By the reckoning of the old Earthian calendar, the year in our universe is now 2112.

That said, the doomsday prophecy was surprisingly correct. It just got the year wrong - it was off by 4 years. We invaded Earth in 2008, and within days, life as the humans had known it was over forever. Humans weren't all obliterated after Earth's unconditional surrender - but they were enslaved and forced to work in underground mines. A few "lucky" ones were allowed to stay on the surface and work in the oil fields instead. To this day, they, as a conquered species, are slaves.

Within 10 years of the Invasion, we had rolled out the first version of the Approved DNA Codec for the Human Species, which brought the creatures up to Version 2.0. This Codec produced humans that were smarter and stronger than the old ones, and most importantly, far more loyal. When this version went into production, it was the end of the human species as it was once known. Almost all humans have been grown in our Cloning Centers from then on, and they are intentionally engineered to be sterile. This allows us to have full control over their numbers, their DNA - and the continued existence of the Homo s. line of creatures itself.

The only humans who still have the original DNA code (other than the mandatory disease immunity patch) are in a small enclave dedicated to Mafia members. That group successfully negotiated for its freedom by paying hefty bribes, which are still paid on an annual basis to this day.

Now that over 100 years have passed, all of the original generation of humans have died off. With only the Mafia enclave and a few wild humans still bearing most of the original code, it can be said that the species - as it once was - is functionally extinct. Human 4.0 is related, but in much the same way as Homo Sapiens was related to Homo neanderthalis. We still call them humans, but the genetics are actually quite different.

Thanks to these events, the Bureau of Paranormal Research has deemed the old 2012 theory to be "mostly accurate" despite its missing the date of the beginning of the end by a few years. It was amazingly accurate considering the technology the Mayans had.
