Political Parties
While political parties hold relatively little power in the grand scheme of things, largely due to the fact that the Empire's upper echelons of government are all supervised by either the Tsar himself or by his appointed advisers, they do hold some say in provincial and municipal matters. As the Empire of Volzgrad is a strictly controlled nation, only a handful of very closely supervised political parties are given a pass. Most of these parties are, unsurprisingly, very loyal to the Tsar. Others, most notably the so-called 'Septembrists' act as an opposition party and tend to drift more to the democratic side of things. Communist and far left parties are universally banned and claiming to be part of one can be punished by up to twenty years in prison.
Official Parties (Municipal and Provincial):
Black Hundreds: A Strictly authoritarian party and highly supportive of the Tsar and Empire, widely regarded as staunch patriots and defenders of the Catholic church. Strongly against Liberalism of any kind and prefer wider government control. They support more government regulation of the economy and are stalwart supporters of Volzgrad's immense military budget.
White Guards of the Empire: More commonly known simply as the 'Whites.' Despite their name, the WPE is not a white supremacist party and the word 'White' in their title refers to the fact that they were they head of Volzgrad's White Army during the Civil War. They are in many respects highly similar to the Black Hundreds, which is unsurprising considering the Hundreds were a more radical offshoot of the Whites. The WPE is also a strong supporter of the Tsar and Church, but they tend to be more liberal in issues such as same-sex marriage and environmental issues.
Union of Imperial Citizens: Widely regarded as the most centrist of the Tsar-supportive parties, the UIC straddles the line between supporting the Tsar and being netural. Its powerbase tends to lie in the lower classes of Volzgradian society, particularly rural inhabitants. They are the most supportive of a Free Market Economy and tend to hold a great deal of support in unions.
Party of the September Manifesto: Known as 'Septembrists' in short, they are the most liberal and pro-democracy of the Volzgradian authorized parties. Their name is an allusion to the so-called September Manifesto, which was a document that brought limited democracy into Volzgrad during the reforms of 2005. The Septembrists' platform is largely based on continuing democratization of the Volzgradian government and changing the role of the Tsar from autocrat to symbolic monarch. Unsurprisingly, this platform makes the party quite unpopular.
Banned Parties:
Communist Party of Volzgrad: The front leader of the Red Guards during the Civil War, the Communist Party was declared defunct immediately after the War's conclusion due to the fact that most of its high ranking members had either been killed or put in labour camps. The sheer mention of the party's name is said to bring disgust to any Volzgradian.
Red Reformation Front: An unofficial successor to the CPV, the RRF was a short lived revolutionary faction present between 1992-1994. It waged a minor guerrilla war in the Empire's western provinces mostly involving occasional suicide bombings or assassination attempts. The majority of the RRF was destroyed in a prolonged and brutal suppression by the Okhrana. The RRF survived slightly longer on the colony of Rynibar and it had a brief moment in the spotlight due to the murder of two Volzgradian soldiers, but it to was crushed swiftly.
