Poverty in your nation

Postby Prime Mountains » Thu Jan 02, 2014 6:09 pm

Since I haven't seen a single thread about poverty, I decided to make one myself.

Basically, this is just a typical "Answer the following questions about this topic" thread.

Is your nation developed, or under-developed?:
What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation?:
What would a poor neighborhood look like?:(You can use a photo, but you can describe it in words if you want to)
Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?:
If the question above is answered with a yes, how many citizens are on welfare?:
What is the typical health of a poor citizen?:
What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation?:
This nation does not feature my views. But when it comes to stuff like LGBT and Religion, this nation shares my views on those.

My nation is filled with plant people and naturist humans. Because realism is lame!

Virtually all public reasources and public systems are poured into non-market regions (non capitalist regions) for the fact that the law forbids any governmental help for wealthy regions (Usually business districts, but not excluding foreign born wealthy citizen districts)

Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?:
Yes there is a "system" of "welfare" but in the fact that non-market regions don't use the "business currency" that is only used for foreign exchange and trade. So everyone is on "welfare"

Is your nation developed, or under-developed?: Developed enough for most people to have more than enough to live, some areas are cities and skyscrapers, some areas are rural, some areas are protected forest/natural area wild life sanctuaries.
What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation?: less than 1%, (those less than1% qualify for welfare except they are unable to get welfare or charity because they are kidnapped or something, and the government attempts to make sure all who qualify are able to receive welfare if they want it including anti-kidnapping laws)
What would a poor neighborhood look like?: Freemopia doesn't have poor neighborhoods. The poorest neighborhoods are categorized as lower middle class.
Some houses and gardens like this:
Image
Image
around a worksite (usually manufacturing), far enough away to be protected from pollution if there is any. The worksite usually trains its employees, otherwise a job training program attached to the work site trains people how to do that job. Small clinics/hospitals are located 1 per 100 people.
Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?: Yes. There is welfare, and generously tax deductible private charity.
(house(picture below), $1000 worth of supplies, cell phone with small solar panel charger, healthcare for testing for and treating physical health problems, birth control, security, and a government no interest, credit wont go down if not repaid, No collateral, confidential loan to those who can’t afford it, where they don’t have to pay it back until they have over $33,000 man made property value, to learn how to make survival products (renewable energy, water purifiers, heating and cooling, shelter, soap, medical supplies and services for testing for and treating physical health problems and birth control, ...) People are given more based on their need. They are able to customize their package/have a choice in what they receive(including things not included in the standard package) as long as it’s for physical survival.
Image
Image

If the question above is answered with a yes, how many citizens are on welfare?: Between 5-25% about.
What is the typical health of a poor citizen?:
Image
Freemopia relocates many very poor from other nations to Freemopia, they receive welfare immediately, there health is sometimes very bad and adequate medical care, food, care... if given to restore their health.
What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation?: The poor parts tend to be secret dungeons that Freemopia's government is trying to find, and punish the offenders, and free the victims.
The lower middle class parts sometimes have a problem of being poorly armed, thus sometimes they are targeted by richer criminal Freemopians as easy prey. Crime is generally low in Freemopia.

Is your nation developed, or under-developed? Developed

What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation? Less than 1% remain in poverty for an extended period; about 10% are poor if you count those who had "unfortunate results" in a raid or who got suckered into one of the countless scams in operation (the latter group will usually recoup its funds fairly quickly by simply raiding a softer target and succeeding at it).

What would a poor neighborhood look like? Rust is the predominant feature of a perpetually poor area. All of Cybertron's buildings are made of metal. The better areas use corrosion-resistant stainless steel or better and top it off with rustproof coatings (paint, clear sealant, and plating are all popular options), but poor areas can only get regular uncoated steel. They also can't afford to coat their buildings fast enough to prevent rusting.

Is there welfare or something similar in your nation? No.

What is the typical health of a poor citizen? It depends on if they are of the group that has found poverty to be a lifestyle, or if they are only temporarily broke. Maintaining a Decepticon body requires regular oil changes, tune-ups, and the replacement of any parts that wear out. Those who failed a raid or fell for a scam will usually get themselves more money before any of this is a problem, so they will be in excellent or at least good health.

Those who are perpetually poor, on the other hand, have health to match. They are typically rusty, misfiring, have broken internal parts, run loudly, and may even be burning oil and visibly spewing out clouds of black smoke. The mind, if housed in chips that have begun to corrode, will be as degraded as the body - though the specifics of mental errors can vary, they will eventually become severe.

These bots do not live long at all. Being a robot has only one real catch to it that we can think of offhand: We can theoretically live forever, but without proper maintenance, physical failure comes much more quickly than it would for a human of equal financial standing. A destitute robot will be scrap in 5 years if he's lucky, and usually, he will come to a violent end much sooner than that.

What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation? Scroungers.

Unlike the junk-pickup scroungers that are ubiquitous in the better areas, the ones in and around the slums are violent. Their name is actually a bit of a euphemism: "Hunters" would be far more accurate. These gangs go through the slums looking for the malfunctioning (and therefore weak) robots described in the prior question. They call themselves Scroungers for one simple reason: Those who pick up scrap have always been known as scroungers - and to them, a weak robot is nothing more than scrap.

When they find a victim, they disable him enough to allow them to haul him to the foundry. Usually, it is not necessary to kill him; he will be functioning badly enough that a couple of blasts to the knees will do - but the gangs are heavily armored just in case. The armor only is needed in about 1 in 500-1,000 cases. Most of the time, collecting broken-down robots is just a matter of finding where they have hidden.

At the foundry, the captured bots are sold as "whole body scrap." Usually, the bots will still be alive and fully conscious as they are weighed and then dropped unceremoniously into the smelting pit. The Scroungers make 3,000 Energon Cubes for each bot so rendered - enough money to ensure that several gangs are always in operation in each slum.

This practice will not only NOT be stopped by the government, but is directly supported by its Leader. Though government forces aren't involved, market forces certainly are - and the market for raw metal is controlled by Megatron Metals. All Leader Megatron would have to do to stop it almost entirely is order his company to not buy any metal that came from those who were still alive during or just prior to smelting. As the only buyer of wholesale metal, such a move would greatly diminish the market for whole-body scrap of dubious origin (though it would be possible to obfuscate the origin of this metal, the need to do so would add enough inefficiency to make violent scrounging no more profitable than raiding easy offworld targets. Without greed in the picture, only the true sociopaths would continue the activity.).

Instead, Megatron Metals quite pointedly lets foundries know that it will buy ingots from ANY source - a statement that is quite correctly interpreted to mean that it's fine if people kill each other for their metal content. It is his opinion that since only true Decepticons are worthy to use Decepticon Steel, it's only right to reclaim it from those who obviously are too weak to qualify - by smelting them down!

Though brutal, Megatron's policy is extremely effective at motivating the population to avoid physical and mental weakness at all costs, and in turn, the poverty that often causes it. Almost everyone will come up with enough bravery to go forth and raid, or even take a job for a short time, rather than end up as the weak, malfunctioning prey of the Scrounger gangs.
No war RPs; no open RPs.

In smaller towns one would often find socalled hofjies, much akin to their Dutch predecessors that have been set up by the local municipality around a courtyard with access to allotment gardens. In some parts of f.i Handelshaven one would find blocks of apartment blocks that are (much like the other forms of social housing) virtually indistinguishable from the other homes or apartments with generally the same access to all local amenities.

The Commonwealth is a National Community and thus has a fully developed welfare state including social housing, free tuition for all and a national single-payer healthcare system.

If the question above is answered with a yes, how many citizens are on welfare?:
In the Commonwealth there are welfare payments for the poor, the students, the unemployed, struggling smallholders and farmers, young parents (both married and single), caregivers, the handicapped, the infirm, widows, the elderly and there are plans of instituting a living wage. As for now it can be estimated that around 6% of the population is on some sort of welfare.

Is your nation developed, or under-developed?
It's actually between the two. The majority of the population live in developed areas and there are those that live in undeveloped areas.

What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation?
According to official government statistics, 11%. Approximately 60% of that number are in urban slums with the remaining 30% in under or undeveloped rural areas.

What would a poor neighborhood look like?

Image

Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?
Yes.

If the question above is answered with a yes, how many citizens are on welfare?
About 8.2% actually qualify for welfare. This is because urban slums are generally not recognized by the government as being "official" parts of the cities, as many slums were built illegally on unused or undeveloped land, especially during the economic crisis of the 1980's. As a result, all of the inhabitants of slums are ineligible for government services because of this lack of recognition.

What is the typical health of a poor citizen?
Surprisingly good. Many in rural areas are subsistence farmers and grow their own crops and raise their own livestock. Those in urban slums have access to basic food and health services thanks to cottage industries.

What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation?
Urban slums are notorious for crime. In many of them, they're considered "no go" areas for police and other law enforcement personnel under normal circumstances.

Is your nation developed, or under-developed?: Most developed, but there are some underdeveloped areas

What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation?: 12%

What would a poor neighborhood look like?:(You can use a photo, but you can describe it in words if you want to) http://aphs.worldnomads.com/terrihorner ... G_2373.jpg This is extreme poverty, though in which shanties are built on the river. A neighborhood of employed poor people may just consist of a few old, rundown ranchers, barns and one-story homes.

Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?: There are programs but only for the extreme poor and these expire every three months. Most alms are provided by the churches.

If the question above is answered with a yes, how many citizens are on welfare?: About 0.07% of the population

What is the typical health of a poor citizen?: Moderate, for the most part. Those who live in extreme poverty, though, often have very bad health.

What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation?: Crime, of course but also hunger. Poor neighborhoods are often located in cities or non-arable land so many cannot even survive by growing plants and raising animals in their gardens.

Is your nation developed, or under-developed?: Developed, though most rural areas still rely on lanterns and farming, rather than the predominantly industrialized cities.
What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation: 18% (fluctuations are common)
Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?: Absolutely not, the only system even remotely close to that of welfare is charity provided by private industry and citizens.
What is the typical health of a poor citizen?: Reasonable, though outbreaks of disease and death from exposure are not uncommon.
What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation?: Disease, exposure, outbreaks of cancer due to chemical waste. Since most impoverished citizens live in slums and shantytowns constructed around cities, they are commonly used by other citizens as unpaid labor, which has become an increasingly problematic issue for both the rich and poor. Riots have also become a considerable issue, as many poor or jobless citizens believe they are treated as second-class citizens. Drug abuse has also become a notable problem, with many citizens becoming sources of crime, both organized and unorganized.

Is your nation developed, or under-developed?:
We prefer to think of it as "less developed" and it's by choice. We don't believe in development for its own sake.

What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation?:
We don't recognize the concept of "poverty". There are people in Fatatatutti who have no money at all but who live very comfortably.

What would a poor neighborhood look like?:
People with more money sometimes use it to buy a bigger house. Otherwise, the living conditions and the size of the house have little correlation with income.

Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?:
Every person living in Fatatatutti is entitled to a Guaranteed Annual Income. There are also many free soup kitchens, food banks, shelters, hostels, etc. There are no programs specifically targeted at "the poor".

If the question above is answered with a yes, how many citizens are on welfare?:
In any society, everybody is on welfare. Do you build your own roads or does society do it for you?

What is the typical health of a poor citizen?:
Excellent. We have free healthcare for all.

What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation?:
Getting the right wax on your surfboard.

---
'Is your nation developed, or under-developed?': >
YellowApple, Inc. classifies itself as "under-developed", given that being
"developed" implies an absence of further development and - hence -
stagnation. However, by the standards of the international community,
YellowApple, Inc. is "developed".
'What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation?': >
Approximately 15% of all YellowApplan citizens are documented as having a
"severe" or "marginal" income deficiency. Individuals and families with
deficiencies of those classifications are referred to as "Low-Income
Individuals and Families" ("LIIFs").

A "severe" income deficiency is defined to be a household income lower than
the cost of living for a particular local jurisdiction over a given temporal
unit, while a "marginal" income deficiency is defined to be a household
income greater than the minimum cost of living by 0-5%
'What would a poor neighborhood look like?': >
There is not really such a thing within YellowApplan jurisdiction; LIIFs
typically reside either in communal housing (in the case of a frontier
colony, small settlement, or other remote facility) or in housing subsidized
by either YellowApple, Inc. or a local authority (the latter being preferred
and the former only stepping in if the local governing body is incapable of
managing its own finances or otherwise is under direct YellowApple, Inc.
control).
'Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?': >
Yes. "Welfare" typically assumes the form of housing and food subsidies, as
well as a modest advantage in the hiring process for most businesses,
YellowApple, Inc. included. Monetary payments are usually provided in cases
where other expenditures need to be addressed; such payments are typially
provided in order to pay for personal communication devices or to allow for
the repayment of outstanding loans/debts. Healthcare expenses are also, in
most cases, subsidized, and YellowApple, Inc. offers gratis health coverage
to LIIFs.
'How many citizens are on welfare?': >
All LIIFs documnted as such are eligible for support by YellowApple, Inc. or
a local authority. However, of all LIIFs (approx. 15% of all citizens),
only 78% have filed to receive support.
'What is the typical health of a poor citizen?': >
Good; no better or worse than any other citizen. Most cannot afford the
advanced robotic prostheses that wealthier YellowApplans tend to receive
upon injury, however.
'What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation?': >
Crime. Many LIIFs turn to criminal operations in order to augment low
household income or as an outlet for the stress associated with having
insufficient income to meet or exceed an area's cost of living. The most
common crimes are monetary theft and sale of contraband substances, but
violent crimes - particularly those associated with gangs and other
organized criminal groups - are also more prevalent in cities with lower
average incomes than they are in cities with higher average incomes.

Is your nation developed, or under-developed?: Very Developed, all urban areas (like cities) look like Tokyo or New York. In rural areas, farmers are very wealthy or just middle class, but they all own the latest farming equipment.

What is the percentage of citizens living in poverty in your nation?: Less than 2%

What would a poor neighborhood look like?: No poor neighborhoods whatsoever

Is there welfare or something similar in your nation?: Of course! Social Welfare is our number one priority.

If the question above is answered with a yes, how many citizens are on welfare?: Everyone

What is the typical health of a poor citizen?: They look like normal citizens cause they are supplied with clothes and stuff in help/welfare centers.

What is a common problem in poor parts of your nation?: Don't know really, there are no slums in Desmendura as all the poor were sent to help/welfare centers where they may live till they can get enough money/or find a job.
