt dragons are less physically strong than other dragons, their muscles being meant for rapid and repeated movement rather than powerful single hits. They also have very long tails that can be used similarly to a whip, as well as used to create a thunderclap-like sonic boom. They rarely stay still when in a fight and rely on superior agility to defeat foes.
Generally shades of yellow and grey.

Crystalball Dragon
The fifth most common and fourth largest, the Crystalball dragon is named such for its peculiar colorless eyes. They are skilled in enchantment and runic magic, and so are highly valued by Dragon Lords. They are more frail and slender than other dragons and are less skilled at physical tasks, but are very naturally attuned to magic and enchantment..
Crystalball dragons are somewhat wimpy in physical terms, neither strong like a Leatherwing nor agile like a Thunderbolt dragon. They are very slim and not particularly muscular, although they are very dexterous and considerably longer than other breeds. They rely mostly on magic and hit-and-run tactics when in a fight.
Generally shades of purple and indigo.

Titan Dragon
The rarest and largest dragon, the Titan lives up to its named. Titans are notably mostly for their massive size, however they do have the disadvantage of being too large and stocky to fly. Because of this, they are almost extinct and the few that remain are in hiding.
Titan dragons have less proportionately muscular bodies than Leatherwings, but have far more mass than any other dragon. For this reason, they are very dangerous if they can manage to land a hit. They are somewhat slow however and have poor reaction times.
Generally shades of rich brown and dark grey.

Associated Species
There are a few species that are associated with dragons, including lesser draconics and a few servant races.

Drakes
Drakes are about the size of a horse and lack wings, but are capable of breathing fire and are very strong. They are non-sapient, but are highly intelligent and smarter than almost any non-draconic animal. They also come in very high numbers, often with several dozen serving a single dragon. Drakes create nests around that of their host dragon, with drake eggs being considerably smaller and drake hatchlings developing a lot faster than those of dragons. Within a mere year, a drake grows from a hatchling to a fully grown adult drake.

Wyvern
Wyverns are also similar to drakes in being rather tiny for draconics, but lack a different set of appendages. They are also bipedal. Their wings and arms are fused in a manner similar to a bird. While they can use their front appendages as either arms or wings, they prefer to use them as wings. This makes them very air-based and wary of the ground, rarely landing if they can help it. They cannot breathe fire, although they are highly toxic and their bites are often lethal to mortals if untreated. Wyverns are the most easily domesticated of draconics, having a mentality somewhere between a cat and a dog. They range from being the size of a chicken, to being about the size of a horse.

Wyrm
Wyrms are truly massive desert draconics that are about as large as a dragon, with the key difference being that they lack any appendages at all. No wings and no legs. Wyrms do however have very powerful mouths and move surprisingly rapidly when beneath the sand. They are not toxic, but rather acidic. Their saliva can burn through solid steel in seconds and can even melt dragon scales if not properly dealt with in time. They are however very rare, having been largely hunted to extinction long ago. They are somewhat more intelligent than the drakes and hydras, but are still far beneath the intelligence of a true dragon or other sapient being.

Hydra
Hydras are water-based draconic creatures notable for their ability to grow three heads for every one cut off or destroyed. Of course, this doesn't work very well against the dragons whose fire breathe instantly cauterizes the wound and prevents any new heads from growing. Hydras are about as intelligent as a drake, although far less social and with more of a predatory mindset. They are also even more toxic than Wyverns, being able to kill most mortals simply by breathing on them and even immobilizing dragons if they manage to bite them. For this reason, as well as their ambush predator behavior, hydras are the most hunted of the draconic species - both by the dragons themselves as well as by the Dragonslayers (who have by this point largely made peace with the true dragons).

Goblin
Goblins are favored by dragons as minions because they share the greed and ambition of the dragons, something that makes them very useful for protecting and organizing the dragon's horde. Goblins are usually both scared and in awe of dragons, obeying them with a mixture of worshipful zeal and terrified obedience. Goblins, like drakes, breed very fast and mature very fast. The average goblin birth is in the form of triplets, and they will usually mature to adulthood within six months.

Spawn
The Spawn are the result of a dragon mating with the Carcorodine God Caniso, being fusion of coyote and dragon traits with powers from both parents. They mature slower than drakes and goblins, but are in turn vastly more powerful and intelligent. Spawn are somewhat beneath true dragons, but are perhaps one of the closest creatures to them. Indeed, Spawn are actually roughly as powerful as the divine beasts of the Physical Gods when fully grown.

Dragon Hierarchy

Dragon Emperor: The strongest dragon alive, the Dragon Emperor (Empress if female) is the leading Dragon Monarch, being respected above all others and honored as the greatest of the entire dragon race.

Dragon Monarch: Dragon Monarchs, Kings if male or Queens if female, are the five most powerful dragons. The first of them is also the Dragon Emperor, with the other four serving as the Emperor's council and lieutenants.

Dragon Lord: Dragon Lords are those dragons powerful enough to be recognized as powers but still beneath the Monarchs in power. There are a hundred or so Dragon Lords, most of them being unimportant but a dozen or so competing to become the next Monarch when one of the current five dies
