The Interregnum Draws to a Close, Where do the Candidate's Stand? How has the Empire Fared During The Last 20 days? Questions Answered.

Image
The Assassins are currently the executives in power.
Rome, Italy- With just an hour and a half remaining in the Interregnum, nervousness has risen awaiting for the Senate doors to unlock and reveal the next emperor of The Roman Imperial Republic. The senate doors have been sealed for more than two weeks, as factions debate and vie for the Roman throne. Governors have already voted for their choice, and so have the senators. The last proceeds are now coming in from the Plebeians in the City and Province of Italy. Early speculation, though unconfirmed, is pointing towards Quintus Aelius Gallus, a moderate from Spain.

The Country has been focused on these elections, but How has the Empire Fared during this time of crisis? Surprising well. The Power vacuum left by God-Emperor Leto was seen as a potential for insurrection and destruction on a wide scale. This theory has fizzled. The only protests erupted in Lagos and Johannesburg by African Union separatists, which were quickly put down and all members put to death. Some 300 were crucified in Lagos, and 600 in Johannesburg. The Mongol-Tibetan rebellion has continued in eastern Sina, with some 346 Legionnaires (Legio VI Sinata) being killed in a terrorist attack on a base in Lhasa. The rebellion began near the end of the Derman War, and continues its ghastly guerrilla tactics to this day. It has been six years.
Image
Protestors in Johannesberg. All have been executed.

Daily life continues for Roman Citizens as well. The Markets has taken a recent growth with news of the Imperial Succession being concluded. Food from the provinces is immense, and so are manufacturing, and the people continue to prosper. New entertainments abound, the Plebeians feasted for the last four days on the newly minted Festival of God Blackwell-Apollo, of Gordano and Lysandus. The Ludi Blackweli were also instated from the will of Emperor Leto, with Flamma once again becoming champion of the arena and killing thirteen enemies. Some 16,000 Gladiators were sacrificed to God Leto (in their glory) across the Empire, as well 578,000 animals killed in reverence of the Divine King Blackwell. Extra Police will be in force for the Bacchanalia of next month.

House Aelius elected, and Gallus is now Emperor.

Image
Emperor Gallus

Rome, Italy- As of 12:45 AM, Quintus Aelius Gallus has been elected Emperor of The Roman Imperial Republic. After a tenuous two weeks of negotiation, The Senate doors opened last night in a flare of triumph for Democracy and monarchy. Emperor Gallus emerged from the Senate House clothed in the purple toga praetexta, and crowned with the laurel wreath. The other candidates fortunately raised no protest, and kissed the signet ring of Emperor Gallus. The armies also received the news with joy, and hailed him the 'Imperator'. The Tribune of the Plebs signed their approval as well.

So, who is our Emperor? While Gallus is not divine like Leto, saying 'Sex and sleep alone make me conscious that I am mortal.' Born in Spain, Emperor Gallus grew up with the noble, yet impoverished, House Aelius. Descended from the likes of Emperor Trajan and Marcus Aurelius. He was a professional racer at his High School during Emperor Hadrian (II)'s reign. Leaving with his school with High Honors, Quintus entered the University of Madrid to gain a degree in History. His academic career was mostly successful until the Crisis of Succession following the death of Emperor Hadrian. At this point Quintus decided it would be best to change course, and left university to join the Legions. Stationed in the Legio IX Hispana, Quintus saw action quickly. Fighting in the War of The Anglo-Dutch succession under Julian, as well as the African Conquest, He was 'hardened' (As he called it) by the death and destruction. He advanced through the ranks and made Centurion in his sixteenth year of service. Most recently Quintus was commander of a garrison during the occupation of the Derman Iles, although he has never commented upon his fighting in the war.
Image
Legio IX

His senatorial career, has been quiet. Being moderate, Quintus supported several initiatives to bring more power into the Senate, but mostly if they were to give civil freedoms to the Plebeian Classes. This populist garnered many enemies, including former opponent Lucius Sulla. Economically he is still populist, only supporting Socialist Laws that benefited the Plebeians. He is most famous for Co-Writing the law with Emperor Leto guaranteeing free healthcare to all Roman Citizens regardless of Class or Income. His time as Tribune of the Plebeians saw more Vetoes on government laws and spending than any other Tribune in the history of the office. Already 45, and now single, The future looks bright for the Empire.

Shocking Reforms.

Shocking Reforms on the First Day of Office!

Image
Proposed New Roman Borders

Image
The Brothers Gracchus are Gallus' Personal Heroes.
Rome, Italia-A flood of laws have entered into the Senate queue after the first twenty four hours of Imperial Rule. Emperor Gallus has proposed what he calls the 'Lex Aelius de Plebianus'. While it is mostly just tweaks to tax codes, meant to ease life for the lower classes. Major and universally changing reforms were also included. Three are the major focus of debate in this monumental piece of legislation.

Plebeian Clauses-The Emperor, in this bill, grants new and heavily expanded powers to the Tribune of The Plebs. Thus far, The Tribune has been more of a Vice-President (in the USA sense) to the Consul. The tribunes are to be sacrosanct—that is, no one will be allowed to touch them. Any attack or disregard for Tribune and his Veto (more on this soon) will be a capital offense, and punishable by death. With this sacrosanctness the tribune can now potentially use his intercessio to Veto any action of any government minister. This also extends to any policy change, from minor to Senate Law. During times of extreme crisis (such as during the tribunate of Tiberius Gracchus), a tribune might use a form of blanket obstruction, which could involve a broad veto over all governmental functions. Tribunes will have the authority to enforce the right of provocatio ad populum, which will be a guarantee of due process. If a magistrate is threatening to take action against a citizen, that citizen could yell "ego te provoco!", which will appeal against the magistrate's decision to a tribune. The tribune will bring the case before the College of Tribunes or the Plebeian Council for a trial. Any action taken in spite of a valid provocatio is on its face illegal.

Imperial Compression- This portion, being under the Imperial umbrella has already been enacted. Roman forces and magistrates have all withdrawn from the Chinese Provinces, as well as all provinces beneath Africa and Libya. The emperor has declared the Empire as 'Too Large.', and a 'beast that must be contained.' He is allowing Africa to stay under roman influence, but will continue to pay tribute and resources to the Roman state. China and East Asia is completely abandoned. The Borders have been restored to their size under the rule of Emperor Augustus the Great. Provincial rule, while not federalized, has been given more rule to the plebeians. The provinces have reorganized and each given several 'regios' where the Plebeians will rule their own cities, and must negotiate with their Nobility for Local laws. This reorganization now allows the Plebeians to seek and hold Senate office.

The Senate begins deliberations tomorrow, and the third piece of legislation will be revealed as well.

Portugal and England Declare War Upon Stomalia!

Image
King Alfonso VII and I
Guimares, England and Portugal-In his first week of reign, King Alfonso has declared war on the Christian Nation of Stomalia to fight against its invasion of The Kingdom of New Europe. A naval fleet has been deployed from Wessex and is now hauling its way to the coast of New Europe. Five squadrons, and five air-wings are the Anglo-Portuguese order of battle. Requests for aid in this endeavor have also been sent to nations that wish to help. Emperor Gallus has already refused direct aid, but has armed them with some new state of the art weaponry. Contacts have also been made with the Anglo-Dutch Union, as Imperial Spy Reports have told us.

To Roman officials, and nearby nations, this action is being seen as a puffed chest to show the power that England and Portugal has. King Alfonso has taken the throne with weak claim, being a Portuguese foreigner. He speaks no English, and has moved the Capital and Court to Portugal, much to the anger of the English Parliament. Where under Kings James and Robert, Portugal was the lesser member of this odd personal union. Under Alfonso, England has been subverted by the Portuguese, risen from the ashes. Trade is beginning to expand, and their are rumors of an Anglo-Portuguese expedition to Asia (abandoned by Gallus), harkening back to an era of Portuguese dominance in Japan and England in India. How much Gallus would let this happen, remains a mystery.

The goals of this war are also mysterious. We have unconfirmed reports that the Anglo-Portuguese will free the lands, while others that a forced trade agreement will also be enacted. we will report more on this this soon. As of now the Royal Fleet has docked in the Canary Islands, preparing to move again at sunrise.

Emperor Makes State Visit to Gordano and Lysandus

Image
'The Egg of Perpetual Peace' Given to King Blackwell I

Image
The Imperial Airship, Caterina
Straits Palace, Gordano and Lysandus- His Imperial Highness, The Emperor Gallus, has arrived in Gordano and Lysandus for the first State visit to the principal ally of the Roman Empire. The Emperor, new to his throne and the first of his line, hopes to continue the friendship fostered with this nation by his predecessors. While the meeting itself has only begun, we can foresee a variety of topics already being laid out on the floor. From the issue of Prince Tiberius, to the Foreign use of the Roman Military, The Emperor has a lot left on his plate from the past dynasty.

'The initial greetings were warm and had a friendly atmosphere' attests Attendant M. Valerius Magnus, an Imperial Servant. The Palace where they met was well decorated with Roman banners and fine carpets, fit for any monarch. Frugality was not taken by either side of this meeting. Emperor Gallus announced to the world that Blackwell now has a furnished palace, called the 'Olympic Palace' on the upper slopes of Mount Olympus in Greece. The construction of it was begun under Leto, and finished only recently with one renovation by Gallus. It is estimated to be worth at least 1.4 Trillion (1.2 Trillion US Dollars). Following the emperor was a procession of Statues, Clothing and Weaponry valued at 81 Million (70 Million USD). The Highlight of the day was the final gift. A Faberge type egg, the size of a grown man, was presented to the magnanimous King. Emperor Gallus armed with its key unlocked it, revealing a gilded interior, and a heart shaped (And sized) Red Diamond in the center. It was later revealed that the Metal of the egg was rhodium, an incredibly rare substance. The 61,000 Carat Gem, combined with 1000 pounds of metal contributed to a gift worth 175.2 Billion (146 Billion USD).

This sort of spending is very rare with Gallus, so it goes to show how committed to friendship he is. In the future we may see more common work between nations with this emperor at the helm. His humanist thought does indeed guide his process of rule, and his relation with both foreign nations and the Senate. What could be next? Only the future knows. The Imperial Airship has left the Straits Palace, and the meeting has only just begun, but with this good foot forward is a sign that only good can from this meeting. Rome has a future, and will not be going into it backwards.

Emperor Gallus Announces Betrothal to Russian Tsarina

Image

Image
The Flag of The Holy Russian Empire
Rome, Italia- We here at BIRT have just received a telegram telling us that Emperor Gallus has entered an engagement with Tsarina Natalia Romanov of The Holy Russian Empire. This empress is more known throughout the world as an international pop star who's singles are dominating the Roman Charts. The Holy Russian Empire has seen this as a deal that benefits both nations in positive ways. "The Russias recently went through some kind of plague that devastated their population, and this nation was formed from it. Their country is very new, but we saw this a very good deal. Rome now has influence over the Russian nation, and Russia gains an international stepping stone through me. That and she is also quite beautiful, even though she would rather be a performer than an empress" is what Emperor Gallus told us in the recent telegram.

The Holy Russian Empire is indeed new, the result of an internal revolution against the former regime, and the installment of the most legitimate descendant of the Romanov line. The then Burlesque dancer was elevated to the most powerful position in Eastern Europe, whilst also launching her performance career. The agreement on how much she is actually in control is very low, as Russia is a theocracy created by the Russian Orthodox Church. The marriage however, will be a symbolic joining of two large nations who only meet at the Black Sea. The Russian Empire is very conservative in social values, yet the Tsarina is incredibly open about her own sexuality as well as circumventing laws of the Patriarch to prevent damage women's rights.

The organization of the era after the wedding itself has already been ironed out. Rome and the Third Rome will be ruled in a quasi-personal union by both Emperor Gallus and Tsarina Natalia. Going against past politics, Emperor Gallus has signed an agreement with Russia that both empires will be inherited by their first born child. In the event of twins or triplets, the Empires will be split between them. All other things, including the wedding, are totally unknown. BIRT will continue to update you when briefs come in.

The Imperial Courtesans Reborn, and Other News.

Image

Rome, Italia- It has been a hectic week in Rome, as Emperor Gallus has been meeting with the Assassins in the Omnius room attempting to avoid the breakout of a war between Rome and a few nations. Rome's watch of the peace conference for the Invasion of Stomalia was abruptly attacked by an unknown terrorist group linked to Hawkwick. The Emperor immediately ordered a quarantine on the peace meeting, being held in Shadeland. After an attempted download of Omnius, the assassin group there was attacked by Shadish forces and most killed except for Leonardo, the Grand Master. 'Leo' whom is famous for being the lead designer for Omnius, The Drones, and Rome's Tactical delivery systems, is now apparently in negotiations to end this conflict. Specific information is hard to acquire, and Shadeland is being jammed by Omnius.

In other news, The Emperor has called for the Reformation of the Holy Order of Imperial Courtesans. The group is described as an exclusive sisterhood whose members train their bodies and minds through years of physical and mental conditioning to obtain 'superhuman' powers and abilities that can seem magical to outsiders. Sometimes called "witches" due to their secretive nature and misunderstood powers, the Courtesans are loyal only to themselves, and to the female members of the Imperial Family. Their every move is calculated toward a result. As the skills of a Courtesans are as desirable as an alliance with the Sisterhood itself, they are able to charge a fee to school the women from Great Houses, and install some of their initiates as wives and concubines to their advantage. the Empress Theodora is quoted:
The Courtesan must combine the seductive wiles of a courtesan with the untouchable majesty of a virgin goddess, holding these attributes in tension so long as the powers of her youth endure. For when youth and beauty have gone, she will find that the place-between, once occupied by tension, has become a wellspring of cunning and resourcefulness.
—from Hadrian, Family Commentaries by the Empress Theodora

It is expected that Soon-To-Be Empress Natalia will join their ranks.

Imperial Courtesans Begin International Breeding Program

Image

Rome, Italia-The Mother Superior may have been gone, on a diplomatic trip to Shadeland, but the Reverend Mothers did indeed meet for the first time in 600 years. The meeting itself, consisting of the some 23 Reverend Mothers and their attendants are all that make up the Imperial Courtesans. This was set to change, however. The discussion eventually led up to the discovery of two main problems for the organizations main goal. Rome's genetic pool was too thin to begin another breeding program, and could cause more problems than it would enhance. It would not be a case of inbreeding, but not enough diversity. The first match of the program has already begun, with Emperor Gallus set to marry Tsarina Natalia of Russia. The other problem was that the noble families were no longer jockeying for power, now that Gallus' reforms had gone through. The Courtesans seek now to create international peace by matchmaking for other nations and empires. We can arrange same sex weddings depending on the laws of the nation(s) the homosexual(s) (or any other 'sexual') come(s) from. This type of arrangement will take longer, as this is not as a common (OOC: As much as I want it to be).

The Group itself, if applied and accepted will expand into said nation, will begin training women there to attend the breeding program, as well as being empowered through the enhancement of their own humanity. The goals seem clouded, but they seem like this: 1. The Enhancement of the Human Species, Physically and Mentally 2. International Peace, through love and marriage. 3.The Empowerment of Women everywhere.

The Courtesans have officially announced that they will begin conversion efforts in nations that agree. They will begin to convert natives and tribal populations to the religion of God-Leto, and create Reverend Mothers from the priestesses.

Religious Reforms

Emperor Gallus Declares New Religious Reforms

Image

Image
A Roman Augur
Rome, Italia- The religious of the empire, some 87% were surprised this morning when the Emperor, also Pontifex Maximus, announced that he was calling a council of augurs and pontiffs to recodify and rebuild the Codex Sacra de Leto, the sacred text of the Imperial Religion. Approximately 60% of the empire profess this faith, and the other 40% are followers of the other major religions. The text itself, much like the new testament, is an account of the life and 800 year reign of God-Emperor Leto. It is divided into three major sections, Leto's Jihad, Leto's Peace, and the Words of Leto (A Collection of His Quotes and Prophecies). Mostly known as 'The Codex', many have called for a recodification since its creation by the Assassins after the death of the God-Emperor. This recodifcation is not, however, a suprise to the scholars of the empire, after discovery of several journals buried in the Arabian peninsula. These personal journals belonged to Leto himself, and were kept from throughout his reign, a personal account to the thoughts and actions of our God-Emperor.

The surprising move however, was the declarations of evocatio. A old empire practice, this was what the empire did when it encountered other faiths. Thor and Jupiter, Bacchus and Osiris. Any deity would have been added to the Roman Pantheon. This time the three major religions of the world and in Empire are being evocated. Seeing the connections, and in his wisdom, Emperor Gallus declared that Judeo-Islamic-Christian God was a manifestation of the God-Leto, and that portions of their Holy Books shall be included into the new Codex Sacra de Leto. It has been seen as a way to bring the empire together, under one fold. Recent polls show this action has a 56% for and 44% against. Opposition has grown from both religious conservatives who see it as a violation of their beliefs, and atheistic liberals who see it as an unneeded attempt to shove religion down people's throats. This unlikely coalition has formed upon the Senate floor, which is currently writing a bill to block this meeting. It is futile, however, because the Emperor is Pontifex and has unilateral decisions on the State Religion, and may act without senatorial approval.

(ADDED IN LATER)

Another addition has been made to the faithful book of Leto. Emperor Gallus, a few minutes ago, has declared an evocatio on the Hindu and eastern philosophies. Reconciling them with Leto and the Stoic Philosophy, The Codex has now officially tripled in size. Rome has begun to create an international outreach, so that diplomatic encounters can now have a better social-cultural understanding. The Offical Addition list is as follows:

1.The Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Laws, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Nevi'im

    2. The New Testament: Gospel, Apostles, Epistles

    3. The Entirety of the Qur'an as well as the Masnavi of Sufi and Selected Hadith

    4. Hindu/Buddhist Texts: Upanishads, Vedas, Puranas, Gita, Sutra, Bodhisatvara, Avatar

    5. Zen Buddhist Texts: Koan Answers, Ohashi, Hui-Neng, and Eisai

    6. Chinese Books: The Tao, and Analects.

Imperial Heir Finally Born

Image

Brundisium, Magna Graecia-Another sign of stability now and in the future has appeared with the announcement that Empress Natalia has given birth to a boy, thus allowing for the empire to have a smooth succession upon the death of Emperor Gallus, of which will be very far away. At this moment the child and the exhausted empress are being cared for by the Imperial Courtesans in their Chapterhouse at Brundisium. The empress went into labor at approximately midnight (standard time) two days ago and had been in labor until around six this morning. The emperor himself was not able to attend, due to him being in Britannia touring the forts. No news has been reported about the labor itself.

The child has been named Caesar Publius Aelius Basileus Gallus Augustus. His mother has called him Basileus for short. The name harkens the child's dual heritage as both the heir of Rome and Moscow. Basileus is the Latin name for the Russian 'Vasily', which was a common name amongst the former Tsars. The child is to be raised collectively by the Imperial Courtesans until he is ready to receive the Toga Virilis at age sixteen. After this, he shall receive his physical and strategic training (for the military) personally by the Mentor Leonardo of the Imperial Assassins. He is in perfect health, and already wearing his bulla, handmade by his mother.

A Crackdown on Christianity Begins throughout The Empire

Image

Rome, Italia-A Raid in the night has provided a new spectacle today in Rome as some three hundred Christians (150 Catholic & 150 Protestant) are now set to die in the Colosseum for breaking the religious laws of the empire. Although the faith has been banned for seven-hundred years now, the empire as usually allowed them to practice in secret so long as they keep it out of public life. This changed when Gallus added the Bible to the Imperial Religion in order to unify the empire. Expecting the violent response, he has ordered a general purge of all known 'Palliatus' (Those who are known as Christians and still hide it. Some 460,000 people) and other hidden sects. After these first two weeks, some 10.000 have been captured and are being executed publicly. This is causing tensions with the Vatican, who nearly refused to resign their treaty with Rome that allowed for their existence. So far the punishments have been traditional: Crucifixion, Lions, Burning, and Scourging.

This law was created during the Great Purge of God-Emperor Leto. At the time hundreds of thousands of people were being executed for not meeting the Emperor's standards for his 'Silver Road' to save the empire from destruction. Millions perished in the end, and the law was the only one that survived his benevolent-oppressive 'One-Hundred Requirements' that codified as to who was going to live through the purge. As said before, it was largely ignored by successive emperors until only recently. However, It is still seen as Leto's wish, for the creation of a new Holy Book from the existing material was his idea (found in the Secret Journals). Gallus took this wish to heart.

Image

Finding the unknown Christians has been more of a challenge. Thus far, some seventeen Hidden Catholic Churches have been burned along with four Protestant ones. Documents seized from them are being used to track down their members. Fingerprints, Skin Samples, and anything regarding genetics are being used to hunt the Christ Cult. Recently created for this very purpose, Ichneumon (Above) are large hunters that can 'sniff' out Christian enclaves using a method that is still secret. They are still unstable and are prone to attack their prey and dismember them before they can be legally captured. This problem is being overlooked by most however. What this will mean for diplomacy will unfold in the time to come.

The Fascist Government of Gran Colombia and Peru toppled.

Image

Bogota, Colombia- As of two hours ago the Fascist Government of Gran Colombia has been toppled in a bloodless revolution led by liberal college protestors. This comes after years of autocratic rule by president Alejandro Bolivar. He has stepped down from power and is leaving the country in exile to live in The American Royal States. To the common people of our nation this Bolivar, as opposed to his ancestor, is seen as a monster who has crushed all semblance of freedoms Simon Bolivar fought for. He has been accused of political imprisonment, theocratic rule, and hiking the cost of universities so that students would be forced to join the workforce and not question his rule. This was the final blow that culminated in protests that have lasted for the last week and a half.

While the military offered to 'Cleanse the capital of them' as one source said, Bolivar attempted negotiations with them. They never reached an agreement. Bolivar then simply ignored them, hoping they would go away. This proved disastrous as the protests only grew in the time between the end of negotiation and the fall of Bolivar. In parting, Bolivar offered a final statement.

"I have done what I thought right for the Andean Peoples. Our state was supposed to become stronger and more prosperous under my rule, and it did. The People of Gran Colombia, however, have rejected my sovereignty under the pretense of Democracy and Liberalism. I like my noble ancestor will see the peoples' will and shall step down. I however do fear for our future and our faith. May the Andean People continue to prosper and grow under this new government. God protect them."

A new transitional government has been put into place by the Council of the State of Colombia. They have selected Nicolas Garcia of the 'New Liberal Party' (El Partido Nuevo Liberal) as the interim president and called for new elections to take place in one year. In his small term as president Garcia has promised to 'rid the government of all vestiges of the former autocratic regime'.

Image

President Garcia (above), up to now an unknown bureaucrat, was chosen due to his familiarity with the law and of his liberal inclinations. He was seen as double solution, one for the state, and one to satiate the protestors at the government's door. What the coming months will see is a mystery, but it looks as though Colombia has had a new revolution. Truly, we of the revolution still plow the waves.

Transitional Government Ended as Elections Close

Image

Bogota, Gran Colombia-A new government, one now freely elected, has come to power in Gran Colombia y Peru. Interim President Garcia has stepped down from office and is now living in retirement in his villa at Lima. In the capital, people are filling the streets in celebration rather than anger at the government before them. This election has had its surprises and its obvious results, but we see here today that liberty and democracy have survived the rigors of Fascism.

The not-surprise was the results of the general election. The Liberal Party, which has branded itself the Revolutionary Party, has taken control of the Senate (With 60/100 seats) and the Chamber of Representatives (56% Control). The people have elected a government that will govern in their interests, as the proponents of the party say. However, opponents of the revolution have accused the liberals of everything from vote buying to murder. There has been no evidence of this, yet the rumors are always abound. Polls and analyses have shown that support for the revolution was not universal, with only 64% reporting they strongly felt it was needed. This has been seen numerically as well as geographically. Colombia itself was the strongest supporter of the revolution, followed by Ecuador and Peru. Venezuela has been the holdout of the Fascist party, and still circulates pamphlets calling for the toppling of the government and the restoration of Bolivar.

The big surprise of this election was the victory of Augustino de Llano as president of the republic. Why? Augustino is a the former Count of Toreno and an exile from The Roman Imperial Republic. Fleeing because of his Christian faith, Augustino came to Colombia and was picked up by the government of Bolivar as a show of resistance to the Emperor in Rome. However, Augustino is not Fascist and fought the dictatorship in every way possible during his time as Attorney General. The next surprise is that Augustino is a member of the Partido Radical, the anarcho-liberals. What does this mean for Colombia? The future will tell us.

Emperor Suffers Near-Fatal Stroke, Empress Becomes Regent

Image

Tarsus, Cicilia-We come here urgently at BIRT to announce that Emperor Gallus has suffered a near-fatal stroke. There is a lot of speculation at the moment but there are a few things we can independently verify as truth. Emperor Quintus Aelius Gallus was found unconscious on the floor of his friend's villa in Tarsus this morning. The Emperor was in Cicilia as part of a general tour of the country in order to check upon the military and infrastructure projects. At age 64, the Emperor is still in the prime of his life, and this stroke has been an incredible surprise for the entire empire.

The Emperor is under the care of the Imperial Courtesans, after being transferred from Tarsus to Alhambra (The Imperial Courtesan Base). Using bio-statistic analysis, it has been determined that the stroke occurred around 11:00 PM last night, after the emperor retired from a party given by the Senator of Cicilia. The time past between the emperor's stoke and his discovery has diminished the chance of survival greatly. Even if he were to survive, the damage caused by the internal bleeding may leave him permanently incapable of continuing his rule as emperor. The courtesans have stated they have begun work immediately. The Mother Superior had this to say:

"My Brother-in-Law's case is severe, and our most skilled specialists are working around the clock to keep him stable and alive. We as of yet to do not have the resources to fully cure his condition, but have called upon the Empire's greatest scientists to help with his recovery. Pray to Lord Leto that this will be a success."

While many people are thinking of and praying for the emperor, another issue has immediately taken hold of the country. Will Basileus succeed? He is only seventeen years of age, and Roman Law dictates a minimum succession age of 21. With the heir living, there is no chance for the senate to declare an interregnum. Thus the crown must fall upon the only person eligible to take the Imperial Throne, Empress Natalya. Being the former Tsarina of Russia, Natalya has experience with rule. The senate itself however has not made any inclination of approving her regency, but she herself has ordered a new contingent of guards into the city as well as new furnishings for the protection of the imperial palace. This rising tension will underscore the importance of the emperor's survival. We will continue to report in the coming days.

Emperor Dies, Empress Deposed, Emperor Crowned

Image

Image
The Funeral of Gallus
Rome, Italia- The events of the last few days have been hectic, and dangerous. On Monday morning Emperor Gallus died on the surgery table due blood loss. The Imperial Courtesans had imported the best geneticists and surgeons from around the empire, but they did not make it in time. He slipped silently into death ten minutes into the operation. His funeral was done that morning quietly, as he had requested many years ago. His body was burned in the gardens of Alhambra, just in front of the lion fountain. A crowd of onlookers were allowed to attend, most of them being Imperial Courtesans. Free gladiatorial games are set to be done across the empire in his memory over the next few days. The ashes of the emperor have been interred in the mausoleum of the emperors, and his death mask now graces the Halls of House Aelius in Madrid.

As with the death of any emperor, there will always be instability that follows with it. The senate confirmed the regency of Empress Natalya at noon after the death of Emperor Gallus. She was given her senate seal while still wearing the clothes of mourning. Her confirmation with the senate was met with anger and insubordination, culminating in the empress ordering troops into Rome to encourage the senate to move faster. The senate responded with an angry reprieve, promising to confirm her so long as the military was completely removed from the city. She obeyed, to her own destruction. She was Regent for twelve full hours.

The night of Rome on Tuesday was awoken with screams and shouting. At three in the morning Prince Basileus, being followed by hundreds of guards seized control of the palace and demanded the surrender of his own mother. These soldiers were a portion of the Sacred Band of Sant'Angelo, the new bodyguards the ever mad Pope Innocent XV. Our sources have told us that the prince had paid the insane pope around 4.5 Million in NSD for their use, and another 6.2 Million for unknown reasons. They were armed with primitive pistols, as well as a hoplon and falcata. There was only a minor struggle with palace guards, killing a single person. Empress Natalya surrendered her throne to Basileus, and has not been seen since then. There are rumors that she has fled to the Imperial Courtesan Chapterhouse in Rome, but the ICs have not responded to any questions. The people of Rome were in shock, but not angered, as many believed that Natalya was too much of a foreigner. The senate met and confirmed Basileus as Emperor within minutes of Natalya's deposition. Their loyalty was made apparent in this move. Basileus was crowned in the Temple of Leto, and made his vows to the people of the empire. A surprise to everyone was his halting of the ceremony to add titles to the already existing ones, namely Tsar and Autocrat of all Russia. This harkens back to the agreement made between Gallus and Natalya for their marriage which promised their heir will rule Russia and Rome as a personal union upon their deaths. After Russia collapsed during the great Undead-Plague, this agreement was seen as defunct. His claim to these titles might mean there will be possible colonization of Russia in the near future.

We will continue to update you with events as time goes along.

Romans Not Roman Enough As Emperor's New Reforms Become Law

Image

Rome, Italia-Emperor Basileus has taken the route of his father during the first few weeks of his reign by rolling out a large series of reforms for the people of the Empire. Unlike the emperor's liberal, populist, reforms, these are undoubtedly nationalistic. Thus most of them are ideologically centered, and favored by both parties in the Senate of Rome. The emperor himself is half Russian, but still prefers his Roman heritage more than any other thing in the world. This sweeping tide of self-culture comes at a time when many believe the culture of Rome has been eroded by outside sources, those claiming to be Roman, but are seen as pretenders. The Old Empire of Augustus Caesar has become a torch of guidance for politicians and citizens alike. Emperor Basileus took this new ideal and made it real once again.

The most important of these reforms is not a formal law. The senate has passed a informal resolution that the Mos Maiorum was and still is the guiding force of the culture of Rome, and that every citizens should abide by its cultural regulations. 'The Virtus Romanus (Roman Virtues) are the now the greatest force of guidance for the citizen, after the law itself.' the Consul declared on Roman Television this morning. These virtues are Fides (Fidelity), Peitas (Dutiful Respect), Religio (Faith), Disciplina (Discipline), Gravitas (Determination/condfidence), Dignitas (Self-Worth), and Auctoritas (Prestige). Fides encompasses trust/trustworthiness, good faith/faithfulness, confidence, reliability, and credibility. Pietas is the attitude of dutiful respect towards the god-emperor, homeland, parents and family, which requires the maintenance of relationships in a moral and dutiful manner. Religio is the requirement that people should continue and preserve the Pax Leto, Letoan Peace, within the empire and shun bloodshed of fellow citizens. The military character of Roman society suggests the importance of Disciplina as related to education, training, discipline and self-control. Gravitas is dignified self-control. In the face of adversity, a "good" Roman is to display an unperturbed façade. Roman myth and history reinforces this value by recounting tales of figures such as Gaius Mucius Scaevola, who in a founding legend of the Republic demonstrated his seriousness and determination to the Etruscan king Lars Porsenna by holding his right hand in a fire. Dignitas and auctoritas are the end result of displaying the values of the ideal Roman and the service of the state in the forms of priesthoods, military positions, and magistracies. Dignitas is reputation for worth, honor and esteem. Thus, a Roman who displays their gravitas, constantia, fides, pietas and other values becoming a Roman will possess dignitas among their peers. Similarly, through this path, a Roman could earn auctoritas ("prestige and respect").

However, the position of Paterfamilias has been throughly banned due to its limitation in the rights of women. 'Their moral virtues will forever be equal with men, and will never be trampled by the state.' Emperor Basileus stated to the press. 'However, they will also be expected to follow the Mos Maiorum as much as any male citizen.' The second law was indeed a true law, banning the destructive influence of foreign culture. All male citizens are required to wear a Toga in public, regardless of age or location. Women are required to wear a Stola, unless they are prostitute or seeking public office, then they must wear a toga as well. Non-Office holders must wear the plain white Toga Virilis, Senators must wear the Red-Striped Toga Praetexta, and the Imperial Family must wear the all purple Toga Picta. Foreigners are absolutely banned from wearing the toga, on pain of death. Diplomats must wear a simple tunic. Old Latin is now the official language of the empire, and the currency is now being replaced with the ancient Denarius, Sesterius, and Aureus.

The Emperor himself adopted these measures before they were passed, wearing only toga and speaking Old Latin. As Rome becomes more traditional, it looks as though the crackdown on Christanity is not going to be repealed, to the relief of the Letoan Priesthood. BIRT will cover more reforms as they occur.

Mad Pope Detained in Rome, New Pope Proclaimed

Image

Vatican/Capitoline Hills, Rome, Italia-Pope Innocent XV of the Vatican City state has been detained by the Roman government under charges of murdering a Roman Citizen. In a released dispatch, he has abdicated his position of Pope in favor of his uncle Giacomo Borgia. This unsettling flurry of news came after a long night of revelry and drunkenness on part of Innocent. There has been no indication that the Roman government will be releasing him anytime soon, if at all. Recordings of his arrest show an unkempt man, still in his late 20's, screaming at police demanding they release for they may 'face the wrath of god in the form of his divine son the Pope Innocent.' He is currently being held in chains in the Tullianum underneath the Capitoline Hill and the Senate.

This entire incident happened in the space of three hours. At around three in morning standard time, it was discovered the Pope had vanished from the Vatican Walls. Innocent XV has become the recent joke amongst the people and nobility of the Empire, as his ravings and insanity are continually unleashed within St. Peters. The jokes ended when the monster entered the pomerium of Rome. Our sources told us that Innocent was wandering the streets around the Tiber river, muttering to himself. This continued for two hours until residents of the area called the police. When he was found by a centurion, he was in a trance state and completely drunk. The centurion questioned him, but was only met with a dagger to the heart. The centurion died en route to the medicus. Innocent has been detained since then.

The new Pope is Giacomo Borgia, now named Calixtus IV. After the first news of the arrest hit the airwaves, Giacomo moved to secure the seat of St. Peter against any foreign intervention. A conclave of cardinals inside St. Peters was called, and Giacomo was named Pope. Giacomo is a moderate politically, and has been seen as papabile in every Conclave since his early 20's. He is a staunch supporter of papal infallibility, and declared that all existing laws from the beginning reign of Innocent XV will be held in place. The friendship with Trabadius and Jherusalem will continue. The Sacred Band will remain as Vatican Security as well. More news as it arrives.

Four Great Families United in Papal Marriage Pact

Image

The Vatican, Rome-Today's evening mass ended with a double-ceremony. It was a marriage of four couples and a naming of cardinals soon after. Pope Calixtus IV presided over a ceremony with all the pomp and decorum the Vatican could afford. It was a triumph of love. It was a triumph for the church. Most of all, it was a triumph for politics. In a secret pact sealed by Calixtus himself, the Vatican agreed to the marriages of the last members of several of Italy's and Europe's last great families. The pope's two daughters, Beatrice and Amalia were to wed Gregorio de' Medici and Benedetto Colonna respectively. His only son Juan married the ever beautiful Gerolama Orsini. Each of these people were the last surviving members of their families. The marriages to Gregorio and Benedetto were matrilineal, but the children will carry the name of both lines. For example the children of Gregorio will be called 'Borgia-Medici'.

The wedding ceremony itself was a display of this union. St. Peters was draped with tapestries containing the coat of arms of each family, and the guests wore them as well. So much opulence was in Rome, with jewels galore and food and wine given for free to the poor for the entire day. Papal Guards were decked in ceremonial armor made of solid gold and enameled with ornate designs illustrating great moments from the history of each family. The evening entertainment has been covered up in secrecy yet there have been many rumors leaking out as the days pass by. What we is that there was a three and half hour performance of Boccacio's Decameron. The magnificent work and all its bawdy jokes and lustful stories does nothing to ameliorate the tales of orgies and prostitutes coming from the commoners of Rome.

Three days after the wedding, the grooms were named cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church. Each family has been given areas of the bureaucracy that suits their supposed 'historical talents'. The Medici have been given the Vatican Bank, The Colonna have much of the papal armed forces, and the Orsini are beginning to fill other military positions as some clerical areas of influence. Each may have their influence in a select area, but all fall under the umbrella of the Borgia, as all should be.

Pax Gallica Ends As Basileus Renews Rome's Interventionist Policy

Image

Rome, Italia Province- In an address to the nation following the Ludi Apollionares, Emperor Basileus has decreed that the Pax Gallica is at an end, and that Rome shall be returning to her interventionist policy that at one time characterized the republic for centuries. Following his announcement and before his departure for the Borgia Wedding, The legions showed, in parade, the brand new equipment ordered by the Emperor himself. New ships filled the harbor of Ostia and new multirole drones (above) flew in formation above the city itself. All of this was done without the Senate's approval, and this has made many senators uncomfortable, even though the constitution grants the emperor unequivocal power and authority over the legions, the navy, and the air force. Although they have no power to change the emperor's mind, the senate has passed a resolution of condemnation for ending a long era of peace that could draw Rome into war with other nations once again.

Not only has Rome gained new military technology and logistics, but older, dangerous ones have been reawakened. An anonymous source from within the upper legionary command has leaked a classified document that states that Emperor Basileus has authorized the recommissioning of all former Anti-Matter Silos across the empire. New Missiles to fill them have apparently been produced over the past two years and the current stockpile is over 100 missiles. At over 50 times the strength of the largest nuclear device ever detonated, a single missile can be capable of wiping out a nation. When contacted the Emperor refused to comment on this issue. The release of this documents prompted many protests across the empire that were quickly wrapped up by the legions. 100 were killed and three hundred injured.

Many have questioned the reasons behind this new found militarism, with accusations and hypotheses flying across the debating table. Some have blamed the rising influence of the Vatican, while others blamed the emperor's romanization efforts, as well as others just blaming the emperor. The emperor himself said at the end of his presentation:

"Rome will never survive without her legions. They are the blood of our civilization, and like blood we will die without them. Yes we have been at peace for more than fifty years, but the world has not waited for us. Each day we hear news of terrorism and tyranny. There were days when we Romans, we of the Republic, battled tyrants for the freedom of the people! There were days when we Romans, we of the Empire, battled evil people for the Glory in Victory! Thus I tell the world that Rome is not dead, and that our sword arm yearns to be used once again! The die is cast."

Rome Celebrates Largest Games in History to Mark Bimillenium of Augustus Caesar

Image

Rome, Italia-Banners, bugles, and flowers covered the city of Rome today as the empire remembers and celebrates the life of Gaius Octavius Julius Caesar Augustus, otherwise known as Augustus Caesar. Dying at age 76, Augustus had created the old empire out of the carcass of the Republic. His forty one year reign was a time of peace, prosperity, and power for the nation as a whole. Augustus sought to create a Roman people that were virtuous and plentiful so that he can cleanse the hallowed city of the filth that he had grown up with. His indelible impact on Europe and the world as a whole was so distinguished that Emperor and Senate together agreed to hold a festival in his honor. The games and their spectators are now the largest the in history of the empire, but are they in virtue that Augustus himself sought to establish? It may or may not be so.

The Emperor has ordered every governor in the provinces to provide the people with free games and food, all criminals arrested in the last two weeks were given official pardon, a check of 2000 denarii was given to all citizen families below the poverty line (a whopping total of 45 trillion denarii in total), soldiers were given a double months pay, and the government itself has closed down to attend the festivities. The games in Rome itself began a week ago, and the blood is still flowing. There has been bear constant racing in the Circus Maximius, but the Colosseum and the other amphitheaters of Italy are the places that have been packed to the brim. Some normal theaters have been improvised for the gladiatorial matches as well. Basileus' Games are to surpass Trajan I's games in the amount of death and spectacle. Two military forays into Germany and Russia have brought 100,000 German men, 100,000 Russian men, 245,000 Crimean Tatars, and 13,000 Nubian protestors. So far, the games have taken the lives of around 12,000. The death toll on beasts is even higher, with around 150,000 animals dying in the first three days of a festival expected to last three months.

But would Augustus like to be remembered like this? Maybe at the beginning, yes, but right now he would detest it. Augustus loved to attend the games, but he was a man of virtue. The debauchery stemming from the games: public drunkenness, assault, theft, as well as sex and orgies on the streets and in the Forum! Augustus passed many laws against this sort of celebration. He regulated the behavior of women as well as men. The games were made a divergence and reward for hard work. It had to be earned. We may celebrate Augustus in Rome, but we are not like him. Not anymore. We will report more on the games when they finish.

Weekly Roundup #1: Firing, Ludi Augusti, Consular Election, ISIL/IS

Image Image

Londinium, Britannia- Protestors marched outside BIRT headquarters on Thursday after lead reporter Vibia Julia Graccha was fired after her article about the Augustan Games was considered critical of the government by her editors. They are demanding her return to our news media, and have camped outside for the last day. No comment has been received from either the editors or the government.

Roma, Italia-The Augustan Games have continued into their third day, and the blood has not stopped flowing. Popular matches have been between the Germans and the Tatars, although the highest bets went into the Tatar vs. Russian matches. The death tolls have reached historic limits, with 25,000 gladiators dead so far. A naval battle was staged in the Colosseum on Wednesday reenacting the Battle of Actium in grisly detail. The Circus Maximus will be showing races at a lowered price on Saturday. It has been announced that prisoners from the east will be given to the animals starting on Monday. For more info on this, see below.

Roma, Italia-This years elections have concluded, with the optimates taking a slim majority in the senate. With only fifty-one of a hundred seats, negotiations have begun to form a coalition and keep the government in working order. The victor of the consular elections was a huge surprise with Titus Pisius Bibulus (above left) taking a landslide of votes to become the first Plebeian Consul in centuries. The Tribune of the Plebs is his cousin, Gaius Pisius Flavus (above right). More info will be provided in a forthcoming article.

Seleuciea, Mesopotamia-Members of the foreign organization known as the Islamic State or ISIL are being rounded up by Roman forces in the eastern provinces. Under automatic charges of Treason, when captured they are crucified on a local hill. This crackdown comes after an attack was made on the Pontifex Maximus for by members of the Islamic State last week. Thus far three hundred members have been crucified in Mesopotamia and Nabatea. Another two hundred have been sent to Rome to be fed to various animals as part of the festivities for the Augustan Games.

Weekly Roundup II: ISIS Auction, Naval Battle, Suicide, Near war in Germania

Image

Alexandria, Aegyptus- The Augustan Games concluded on Wednesday with their largest and most elaborate battle taking place in Egypt. Two fleets of constructed Triremes went to fight with each other over a six hour period. With over half on each side sunk, the 'Roman' fleet was declared the victor. The games have taken more lives than any other in the history of the Empire or Republic, with over a million dead gladiators and 3 million animals vanquished in the arenas across three continents.

Londinium, Britannia- Vibia Julia Graccha committed suicide via sword on Thursday after a warrant for her arrest and execution on the charge of treason was drafted by governor Davidius Aemilius Regillus of Britannia. The charges were laid down to curb the growing protests in London for her reinstatement as a reporter for BIRT and to appease the senate, who had requested that something must be done to set an example to the plebeians. The treason charge has brought in cries of astonishment from other provincial governors, and a reprimanding from the Emperor who is 'appalled that such an extreme action taken to end a crisis that could have been concluded with words, but has now been exacerbated by blood.' Now even more protestors have gathered outside the BIRT Headquarters for a candlelight vigil, and even more have set up camp outside the governor's palace demanding his resignation.

Rome, Italia- Women and children belonging to the families of ISIS members executed last week have been sold into indentured servitude. Fifteen members of ISIS or the Islamic State were captured by Roman Authorities in the past week, including a sympathizing Imam, and were crucified on the Aventine Hill in Rome. Their family members, around twenty women (ages 14-50) and sixty children (ages 2-18, male and female) were imprisoned and sold as part of the criminal auctions program, by which criminals are given the lesser punishment of slavery as opposed to death. The program has been modified by Emperor Basileus in order to not punish the families but rehabilitate them. Through the process of living in Roman villas and government buildings, these children will become Romanized and lose their fundamentalist tendencies. The women, however, were sold to the prostitites guild and scattered across the empire.

Noreia, Noricum- Artillery fired was exchanged with the Boii tribes in Germania yesterday bringing Rome closer to war with them. Over the years, tensions between Rome and the Germanic Tribes have risen steadily as the wars between the tribes have eased and Roman attempts to start them have been discovered. The events of this week also entail another inept governor, Gaius Otacilius Crassus. Otacilius had been contacted by refugees from the Rugii, a tribe in northern Germania that broke away from the warlike Suebi some three years ago. These people had fled their lands with the treasury of the Chief after they had stolen it from him for murdering members of their branch of the tribe. Otacilius' message from them was a request for asylum. Otacilius agreed with them, but being the avaricious man he is, he ordered the legions to search all of the tribe's belongings before they were given entrance to the empire. Upon discovering the money, Otacilius seized it and closed the border to the Rugii. The Rugii did not take this well and began to open fire with small arms on the military base where they were kept. Otacilius ordered the artillery to 'end these barbarian's petty whining' and killed them. The Boii tribe who actually owned the land, detected the artillery fire and fired back killing nine legionaries in the process. Tense negotiations from the capital ended the escalation and Otacilius has been arrested fro embezzlement and illegal warfare. The money has been seized as evidence. No word has come yet from the Chieftain of either the Rugii or the Boii regarding the money.
