The Western Chronicle Network (WCN, sometimes shortened to Western Chronicle) is an Erucian private journalism company owned by Jefferson Andrews, the acting Chairman of WCN. Founded in 1870 and operated out of Palmont City, Palmont, it is the premier news provider in the Democratic Union that reports through printed (The Western Chronicle), televised, online and radio news services. This allows the group to provide a wide array of reporting to a larger audience than restricted, single-outlet news services.

With a large holding of journalists, WCN is able to provide news from most locations on the planet: both domestic, regional and international. All reporters contracted by WCN are held to rigid expectations: journalists are expected to preform their duties with honor and truthfulness, with the goal of providing honest news to the world citizen. In addition, all articles and reports given on WCN provide fresh and complete stories, avoiding one-sided bias or preference.

Using these guidelines, WCN has succeeded in maintaining an honorable reputation domestically as a trustworthy news provider. In addition, the Western Chronicle Network is a member of the Pardesian News Network, a multinational initiative designed to cover significant events in the Pardes region to local Pardesians and the wider international community.

Western Chronicle Network is a subsidiary of Western United.

"The Western Chronicle Network has, for 153 years, prided itself on providing news to everyone from the everyman to the elite. And for those 153 years, the sense of honor that has been held at the very center of our journalists and staff has allowed our group to prosper and maintain a sense of accuracy that has been frighteningly decreasing in modern reporting outlets. Armed with pencil, paper and voice, our journalists have maintained this sense since our early days of being a small firm operating out of a two-story brick office building in what was to become downtown Plamont City.

The paper boy was the first to deliver the news, standing from his point at the bustling sidewalks and shouting out headlines as he waved the latest edition. From the paper boy arose the horse-back courier, who took Western Chronicle papers from the stone street's corner to outside of the big city and to the countryside settlements and ranches. Couriers traded their horses in for cars, taking part in the turning of the technological era just as the rest of the world was changing too. Radio soon took flight, and WCN followed. Television followed, delivering the truth not just through sound, but through sight. The internet brought the newspaper online, and thus expanded the audience from millions to billions.

In short, WCN has been there alongside of the world: evolving and changing, just as the world did. But the one thing that did not change was our sense of honesty, and the desire to deliver the truth to the people.

Thus, I pride myself in being a part of Western Chronicle Network."

Talwall, DEMOCRATIC UNION - Following yesterday's press conference and questions as to the Democratic Party's next candidate for the 2025 elections, acting President Tao Wong stated that he was going to attempt to seek his party's nomination.

President Wong, the 2021 election winner and the staple of the Democratic Party during their election, is already the youngest president in Democratic Union history having been elected at the age of 41. Currently 43, the young president initially faced criticism for lacking the hard-liner focus of the previous Conservative pick, Richard Tanner. Wong's focus on diplomacy, domestically and internationally, has drawn the irk of his opponents: the lowest point in popularity for the president came earlier this year, at what is seen to be his failure during the Second Adwestian-Falsean War to both properly-outfit the armed forces and making the decision to abandon the conflict.

"No previous president has ever decided to stand down at such a point in war," Daryl O'Hara (C-NH), the current Governor of North Halton and prominent Conservative Party politician stated in April of this year. "It is a disgrace to the pride of the Erucian people to stand down over such a mere subject as the loss of a spy plane, and at how poorly our president has interacted with the SHEANAM."

The SHEANAM, the headquarters of the DU Armed Forces in Talwall, had been subjected to budget cuts of $20 Billion by the Wong Administration, the latter citing that the SHEANAM's funding had "risen to titanic levels since the Presidency of Richard Tanner, allowing the bloating of various defense contracts". However, following the entrance of the Democratic Union into the Second Adwestian-Falsean War, the budget cuts were instead reduced to $15 Billion. In defense of the withdrawl of DU forces from the war, the Wong Administration had earlier repeated its defense of the scorched earth tactics and destructive nature of Falsean-allied combatants along with decreasing support for the war from the Democratic and Labor Parties.

Additional criticisms laid against the young president include the continuing civil unrest caused by Transhumanism movements, as well as the counter-movements of Prohumanism, and what has been called "the backtracking of the Administration on the subject of the military."

Transhumanist and Prohumanist movements have long been at odds with one another, although the dwelling of social concern over both subjects following government rulings and regulations as to such corporations as the Letanos Group came into affect in late 2021, which was initially hailed as one of the early successes of the Wong Presidency. However, the recent revival of protests devolving into rioting has put the government on the spotlight as to dealing with the issue.

Militarily, the Wong Administration announced its position of giving strength to the military following the months after the Second Adwestian-Falsean conflict, which is still fresh on the minds of some Erucians. "Our brave soldiers need to be prepared in all possible ways in the occurrence of another war. While they certainly showed their merit during the conflict, and the withdrawal was certainly not a failure of the armed forces, it showed us that modernization must be continued at all times," Secretary of Defense Ronald Jensen stated in a conference in June. "We are still keen on keeping our budget from becoming costly, but this can be averted through appropriate spending and averting waste."

Still, almost all critics of the president agree that many of their complaints come from Wong's youth in-comparison to prior presidents. "While he certainly bought in a lot of the younger voters, he just doesn't have the experience our country needs from a leader," continued Daryl O'Hara from the same April statement. Even this has showed signs of fracturing within the Democratic Party as to choosing Wong as the Democratic party-elect for the elections, although supporters claim that they have nothing to worry about.

"Perhaps our president's youth is the greatest thing for us to hold," commented Congressman James Hadeway (D-OR) following Wong's persuading of his party to come to a deal with the Conservatives on firearms background checks in September. "If (Wong) makes a mistake, he learns from it and comes back stronger. And nevertheless, he's still succeeded in getting (the Conservative and Democratic) parties to cooperate on legislation. Our nation has taken punches before and has come back even stronger: President Wong certainly has and still is doing the same."

Budget cuts and giving strength to the military are mutually contradictory. Unless he sticks to a single stance, there is no way he'll pull through to win the nomination, support from younger voters notwithstanding.

@DeviantLamb: Stop fooling yourself. Wong's been bringing down our national debt and has actually done useful things. Did Tanner ever bring down debt by a dozen million silbers? Did Tanner get Congress to actually get off their asses and cooperate? Seriously, punks like you need to go ahead and learn to actually do a little research instead of just listening to TBC all day.

Come on now. Wong is seriously one of the worst presidents we've had in years. Richard Tanner was a better president, if only because he didn't cause our debt to skyrocket. Nor was he a coward.

Wake up Erucia! Don't let these crooks keep stealing our money!

Talwall, DEMOCRATIC UNION - The Twin Amanitte Empire of Itailia has approached the Democratic Union over joining NOCTUR, inviting President Wong to the Italian capital of Ebonaevaron to initiate talks.

"We wholeheartedly welcome talks of an agreement over trade. In these trying economic times, it is important to continue strengthening both the domestic and regional economies," President Tao Wong commented earlier today before departing for the meeting on Air Force One alongside of the Secretary of State. "Including ourselves within NOCTUR will be a benefit to all involved."

NOCTUR, or the Northern Co-Operative Trade Agreement, is a treaty signed by the nations of Italia, the United Republic, Elsovakia and the Holy Roman Empire establishing a trade bloc. It is intended to encourage cross-border trade across the northern Western continent in Pardes, and came into formation in June of 2013. It superseded the prior Elso-Itailian Trade Agreement between Itailia and Eslovakia, which was intended to hold a similar result on a smaller scale.

Most economists have agreed with the Wong Administration's decision, citing that becoming more involved within the region will likely bring immense benefits. "Trade has always been known to be a highly lucrative business, and will be a great strengthener of relationships between participating states," economist Marissa Lambert commented on the meeting. "We've known this for generations, and we need to develop our partnerships with nearby nations. I believe that, if this trade agreement succeeds, we can safely say that we'll be seeing more Emmerian and Eslovakian products on our market, allowing consumers with a more diverse choice. One moment, you'll be buying an Emmerian M18 at a sporting store, and the next an Eslovakian-made car."

Also agreeing is Ulysses Thompson, a spokesperson for the SHEANAM. "Not only would the average consumer benefit, but so would the Armed Forces. The proposition of a trade agreement means that the military can begin to seek out a more diverse market of contractors. This not only gives the military a wider array of high-quality pieces of equipment to choose from, but also makes our domestic contractors work harder and therefore create even better products to keep up with competition. It's a win-win."

Not everyone feels that NOCTUR is beneficial, however. Some economists and consumers instead see that NOCTUR produces a threat to Erucian domestic manufacturers and businesses, since the treaty promises to bring in more outside goods. "The problem will become that our economy won't improve with trade, but it will suffer," Micheal Humphery of the Erucian Merchant's Coalition stated to WCN. "More and more, Erucian manufacturers are choosing to go oversees for their factories, eliminating Erucian jobs. Furthermore, an influx of cheaper foreign material is likely to destroy domestic business."

The Erucian Merchant's Coalition, a subsidiary of the Erucia First group, is an association dedicated to battling for the rights of Erucian small business owners and manufacturers. They have consistently been protesting against the gradual increase of foreign products on the Democratic Union's market since the 1980's, when they were first formed. Numbering at least three million strong, the group has staged a protest alongside of other members of Erucia First in the capital of Talwall.

"I'm sick of seeing all of these foreign-made products ending up here," a protester who asked not to be named stated when interviewed by WCN. "I don't like how we keep letting foreign companies come in and destroy our mom 'n pop stores. Us small business owners are already having a hard enough time trying to fight large corporations. Why must we fight large corporations from Erucia and dozens more from outside?"

As for the response to the protestors, economist Marissa Lambert offered another statement. "If small business owners are complaining about how they can't compete with large corporations, they need to learn to offer something that large corporations can't. You can't just offer one service in this world anymore: you have to specialize. More and more bookstores are offering author signings and including coffee shops inside of them, so why can't a department store or a sporting store learn to do the same?"

I agree with Merissa. Small businesses should adapt with the times or get out. I know I'm gonna get a lot of flak for this, but everyone else is adapting to the new age. Why can't businesses? More and more things are becoming personalized today. Maybe my local store can offer some kind of personalized service that the big box store can't.

Wolf City, Orelson, DEMOCRATIC UNION - Following the release of images showing the full operational power of Wolf City's police force, the debate as to how far departments are allowed to go in equipment usage has returned to the center stage.

Earlier this November, WCPD officers responded to a bank robbery at a Bank of Erucia establishment in the downtown district of the Orelson city. The robbery itself ended without violence and with the suspects surrendering following a 24-hour standoff between them and police, but images released showing SWAT teams using newer armored cars and the department's Blackhawk fleet have resparked the debate over whether or not departments are overstepping their boundaries.

"It's a violation of the constitution's 3'rd article, plain and simple," stated outspoken civil liberties activist and noted libertarian Dakota Wineston in an interview with WCN. "It used to be that police departments worked hand-in-hand with the community, promoting a peaceful atmosphere. Nowadays, they're making more and more hostile moves. Do police departments really need to use tanks and military helicopters?" Individuals on Wineston's side of the debate have called into question the continuation of equipment purchases by police departments around the Democratic Union, which had originally began following the terrorism concerns of the early 21'st century.

In modern day, most police and sheriff's departments hold specialist officers on special teams intended for use during emergency situations. Most of them are referred to as SWAT teams, or 'Special Weapons And Tactics' units by their respective departments. The origin of the SWAT team in Erucia began in the 1970's following a series of deadly shootings and the inability of regular officers to respond to the situations.

Since their formation, SWAT teams have been regarded as the elite of each police department: equipped with the best equipment purchasable on the law enforcement and government market. In addition, state governments as well as federal agencies have adapted their own variants of the SWAT team, usually even better armed than local variants.

But many critics of the modern police department have cited that SWAT teams never were as militarized as they are in present day: rather, they were simply specially-trained officers. "Many SWAT teams of the past were armed with rifles that simply weren't given to regular officers, and they either used the same cars as regular officers or modified heavy delivery vans," analyst Harriet Cox remarked in her online article, The Society, which holds about 3 million followers. "They weren't outfitted with all the fancy stuff that makes the modern officer feel like a walking tank, which in-turn makes the modern officer far more deadly of a threat to the average citizen rather than the criminal: they were given what they needed for the job. Furthermore, the regular police officer is armed on the same level as a SWAT officer 10 to 20 years ago. They have assault rifles and body armor: so how do police departments justify the need for SWAT teams? After all, a regular officer can be trained to the same scope."

Many police departments and supporters disagree with critics statements. "As we can tell through the Wolf City incident, SWAT teams are certainly a needed part of every department. They show their worth on the field every day," Chief of Police Kate Beckett spoke on the subject, who leads the Palmont City Police Department and the 40,000 duty officers it holds. "While I hold the utmost faith in the officer that we see every day, they're just not prepared mentally for what the SWAT officer is forced to deal with. That is why these elite officers are required at the bare minimum five years of beat service and one year of prison service: because they are forced to deal with the worst of humanity's offerings on a daily basis."

Nicholas Martin, a police analyst and writer of the CopLife magazine, agreed with her statement during an interview with WCN. "Today's criminal varies from the unlikely suspect to the dangerous paramilitary. We need to remember that criminals evolve: the bank robber or crazed militiaman of today likely owns an illegally-obtained rifle capable of punching right through the average police car. And while that in itself is not true always, police departments need to be ready for whatever threat the community faces. The reason that we use armored cars and mine-resistant vehicles is because we need to protect our specialized officers in the face of an extreme threat. I'm not saying that police officers need to regularly be carrying rifles and riot shields, but that they need to have those in case they face those threats. The end goal of our officers is to make sure that everyone goes home safe: that's the good day that we all strive for."

I'm not saying that I know a whole lot about the police department of today, but what I am saying is that I don't think they're exactly armed to a military standpoint. I'm just sick of all those gang-bangers who try to prevent the police from going into the ghettos to prevent shootings, but as soon as there's a shooting, they let them in and complain to them over having lost a kid.

The moment our police are militarized is the moment when I see them mounting machineguns onto their cars. And I sure as heck haven't seen it yet.

Come on now: why do we accept these jackboots doing all the stuff they do nowadays? Giving them all of these military-grade weapons and APC's is just giving them excuse to keep being idiots. I live in Ashton Plain: they just rolled in with all of that crap back during the Occupy movements back 10 years ago, and they did exactly the same during the Transhumanism protests.

I was part of both. They're never around to protect us, but as soon as we try to protest, they roll in and curbstomp us all.

Talwall, DEMOCRATIC UNION - Following the finalization of the long-awaited signing into NOCTUR, the President's return from Itailia has also had the rather unexpected result of a signalling of Erucia's military growth.

The NOCTUR talks, which had initially begun in late November, had been placed on hiatus following a terror attack on Thanksgiving Day. The attack, which had initially begun as a deal between independent members of the Tippercommon Sussex Corporation selling chemical weapons to Emmerian Terrorists, spilled over into the southern state of Avalon, where the Sussex independents were subsequently shot down by Emmerian and Erucian fighters after attempting an escape on multiple helicopters. The fighting occurred largely within the town of Blackden, in which local law enforcement and Avalon National Guard fought against the would-be invader, although the large portion of the helicopters were shot down some 17 kilometers from the southern border.

The fighting had subsequently resulted in the deaths of several Sussex and Emmerian terrorists, as well as the death of a single Avalon Army National Guardsman due to the release of chemical weapons at the second crash site and the injury of countless more on several sides. The current investigation into the independent cell by Emmerian, Erucian and Sussex authorities is still ongoing.

Upon the President and Secretary of State's return to Itailia amidst criticism from Conservative Party members in early December, the NOCTUR talks were again paused during the Red Christmas Bombings that killed the Itailian Archbishop as well as what is believed to be around 550,000 Itailian Catholics. The President and his entourage was again flown out of the country for several days, and returned in mid-December.

However, through the cancellation of the traditional Presidential holiday for Christmas week, the President and Secretary of State officially signed the treaty alongside of the Imperial Caesar and Archon earlier on Christmas Eve, bringing all of the Democratic Union the Christmas gift of entry into the Northern Co-Operative Trade Agreement: along with it, what is called by supporters entry into a new era of economic prosperity.

"With entry into NOCTUR, Erucians can be expecting to see greater economic improvements and changes in their daily lives," noted economist Marissa Lambert, who had earlier been a supporter of joining the organization. "Not only will we have greater trade with important nations such as the United Republic and Itailia, but local manufacturers can expect to see their markets widen out." And already, this is proving to be true: several DU companies are reporting that they're setting their sights on the wider international markets, and shareholders are seeing the benefits.

However, the entry into NOCTUR has also brought one more thing to the Democratic Union: two new naval fleets. Courtesy of the Caeser himself, the DU's entry into NOCTUR also has brought it two entire carrier fleets worth of additional vessels, which had only recently been completely built in Itailian shipyards. Amongst these are two brand new Ark Royal class supercarriers, three Mairne-class Hospital ships, and countless different support ships for the two carrier fleets. The cost for all of this?

"Our Itailian allies have been so gracious to grant these new ships free-of-charge, although it would be improper of us to simply walk away with the reward," President Tao Wong reported in his press conference earlier today. "We will pledge our support to the Twin Amanitte Empire, economically, militarily, and humanitarian-wise."

The sudden and rather unbelievable arrival of the new naval vessels has sparked new-found support for the Wong Administration, which had been criticized earlier this month for failing to provide adequate military protection along the border, despite the official SHEANAM report on the Thanksgiving Incident stating: "No harm has been found on the part of the Democratic Union Air Force nor its controllers. Rather, this committee finds that the military response to the Sussex incursion was fast-paced and as well timed as possible."

With the new fleet's granting, the SHEANAM now hopes that the Erucian populace will see that the military is doing all it can to prepare for future military incidents. "The Navy has gone on a recruitment run to simply staff the new vessels," SHEANAM spokesperson Ulysses Thompson stated during a congruent conference yesterday, on the 26'th. "Overarching DU military power is bound to increase, and with entry into NOCTUR, the required revenue to support financing the new vessels will not be an issue. We will need all we can get, after all, considering the recent tensions in the region."

Despite winning over much of the criticizing elements of the Conservative Party over with the show that the government is serious about maintaining military strength in the wake of the recent flares of potential conflict, more hardline groups members are still citing the cost of the new fleet and the inability of the new ships to address the primary problem. "Even if we can somehow pull the funding for these new ships out without increasing the deficit or increasing the tax rate, they're still not addressing the root of the problem," Daniel Brown (C-AV) answered to WCN. "These new ships won't help with quick response to military attacks, considering the crews will take at the very least several months to train. The Administration and the SHEANAM should be looking into fast-responses to foreign aggression."

I don't care if we got this new dual-fleet for absolutely nothing in the short term, it's utterly useless and detracts from our military strength. We still need to train the crews, fund the munitions, fund the planes and their repairs, fund the ships, etc.: a matter that will take ages of meddling to take care of. What's the benefit right now, when we really need it?

Glad to see the Wong administration doing some good! Surely this will win over the critics: seriously, what does this guy have to do to actually get some support from the Conservative Party?

They keep asking him to do so many things, and then once he does them, they want him to backtrack and do the complete opposite.
