In the interest of velocity (and perhaps bullet commonality between pistol and rifle), how light could I make a 7.62mm bullet?

Make it a 7mm bullet. You'll get 20% more efficiency and a flatter trajectory for the same recoil level.

Attempting to keep über common/cheap 7.62x39mm for MMW.
Perhaps 10mm Auto necked down to 7.62mm...

Edit: Oh snap, gunporn!

It's about as outdated as the AKM. Which is to say, it's old, but still pretty good at what it does.

No, not really. The launcher does what it needs to do and it does it well. Many of the modern warheads are suited to their intended targets.

Ok,here is my revised equipment setup.

Militia, auxiliary: Mosin Nagant

Main infantry: AK 74 (preferably without a stock, cuz I'm cool like that ;-)

Support roles: RPK 74 and the SVD.

Maybe I'll change the RPK to the RPD. Convince me. :p

Just use the AKS-74 (Or the AK-74M as Spree said). That way, the morons in your Army can fold the stock and fire form the hip, whereas the pros can use the stock as intended.

The RPD sucks (I guess: actually works well enough from what I've seen, but go with me here) in comparison to the RPK. That's why it replaced the RPD.

Instead, try this:

RESERVE FORCES: Mosin M91/30, AKM(N), SKS.
MAIN INFANTRY: AK-74M, AK-103
SUPPORT INFANTRY: SVD, PKP

there is zero reason for reserves to not have the same weapon as line infantry. If they can afford 74/103's for the line troops, they should be able to get them for reserves since it would be pretty silly to not have enough extras around

iirc RPD was replaced because the RPK offered more commonality with the AK. Also because RPD sucks.

lrn2 no post soviet nation outside Ukraine(because lol90s Ukraine..) had mixed line infantry weapons. Even if you look at the --stans and Georgia, unless they were in the transition phase, in which case they had more of one then the other, it would simply cost less to just pick one and phase out the others over time. Keeping them in storage is a different story.

And in that case, there wouldn't be any reason to add another kind of bullet. It wouldn't cost much at all to drop the SKS and 91/30 to keep them with AKMs while those get phased out for 103s

I would only bring out the auxiliary troops if the nation was in direct danger of being defeated, I counted reserves as part of the main infantry. So, yes my reserves have the same weapons as my main infantry, my auxiliaries only have minimal training and militias have even less. I count reserves as main infantry because they are combat ready.
