Most are armed, not all officially issue weapons to employees but they generally allowed to carry weapons on the jobsite within reason and as long as it is for self-defense (individuals who are known to be unstable are prohibited from bringing weapons).

All law enforcement agencies in Radictistan are armed from the Royal Security Police down to municipal departments. Firefighters, EMS personnel, and other first responders often carry sidearms if they are working in a particularly dangerous area.

There are no routinely armed public services in Makaar outside of the military.

The National Police Service, the only police service in Makaar, maintains a force of armed officers known as the Armed Response Division. These officers are specially trained and licensed to carry firearms while on duty; at any one time, there are approximately 2 armed officers for every 100 unarmed officers on duty. Because of their scarcity, they are constantly on patrol and do not pick up paperwork in the same way as other officers; they do not investigate crimes and are only deployed to incidents which require their specialist knowledge, training, and equipment. Investigation of crimes which they deal with is passed to other officers.

In order to enter the ARD, an officer must have demonstrated at least two years of good service with no substantiated complaints on their record. They must pass rigorous eyesight and fitness tests and pass an exam which tests their knowledge of firearms law and procedure. They must then demonstrate aptitude at handling a range of firearms. Since the department's size is limited, the unit operates a one-in, one-out policy; vacancies are advertised within the police service as needed, and are always oversubscribed due to the nature of the work.

While on duty, firearms officers carry the same baton, handcuffs, and incapacitant spray as their unarmed colleagues. However, they are also equipped with a stun gun and a pistol (usually a Glock) which they carry on their person. Their vehicles are specially outfitted with large gun cabinets, and can carry a range of sub-machine guns and assault rifles. Usually each officer will have an MP-5 submachine gun and a PH-1C Phalanx assault rifle, a carbine version of the rifle used by the Makaarian armed forces, stowed in their vehicle. Officers carry hollowpoint rounds to minimise target penetration and maximise stopping power; in their cars, they carry a supply of full metal jacket rounds for use against armoured targets.

Within the ARD, there are a number of specialist sub-departments whose role is to perform specialised firearms operations, such as VIP protection or hostage rescue. Assignment to such a department requires at least two years of exemplary service as a firearms officer.

Other agencies with law enforcement powers, such as the Border Services Agency or the Benefits Fraud Investigation Agency, do not have any armed response capacity; should they require armed support, they will call the National Police Service.
